Trouble connecting to USB Harddisk

Hi all,
I recently bought an AEBS to set up a wireless network for my Windows PC and Laptop. So far so good, both wintel machines can connect to internet, and both can print to the USB printer hooked to the AEBS.
I also connected a USB harddisk to the AEBS, but only my laptop can connect to it. My workstation fails and keeps telling me that the supplied password is incorrect, no matter what I try: client access or disk access.
*One more thing I like to know:*
How can I create a share on my Desktop that will be visible for my laptop. I used to have this when I had everything wired with a simple router. But now I have it all wireless, and I cannot figure out how to do this (sharing directories and/or disks) because Windows does not show the wireless network in "available network places" (or whatever this is called).
Thanks

Questions not valid anymore. Dropped the Windows PC and am now completely Mac orientated

  • Trouble connecting to USB storage device on WRT160NL with Mac 0S X 10.5

I recently purchased a WRT160NL router with usb link for NAS storage and media server capabilities.  Internet connectivity works fine and I can log in to change router settings with no probelm, but I can not connect to the usb drive that is connected to the router, when using my Mac with OS X 10.5.  My XBox360 picks it up as a media server with no problems.
I followed the instructions on Linksys.com
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=16796
It appeared to work the first time, but then I ejected the network connections, admin and guest.  It has not worked since.
I open my browser and paste smb://192.168.1.1 into the address bar and hit enter.  Then I get an error message that reads:
    Connection failed
There was an error connecting to the server.  Check the server name or IP address and try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
I select ok and get another error message that says:
Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct.
I know that, according to Linksys, the next step is to  put in name and password, but I never get that option.
I have also double checked the IP address to make sure it is correct, which it is.
I just want to be able to read and write media to the network drive from my laptop and play the media from my xbox360.
    Can anyone help?

    Thank you for your response.
So, when I go to http://192.168.1.1 I have no problem finding the drive under the storage tab.  When going deeper into the settings it also shows all of the contents of that drive.  So it is definitely connected to the router.  Though I still cannot access it through smb://192.168.1.1.
And yes, the drive shows up as it should if it is plugged directly into my computer.
I powered the router down for about 10 or 15 minutes and powered it back up.  Still having the same problem.
I believe the problem is with OS X 10.5 Leopard.  The first time I tried this, when it appeared to work, I checked the box for remember my password.  At the time it was still the default password.  I changed the password since then, yet now I am not given an option to put in the password since Leopard tries to log me in automatically.  I cannot find a way to undo that auto log in.
Of course I am not absolutely certain that is the problem, but if anyone knows how to undo the auto log in that might help.
    Any ideas?

There are a number of posts related to copying issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Usb-harddisk can´t include in time machine backup

    Hello,
I have a problem including a 2 TB USB Harddisk (Fat32 formatted) with one volume. With OS Lion, it is no problem to read/write on it. But, it is not possible to include the volume (384 GB data written on it) to time machine. It appears, but it could not be marked in the menue for "not including". Also a 16 GB FAT32 USB Stick could not marked for including in the time machine options.
The time machine volume is a seconde usb harddisk with 1 TB. Everything is connected by usb.
    Thank you very much

Yes, same thing there. TM will only back up "Mac Extended" formatted drives. Any FAT32, NTFS, etc, drives, sticks or cards will not get backed up.

  • When iPhone 5s is connected via USB no audio is heard

    Hi There -
I've seen older threads on this issue but I don't think I've really come across any solutions. My issue started yesterday; now before reading further I have to ask that you please keep in mind that I did perform the latest upgrade on my iPhone a bit earlier in the day.
When I connect my iPhone to my vehicle sync system and announce that I'd like to connect via USB, the voice recognition repeats my request and then the music on my iPhone shows to be playing on the display in my vehicle. The problem is that though the music appears to be playing and the minutes played are being displayed there is no audio coming through. When I switch to the Bluetooth Audio option all sound comes through.
Now, as a 2nd test, we connected my sons iPhone 5s via USB (he has not taken the latest update on his iPhone) and the same issue happens with his. Voice recognition changes to the USB format as requested, music appears to be playing but no audio is heard. When we change his phone to Bluetooth Audio the audio comes through nice and clear.
I'm not entirely convinced the update caused the issue so I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone has run into this and were able to actually resolve the issue.
I know the USB cable is working fine because when I do plug it into either phone the phone makes the little connection sound and pops up a brief battery percentage box. I also know the cable is working because when we announce USB as our audio of choice the system recognize USB via the iPhone.
One other thing I tried looking for was the option on the phone to switch from Docked to Synch - I know on my iPhone 4 I was able to switch back and forth through iTunes and would also have the option if I tried to watch anything via You Tube when connected to the dock; I cannot find this anywhere on the 5s when connected via USB.
    Help is greatly appreciated!!!

I have had similar troubles with wifi.. some improvement removing BlackBerry desktop software & drivers & reinstalling after reboot... I used the same installer I had previously, but a fresh downloaded installer couldn't hurt...

  • Can I connect a USB 2 sound card to a Macbook equipped only with USB 3 ports?

    Hello,
I just learned I might have to purchase a new Macbook because my USB ports are fried and I was looking at purchasing a refurbished Macbook pro from 2012:
    http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FD101LL/A/refurbished-133-inch-macBook-pro-25g hz-dual-core-intel-i5
the only trouble is I make music with a MOTU Audio Express sound card, and it only has a USB 2 port and a bus-powered Firewire (which I don't like using since it hasn't been too reliable in the past).
    http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/audio-express/summary.html
Unfortunately, it seems that the Macbook I'm looking into purchasing only has USB 3 ports, and I looked for info on USB 3->USB 2 adapters online and this simply doesn't seem to exist. The only info I managed to find on this subject was this little bit on the Apple website:
Can a USB 2 cable be used to connect a USB 3 device to my computer?
If the device end of the cable fits into the connector on the device, yes. However, because it has fewer wires, you won't get USB 3 speed and power may be limited to 500 mA.
does this mean that I can connect a USB 2 cable from the USB 2 port of the MOTU sound card to the USB 3 port on the Macbook? I'm OK with the power and the speed being limited to USB 2 power, I just want to make sure I can actually use my sound card with this new Macbook.
    Thanks!

I think I'm understanding this a bit more now.
Here is the cable that I use:
    http://www.amazon.ca/USB-Cable-Type-Male-Black/dp/B00183I7EE
The Type A part is the one that I'm currently putting into the Macbook and the Type B part goes in the sound card.
Would this work with a USB 3.0 port on the Macbook?
Thanks for your time and patience...

  • TS2756 I can no longer connect via USB/service missing

..& my iPhone does not show up on the list anymore.  I can still use Wi-Fi, though.  I would like to be able to use the USB connection again.  Resetting the network settings doesn't help.  BTW, I'm using it with my MacBook Pro running 10.7.5 and my iPhone has the latest iOS update as well.
When I first got the phone, I always used my internet connection via USB, but then it started giving me trouble.  I tried all kinds of suggestions that I found here and it was a real crap shoot -- sometimes it worked, and sometimes not.  Now it just won't work at all.  I recently deleted my iPhone from the list of services thinking that the next time I plugged it in, it would recreated the service.  It did not.  So, I'm still using it as before: just connecting over Wi-Fi (the network is still available, it just doesn't show up in my list of services on the left-hand column under "network").
Anyone have any suggestions that they know will fix this?

Hi DaveX83 and welcome to the discussions.
    A few things to try.
Press the reset button once on the back of your Extreme and let it restart. Check for proper operation.
If no help there, keep the ethernet cable connected, and open Airport Utility. Click on Manual Setup near the bottom of the pane. On the next screen click the Airport icon at the upper left of the pane, then click Wireless in the line just below that reads Summary - Time Capsule - Wireless - Access.
Check to see that your wireless is set up, security set up, passwords, etc. You may need to reconfigure your wireless settings again and update the Extreme to store them and restart.
    Hope this helps.

  • I had trouble connecting my External hard drive

I had trouble connecting my External hard drive (My passport WD) with my macbook. It worked before but not now. The external hard disk is blinking and is spinning but just not showing up on my computer. I tried looking in disk utility and no theres no sign of the disk showing up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, I saw a post on one of these threads about a powered USB hub so I ran over to Office Depot and picked one up.  I was finally able to see the HD in the Airport Utility.  Yay!

