Trouble converting Word 2003 document

I must be doing something wrong.  It seemed simple enough to convert a simple Word 2003 document to PDF.  When I go to open the PDF file in Word, up pops a window "select the encoding that makes your document readable: (choices are) windows (default), MS-DOS, other encoding [lists several languages and alphabets).  I select "windows", and all I get is gobbledy-****.
When I email myself the PDF file

I'm sorry you're having trouble... can you kindly respond and provide as many details as possible about what you're trying to accomplish, and where exactly you are running into trouble? Do you have an Acrobat.com account? By "downloaded the Adobe" do you mean you've downloaded the desktop version of Acrobat?
Thank you,
Michelle

  • Can't convert Word 2003 documents to PDF

I purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro and it will not convert any of my Word documents (.doc Word 2003). I get an error message saying "Attempt failed. Please correct the error and try again." there is no description as to what the error is, or how I might proceed to fix it. Can anybody help?

Are you trying to convert documents from Word PDFMaker or Opening Acrobat and then converting it ?
Is your Acrobat up to Date ?

  • Problem converting Word 2003 document to PDF using Acrobat 8

I have tried without success to generate a PDF from a Word document that is 191 pages long and contains many hyperlinks.
Although I have generated similar PDF documents in the past using the Acrobat PDFMaker macro button within Word (which preserves all the links, unlike printing to PDF), the one I am currently working on does not generate a PDF document.
It appears to follow the normal process of searching for hyperlinks, converting to PDF, etc - which takes close to 35-40 minutes, but once it looks to be done, it shows a brief Adobe splash screen and disappears entirely.
I have searched online and through various forums and can't find any explanation.
    I would appreciate any input.
    Thank you!

Try printing a few pages to the Adobe PDF printer to be sure the creation process works. If that works, then go back and empty your TEMP folder, particularly if your 191 pages includes many graphics. You might also want to use the Compress feature in WORD 2003 for graphics to reduce the resolution of all the graphics (it is in the lower left of the first tab of the format menu for WORD graphics).

  • Converting word 2003 document to pdf

I need to convert a word document to pdf to load to the lulu
web site which is a book publishing site. They have specific
settings like embedd fonts but no subset embedding. For images use
zip compression and 300 dpi. I have set all of these in the
distiller and from word I print to Adobe pdf. My file size is 384MB
in word and when converted it is 5876MB
What can I do to decrease the file size? The only fonts being
used are Times New Roman and Arial. When I open the word document
with Adobe Acrobat Professional and save it is considerably
smaller, however I am not sure what settings are being used.
Printing to a printer, I can click the adobe distiller and select
the settings and save with a specific name. I do not know how to
choose particular settings when opening a word document in Adobe
    Acrobat and saving as pdf.
How do I tell what settings in Adobe distiller are creating
the HUGE file size? Thank you.

Trying to convert a Word 2003 document with some graphics.  Conversion process seems to stall mid-point.  Waited 23 minutes and gave up.  Suggestions?  Thanks!
    Susan

    Hi Susan,
    Thank you for your post.
    Please try two things:
    1. Make sure you have the most recent version of the Adobe Flash Player. You can download it here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
    2. Try opening Acrobat.com and running CreatePDF in a different browser to see if that helps.
Let us know how this works for you! (It is certainly possible that the graphics are causing the stall, in which case we'll ask to see the document for further troubleshooting.)

  • Page numbers display as 5 of 1 and 2 of 2121 in a PDF that was created from a Word 2003 document

We merge several Word 2003 documents into 1 larger document that we then convert to PDF.  The page numbers in the Word document display properly - 1 of 21, 2 of 21, 3 of 21, etc.  We then convert that merged document to PDF by right-clicking the filename and choosing "Convert to Adobe PDF".  For those of us with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.1.3, the page numbers in the converted PDF file display as 1 of 1, 2 of 1, ... 21 of 1.  Those with Acrobat Professional 8.1.3, they display as 1 of 21, 2 of 2121, 3 of 212121, etc., each page adding another total number of pages to the total.  There is no change in the result if using v8.0.0 or 8.1.4  Does anyone have any ideas???

Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade to OFFICE 2007, I would not recommend it. I hate it -- have it on two computers. I have had problems creating PDFs reliably from WORD 2007 and PPT 2007, at least with graphics. The conversion seems to want to split graphics up into several parts rather than leave it as one. It does not happen with WORD 2003 and so assume this is some sort of issue with OFFICE 2007. You can get the graphics fine if you use the MS plugin for PDF creation, but then you have to deal with the MS version of a PDF. If you want to try it on one computer in your office, I would do that before you make the change. However, if what you have meets the need, then why change unless there are specific items that you are looking for and don't have.
OK, that is my opinion. I am sure there are counter arguments. If I had the preference on my newer machines, I would have OFFICE 2003. Bill

  • Printing microsoft word 2003 document and pdf created from the document are different

I created a microsoft word 2003 document with jpg pictures and printed it on my HP Inkjet printer. I then created a pdf by saving as a pdf from the microsoft word 2003 document. The settings for images were 300 dpi and zip compression. The pdf file created was ~3 MB whereas the word document was ~250 KB. It looked fine on the screen but when I printed it the jpg pictures from the pdf were very dark and not very desirable. When I printed it on my HP Color laser 2600n printer I couldn't see the difference in the jpg pictures.
I am creating the pdf files to send to the online publisher lulu.com to print. I have used the settings to create the pdf they recommend from their website; however they aren't real clear in the information they give for the recommended settings.
My question is why would the print out be so awful using the HP Color Ink Jet printer since it is very good for printing pictures?

