Trouble connecting to the internet...

Hiya chaps
A query for a friend of mine who was lucky enough to get a black macbook £350 cheaper than retail...
Trouble is, she cannot get it to connect to her internet. I don't really know where to start. But i know that she gets this message
"the selected network uses an access control list to restrict access and this computer is not on the list"
I presume this means that she just has to add her mac to the access list on her main computer.
Just wanted to know of any better ideas. Apologies if this question is slightly vague, but i'm aware that the members of this forum are extremely helpful...
Thank you
Nick
Macbook 13'3" Black   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Indeed, she most probably uses an authorization system for her network, so that she has to add the MAC-address of each computer which is allowed on the network manually.
Of course I don't know how she configured her network (router, other method,...) but I do know that some routers offer this security option; so you have to add the MacBooks MAC-address to the "allowed-list".

    Hi there bigyellowdigger!
I have an article here that can help you troubleshoot this issue with your connection to the iTunes Store. That article can be found right here:

  • Having trouble connecting to the internet

Hi everybody for the last month or so my internet connection has been disconnecting from the internet. I’ll open Safari then a error message appears telling me that I am not connected to the internet. All 3 lights on my modem are green indicating that the Modem (2wire home portal) is working. I opened ND to try to fix the problem the status settings indicate that ISP failed, and server failed. I called Apple technical support for help but they blamed the modem for causing this to happen. I went out and bought another modem hoping that a new modem would fix the problem, but it did not, Same error message “ you are not connected to the internet.” I called my ISP about 10 times there are no server outages in my area. I ran numerous hardware test to see if the hardware was corrupted, all test came back negative.
I am using a 2wire home portal (Non wireless) I have a Intel i mac core duo maxed out. I have no software installed on this computer ( other then the software that shipped with the i mac. I never download anything off the internet (Not even a widget) I don’t what else to do... I don’t want to take the computer to a Apple store because I’m most cretin that nothing is wrong with the computer plus the nearest Apple store is almost 200 mile away from where I live.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

This is frequently solved in the Network section of System Preferences. Assuming your "Location:" reads "Automatic" then verify your Network Port Configurations. I don't have a cable modem setup, but imagine "Built-in Ethernet" is what you're using, and if so, that should be primary. Be sure to "Apply Now" once a new setting is selected.
If you recall set-up, did your iMac discover the connection immediately, or was it necessary to add information to the Ethernet panel? Since your network was functioning before the iMac set-up, the iMac should have discovered it on its own and you should not have had to enter any info.
If that was not what happened, I'd scrap the Network settings, return all to defaults, and start over with the iMac discovering the connection on its own.
    Edit-
One other thing that might be different from your PC's, check the Energy Saver's Sleep panel to see that you have unchecked the "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible" and see if that helps at all.

  • My Airport base station has a status message that says "This AirPort base station doesn't have any DNS server addresses and might have trouble connecting to the internet." What does this mean and how can I fix it?

My internet is still working, but it's very intermittent. This happened after I updated the firmware a few days ago.

Did you remember to completely power cycle the entire network?
You would want to do this after any update or change to the network.
If you did not do this yet......things are out of sequence.
Power off everything on the network.....all devices.....power down order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Work your way out on the network starting each device about a minute apart
    Check the network

  • ITunes Having Troubles Connecting To The Internet

So for about a week now iTunes has had an error saying "Could not complete the iTunes Store request. The store may be busy. Check yout Internet connection or try again later." And on every picture except the ones that rotate at the top and the ones in the middle of the middle of the main page of the store there is a little pic that is a brocken chain link. The iTunes music store works on all our 5 Macs except for our Mac Mini. I am trying to buy and album and it would let me go to the albums page so I individualy added each song into my cart and they arent downloading. An error saying comes up saying "There were problems downloading some purchased items.
For more information on the items that could not be downloaded, click below.
Could not connect to the server to download “Rapgirl / The Graduate / MC Lars”.
Please check the status of your internet connection in your web browser." (It does this for every song.)
I have reset my internet connection and I am using hte internet right now because I am posting this message.
    Anyone know what to do?

