Trouble erasing DVD+RW

Has anyone else had trouble erasing DVD+RW media (or any rewritable media for that matter)? I have been trying to recycle a disk that I used to store iPhoto pics on but Disk Utility would not erase it. It pretended to do so then when I re-inserted the disk it still had all of the original data on it. I tried Quick Erase as well as Full Erase with the same results. I then tried erasing a CD-RW and ran into the same problem. Nearly exasperated I tried it with the CD-RW again and it worked. I backed up some iPhoto pics to the CD-RW then I figured I would try the DVD+RW again. Miraculously it worked this time.
Does anyone have a clue as to what might be happening?

  • Optical drive no longer mounts blanks after erasing dvd-rw

hi, hopefully someone can help with this -
new macbook pro (couple months old)
i've used the optical drive twice, to burn onto a couple maxell dvd+rw discs - this worked fine.
today, i put one of the discs i'd previously used in, hit "erase" in disk utility ...
since then, the drive won't mount or recognize any blank media ... (the drive just hums for a bit, then nothing)
i tried the erased DVD-RW disc in another mac, it mounted fine - so the problem's not the discs ....
the optical drive seems to mount old data DVD-R's, authored DVDs, and CD's just fine ... but it now won't mount any blank media at all (whether CD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-R)
weird - it's like erasing a DVD+RW has somehow wiped the drive's ability to mount fresh, blank discs...
is it possible the erase operation busted something in the drive ... maybe that kind of operation uses part of the hardware mechanism that only affects the reading of blank media ? or could this be a software problem?
i tried resetting pram and repairing perms, this had no effect.
here's the spec of the optical drive :
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875:
    Firmware Revision: DA09
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB

    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

ok, just to add to this -
i made a small install of OSX.5.2 (from the MBP install disc) on a FW drive, and booted from that - and lo and behold, blank media is recognized ...
... so this points to a software problem ...

  • Optical Drive is Reading CDs and DVDs & Writing CDs but not Writing and Erasing DVDs!

Product Name & Number: Compaq Presario CQ60-101AU

    Description:
When reading and writing CD+R, everything works perfect. And Reading DVD also working perfect. The problem is while Writing DVD+R, DVD+RW and Erasing DVD+RW. When using burning software or the windows in-built burning, at the end it shows reading error. And While erasing also same problem. In the DVD, there are only some dark circles/lines with gap and doesn't look like normal written DVDs.
Steps tried out (but in vain)
    1. Used different burners
    2. Used Superblank
    3. Uninstalled and Reinstalled Chipset drivers
    4. Formatted the whole HDD and Reinstalled OS
Please Help! Actually where is the problem? And how to fix it?

Same for the NVIDIA driver, Notebook Review is up to date or you cab go directly to NVIDIA.

If you have an upgrade disc, then you can do a clean install as long as there is a Windows OS on the drive.
I have also done a clean install form an upgrade disc to on a new drive and it still works.
Glad the MoBo's doing well !    What kills them is if you do allot of gaming, the MoBo can't take the heat. The cooling system just isn't up to the task.

  • Can't erase DVD-RW anymore

My MBP is refusing to erase DVD-RW discs anymore. I'm running 10.5.2 and it last worked (on this specific disc) under 10.5.1.
I've tried erasing a couple of discs, using both Disk Utility (quick and complete) and Disco. It appears to work properly, but it never finishes and comes up with the "You've inserted a blank disc" anymore. And when I go to the finder and click back on the disc, the original files are still there. I've also tried it before and after a full reboot with no joy.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried Toast? I use it regularly to transfer files to and from work. I rarely have problems erasing a DVD-RW. I have Toast 8. Go to the Recorder menu in the application, insert the disk you want to erase and then select Erase after the disk mounts. If you pick "Quick Erase" you must use Toast to burn the data for the next use.

  • Trouble burning dvd...message: playback may be disabled

i'm having trouble burning dvd through  - share - then checking blue ray box and burning it as AVCHD. i've done it before by following these same steps but this time the dvd player gives me the the playback mabe be disabled message, any suggestions...

no, i'm not trying to burn a blue-ray disc, it's just a box in a burn window that you check even when you're burning regular dvd, so it'll come out as avchd. anyway for some reason i can't get it to work.

  • How to erase DVD-Ram disk

I have a half dozen DVD-Ram disks (from my now-dead DVR). They mount on the Desktop and I can see the contents (VRO and associated files). I am exploring the various Toast, Streamclip (etc.) options to play/rescue the files. Once that is done, how can I erase (and rewrite/reuse) the disks? Neither Toast 8 nor Disk Utility seem happy with formatting/erasing this media. Any ideas?