There are many reasons, but most revolve around the color space and coding for the colors. Acrobat uses 8 bit RGB.

  • Acrobat X 10.02 crashes when converting Word 2007 document wiht linked Visio file.

Acrobat X 10.02 crashes when converting Word 2007 document with linked Visio file and causes a C++ runtime error in Word and crashes Word.
To see the behavior create a short Word 2007 document with a linked Visio file (e.g., create a Visio file with one box and text and insert it as a link into a Word docx).
    No problem in Acrobat 9

There may be some of an issue with AA X on this, but part of the blame probably goes to MS also. I would suggest you simply clip the graphic from VISIO as a vector graphic (EMF will be used by default) and not do the link and do not embed the VISIO object. The linking and use of embedded objects in WORD 2007 seems to have been a major problem and is mostly a MS issue.

  • Embedded Excel in Word 2003 document Becomes Corrupt when Saved

We have a Word 2003 document with Embedded Excel sheets in it.  When this document is saved and reopened, you cannot edit the excel tables, you just get the message "document corrupt, no longer available".
Detect and Repair doesn't fix it, it seems to make the excel table a picture or object that cannot be edited.
What is the fix for this?

    Hi
This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
You installed Office XP SP-2 or Office 2000 SP-3.
You are running one of the following Norton AntiVirus or Norton SystemWorks programs:
    Norton AntiVirus 2003
    Norton AntiVirus 2002
    Norton AntiVirus 2001
    Norton AntiVirus 2000
    Norton SystemWorks 2003
    Norton SystemWorks 2002
    Norton SystemWorks 2001
    Norton SystemWorks 2000
Note Norton AntiVirus and Norton SystemWorks are supported by Symantec.

Hi there, I currently subscribe to Adobe Pro Subscription (yearly) and I also subscribe to Adobe PDF pack (monthly).  I only require Adobe to read and create PDF documents such as converting word/excel document or a web based document.  Can someone tell me if I'm doubling up as I'm not sure of the differences between the products and would like to save a few dollars.

Acrobat Pro can do a lot more than the PDF Pack online service.
Try if you can do everything you need with PDF Pack; otherwise keep Acrobat Pro.

  • Extraneous lines added to graphics when converting Word 2003 to Acrobat 7

When I choose to print my Word 2003 document that includes an embedded .tif graphic to "Adobe PDF" in my printer list it successfully creates the .PDF file, but the graphic will consistently have a thin vertical line along its right hand side.
I'm using an IBM PC (.5gb RAM) with Windows XP (SP2), Word 2003 and Adobe 7

I am using Acrobat 8 Professional.  Please Help!  I've spent a long time on this document and upon conversion, it is not working properly.

  • Problem converting word 2010 Document

I am having a problem converting a Word 2010 document using Live
Cycle Designer ES2. I get the following
    error msg:
Word (version XP onwards) could not be found
    Word 2010 is installed.

I have just run into this issue myself.  At first I thought it might be that LiveCycle is not yet fully compatible with Office 2010 but after doing some googling it seems there are plenty of folks out there successfully converting Word 2010 documents to PDF.
As a temporary workaround, you could try a copy of an earlier version of Word should one be available to you.
If I'm able to find a solution to the issue, I'll let you know promptly.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro - Problems converting word 2003 to pdf

When I print word to pdf, the resulting pdf document has missing text and paragraphs.  The only way I seem to be able to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall the original software.  It is driving me mad.  I have done this about 20 times now.
    Can any one PLEASE help.

    Hi there
It doesn't seem to matter how I do it, whether it is creating pdf by file print method or convert to pdf.
It also happens when I print as pdf through MYOB.
Windows XP Professional with SP3, Word 2003 with SP3 as part of Microsoft Office Pro 2003 and Acrobat 9.0 Pro Extended - Version 9.4.5.236.
Am getting pretty desperate.  Would really appreciated your help.
I have attached a page for your reference.  All the coloured rectangles should contain text as per the first.
    Kind regards

  • Missing text in list items when coverting an MS Word 2003 Document

When converting a document from MS Word (2003) to PDF, (using Acrobat 9 Pro.) text is missing from either an ordered or unordered list when the text is within a list item and spans across to a second page.
This symptom is present when using the following methods of creating a PDF.
    ·         In windows explorer, right click and convert to PDF
    ·         Using the Convert to PDF button in the MS Word 2003 tool bar
    ·         Using the Convert to PDF in the File Menu of MS Word 2003
The only workaround seems to be:
    ·         Click File
    ·         Click Print
    ·         Select PDF from the list
    ·         Print
I can't seem to find any updates or fixes either from MS or Adobe that addresses this issue. This issue is present on 5 computers, has anyone had this problem and found a solution o_0

With WORD 2003, set the printer to the Adobe PDF printer and then go back through the document to check for the layout and such. Then print (or use PDF Maker). The other option is to go into the WORD Options, way down in a list of compatibility settings, and turn off use printer metrics. I think either of these will solve your problem.
