Trouble connecting to home router

I am new to Macs. I have got a new home broadband router, 2WIRE201, and I can't get my Mac to connect to it wirelessly. My Windows XP VAIO and my wife's desktop both connect to it easily. Can anyone help please? Ta.

Hi
I had the same problems setting mine up.
I presume you have bluetooth and wireless on your mac?
If so go to Network Preferences and set up a new network (I called mine 2wire)
Ensure your 2wire is switched on and that the broadband signal(green light) is showing.
Your mac will (or should) ask you for a password for the network.
This is the serial number of your 2wire. Hey presto Mac should communicate with 2wire and vice-versa.
Hope this cures it for you.
You will love ur mac - no viruses, never crashes and looks so drop dead gorgeous it's untrue!!
Happy macdays!!

  • Trouble connecting to home router over wifi

Just yesterday I started having problems connecting to the wifi signal in my home. I am able to connect just fine to any other wifi signal. The problem is that I'm able to connect, but cannot transmit data for more than a few minutes at a time, it just stops working. Last night I was able to get it working for about 2 hours then when I woke up this morning it was back to not working. All the other computers in the house are having no problems at all, mine is the only mac in the house. We have a linksys wrt54gs router. I'm not sure whats going on. I've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC settings to no avail. I've also noticed that when connected to my home network, another category shows up in the drop down when you click on the wifi in the menu bar. It says Devices, and it's got my network there with a check mark. I have never noticed this before, and cannot find any information about it anywhere.

There are lots of people with WiFi routers and other devices using the same bandwidths these days. It's possible that a neighbor just bought one and it is configured to use the same channel yours is on.
You might try downloading AirRadar (free trial from Koingo software --> http://www.koingosw.com) and see how many networks are in your area and what channels they are using. It also displays signal strength and 'noise' levels and a history graph.
My MacBook regularly dropped the connection to my old inexpensive 'b/g' router, regardless of which wireless channel I selected (it was all manual configuration). My new 'draft-n' router has the built-in 'quality of service' diagnostics, and can switch channels and adjust signal strength as needed.
It's 'normal' for the wireless network you're attached to to be displayed with a checkmark on the Airport dropdown menu.
If you press Option and click on the Airport icon, you'll get a bit more information about your wireless connection, including what channel you're currently using and the speed of the connection.

Go into your router's page and disable password protection and try connecting again.

  • Trouble Connecting To My Router.

Sorry people of Mac. This is actually a question regarding my Windows desktop but I'm asking here since everyone here is so speedy and smart
I installed a new Netgear wireless PCI adaptor onto my desktop (the previous one broke). My older adaptor (Belkin wireless USB) worked great but when I installed the new one and the CD (driver), it connects to any other open network around the house except for my home router (which has WEP). I'm pretty sure it's not the router's fault because my other 2 Windows computer (they both use Netgear card) seems to connect fine.
Specifically, the Netgear adaptor recognizes my home signal and after putting in the password, it tries to connect. After about a minute, there's a message that the internet cannot be connected. I remember doing some adjustments when I installed my first one like 2 years ago so I don't remember what exactly I did. But do I need to disable or enable anything? Any suggestions?
Once again, my apologies for this rude Windows question.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
    Additional things to try.
Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
On your iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings and see if that enables you to connect.
If none of the above suggestions work, look at this link.

  • !TRIED EVERYTHING! PLEASE HELP! Lenovo thinkpad twist super slow WIFI connect to home router

I love my twist i just wish my wifi would work at home!
It connects and works fine at public places
At home it takes forever to connect maybe have to try 5 times taking 5-7minutes and it will disconnect sometimes if computer goes black
I have : lenovo thinkpad twist s230u with windows 8
    I have a : Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter
    I have a : Broadcom driver 6.30.59.26
Troubleshooting that i have already tried: adjusting wifi power settings, downloading lenovo driver
    PLEASE HELP

I would try plugging the laptop directly into your cable modem, thus by-passing the router, and check your connection speed.  Next, connect the router to the cable modem and plug the laptop directly into the router by cable. Compare your connection speeds.  If both work fine by cable, then I think your wifi on the home router isn't broadcasting/working.  You say the wifi connects at work/public, which leads me to believe it is not your laptop wifi card.  What is your wifi signal strength from your home network? work? public?

  • NOKIA 5530 Xpress Music, Wont Connect To Home Rout...

    I have recently brought a Nokia 5530..
I have a Netgear MIMO WPN824 router with WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] security, with password over 20 char..
I have a laptop, Xbox, Iphone and other items connected to the router without a problem.
When I first got the phone I put in the password and it connected, I browsed a few web pages without a problem for a few mins.. I then tried to download something and the connection went, now cant connect at all??? It just says connecting and does nothing else.
I have deleted and then tried to add the access point back on the phone but this hasn't helped?
I'm pretty computer minded so if its a detailed fix on the phone please let me know and I should be able to attempt it?
    All replies welcome..
    Thanks,
    Mark

Same here, looks like this phone cant handle WPA2 keys larger than 40 chars... I had an 63 chars key and have to low it down till 40 characters to get proper working WiFi in this mobile. Sigh...

