Trouble connecting to other nodes on network

Within the last month or so, I've noticed that I cannot connect to other nodes which are on my network from my MacBook. More specifically, I have a Buffalo Linkstation Network Attached Storage drive (wired), a Windows XP PC (wired), and my wife's MacBook (wireless), all connected via a Netgear WNR854T router. Whenever I browse to the "Network" in Finder, all of the machines display icons, however when I double-click on one, I get the following message: "The alias 'xyz' could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." I get options to "Delete Alias" or "Fix Alias". When I attempt to delete the alias I get the error message that I do not have the appropriate privileges for the corresponding machine.
I don't get this problem, however, when I try to connect to my wife's MacBook or when I'm connecting to my MacBook from another machine. When using the PC (or the virtual machine in Parallels), I see my MacBook and can connect and browse files to my heart's content. In addition, my wife has not experienced any of these problems when connecting. She can see the network attached drive, the PC, etc. and can connect without issue.
One interesting thing I did notice is that if I use the "Go -> Connect to Server" and type the IP address of, say, the NAS, it will allow me to mount the volumes (folders I have on the NAS). Although interestingly enough, the folder I really want isn't displayed as an option to mount even though, once again, I can get to it from any other machine except this MacBook.
I haven't (knowingly) changed any configuration setting and the only hardware change I've made to my network is replacing an old Netgear router with this new one last week. But as I've mentioned, I had been experiencing this problem even with the older router. Does anyone have any suggestions which will help me get back to browsing my network like I used to?

Firstly, a note of caution... You need to take care when editing NetInfo, because if you make a mistake, you could render your account (or someone elses) unusable.
When you connect to a network with a Mac OS X server present, you can receive network settings via DHCP. Deleting mcx_cache wil reset all of these settings, which will hopefully restore your Mac to the way it was before. To do this, go into NetInfo Manager, which you'll find here:
Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager
Click on the padlock icon (bottom left) and autheticate as an administrator. Click on the "/" menu, which should be in the far-left column. In the sub-menu to the right, there should be an item called mcx_cache. Click on this, and then click on the Delete button, and confirm you want to delete.
Now quit out of NetInfo Manager and restart your Mac. When you check your Network icon in the Finder, it's contents should be back to normal.

  • Trouble Connecting to Other computers in Network

Hi. I have quite a few computers in our local home network, via an apple airport extreme. There's three G4's running Tiger, and a few G5's running Leopard. I'm able to connect to any of the 3 Tiger based G4's by opening the network, and selecting "share screen" on which ever computer I want to run. It works fine. However, I cant seem to log into any of the Leopard G5's from the G4 computers. I dont know if it has to do with the fact that, they're Leopard, or that they're G5's. Whenever I got to Network up at the top under the "Go" pane, nothing comes up when you click it. I tried manually connecting with their IP addresses using the "connect to server" function under Go, doesnt work either. None of the Leopard computers appear under the network, only the older computers. Any suggestions on how I can connect the Tiger computers to the newer Leopards? I dont see a share screen function anywhere on Tiger.

Okay, so you can get from a Leopard to a Leopard and from a Leopard to a Tiger okay then, right? But what you can't do is get from a Tiger to a Tiger or from a Tiger to a Leopard, right? And that's what you are inquiring how to do, right?
Tiger to Tiger: Unless you have paid the small phenomenal fee for Apple Remote Desktop Client program for your Tiger computers, as near as I can tell, you're going to have to use VNC to do what you are trying to do. This post has several links to some other posts that tell how to do VNC encrypted through a secure shell tunnel from across the internet at large, Tiger to Tiger; a little more than what you are asking; but a subset of those directions apply here. On your home subnet, you don't need to worry about tunneling through secure shell and in the VNC client program; rather than connect to "localhost:5901" as described in all those posts, you'd just connect to {computerNameOrIPAddressOnYourHomeNetwork}. However, all the descriptive text in all those posts about how to configure the Tiger machine as a VNC server, which requires both Apple Remote Desktop and VNC to be enabled in the remote server computer's System Preferences, still applies in the local subnet case just as it does in the internet-at-large case.
Tiger to Leopard: Can't be definitive on this one, but I would suspect that there will be a similar process to enable VNC server on the Leopard, as was described in all those Tiger-to-Tiger posts. Again, this assumes that you don't want to, or haven't already, put out a bunch of money for Apple Remote Desktop Client for your Tigers. If you have the ARD client, I am guessing it is a no-brainer for both the Tiger-to-Leopard and Tiger-to-Tiger scenarios. Otherwise, I don't see how you will get this capability unless you can enable a VNC server service (along with the ARD server) in the remote server Leopard's (and the remote server Tiger's) system preferences, and run a VNC client like Chicken of the VNC or JollyFastVNC on the local client Tiger computer that you are sitting in front of.
PS: and we're not worrying about file sharing or remote login not working, are we? At least not yet?

