Trouble Exporting to 16:9 with Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion

I have created a 5 minute movie using shots taken from my Sony HDR-FX1. The shots were native 16:9. They imported fine into FCEHD. While editing in FCEHD, the clips all displayed in the viewer as 16:9. When I exported to Quicktime Movie, the resulting product was 16:9. When I exported using Quicktime Conversion, my product became 4:3.
Having read other posts here, I looked closely at all clips (which were all checked as Anamorphic), and my Sequence (which was not checked Anamorphic -- but was instead HD1440x1080). I then created a new sequence, which was checked as Anamorphic, copied my clips to it, then exported it. It got worse. Now, it exports 4:3 using both Quicktime Movie and Quicktime Conversion.
I then created a new project, created a new sequence set to Anamorphic, then copied one clip into it from my earlier project and exported it -- same result. I then imported a clip into this new project from the original files from my camera and exported -- same result.
One final note, when looking at the Frame Size in the properties of my sequence and clips, it is set to 720x480. And, when I look at the Get Info on the exported files of the original, I see 1920x1080 (Quicktime Movie export) and 1440x1080 (Quicktime Conversion export) before I created the new sequence; then 720x480 in both after I created the new sequence.
Any help you can provide would be incredibly appreciated!
Dan

You are right. My original sequence was marked as HD. When I exported that one to Quicktime Movie, it displayed 16:9.
Then, I created a new sequence that was 720x480 and checked as anamorphic. That one, exported with Quicktime Movie and/or Quicktime Conversion was 720x480 and was squeezed into 4:3 rather than displaying in Quicktime as 16:9.
Last night, I burned this to DVD using iMovie and it displayed properly on my 16:9 television. But, alas, it is squeezed on my 4:3 television (rather than letterboxed).
Also, I exported to Quicktime Conversion and used "custom size" of 720x405 and achieved a movie that will play in Quicktime as near 16:9 so I can put it up on the web in the right dimensions.
Is there a better/easier way to export footage shot 16:9, edited 16:9 so that it automatically exports 16:9 for use in Quicktime and/or on a DVD?

  • Unable to play HD quicktime movie in Quicktime. please help!

I have exported a sequence from my HD project in FCP as a quicktime movie. when i play try to play it on my laptop, however, it opens but doesn't play. instead, a dialogue window opens requesting me to download third party components. if i decline, then the playhead plays in the quicktime window but no video appears. please let me know what, if any components i need to download. an help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

You exported from FCP using codecs only available to that app.
Export using the H.264 video codec to view the file (in HD dimensions) on any (supported by hardware and CPU) computer with QuickTime version 7 installed.

  • ITunes and Quicktime - Movie requires Quicktime which is not supported

    Ok.
Issue is:  Movies and TV shows bought thru iTunes (10.5.1) on Lion (10.7.2) generate an error at time of playback.  Error is 'This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."
Help documents state to switch to 32 bit mode (which works).
    Here's what I've found out:
Called Apple, couldn't figure out what the issue is.  Did the standard system/disk checks/repairs/permission repairs to no avail.  Created a new user to download the video to try and play it.. The user was able to stream the video correctly.
I can play the videos IF I access them directly with QuickTime (and it doesn't need the 32 bit flag checked).  So, I copied my library files for iTunes over to the new account and tried again (before doing a file by file comparison of both user accounts) to see if maybe the size of the library I have might be an issue.
Logged into the other account and it now had the issue playing the TV show.
But, I don't consider that a valid test because I should have copied the file into it's existing library before replacing it to check and see if there's an issue with the file in iTune.
which led me to an interesting solution.. If I find the file on the drive (my Library files and all videos are on a NAS server, btw) in Finder then tell iTunes to remove the video from iTunes but not delete the file, I can drag and drop the file back into iTunes and it plays fine.
So, no need to switch to 32 bit mode, just have to delete the video from iTunes (but not the drive) then drag and drop it back into iTunes.
It sounds like, for some systems, something isn't being toggled in the iTunes library or the File when it's added to iTunes via the downloader that allows iTunes to recognize the type of playback version required.  By deleting the reference in the library then manually adding it back in, the issue is bypassed and the videos are playable again.
    I have a headache now...  ;D

Try reinstalling QuickTime Player, You can download it directly from Apple here -> http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
If that doesn't work, try reinstalling iTunes which should also reinstall QuickTime Player.