I could get onto both of those apps quickly with the previous download, i current have iOS. 6
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

I have no more tricks up my sleeve other than maybe it is a firewall issue with your router.
You can tap or click on the heading below and read Apple's take on the issue. I really don't hold out much hope though that his kb article has any more to offer to you, but I am out of ideas now.

  • Can't connect to the internet on G5 iMac PPC Tiger

I'm having trouble connecting to the Internet with my Newer Tech Ethernet Adaptor (NT-802.11gb-USB).  It was working and my printer was too but now neither will connect.
When I enter a new "test location" in Network>Status I get these  alternating responses:
"The cable for Ethernet Adaptor (en1) is not plugged in."
"Ethernet Adaptor (en1) is currently active.  Ethernet Adaptor (en1) has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the      internet."
I know it was able to connect as it was working a couple of days ago.  Network>Diagnostics tells me it is not connected but my Newer>Tech Link Status tells me it is connected with Link quality and signal strength both at 100%.
Now ithe NT>LinkStatus  is alternating on "connected/disconnected".  The stick is flickering as though the flow is cutting in and out.  Is this normal?  I have reset my router and changed the USB location for the NT stick.
IP Address: 169.254.110.164  When I try to connect on this machine I get the  message "....the connection has times out."  "....is taking too long to respond".
Trouble shooting for the NT adaptor says the channel may be overloaded or interfered with in some way (my neighbors connection was alternating with mine yesterday)  but I don't know how to change the channel on my other computers.

My familiarity with wireless is that a router works on a single selected channel.  A wireless device scans the 11 available channels for wireless (in reality only three channels, 1 ,6, 11, because of overlap), sees a router on a specific channel and then connects to it over that channel.  I don't set my Mac to channel 6; the node to which I connect uses channel 6 so my computer uses 6 with that node. If I change connections, my computer automatically shifts channel for the node I request.
I can set up my computer as a wireless server, and I believe I then specify a specific channel.
If I am connecting to a node on channel 6 one block away and my neighbor is using channel 6 I may get cut out because their router is producing a stronger signal than my computer and even if I can see the node, it can't see me.  Since my ISP won't change node channels, in the past I have literally leafleted the neighborhood begging people to not use channel 6.  They are the ones setting which channel their routers use and I don't know who or where they are (except very roughly on the basis of signal strength) so I just have to hope new people to the area don't use channel 6 (which I believe is unfortunately the default for many).  If you are seeing a flaky connection then it is possible you are experiencing something similar to me, especially at night when everybody is streaming video (actually using the wireless channel) and I can get cut off from my connection for up to 2 hours at a time.  Where is your router located?

  • Where is the "I cannot connect to the Internet" button?

Apparently, according to this page here you should be able to maually activate on a compnuter that can't connect to the internet?  Where do you do so on InDesign CS6?

So just for fun I decided to see what would happen if I shut down my network card and tried an install. Turns out I was able to force the links to appear. Here's how I did it:
    Installed Production Premium as trial.
    Disabled my network adapter.
Ran the Installer again, it accepted my License Key, completed.
    Launched Photoshop
Got a message that Internet was required for activation with a link "Having trouble connecting to the Internet?"
Clicked that link and got a second page for with the "This Computer cannot connect to the Internet" link
Lead to a third page with an Offline Activation button
This generated the request code, which I was able to use to get a response code and successfully activate Production Premium.
I attempted the same process to install Indesign and unfortunately no matter how many times I attempted it each time I got a message that the response code was invalid. So half way there with some of my upgrades.
It seems the key is to shut down the network altogether. If the activator detecs any kind of connection, it won;t give you the offline prompts. Hope this helps some others.
Adobe: please explain why you do not document this, but make bone-headed reccomendations like "disable the authentication proxy"? (like anyone working behind an authentication proxy has the authority to disable it!) Why did I spend an hour with a tech support rep digging around my system, when I clearly stated upfront that your tools could not navigate our security and that our security was absolute, inflexible and would not change? The rep should have told me in the first minute of the chat that I need to completely disable my network connection and install again.
I mean seriously this is four days invested in just trying to install legally licensed software and I am not done yet as InDesign hasn't activated yet.

  • Premiere Elements - Please connect to the internet and retry.