  • Unable to Connect to Other Computers on Network

We have a small network of 4 Macs and suddenly one of our computers cannot connect to other computers on the network. We have file sharing turned on all the Macs, and the other computers can connect to this G4 733 DA, but the G4 DA can "see" the other computers, but when I try to connect I get the message that the connection failed.
Is there any solution other than reloading Tiger? In system 9 it was simple to just reload the networking extension if it was damaged, but I am not sure for what to search to fix this problem.
    G4/1GHz, 7600 w/G3/500 MHz , G4/733 MHz Server   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Since all the computers are "seeing" each other, I would try to do a "Repair Permissions" from the Disk Utility on the G4 DA...and, if that doesn't help, try the "Repair Disk" option before reloading Tiger. Sometimes, when OS X can't access system files properly, you see "strange" errors like these.

  • Cannot connect to other computers on network. HELP!

Using a G-5 dual 2.0 with 10.4.10 and I am having issues with networking and connecting to other computers on my network. This is an intermittent problem. When I try to connect <go> <connect to server><browse> the computers on the network do not show up(in the network window) all the time. Sometimes they will if I restart and sometimes not. Why is this happening? I have 4 other machines and they are all fine. I can connect to if but not from it.

  • Trouble connecting wireless f4580 printer to network

    Hi
I have just brought this printer & am having problems connecting it wirelessly. I have a Livebox that Orange sent me.
On screen it says the printer has successfully joined the network. its only when it prints a wireless network test report im having problems. It prints out a page that has the following printed on it
'More than one access point/wireless router has been found that matches your wireless network name (SSID) If this is not intended, your HP printer may connect to the wrong wireless network
If you change your network name, you will need to configure the SSID on all wireless devices to match your new network SSID'

    No filtering - FAIL

    downlink count - 0
    Channel - not run
    Network name - livebox
Hardware adress (MAC) - f4:ce:xx:xx:xx:xx (have blanked out some as i dont know whether i should have it displayed on a forum as i dont know what the numbers mean, lol)
    IP address - not applicable
    configuration source - not applicaible
    Comunication source - Infastructure
    Authentication Type - WPA-PSK
Encryption - Automatic (AES or TKIP)
    what am i doing wrong?
    Thank you

I think that Orange is a DSL service, right?
    Try this:
Sometimes DSL providers have more control over the router than the printer likes.
    - Unplug the telephone line from the router
    - Turn the power off on the router, wait 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.
    - Go through the normal process of connecting the printer to the device.
    - Now find the IP address of the printer (it should be on the self-test printout), type it into a browser.
    - In screen you will find a Networking Tab, then on the left Wireless, then the IPv4 Tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you know what that is, set an IP outside that range but no higher than 255 (the last number in the address).
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Use the router's IP address for the gateway and the first DNS (leave the second blank).
    - Finally, plug in the phone line and test.

  • Trouble connecting iPhones to home wifi network

Hi, I posted this over in the Airport discussions a few days ago and have them stumped so they recommended I bring it over here.
I'm having all sorts of trouble trying to get my iPhone and iPad to connect to my new Airport Express. I know the network I set up is working because my iMac and Appletv work fine with it, so the trouble is finding out why the others won't connect. When I select my wifi network on the phone the circle starts spinning around while it tries to connect, but it just keeps going and going and never really connects.
I have tried resetting everything, renewing leases, forgetting networks and rejoining them, changed network name and password, all with no avail.
I used to have the old AE that plugged straight into the outlet (hardly ever had problems with it either until it broke, and all devices worked fine with it) and I just bought the latest AE with the cord and dual ports. It is currently running the latest 7.6.4 but I can only downgrade to 7.6.3 which it came with.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

And after updating your firmware did you restart your router, computer, and iPhone and try again?

  • Trouble connecting to a hidden WiFi network

My MacBook (MB470) fails to connect to network with hidden SSID. There are three things that make me think that there's something wrong with adapter's firmware or another hardware problem.
    1) Other PCs and iPhones connect to that hotspot successfully (Trendnet);
    2) Macbook doesn't connect even from WinXP SP2 (it doesn't see the network).
    3) My MacBook perfectly works with my hidden hotspot at home which use much more secure features (D-Link 2640 ADSL WiFi hotspot);
Have anybody seen something like that?

Yes, all settings are correct. I spent more than two hours trying different hotspot and MacBook configurations, but the only thing I found out is that MacBook fails to connect when network SSID is hidden.
As soon as we unhide SSID Macbook connects and work perfectly.
By the way, my colleague told me he also failed to configure his HP laptop running Vista with that hotspot. Although there are 20-30 laptops and iPhones that work normally in that network and we never experienced any troubles setting them up.
No, OSX doesn't provide any details except "Connection timeout" message.