  • What happens to quicktime movie if quicktime not on computer

if your web has a QuickTime movie, but the person viewing it does not have quicktime on their computer, what happens? Does it automatically provide them a link to download quicktime?

    Yes.

  • To export as Quicktime movie or QT conversion??

OK As I read through the search results I am seeing advice to use one or the other. When should you use which? Sara

QT movie is quick and an exact copy of your timeline. This is handy for going to compressor or DVDsp.
Conversion is if you need to deliver a specific file type or more generally viewable and usually smaller format. This usually compresses the file causing resolution loss and can take a long time.
This is a very quick overview of export options. Please do more research as every one has an opinion on this topic and file compression is part science and part alchemy.

  • Quicktime movie or Quicktime conversion?

I shoot a wedding, everything is edited using final cut pro 7, I want avoid using compressor, Should I use Qucik time movie or should I use Quicktime conversion,,, I want to burn on a DVD, video was shoot at 1080p 3ofps... Please help

Sorry, if you want to make a DVD, Compressor is your best bet.  I mean, you CAN skip it, and take the export directly into DVD Studio Pro to author the DVD...but Compressor will do a much better job.
Anyway...here's a down and dirty way to author a DVD:
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing.  Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps.  Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Make a Reference Quicktime Movie using QuickTime API for windows?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know how to generate or modify a QuickTime Reference file?
I try to generate a QuickTime reference file (.mov) that will point to external video clip Avid OpAtom such as
    \Avid MediaFIles\MXF\V1.mxf,
    \Avid MediaFIles\MXF\A1.mxf,
    \Avid MediaFIles\MXF\A2.mxf.
I can use Avid News Cutter (NLE) to export a Quicktime reference mov file that point to external OpAtom mxf files.
    My questions are:
    1. How can I use QuickTime API to generate the same QT reference?
    2. Can we use QuickTime API to parse or modify the Avid Generated QT reference file?
If I want to change the referenced external video source location info can we use QT API to do that?
    3. I have tried John Cromie's "QuickTime for .Net and Com Developers" using AxQTControl1.URL to parse a QT reference file, however, I can't find out where the external source clip location info in this object!!
    4. I have tried Legacywindowsqttools Dunpster but still can't parse the location info.
Does anyone know where the external source clip location info hide in QT API object?

Insert a Shape and re-size & position it to cover the movie. In the Inspector > Graphic tab, set the Opacity of the Shape to 0%. Then hyperlink that transparent Shape.

  • HELP. Quicktime Movies from FCP with DVCPro = Black Boxes across image.

When exporting my HD movie from Final Cut Pro (5) using either Quicktime Movie or Quicktime COnversion with the footage's native setting of DVCPro HD 720p the resulting movie has thick black rectangles on the left and right sides and one right in the middle.
    Is it a codec issue?
    Please help.

It is a 16X9 CROP, not some sort of anamorphic distortion... so just choose that, and export...
If you set it to be 320X180 THAT will distort it. It should start as 320X240. The crop then results in 320X180. If it's new software it's Compressor 3.

  • Exporting - Quicktime Movie

I have a question that I think is going to be pretty simple for you guys to answer, though I have looked around on the net for a solid answer . . . not having found much consistency.
My question deals with a 79 min. sequence to use in iDVD.
I exported as a Quicktime Movie (NOT Quicktime conversion), not self-contained.
There is a slight loss in video quality when the Quicktime window is small (about the size of a YouTube screen). When I increase the Quicktime window to full screen, the movie is jumpy, and the quality drop off is even more obvious. Also, the audio and video is slightly (very slightly) out of sync when a subject is talking. Overall, the Quicktime Movie is just not nearly as good as watching the sequence in the canvas, no matter what size the canvas is.
Some information about the project and footage:
    Sequence properties:
    Vid Rate - 29.97 fps
    Frame Size - 1440 x 1080
    Compressor - Apple Int. Codec
    Pixel Aspect - HD (1440x1080)
I think I used the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 Easy Setup  . . .. .  format was "all formats," and rate is 29.97.
The audio files in the sequence are 48 khz and 16 bit.
All footage was HDV 1080i on a Sony HVR-A1U
Obviously, I am a novice . .  done a lot of small videos, but this is my first big project, and I am beginning to get worried it is going to be poor quality.  Thank you very much, in advance, for any help.

