Trouble connecting to internet with older powerbook g4

Hi everyone, I don't know very much about Macs at all.
My uncle in law gave my stepson a Powerbook G4 laptop and I can't connect to the internet with it.
The airport wireless thing recognizes our grandma(who lives right next door) her wifi internet that we run my laptop on in the house (its windows though) it says the name of the network but once i type in the password which I know for a fact it's right since my other laptop is sitting right next to it running just fine with the same password (but i don't use her wifi i have my own ethernet connection, i just tried it to see if it works) so the password doesnt work
its the right password but i keep getting this message:
"This computer was unable to join the AirPort Network you selected. You may have entered an incorrect password (def. not,got a computer right next to it same password just fine) or network name, chosen the wrong type of wireless security, or you may be out of range of the base station (also def. not we're like just a few feet away). To change your previous choices click Go Back.

What system software version is the PowerBook running? You can check that by going to "About this Mac" under the apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen. Newer system software generally works better.
How many black arcs do you see in the signal strength indicator at the top right of the screen? You might have an old Airport card that doesn't have a lot of range. Try walking outside and closer to the signal source with the PowerBook and see if the signal strength improves. You might also try restarting, as that sometimes resets things that are out of whack.
Did you check to make sure you're using the right security type (WEP, etc)?
These are just some normal things to check on. Give more specifics on the computer and its software and you might get more help.
John

  • Trouble Connecting To Internet With Built-In Internet

    Hello everyone!
My iBook G4 is all of a sudden having trouble connecting to my Sprint DSL through the built-in Ethernet connection; in the Network preferences, there's a red light next to the Built-in Ethernet that warns: "The cable for built-in Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet."
When I open the tab for the Ethernet preferences, there's no IP address listed. I try to refresh the DHCP lease, nothing happens. There's an IPv6 address, but that doesn't seem to do anything for me. Restarting the computer and the modem don't help -- and Sprint is stumped and doesn't know what to do. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Thanks for the response -- I've tried restarting the Mac and the router multiple times; it doesn't help. Sometimes if the computer is shut down then turned back on (but not restarted), the Ethernet will be able to connect to the internet, until the computer goes to sleep.
Then, when it wakes up from sleep, the Ethernet's broken again. And for the past two days, no amount of shutting down and restarting is working. It's some kind of software glitch, but I just don't know how to fix it.

  • Trouble connecting to internet with usb adapter

I have a D-Link wireless usb adapter (DWL-122) that I have had for nearly a year with no problems until just recently. In the wireless preferences window it shows that I have a connection to my wireless network. However, when I try to open my web browser I get a message saying the server is not found. I am unable to access the internet in any way (itunes, instant messengers, etc.) as if i have no connection. If anyone has any idea as to what the problem would be I would appreciate any feedback. I am at a loss for ideas because as far as I can tell I appear to be connected to my network.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Lauren,
I was about to order the very same USB solution you are using, but then checked with a friend who's a network admin for the local diocese. He advised against this as a reliable solution & wanted me to just string a long wire. The wife acceptance factor nixxed that.
After checking the user reviews for this device on the Amazon site I found that there were many other Mac users who had been experiencing dropped connections using several different USB units like this one.
Your post doesn't say how far away from your router your iMac is positioned. Distance might be an issue for you, but not likely.
I presume you've already done the things your ISP would have suggested -- like resetting your modem, diagnosing software setup on your computer to see if anything there has changed, or repositioning the router?

  • Trouble connecting to internet with pc

Just got airport extreme. my mac can access network and internet just fine. having trouble with pc running xp. i am able to get on network but unable to access internet. is there a fix for this?

Did you unplug your modem after set up? You should recycle it if you haven't.
Type your router hex key, not passphrase, into your PC's wireless setup.
If you are using WEP, try typing a $ in front of the hex key.

  • Trouble connecting to internet with pppoe

I have a linksys wrt110.  I have configured the router following the advice in these forums.  I am at the end of my rope.  I can connect to the int when I bypass my router.  I can connect to my router via wireless.  But i can't connect to the int through my router...not even when hardwired to it.
So i checked my settings under 192.168.1.1.  Note that i have the router congigured for pppoe and have quadruple chedked my username and password.  They are correct and work when I connect directly to my modem.
I went to staus...it says disconnected.  When I hit connect, I get no error message.  Instead, the modem keeps cycling through the connection process abouut every 4-5 seconds--endlessly looping.  Any advice?

The following is a complete printout.  Glad it makes sense to someone.

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
    (3) Start up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
    (4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
    (5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.

  • Canny connect to internet with airport express

I was connected to internet with wireless network using airport xpress and D-link DSL-300T cable modemeverything was fine till i did base station fireware update. Now i can only connect wired with usb modem, (my airtunes still works). Airport status is green and states i am connected to internet via ethernet _though safria is unable to find server. Have tried loads of things but to no success. Tried network assist but network password invalid? though it is correct! Also done hard reset on xpress no joy.
Any mac guru s fancy a challenge!?
    Pls.

Likely your ISP uses the PPPoE protocol to connect to clients - and PPPoE doesn't work properly with firmware version 6.2 for the Airport Express.
Downgrade the firmware on your Airport Express back to version 6.1.1 with this software:

    Hi bikernblondie,
When you say that you're trying to connect to the internet with USB, do you mean that you're trying to connect your iPod to the internet so that you can surf the internet with a browser on your iPod, or that you're trying to connect your iPod to your computer so that you can sync it with iTunes and bring over songs, movies, apps, etc.?

I can connect to internet with my MBP through Airport Extreme, but my iOS devices can't. Please help.

GerleMan, Welcome to the discussion area!
    There are two probably causes:
Your ISP is blocking the port used by Entourage to send mail and the ISP used by the other wireless networks is not.
    OR
Your ISP doesn't like OS X's default MTU seting of 1500. If this were the case it should also affect any large file transfers you try to make from your Mac to the Internet.

Ok..So you mean still cannot accessing the website with Internet connection? Try to use nslookup in command prompt to check whether can resolve domain name correctly. Also make sure you can ping the router's LAN IP from computer.
If not, you can try to use the following DNS servers from OpenDNS.com:
    208.67.220.220
    208.67.222.222

  • TROUBLE CONNECTING TO ICLOUD WITH WINDOWS XP

Like others I have had trouble connecting to icloud from my work (windows XP PRO) computer using Internet Explorer 8.
I have found that adding Safari for windows to my work computer and using it to access icloud works.
    RogerCollie

I think I didn't explain it clearly enough.
I have the cable modem connected to the WAN port of the Linksys router (not wireless).
The computer is connected to a LAN port of the router.
The Airport Extreme Base Station (not the new one, one of the older round ones) is connected to another LAN port of the router.
On Mac OS, I can use DHCP to connect.
On the Windows OS (XP through Bootcamp), DHCP doesn't connect me. I can only connect if I change its network connection settings to manual (fixed IP).
I really only have 2 questions:
    1. Why can't I use DHCP in Windows?
    and
    2. Is there any problem with using the fixed IP? (Is it allowed if your ISP didn't give you one? Or is it that the ISP doesn't see it as a fixed IP, if the modem goes through the router first?)
I may be asking questions that don't matter, but I'm just curious to know whether I'm setting this up right.