  • Install Arch on hard disk connected via USB

    Hi,
    anyone tried this?
I had Arch Linux installed on hdd in my desktop, now I've connected this hdd to laptop via USB and I want to start system from it. I need to reinstall lilo, because I get kernel panic after booting from USB.
I don't know how to do this, I boot laptop from Archie Live CD and:
    mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/m
    chroot /mnt/m
    editing /etc/lilo.conf
    lilo
and I get error: Failed stat("/dev/dsa2")
Anyone know how to install lilo on hdd connected via USB?
    thanks for any help

i know it's an old thread, but perhaps it'll help someone else later...
i first tried installing from cd, with some problems, using an arch 0.7 cd.
then i tried it with a newer one (arch 0.7.1) which did'nt recognize the external harddisk and my network device...
so i tried a ftp install from 0.7 cd - without problems.
then after trying to boot i got also this kernel panic, because the usb drive wasn't accessible like this.
with following steps i got it running:
boot from live cd (e.g. archie)
    create a folder in /mnt/
mount usb drives partition with the installation there
    chroot to mounted folder
    edit /etc/mkinitrd.conf
configure it (usb, scsi, ide), there are useful comments in the file...
save it and run mkinitrd -auto
then edit and save /etc/lilo.conf as described in the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Initrd
installing lilo from the chrooted system doesn't work. so do this:
    type exit (to leave chroot)
    cd /
    mv /etc/ /etcold/
    mv /boot/ /bootold/
    ln -s /mnt/yourmountfolder/boot
    ln -s /mnt/yourmountfolder/etc
    lilo
(if there's an other, easyer way to install lilo, let me know)
    and then reboot...

  • Trouble connecting Windows 2000 PC to Airport Extreme

I'm having trouble connecting a PC running Windows 2000 to my Airport Extreme Base Station. The PC is using a D-Link wireless USB 2.0 adapter (802.11g) to connect to the internet. The PC would connect without problem when I was using a D-Link wireless router but will not connect with the new Apple base station.
In addition to the Windows 2000 PC I have a Windows XP PC (connected via ethernet), an iBook G4 and an Epson printer connected to the Airport Extreme and they all work without a problem.
Can anyone tell me how to solve my problem with the Windows 2000 machine?
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue; since you did not seem to receive any replies on this forum, am wondering if you resolved the problem; am also wondering if my issue is the distance from my Airport Extreme base to the Windows PC. My next step is going to be to try moving the Apple router closer to the Windows PC and see if that Linksys wireless picks up the signal.

  • Trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion, trouble connecting kodak 3.2 to mac lion

    Hi there,
I'm having trouble connecting a Kodak 3.2 printer to my Mac (Lion OS 10.7.4) - I've tried it on Wifi but no success and the same with usb. The mac is saying Printer not responding.
I've followed troubleshoot on the kodak support site and also done the usual uninstall - reinstall but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

The first question would be if it works while directly plugged in to the machine rather than on Wifi.

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

Because your printer is still relatively new you have the option to download and install the HP Full Feature Software and Drivers. I will walk you through the install process below.
Please click here to download the appropriate drivers for your printer
Once the website opens select the Download button
    Allow the download to Run
Follow any onscreen instructions to reinstall your printer
Do not plug in your USB Cable until the installation prompts you to
Once the installation is complete your printer should show in the Devices and Printers folder. Please test your printing function to ensure that your printer is working properly.

  • HT5569 I am having trouble connecting to wifi can you help.

I am having trouble connecting to wifi can you help.

connectng with a pin # will not work with the ipad. you need to find out exactly what the actual wifi password is.
pin and push buttons are used by wifi protected setup. which is an optional feture of WPA
    here are some ideas
go to the routers home page (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254) and see if you can click on "show password"
get the manual out, it should have the default user name and password you may need to access the routers page
if your windows computer connects, then you should be able to right click the wifi connection and click on show password as well. this is somewhere in the properties page of the wifi connection
also with windows its a good idea to click on "save wifi connection to usb drive" this can be used to connect other windows computers and xbox game consoles as well
if your laptop computer is a mac book you can go to the keychain or icloud keycahin and reveal the actual passowrd as well.
look at the actual router it might have directions on a sticker on how to access the routers configuration pages
if you enter the wrong password on the ipad you need to forget the network and try again