  • Trouble Connecting to Home Wifi

I just bought a Belkin N+ wireless router. I am able to connect to the wifi on my laptops, but I am not able to connect on my ipod touch for some reason. I have the security settings on WPA2 and i'm required to use a security key to connect to the router. I've tried the security phrase on my ipod touch with no luck. I then went to "other" on network connections on the itouch and setup that the network is WPA2 and I still couldn't get on.
When i take the security settings off of the router (ie: no password required to get access) i am able to get on with my itouch.
Does anyone know if there are issues with this type of router with the itouch or with using the WPA2 security? I can't figure this out.

I use the same router and have had no issues. Typing problem with your password maybe>

  • Trouble connecting to home wireless router

I'm using a Belkin wireless router with security mode of WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK).
My iPod touch 2G used to be able to connect to the wireless network, but it can't now. It gives me incorrect password message. Only thing I've done is update the software to 3.0.

thank you SOOO much!!! I had been struggling for a couple of hours and this solved it all in under five minutes. it seems to be when you change from WEP (my old router) to WPA2 (new router) and not just 3.0. I have a Touch with 2.0 and it was the same story. thanks again!

  • Frequent dropped connection on home router

I have been having this problem for a few weeks now. When I am at home my router drops the wireless connection to my MBP intermittently. Sometimes it is frequent and other times there are several minutes/hours between issues. Occasionally, I even have to reselect my router from the list of wireless networks on the airport menu bar.
I went into the system logs and found this information that may or may not be helpful, but seems related at least.

Just adding my two cents since the thread you reference is sooo long now. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this.
I was at a hotel this week when I noticed the Airport going four bars, no bars, four bars, no bars. My iPod Touch had no problems at all. I gave up and went to bed (putting my MBP to sleep). In the morning it worked fine.
Now back home; I use a static IP (no DHCP) at home, and started seeing the same thing again. Here's what I see in /var/log/system.log (same thing I saw while on the road):

  • IPad connection to home router - Netopia

I just got an iPad and cannot connect to the internet. I am able to connect to the network and show a full signal, however, when I go to Safari I receive a cannot open page because not connected to the internet error message. Have tried ISP and Apple and still no resolution. Am thinking I need to change a setting on my router...any suggestions?

I have done everything you mentioned. The only way I can get the iPad to connect through my home network is to set the privacy setting to off which is a little scary.
Perhaps a bit more detail on what equipment you have (e.g., router make & model, age - if Netopia it may be rather old) and how it is configured (e.g., security type WEP or WPA or WPA2, etc.) would help us in determining a solution to your problem.

  • Troubled Connection with WRT150N Router

I  have purchased a WRT150N Linksys wireless router. I am able to connect to it most of the time, however, it loses connection MANY times. The connection seems unstable, because it can never stay connected for an extended period of time. Is there any way to stabalize the connection?

I have the exact same problem. It loses connection after about an hour. It's doing this right out of the box.
Also, I have logs enabled but they do not seem to work. They are all blank with the exception of the DHCP Client log, which reads:

  • Trouble connection Laptop with Router

Linkysys Cisco Wireless-N WRT160N, My connection is fine, My sons laptop will not show my router in his connections. At times it will, and then at times it won't. Most of the time when it shows, he can not connect. We both have Network Magic, when having Network Magic try to fix the connection it never works. I have added his laptop on my devices. He has no problem connection with his Xbox. just the laptop, I am at a loss of what to do. Thanks

I assume that you are loosing both your wired and your wireless connection at the same time.  Is that correct?
The most common cause for this is peer-to-peer (P2P) software.  If you are running P2P software, go into the program and reduce the number of connections that the program makes.
If this is not your problem, please give more details.  Also, please include your router model and version, ISP, the make and model of your modem, and how your system is set up.

  • Trouble connecting to home WIFI with iphone5

Hi, I am currently experience technifcal difficulties with connecting to the internet (WIFI) with the iPhone 5.
After a day of purchasing the phone i have already used half of my internet data plan....assumingly that i was using WIFI as i have connected it to my home network..however that did not work and now i cant log into the intet using my own home WIFI
Will getting a new iPhone 5 help solve this issues?
    Please help!!!

The iPhone is designed after a period of non-use to disconnect the wifi, however upon waking the phone it should reconnect within a few seconds. You can try and forget the network and reset network settings, that may fix your issue. You can forget the network by going to Settings, wifi, and tap on the little blue arrow to the right side of your wifi network. Once that next screen opens, you can select Forget this network. Then try and connect again, put in the password and see if it connects. If not, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings, Then try and join again.

  • Having trouble connecting with home wifi on my phone.  It's always connected very easily.

Password is correct.  Phone "sees" the wifi, but not connecting.  I've disconnected, reconnected.  Turned phone off.  It says that the wifi is disabled.  All my other wifi devices are working ok.

This is odd, katpolz! When did this start? Have you done any changes on your device or updates that might of caused this to happen? What make/model phone do you have? Are you able to connect this device to other WiFi's ?

  • Having trouble connect to 5Ghz router. ROuter by Amped wireless.  No issues with 2.4Ghz, having trouble connecting AppleTV to 5Ghz router. Router by Amped wireless.  No issues with 2.4Ghz

I am using 2nd Generation AppleTV.  Like ot use 5Ghz singal for streaming.

Only the iPhone5 and newer supports 5Ghz wireless, do you have such an iPhone model?
The ATV Gen 3 supports 5Ghz, I've found nothing that says definitively whether the Gen 2 supports it or not.
Confirm that the Mac and iPad both support the 5Ghz standard.
This is a fairly new standard, so unless the device is less than a couple years old it's unlikely the devices support it.
