Trouble deleting ".lock" file to open catalog

I have been unable to open my Lightroom 4 catalog since a recent crash. I get the error message that it cannot be opened because another application already has it opened. I tried deleting the .lock file as suggested elsewhere on this forum. When I delete the .lock file, it vanishes for a second and then immediately pops back up, and I still cannot open the catalog. The catalog is on an external hard drive. Any advice?
Thank you!

That's really strange. Lightroom creates that file when it starts to run, and deletes it when it exits. That's the only program on your system that will create a lock file.
OK. Try this. Move your catalogue to a different folder.that doesn't have a lock file. Also move your previews to the new folder. Now double-click on the catalogue in that folder. Lightroom should come up normally (and create a new .lock file in that folder).

• Deleting locked file on desktop

Greetings-
This is more a software question. I transferred QuickBook files from a PC to my Mac. I can run QB for Mac easily, but the transfer left a locked .qbw file on my desktop. I think this is a QB backup for Windows file. I am trying to delete it but can't because it is locked. I tried to delete from within QB, but can't. It is no big deal, but I would love to get it off my Desktop. Any ideas? I tried to contact Intuit, but they require an Intuit ID which I don't have. Thanks.

Ok Ed Colman lets try this:
deleting locked files
1. Open Terminal. It's located in your /Applications/Utilities.
Paste the following command:
*chflags -R nouchg*
Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.
2. Drag the files from the desktop to the Terminal window.
Note: This automatically enters the pathname for file/folder.
3. Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.
This should unlock hidden flags in directory and subdirectories /file that you can not get to.
4. Exit to terminate terminal session then quit as normal.
5.Delete rouge file as normal, empty trash or secure empty trash.

• Lightroom 4.4 will not open despite deleting .lock file

I have deleted the .lock files already but am still getting "light room cannot be opened because another application has it opened" Help!! I read on the forum to delete the .lock file but nothing seems to be working.

Have you used your system search feature to search your computer for such files. I know from past experience that it's easy to overlook files if you are trying to do it manually. It seems to me that there has to be one in the folder with your main catalog that you have been using. Do you know the location of that catalog?

• Time Capsule won't allow me to delete locked files

I have transferred old files from my external hard drive (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) to my Time Capsule.
However, when I tried to delete those files via "move to Trash", some folders cannot be deleted due to the error below:
The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items.
I checked the folder and some of the files are LOCKED. However, when I try "Get Info", the Lock checkbox is disabled.
Some things to take note:
I did not change user account
I am using Mountain Lion OS
I am using Time Capsule as my wifi router
I am too scared to use the Terminal but I reckon that is the only way how. I tried to google how to do it but I haven't seen any clear instructions on my specific problem. I tried to go to the Time Capsule path but Terminal says "the path does not exist".
Kindly help!
Thanks in advance.

you could try this:
go system preferences > time machine and turn TM off. click on +change disk+ and select none.
next, delete this file <MacintoshHD>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
restart your machine, go system preferences > time machine and turn TM back on. click on +change disk+, re-select your backup volume and click +use for backups+.

• Trouble deleting PDF files

I purchased Acrobat X1 Standard recently which worked perfectly. Then I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 recently. Not sure if Op-System caused problem, but now.... when I try to delete a PDF file, dialog box says 'file is open in another program" and I have to click 'try again' 5-6 times in order to delete a file. The file is not open in another program that I can see. Help!!!

In some cases, Acrobat has not been completely closed and is still registering the file. Not sure if this is a fault of Acrobat or the OS, but if it was not happening in the Win8, then it sounds that at least the OS has created a problem.

• How to delete locked files on flash memory stick

Several files on my memory stick have somehow become locked and cannot be deleted. When I unlock them in their Info window and then close the window, they revert to locked status. How can I delete these files?
iBook Mac OS X (10.3.9)

When I unlock them in their Info window and then close the window, they revert to locked status.
This suggests that the items have the schg flag set; it is possible to turn the flag off, but if there's little or nothing else you want on the drive, you're better off by copying the remaining items if any to your hard disk and then reformatting the flash drive in the Disk Utility, which is in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. If you still want to clear the flag, follow the instructions for your version of Mac OS X on this page.

• Problem deleting locked files copied to my Time Capsule

I'm having difficulty deleting some locked files buried in nested directories that I copied to my Time Capsule. The usual procedure for recursively unlocking them using Get Info on the parent directory doesn't work because the lock icon in the bottom right corner of the get info window is absent regardless of whether I login as an admin or as root. After a couple of discussions with Apple Upper Level support, my options are to individually unlock each file (which will take forever with 350+ GB) or to reformat the disk and thereby lose the sparse bundle backups for my two Macs which I want to avoid. I can always write off those 350 GB and live with the remaining space, but I know there must be another way. Anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering if its possible to login as root and use a terminal window to mount the Time Capsule partition, change to the parent directories and recursively change the file permissions (chmod 777), and then recursively delete the files (rm -r). Apple support couldn't help me with this and it's been awhile since I've used unix, but if I can get a little help, I think this should work. Worse case scenario I end up reformatting the disk and lose my backups, assuming I don't blow away any files required to erase and reformat the disk. Any unix gurus out there that can help an old dweeb find his way? Thanks.

Thanks for the windows suggestion. I may be able to scare up an old Windows XP laptop but I'm not sure how I would connect the TC to it. Will windows recognize the TC via an Ethernet connection? Also, I think windows may be the original culprit as I ran across an old post with a similar issue:
"I copied folders + files from an old PC external hard drive onto my Time Capsule and now want to delete them (send them to the trash can). The files have been deleted but the empty folders remain with the following message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Time Capsule does not show up on Disk Utility. There is only one user id on my computer (that's me) with read write & access. Get Info on the undeletable Folders does not indicate that they are locked. I suspect it may have something to do with legacy permissions from the old PC but Apple tells me these should be reset when the files are copied across."
I see the same error message and I'm certain there are lots of windows files buried in my directories.

• Having trouble deleting movie files from itunes

I'm curious as to how I delete movies from itunes. I imported these clips of a movie into itunes and would now like to remove them but i can't seem to do that. I tried deleting the files off my hard drive. itunes recognizes that i deleted them but they still appear in the Video menu of itunes. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi, you can delete movies or music tracks from iTunes by selecting the file in the iTunes library and pressing delete, and then clicking the "Move to Trash" button in the confirmation box that pops up.

• How to delete locked files on pen drive

I have a pen drive which has 2 partitions and there is no problem with one partition. Other partition shows itself as "CDROM" and none of the files in that partition could be deleted. There is no option to format the entire pen drive also. Even if I format it, the "CDROM' partition still remains.

Hi Scott,
2 ways to go...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the Erase tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

• Cannot delete a file or open it from desktop

Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I have not been able to find a good solution. When I try to delete a specific .aif file from my desktop, I get the following message:
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8072).
When I click 'get info' to possibly edit the permissions on it so I can delete it, I am unable to edit anything in the info pane. Under the Sharing & Permissions tab, it reads "You have unknown access." When I try to open the .aif file in iTunes, I get the following message:
The Application "iTunes" can't be opened.
-108
However, iTunes works perfectly for me for all other compatible filetypes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Jacob

Restart with the Option key held down and run repair disk from the recovery partition.

• Deleted RAW file after "Open with External Editor"

I opened a file in PS using the "Open with External Editor" command and saved and it saved the update in Aperture but I needed to make anothe change so I did the same as before using the "Open with External Editor" command. Aperture created another "version" so I attempted to delete the version and it deleted all the versions as well as the "Master" RAW file. I went into my trash to find the RAW file and PS file that I wanted to keep but the RAW file was not there. I don't understand why it would put the PS file in the trash but the RAW file is nowhere to be found. Is there another place that it would go?
Dual 2.7 G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 5GB RAM

If the master was inside the Library then after deleting it, should be in the Trash, inside a folder called Aperture.
If it was a referenced master it should be still in the location it was unless you ticked the box 'send master to trash', in that case it'll be the same as if it was inside the Library.

• Delete locked file from /Applications folder

Hi there
I used Clean My Mac to remove a file install - something I have done many times without any problems.
This time though the application file was left behind in the /Applications folder and I am unable to move it to the Trash because it is locked.
I have tried the following
sudo chflags nouchg /Applications/CrashPlan.app
This however does not resolve the issue and I am still unable to move the file to Trash - it does not remove the locked flag
Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions how to remove the file?

Hi WIlliam
I tried what you said but I get an unexpected result...
Johns-Mac-Pro:~ John$ sudo rm -r /Applications/CrashPlan.app
Password:
rm: /Applications/CrashPlan.app/Contents: Operation not permitted
override rwxrwxr-x root/admin schg for /Applications/CrashPlan.app?
I'm not sure how to respond to the question it is asking. I tried keying in Y but the response was
override rwxrwxr-x root/admin schg for /Applications/CrashPlan.app? y
rm: /Applications/CrashPlan.app: Operation not permitted
Johns-Mac-Pro:~ John$

• How to delete locked files on Preview app?

when i right click on the preview app on my dock, a list of files i have previewed appears. how do i delete the list so there is nothing there?

Hi Melissa! A step by step instruction:
I suppose you are not sure about Terminal. (Would be easier to explain).
1. Go into the Finder (click the desktop).
2. Click on top on the "Go" Menu and click the ALT key. Go into Library
3. Then from Library to Preferences
4. Search in this Folder for "Preview". If there are too many files, you have searched "This Mac". So click on the "Preferences" on top of the window frame, too search this folder only.
5. Remove the items:
a) com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
b) com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile
c) com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList
d) com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist.lockfile
6. Restart your computer