Ah,... makes sense. Thanks! And here's what it says [below].
So, it seems to say I cannot "erase" ... but I can "overwrite" (??), which is splitting a hair finer would have occurred to me.
Okay. Then, how would I "overwrite" the files -- what application could I use to do this? Toast? Other??

  • Trouble Authoring DVD

Hi, I am trying to author a DVD using Encore but whenever I go to Build DVD > Disc > Build and then attempt to actually build the disc, the program has trouble importing one of my video files. All of the settings are default but when I press "Build" it runs through as if it were encoding/transcoding the disc but then it always fails. It happens with one particular file (an avi file) that is part of my dvd. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to solve the problem (or suggestions as to what the problem could be)?
I have gotten an error message once, but I'm not really sure how it relates.
"Menu Photoshop file changed outside of this application. Do you wish to reload the image from the Photoshop file? (any unsaved changes will be lost)"
    Thanks for any help.

    What type of detailed information?
I'm unsure of what exactly to tell you, but if you could be a little more specific I will pass on as much as possible.
It is an avi file about 1.1 GB in size and running for 16 minutes, I made it using footage compiled from DV Tapes that I then edited and created as an avi file using Premiere Pro.
It is the first file that the program attempts to transcode after I have hit "Build", so I am not sure whether there is anything particuliarly problematic about this file, or whether it is a problem with my Encore software.
There is one more video file which composes the DVD, and it is roughly 26 minutes in length and 6.13 GB in size. Each of the two video files have chapters added to them by me, and each of these chapters is linked to menus which I created using Photoshop (in conjunction with an existing template from Encore).
If there are any ways in which I can be more specific to better help you to help me, please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Having trouble making DVD

I made this great movie in Imovie. It was made of photos and video run together of a trip I took recently. I had trouble figuring out how to make a DVD of the project. Finally I imported it to IDVD. The photos and music came through but the video that was in Imovie did not. Is there and easier way to burn the project to DVD?

The prescribed method for producing DVD's from imovie projects is to export them to the media browser and then open them by clicking on the media button in iDVD.
You may however be experiencing other issues and it may be that the source video you imported into imovie may be incompatible with imovie. What was the compression type of the video files you have used?

  • Can't erase DVD+RW disc

I've used this disc a couple of times now to copy movies for viewing on a TV and it's worked just fine.
After I have watched the DVD I then erase it and copy another movie to it but this time it won't let me erase.
If I check out Info. for the Ownerships & Permissions it say "You can only read"
Any idea why it is doing this ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I was trying to create a multi-session DVD-RW, the same way you can with a CD-RW. Though you can erase and reuse the DVD-RW, you can't create a multi-session DVD-RW using MacOS X.
I came across a few tech articles explaining how to work around this using console commands, but I'm not that brave.

  • Trouble with DVD-R recovery discs

Hello, It's only now that I saw that DVD+R is suggested for burning the recovery disc set. A bit too late for me, since I bought several DVD-R to produce my set. Here's what happened: Each disc was created with difficulty; the burning process failed on every other try. But in the end, I finally got the 4 DVD-R's that the program said were burned and verified correctly. Now, when I tried inserting each disc to make sure the notebook was able to read them correctly (the contents were supposedly verified, after all), to my horror I saw that the first two discs were not being recognized. However, my patience was rewarded when after a long time, suddenly an Explorer window pops up showing the contents of the disc. Taking advantage of the situation, I immediately copied these contents in a folder in the desktop. It took me long to do this process for the contents of the first two discs that were having trouble being recognized. Later on I also copied the contents of discs 3 and 4, which was a lot quicker. Now, I have four folders in the desktop with the contents of the corresponding recovery discs. The question is: could I use these contents and burn them onto DVD+R's this time, so as to have a working set of recovery discs? Thank you very much.
    This question was solved.

    Hi @anthony_s
    Thank you for your query.
I understand that you created your recovery disk on the incorrect type of DVD and the do not work.  You have copied the contents to folders on you desktop and would like to know if you can now create new recovery DVDs on the correct type from the folders.
No that will not work.  I suggest you contact HP support and advise them of the events and inquire about obtaining a recovery kit.

  • Troubles burning dvd ?

    Hi,
I just reinstalled Arch after I accidentally broke my pacman database, and I have some troubles with burning dvd : neither graveman nor growisofs in console works. As soon as I launch the burning I get an error (input/output error). What's very strange is I succeeded two times in burning, but it's not reproductible (I tried something like fifty times).
So if someone has the same problem and/or knows a way to get it back to work, your post is welcome
    Thanks for helping.
