Trouble connecting older Gateway desktop to home network

Hi all-
I am trying to connect an older Gateway 5200s desktop (that we have used for internet previously) to my current home network, but I'm not getting any internet connectivity.
Home router is Actiontec M1424 wr rev E.
the old Gateway uses Windows XP Prof v 2002 SP3
The wireless network adapter is 1394 Net Adapter and also the Intel R pro/100 VE network connection
(the Intel adapter says a "network cable is unplugged" and I never knew what that meant- connections have worked in the past)
My current home system is a Dell desktop running Windows Vista home
The old Gateway is up and running, but I just cant seem to figure out what the internet connection problem is.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Did you connect wirelessly before with this machine?  Whose wireless adapter is the 1394 network adapter? - typically that means a firewire adapter that is not wireless.

  • Hi, My daughters just got an ipod touch today and I'm having trouble connecting it to my Wi-Fi network!??

    Hi,
My daughters just got an ipod touch today and I'm having trouble connecting it to my Wi-Fi network.  It identifies my wireless connection but then says 'unable to join the network' with the word 'Dismiss' underneath.  Any ideas on what I can do? Thanks!!

    Hi
Thanks for your reply.  I've tried resetting a few times. There is no 'tick' next to the name of my wireless connection so it won't connect at all.  I think I may have to do something with my router as there is an arrow button to press next to my wireless name, this takes me to a screen which asks for IP address, then has options for DHCP   BootP and Static, it asks for Client ID DNS etc - all gobbledegook to me!!   Perhaps my router is blocking the Ipod?
    Thanks anyway!

  • 2005 Mac Mini, can this connect this wirelessly to my home network as an iTunes server

I have acquired a 2005 Mac Mini which appears to need direct cable connection to my router to access the internet.  Is there a way around this that  I can modify to access my home network wirelessly so I can use this as a stable location for my itunes library rather than my macbook pro.  The Mac mini is located in a room upstairs but my router is situated in the lounge alongside my Apple TV.  I want to try and get the mac mini to be the storage location for itunes that my apple tv will use.
Would the addition of an airport express or the like be a solution or am I barking up the wrong tree.  Due to the age, is it likely that the mac mini can be used as a mini desktop only rather than as a file server?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as you have probably gathered, I am an apple novice

    Per this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Mini
an internal wifi card was optional.
You need a USN wifi stict that is compatible with your Mac. This one shuld work
    http://www.meritline.com/usb-wifi-wireless-lan-internet-adapter-card---p-79469.a spx?source=fghdac&gclid=CKPZ_tmalLcCFUFV4Aod_h4AZg
    It says:
Supports Windows , ME, 2000, XP, vista , windows 7,MAC OS 10.X, Linux
Just mak sure that what yo get works with OSX 10.4.11 or 10.5.8. Your G4 Mini can only go to 10.5.8

  • No connectivity with wireless notebook but has connectivity with wired desktops in the network

Hello! My name is Annie.  I have a BEFW11s4 LinkSys Wireless Access Point / Cable Router with 4-Port Switch version2.1. My three desktops are hard wired into the router and have no problem with connectivity to each of three computers in my home network and to the internet.
My problem is that my wireless notebook does not see the router. There is no connectivity or does not see wireless network in range.  The notebook is about two feet away in distance from router and wireless switch of my notebook is on. The WLAN Link is Green and the Link LED illuminates, which means that the wireless option is enabled.
Please help! I travel with notebook often for work and need to connect to the home network and internet once I am home.   The notebook has no problem with a different wireless router when at work( 2WIRE).  It's when I get home that I encounter the problem when I am using the wireless linksys described above.  I also change the preference in my notebook to make sure the home linksys router is the first in the list of wireless router.  I only have two in thelist (2WIRE and linksys)
    Thanks,
    Annie

annie no need to do the reset since 3desktops are working already...you can see linksys maybe thats your own network since you never mention about any wireless settings with your wireless access point, right?
so to make sure that you have the right settings check your access point screen or the configuration page to check or to futher configure the wireless the settings...try to name your own network so would identify our own network...

  • Parallels Desktop and Home Networking

I don't know if anyone has encountered a similar problem that I'm describing below.
Context: We have two MBP's at home running 10.4.9 connected over a wireless network. Both computers for some time saw each other easily over the network when appletalk was enabled and also shared files easily. All one had to do was to click the network folder in the finder window, and the other computer would show up automatically.
Recently, I installed Parallels Desktop Build 3188... and well, now neither computer could see or share files with one another. From checking all my network settings, nothing about the airport connect had changed, and appletalk was still enabled on both computers.
I could remove parallels, but obviously I installed the software because I needed to make use of some PC software.
Oh, and I have checked the Parallels website. Neither their support, documentation, or FAQ were of any help whatsoever.
Has anyone experienced this problem with their home network and Parallels?