  • Cannot connect to other computers on network

We have a small office network with 7 macs on it. 5 wired 2 laptops with Airport Extreme.
We have an 8 port switch where the 5 desktops and the airport connect. When I am on a laptop I cannot connect to any of the desktops. It does not even see them (and same with desktop to laptop) What do I need to do to share these two on the airport

Configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) so that it the option to distribute IP addresses is DISABLED. That will place the wireless and wired computers on the same subnet.

  • Can't connect to other mac on network

I have three MacBook Pros on my WiFi network - two are late 2011 models running Lion (one is mine and one is my husband's) and a late 2014 model running Yosemite.
I have File Sharing turned on on all three computers and they all have shared folders showing in the panel.
Both Lion computers can connect to my Yosemite computer, the Yosemite computer can connect to my husband's Lion computer, but neither he from his Lion computer nor I from my Yosemite computer can connect to my Lion computer.
Why would that be?  I get the message "There was a problem connecting to the server "myOldMac'sName". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and they try again."
But... I can see my Lion computer in the sidebar of a Yosemite finder window, along with my husband's Lion computer and the rest of my Shared devices, but it just won't connect.  I have restarted more than once.
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Trouble Connecting Printer to my Wireless Network

I cannot connect my HP Photosmart C4599  to my wireless network. When I try to access the URL for the EWS http://0.0.0.0/ (listed as the EWS on my network config page) , it says no data received, and hence I've hit a roadblock. I've visted the support page at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3757826& but still haven't resolved the issue. Please help, thanks!

    Hello @MikeDSF,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are experiencing issues when connecting your HP Photosmart C4599 All-in-One Printer wirelessly to your Mac OS X 10.9 Operating System. I would like to offer you my assistance with this. Now, support options are limited as you do not have a downloadable HP Full Feature Software and Driver for your HP Photosmart printer on the Mac OS X 10.9 operating system. Therefore, you will be relying on your Apple Updates to load the driver functionality of your printer on your computer. This also means that you cannot run the standard wireless setup that you will see under the HP Photosmart User Guide as you have no standard Wireless Setup utility without any HP Drivers. In saying that, the IP Address of all 0's is not valid. All 0's tells us that your printer is not on your wireless network at all. At least we have a nice clean slate to work with.
Because your HP Photosmart has no HP Full Feature Software and Drivers on Mac OS X 10.9 the wireless setup is going to be very challenging, unless you have a computer that is using a supported Operating System. We could run the wireless setup on the supported Operating System and simply 'add' your printer into your Mac OS X 10.9 computer once the wireless is setup.
Your printer is supported with HP Full Feature Software and Driver on Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.6. There are no HP Full Feature Drivers for Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, or 10.10.
Your printer is also support with an HP Full Feature Software and Driver on Windows XP through to Windows 8.1.
Please let me know if using a supported Operating System is an option just for the initial Wireless Setup. Once I know what option works best for you I will be able to provide additional support options. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Trouble connecting IPhone to my wireless network

I have recently experienced problems connecting my Iphone to my wireless network. I have had the phone for 3 months and this problem has only come up recently. Previously I had no problems connecting, and my girlfriend's Iphone can still get onto my network. I searched everywhere for an answer but most of them involved altering the router settings and since my gf's Iphone still connects, I don't believe it has anything to do with my router and or it's settings. I have reset my Iphone network settings before to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello jesse_222,
    Welcome to the Discussions Boards.
Since your girlfriend's iPhone connects to the network OK, then it's probably not a configuration or security settings issue with your wireless network.
You mentioned you've reset network settings on the iPhone, have you also updated the iPhone to the current 2.2.1 software?
Have you actually powered the iPhone off (not just putting it to sleep) since this issue began?
Are you using any type of carrying case on the iPhone? One with a magnetic component?
Intermittent connectivity can be caused by cached data on your WiFi router or modem.
Try power cycling both your WiFi router and modem by actually removing the main power cord from both for several minutes (5 minutes will successfully reset all but the most stubborn device). Power up the modem first and wait until the LEDs are done with their startup dance. Power up the WiFi router.
If you have a VoIP modem from your cable company, it may have a backup battery inside that will prevent the modem from resetting even with main power removed. That battery is generally installed under a cover on the modem. Check with your ISP for information on removing the battery if that is the case.
Out-of-date firmware on your WiFi router can cause similar behavior. If you have a combination modem/WiFi router from your ISP, check with them for any firmware updates.
If all of the above do not resolve the issue, you may need to restore your iPhone:
