Trouble converting Canon Raw images to DNG

Hello!
I have been using the Adobe DNG converter for a while without any trouble to convert my .CR2 (Canon Raw) files, but today all I'm getting when opening the program is this:
So obviously I can't click on any of the buttons. I had the 8.7.1 version, so I downloaded the 8.7 version and the problem persists. I'm using a PC with Windows 7 if that helps. So far I've tried restarting my computer, uninstalling and re-installing the program (both versions), trying it with Photoshop opened/closed. Nothing works
Do you have any idea what I could do to fix this? Or is there an alternative that I could use to convert .CR2 files to .DNG?
Thank you!

Here is another thread indicating the same problem, and a possible solution:

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for following up.
Slowly I am learning about what is going on with my problem. I need to first further clarify my problem for you. I am new to both my iMac and its Version 10 of Photoshop. When I bought the CD set I thought that the term "premiere" referred to both Adobe Photoshop (stills) and Premiere (movies). Now I understand that it only refers to the movies. So, my problem rests with Photoshop. As just mentioned have just acquired my iMac and it does not seem to have a screen shot application. However, would you please take a look at the Tools panel in Photoshop? The icons for the brush tool, the eraser tool, and the smart brush tool all have a tiny black triangle in the lower right corner of the icon. It is my understanding that when I click on the eraser tool and should see three more icons pop up. They do not. So what is wrong? That is the source of my frustration with the product. I can't duplicate some of the instructions that I see in my book.
Again, thank you for your follow up.

I'm having troubles converting my raw files from Nikon D5200 (NEF) to DNG. I tried using Lightroom 4, but it didn't identify the folder containing the files. So i downloaded the latest DNG converter but that too didn't identify the files kept in the folder location. So I downloaded DNG converter v7.3 for D5200. It identifies the folder and files; but it is giving me parsing error on trying to convert files. I'm running Windows Vista Home Edition SP1. Kindly advise. Thank you.

I probably missed this detail in what you’ve posted, but do you see the thumbnails of the three cameras’ raw files in Finder if you don’t convert to DNG?
What has happened in the past is that the Apple raw interpreter doesn’t read thumbnails of DNGs it doesn’t like, where at least one thing it didn’t used to like was embedded lens corrections for mirrorless cameras.  Are the Olympus and Panasonic mirrorless—meaning there is no optical viewfinder and everything is seen on an LCD screen or perhaps an electronic view finder?  If so the reason these are different is that the camera is doing the lens distortion corrections automatically and this information is stored in the raw files and in the DNGs but Apple doesn’t know how to use these embedded lens corrections or doesn’t know how to read the newer DNG spec that does allow for this information to be embedded in the DNG, at least.
Apple could just extract the embedded jpg preview and ignore the other parts of the file it doesn’t understand, but it apparently doesn’t do this.
What I’m not sure about is if the Apple raw interpreter still has this problem or if you’re on an older system without the latest updates for camera raw decoding by Apple.

  • Elements 11 will not convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif.

Dowmnloaded Elements 11 thinking it would convert Canon Raw-2 files to tif, but it will not why?

Can you open the raw files in the editor ? If yes, simply save your opened file from the editor in whatever format you want. The import dialog in ACR (Adobe raw converter) is only for the in-memory conversion to the Adobe image format; you have to save to the desired file format from the editor.

HHi Barbara, thanks for replying to my post.
No there's nothing wrong with the Jpegs, but I want to srart uploading images for sale in Alamy, but they say they must be a minimum of 17mb un compressed. Does that mean that at 6mb compressed from 90mb they'd be acceptable?

  • TIFFs turn into Canon Raw images

Why does iPhoto call my .tif files Canon Raw images? They are scanned images I edited in Photoshop CS3. I did set dates in iPhoto, having checked "Modify original files", but that's the only thing I did.
Edit: now that I checked, I also discovered that the files shrunk to about 10% of the original file size. Why? I don't want my photos converted to lossy formats without being asked.

Others are having problems with iPhoto changing tiffs to jpgs after date change and editing. See the thread "Adjust Date and Time..." will convert your TIFFs to JPGs!!!. I was not able to duplicate that issue. I also did essentially the same as you did and did not experience your problem.
Were the extensions on those files changed to .cr2 or another Canon raw extension?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Why is it so difficult to convert a Raw image to a jpeg in Photoshop Elements ?! I have version 12. Once i realized to change the tick box in Camera Raw to 8 bit instead of 16 bit and Flatten image ( sometimes can flatten image if the flatten option isn't greyed out) hey presto i thought i was up and running. However after saving the photograph as a jpeg and renaming it e, after the word edit. I switched off/on my computer only for all the images i had spent time working on to have disappeared. Feeling very upset as there is no Technical Help to telephone at adobe and i don't know what to do.

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

    this occured 4 times now.
When double clicking a Canon Raw Image (.cr2 file) Camera Raw 8.6 opens.
Now i can adjust the pic - and/or can open it into Photoshop
worked fine so far....but not always since the update
If i do so, sometime the pic will be opened like this
is here a photoshop pro aware of this error?
So far i did NOT reinstall Photoshop.
Its the only application i use (and PTGui sometimes)
    happens since the last updates
The only thing i did is: also using (at this time only installed) Lighroom. Have to look how it works first
    Ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks
    Frank

I have made a few more observations.
I can actually open Camera Raw if I click the "Open in Camera Raw..." icon i Bridge.
In Camera Raw I can save files as .psd for example, and also open them in Photoshop. I still get the error when I try to open Camera Raw settings.

  • Photoshop Elements 7 Canon RAW image

I just purchased and loaded Elements 7, because I couldn't use Elements 5 to read Canon RAW (.CR2) images. I was told that Elements 7 would read Canon RAW files.
I get the same error message when I try to load a Canon RAW image. Message is "Cannot open Canon IMG_001.CR2 because it is the wrong type of fie". The file format type, .CR2, is not even listed as an option. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. Camera is Canon 50D.
What do I do? If Elements 7 won't read Canon RAW, then I guess I need to return it.
    Thanks,
    Howard

    Howard,
You may have been given misleading information -- PSE 5 should indeed read Canon 50D raw files. According to this Adobe tech note, PSE 5 supports Adobe Camera Raw 4.6:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407110
and according to the ACR 4.6 download page, it supports the Canon 50D:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4036
So if you really didn't want to spend the money for upgrading, you could return PSE 7.
If you want to keep PSE 7, then that error message indicates that either you have the wrong version of ACR installed or it is installed incorrectly. The Adobe tech note above walks you through how to fix it.

  • Converting Canon .CR2 files to .dng

I have what appears to be the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter (8.6.0.254); but when I direct it to a folder containing .CR2 files from my Canon PowerShot G7X camera, it tells me "No items match your search" and does no conversion. How can I convert this type of RAW file to .DNG?

I don't understand your question. Here is what I do in the Digital Negative Converter:
    - Step 1 is "Select the images to convert"; I click on "Select folder" and navigate to the folder containing a .CR2 file
    - in that window, I see "No items match your search." even though it contains a .CR2 file from my Canon camera. Whether I then click on Select or Cancel makes no difference, since the program does not recognize any files.
    - If despite that, I click on Convert, I receive an error message "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."
In other words, .CR2 raw files are not being recognized by the latest released production version of the converter.