I want to thank Joe and Tristan for replying. Just a follow up to both your comments.
First, I have my parallels VM set to bridged, rather than shared networking. As to which type is actually more secure for Win XP running within the virtual machine, well, I'm not quite sure and that's surely a topic for further discussion.
I have to report on the status of my network - well, I started seeing the other mac in my network folder again... but sporadically. I was doing what Tristan had suggested, unchecking the Parallels Host-Guest and Parallels NAT configurations. I suspect the following:
When my computer is first booted, having both the Parallels Host-Guest and NAT checked prevented me from seeing the other computer. Uncheck them, and all of a sudden the other computer appears on the list. However, at this point, I can re-check the boxes of the Host-Guest and NAT, and am still able to access the other computer. It's almost like the computer doesn't see it at first, but then when you take down the Parallels wall and put it up again later, the computer remembers that the other one was there. This is completely speculative, and needs a few more rounds of testing to be sure.
However, for now at least, I can get my network connections back.

  • Trouble setting up new router and home network

I used to have a home network. I managed to mess this up real bad, but it was working. Put in 16 port D-Link router. Main computer connects to internet and I can see all the computers. One Mac mini can access internet over the ethernet connection. MacBook Pro can access internet over Airport extreme but when connected over ethernet it won't connect. IMac and an older Mac Pro (G5) both running OS 10.4 won't connect by either airport or wired. Computers are all set to receive "using DHCP" Also on network is a Laserjet HP 4101 which no longer will print. What am I doing wrong here?

Problem partially solved by doing the following.
Modem to ABS. ABS has three ports, two of which connect to computers. Third port goes to a hub with 4 additional hubs. I can't seem to get anything to work through D link 16 port switch. Seems like I have a nice new D link paperweight since I can't get it to work. I am not sure why. Unfortunately with the 4 port hub I have no more room to grow the network and that is why I hope the D link would work.
One last problem one MacBook won't connect to airport. Other computers seem to connect to airport just fine. FYI to get everything to connect up and work required a full reset of the hardware and computers. Basically shut down computers, ABS, routers modem, hubs, including removing batteries for up to 30 minutes and reconnecting and turning them on. These things seem to have a memory and keep looking for connections that used to be there but are no longer. This full reset perhaps could have fixed things a while ago and I could have some of my money still in my wallet. Comments?

  • Cannot Connect to other computers on home network

First let me say I am a new MAC owner. I have only ever used Windows PCs. I just got my Macbook today and installed SL 10.6.2. I can connect successfully to the internet and the networked printer on my home network. I cannot however, see or connect to any other computers on the home network. We have 2 other machines, one is running Vista and the other is XP. They can see and connect successfully to my Mac. I have read through a number of threads, but have not seen anything that I understand or can find on my laptop. Can someone please let me know what I need to do to see and access the windows computers.

Try using Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://ipaddress. If you can connect this way, then good. I'll have more to say later. Just try to get this working for now.
    Before trying to connect:
    On the XP machine.
    1. Right-click on a folder to share (e.g., My Documents), chose Sharing, and select both Sharing Options.
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes. I can't remember where some things are in XP, but you may have to enable Network Discovery somewhere.
    On the Vista machine.
    1. Go > Computer > Users > User; right click on the User folder, and choose the settings that give Everyone—both Read/Write permissions.
    2. Go Control Panel > Network and Sharing Options > Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, Turn off public folder sharing , and Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t occur without turning it on).
    2. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
See how this part goes too. I can't remember some of the detail in Vista.
    On the Sno machine,
    1. Go System Preferences > Sharing > Check File sharing > Go Options > Enable SMB sharing.
    2. Go System Preferences > Network > Select Airport or Ethernet depending on what you are going to be using. I am assuming you will be using wireless below. Let me know if not true.
    3. Having selected Airport, select ask to join new networks and show Airport status in menu bar.
    4. Click advanced > click remember networks this computer has joined > Click Wins > Enter the ip address of your Win7 machine in the WINS server box > Enter the Win7's workgroup name in the workbook box unless it already is there (look in the drop down menu too). In all likelihood the name is workgroup, but check on the Win7 machine.
    5. Restart

  • Trouble connecting to my Airport (Timecapsule) wireless network from PC

I have a wireless airport network running from a Time Capsule. I know the name and the network password and have no trouble connecting to the network from my 3 Mac computers. However, I recently tried to connect a Toshiba notebook running Windows XP and can't seem to get it to connect to the network. It does see the network and prompts for a WEP password. I enter the password but after about 10 seconds the connection attempt fails. Please help if you have any idea, I am sure this is a simple fix, but I need to access a website that is only available with Explorer 7. Thank you in advance for your help.

The Time Capsule only supports WPA2 Personal and WPA2 Enterprise security not WEP. So I assume that's the issue here.
A quick search suggests that WPA2 is not standard in XP (at least XP SP2) but can be added see [here|http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/bowman_wirelesss ecurity.mspx].
But also see [here|http://tech.ifelix.net/1011.html], [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1622794&tstart=0], and [here|http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/2002.html] which you can work around this with the correct settings on the Windows side.

I suggest you go to the Linksys website and do two things - download and carefully read the manual for the router and download and install the latest firmware update for the router.
The touch is only going to connect via WiFi so I suggest you concentrate your efforts there. Suggested settings are DHCP on, SSID on, Encryption on and set to WPA2-psk, MAC address filtering off. Channels, which are just like a TV channel, have nothing to do with speed. You should set the router to select the channel automatically.
Do you really use VPN? The settings for the router look fine but check the manual. You can use VPN with the touch but you have to set it up (tap Settings > General > VPN). However, you do have to have a wireless connection to the internet to be able to log onto VPN servers...
Write back if you are still stuck.

  • My iphone 4S is not able to connect to my home wifi network although it easily connects to others. Infact, i have tried connecting another iphone with my home network without any difficulty. So its just my new iphone 4S that is not connecting.

My iphone 4S is not able to connect to my home wifi network (BSNL). It does detect it and even tries to connect to it but in vain. However, it connects to all other available networks easily. Another interesting thing is that all other devices including an iphone 4 easily connects to this home network. So what is the problem with iphone 4S???

There are two ends to a wireless network. Try rebooting your router. Just pull the power for a few seconds and replug. No settings are lost.
(The fact that all your other devices connect to the internet is irrelevant)

  • Connect to a Windows 7 Home Network ?

Building a Network in Windows 7 is just a matter of some clicks and it works with my several Windows machines.. But how can I connect my Arch PC to this Network? I found that I should be trying Samba for this, but it looks very complicated and obviously involves changing registry entries on windows and stuff.
    Is there no easy way?

Don't know about your Windows, but simply install Samba, fire up the daemon, open the FM of your choice and browse the network. If one is there, you will find it.

  • IPhone 4 not able to connect to the internet via home network

WiFi is on. the home network appears under WiFi with a check mark, but when I go to Safari or go to download email, it's still using the 3G network. What's up? I've already reset the network settings. My kids iTouches are doing the same thing. Their error message is Cannot Open Page.

I have the same problem. all started when upgraded my iphone 4 to iOS 4.3...
hopefully, this fix this on the 4.3.1 and SOON!

  • I suddenly can't connect to printer on wireless home network.

I have an Officjet Pro L7680 and we just had a new cable company installation in our house. We have 1 desktop and 2 laptops. All three share this printer and we had no problems. Since the install, 1 laptop won't connect to the printer. The cable co. tech support was not able or willing to help, saying it's not their fault. I get a message that the printer is offline, when the other computers have no problem printing.
    This question was solved.

On the problem computer, go to Control Panel > Printers and delete all instances of the printer.
Next, print a Wireless Network Test from the front of the printer (Network menu).  Note the printer's IP address.
    1. Make sure the printer is turned on and connected to your network. Verify that you can access the printer's internal web page by browsing to its IP address before continuing.
    2. Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Printers.

    7. Select Hewlett-Packard from the list of manufacturers and select and select your printer model. Click Next.
If your printer model was not listed, then select Have Disk, browse the HP CD that came with your printer and select the first file that starts with hp and ends with inf. Click Open then OK. Select your printer model. Click Next.
    8. If you are asked, use the currently installed driver.
    9. It will ask for the Printer name -- enter a new name or use the existing one. This will be the name of the printer that you select from other applications.

Turn off your router for about 15 seconds to reboot it. If this does not resolve the problem update the router firmware to the latest version.

  • I'm having troubles connecting to my wifi at home. I have the 4th Gen. iPod touch. My screen is cracked, does this have anything to do with it? I recently had a trip down to LA, and before my trip the wifi was working fine. Is there anyway to fix this?

the wifi works perfectly fine on all my other electronics, and I've already tried reseting and moving the router. The wifi signal is only strong if I am within 5 feet of the router.

    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router.
    - Reset networks settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