I am connected to the internet, my clock is right, and I've done the troubleshooting steps from the help pages. Still no luck. I can't seem to figure out how to generate a "request" code to go the offline activation route, as I don't get the error link mentioned in the help file. Any ideas?
    Internet Connection Issues
    Temporarily Offline
If your computer is temporarily offline (travel, internet connection issues etc.), simply go online within 7 days of the first launch of your Adobe product to complete an online activation and registration.
    Permanently Offline
If your computer is permanently offline (i.e. secure environments like government, banking etc.) you need to complete an offline activation within 7 days of the first launch of the software otherwise it will stop working. You need an internet enabled device and your product's serial number to complete this process.
    1.
Follow the installation or product launch screens until you see a link that says "I cannot connect to the internet" or "Having trouble connecting to the internet" [this never appears]. Click the link and follow the instructions on the subsequent screen to initiate offline activation. Instructions there will tell you how to generate a Request Code.
    2.
    Use an internet-enabled device to
    Generate a Response Code
. Sign in and enter the machine specific Request Code as well as your product's serial number.
    3.
Enter the Response Code on the installation or launch product screen of your offline computer when you are prompted to complete the offline activation process.
    Notes:
    - The Request Code is machine-specific and valid for 72 hours. If it takes longer than 72 hours to complete this process, simply generate a new Request Code.
    - Volume customers should consider using the free Adobe Application Manager Enterprise Edition (AAMEE) 3.0 to package Creative Suite applications. By packaging their volume license using AAMEE 3.0, only the IT Admin needs to complete a one-time activation and sign-in, not individual users. Click
    here
    for more information.

    See if this helps:
Please connect to the internet and retry.

  • IMac won't connect to the internet

I am having trouble connecting to the internet. Network Status says "built in ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 10.1.1.2. You are connected to teh internet via built-in ethernet"... but I can't connect. Until recently, these same settings worked with my Macbook. Now I'm having the same problem with it. Apple has no idea. I sometimes get a pop-up that says my network settings have been changed by an application.Any ideas?

Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.

  • I just upgraded to firefox 6 and now cannot connect to the internet. IE still works fine but firefox won't connect. Any suggestions on how to get the new firefox to connect to the internet?

I just upgraded to ff 6.0.1 via an automatic push. Since then, ff hasnt been able to connect to the internet. Error message:
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com.
IE has no trouble connecting to the internet.

After upgrading, your firewall may not be recognizing the new Firefox version and is not allowing it access to the internet. On your firewall progam's allowed applications list, remove Firefox, then re-start Firefox, try going to a website, your firewall will detect the new version of Firefox, then give the permissions needed for Firefox to have internet access.

  • My signal strength is good but I cannot connect to the internet

I just moved and I am having trouble connecting to the internet. I can get on when I am plugged in directly to the ethernet cable, but when I attempt to use the airport express, it won't work. Both of my computers show that they are connected to the airport and that the signal is strong, but safari won't work... I attempted to reset my airport, but still no luck. Anyone know what to do? Thanks.
    Brian

Compare the IP address of your Mac (as see in the Network panel of System Preferences) when it's directly connected to the broadband modem to the WAN IP address of the AirPort Express as seen in AirPort Utility) when it's so connected.  The two values should match except for the last group of digits.
It may be that you need to reset the modem so that it will connect to a "new" device.  That can require removing power from it for anywhere from a minute to 15 minutes, pressing a reset button, or several other more extreme steps.

  • Ipad 2 won't connect to the internet as it use to with my sim card

My sim card was working fine in my ipad2. about a week ago or so I noticed that it was having trouble connecting to the internet. It will say "no service", the bars would be really low. I never had this happen before. I went to my provider and got a new sim card and even with the new sim card I am having the same trouble. I checked my sim card with someone elses ipad2 and it works fine. it connects right away. What can I do to resolve this?

Ok. Do other things work on your home internet?
Generally, you go into settings, wifi and you should see the name of your home network. Tap on that and you should be prompted to enter the password you set up on your network (presuming it's password protected).
If it just stopped working, you can always try to power cycle the router....as in unplug the router's power. Count to ten, plug it back in and let it reboot.