  • Canon RAW files or DNG

Is it safe to assume that the .CR2 Canon RAW format will be around for a while or should I look at converting to DNG format? If the latter, I wonder when Aperture will be able to read DNG files?
Is there a way of converting all my .CR2 files that currently reside in my Aperture library to DNG format?
    Many thanks
    Mark

CR2 Canon RAW is a safe format. Millions of pix exist on it and it is unlikely to be dropped from support by major apps witnout upgrade conversion being made available.
Vendors like Nikon and Canon have been supporting their products for many more decades than Adobe has existed.
Camera vendors keep RAW image info proprietary and constantly evolving for improved image quality. DNG is Adobe's attempt at genericizing RAW capture but who says Adobe's conversion is in any way preferable? Each camera is somewhat different, but in general Aperture does a better job than Adobe ACR (the underlying converter for DNG), and often the individual camera vendors' RAW converters are better still.
DNG is only really useful for folks with brand new camera releases supported by Adobe but as yet unsupported by Aperture, and even then only if for some reason the camera vendor's free RAW converter is lame.
If the latter, I wonder when Aperture will be able to read DNG files?
    Aperture reads DNG now.
Is there a way of converting all my .CR2 files that currently reside in my Aperture library to DNG format?
Sure, using Adobe Camera RAW (ACR), a subset of Photoshop. But unless ACR does a better job on your camera's files than both Canon and Aperture, which is highly unlikely, doing so IMO would at best be a waste of time, at worst lead to lowered image quality.
    Edit:
The quality of RAW conversion in addition to being specific to each DSLR also is a matter of opinion subject to individual brain/eyeball evaluation.

  • Help converting a raw image to JPG at 300dpi

Please help I have always used PS to edit my raw images. I am now using elements. I noticed that when I converted all my DNG files to JPS it saved them at 240 dpi is there anyway to change them?

You can use Process Multiple Files to change the resolution on a folder full of images.
    1. File > Process Multiple Files
    2. Select your Source folder (select a different location if you don't want to overwrite your originals, otherwise just click the Same as Source option).
    3. Check the "Resize Images" box under Image Size.
    4. Leave Width and Height blank and select 300 from the Resolution drop-down.
    5. Leave all other options blank and click OK.

  • Canon RAW images displaying color borders at contrast edges

I noticed annoying color borders in RAW images taken from my Canon PowerShot S120. They look like the color planes are misaligned. Around high contrast areas (between light and dark grey) I can notice magenta borders in one direction and cyan borders in the opposite direction, both approximately 5 pixels wide.
I record and store images as RAW+JPEG pairs. In Aperture I set RAW as master.
In the original JPEG of the image pair from the camera this error is absent, the color is neutral on both contrast edges.
The error in the RAW image can also be seen when the file is opened directly in Preview or if the RAW image is exported to a TIFF using Aperture and then opened with Preview.
I compared this to older RAW+JPEG image pairs I took with the previous model, a Canon PowerShot S90. There I see yellow and blue borders in opposite directions in Aperture or Preview, also approximately 5 pixels wide. In the camera's original JPEG image from the image pair this is still a bit visible, but far less pronounced.
My oldest RAW images taken with a Nikon E8800 (.NEF) don't show such artifacts when viewed in Aperture.
Since the JPEG from the pair does not have these artefacts my guess is that the RAW converter is not optimal or some metadata in the Canon RAW files (.CR2) is either missing (worst case) or not used correctly.
My hope is that I just have to adjust some presets to correct this. Else it is probably up to Canon or Apple.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue (without going through the individual files, if possible)?

    Hi Keith
    Thanks for the infos.
    Just to clarify:
I didn't ask for RAW, I just use raw formats because there's curretly no better alternative. I would like to see what came into the lens - like an ideal hole camera . Ordinary JPEG is way too limited (8bit resolution per color channel plus really ugly compression artefacts).
For archiving I would much prefer the JPEG2000 format with lossless encoding and as many bits per pixel as the camera's analog to digital converters provide, linearly encoded (above the noise background but including one bit of noise, to be precise). But, alas, when I did my last experiments (Snow Leopard) the image framework in Mac OS X did still not support more than 8bit resolution per color channel in JPEG2000.
One good thing about raw formats is that the corrections could actually be better than what is always done by the camera's firmware for JPEG or standard TIFF at the time of the shot. Another good thing is that various sensor and color patterns can be handled directly.
If Canon can do it in DPP, then I strongly hope they will also provide a better converter for Mac OS X. On some pictures this aberrations are really obvious and irritating.