    Welcome Fisheye16HP,
iDVD can only produce SD quality no matter what you start off with, HDV or AVCHD.
HDV and AVCHD Sequences directly exported to iDVD do produce unwanted artifacts.
    You have two choices.
Copy/Paste your HDV Sequence into an NTSC Anamorphic Sequence, render and export as Quicktime Movie.
    or
Downconvert the original HDV footage through the camera to SD and edit into an NTSC Anamorphic Sequence, export as Quicktime Movie, this would require a re-edit of your work.
The first choice is probably the course of least resistance.
Be aware that the export needs to be set correctly for iDVD 16:9 to work with SD.

  • Trouble exporting HD file to Quicktime in FCP7

    Hello,
I am trying to export an HD file from the timeline to Quicktime Conversion.  I keep getting an out of memory or general error.  I was told that my graphics card was not compatible (ATI Radeon HD 5770 with FCP7.  I need to know if this is true before I purchase a new card.  I can provide more info if needed.
    Thank you.

You often see this error if you've got graphic files that are not rgb (such as cmyk),or if your graphic files are larger than 4000 x 4000 pixels or if you're using source files that are not in a fcp friendly format like h264.  If your sequence contains any such files, convert them and replace.
You might also tell us the format of your source clips and your sequence settings, in particular, compressor (or codec), pixel dimensions and frame rates.
I also strongly recommend that you use file:  export:  quicktime Movie (not quicktime conversion) with current settings and use compressor to convert the file to the desired format.

  • Exporting 4 channel Quicktime movies

Does anyone know how to export a 4 channel quicktime movie using quicktime pro? I can't seem to figure it out. I know quicktime can handle more than two channels because i have captured 4 channel audio using a Aja Kona 2 card and breakout box. Any help would be great.

Have had some limited success creating H.264/5.1 AAC clips and less spectacular results with H.264/5.1 AC3 files. Unfortunately, QT will not output Dolby Digital to my decoder via the optical line but will allow Pro Logic II playback. What is worse, the AC3 file will not playback in VLC due to the unrecognized fourCC (4 character code for this format combination).
In any case, you simply need to merge your video track (in whatever format you use) with an AAC audio file converted from either separate (mono) audio tracks, two stereo tracks (in your case), or a single multichannel PCM/AIFF track using the add and scale option. If you have an extracted AC3 file and a working QT AC3 codec, you can use a similar approach to add/scale the video to the AC3 file. In either case, once you have the merged file, AAC channels must then correctly "designated" to their appropriate AAC channel in the properties window.
Not a very good example, but here is the result of my initial test H.264/AAC test. (Need to go back when I have the chance and try an AC3 version: http://homepage.mac.com/jrwalker4/.Public/SoundTestChaptered.mov

  • Export a Full Quality QuickTime Movie for CD

Hello - I have an 11 min. movie, that contains mostly pics, but also some video - I will be giving it to someone to play on there computer, which will also project onto a screen, during a wedding reception. She just wants to be able to load it into her computer - what is the most effective way of doing this?
I thought about exporting to a 720x480 Quicktime movie, using Qtime Conversion in FCP, and H.264 compression - is there a better way, so that it will show the best quality? After burning the movie to a QT file onto a CD, I thought I would then give to her to download - is this the proper way to do this type of thing?
Any suggestions are most appreciated as always - thank you...

    KL -
That might be fine... thing is you WANT to have her test it. Sometimes playing large files like this (yes, even at h264) can choke a pc pushing it out to a projection unit.
I like putting it back to tape and sending it full rez out of a deck or other video camera.
I never trust PCs to even play a DVD out.

  • Quicktime Movies Causes UI To Lock Up (Safari & Quicktime Player)

When a page in Safari has an embedded Quicktime Movie, it causes my computer to lockup. It will not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard input. The whole UI just locks up. Same with opening movies in Quicktime Player. I can SSH into the box, and when I run "top", I don't see anything pegging the CPU. The biggest problem is, Safari and Quicktime Player don't "crash", so no crash report is generated, and I have nothing to reference. I can issue a "sudo reboot" and the machine will restart.
If I set Safari to run in Rosetta, I experience no problems. Same with the Quicktime Player. However, Firefox work perfectly displaying Quicktime Movies.
I have the most current firmware and system updates. The problem is reproducible with a fresh user account, as well as with a clean system install. I even went to the trouble of zeroing the drive, and reinstalling a fresh copy of the OS. I tested pre updates, and post updates, and it is reproducable across all instances. This was all done in front of a Genius at the Apple Store.
    He was stumped...

I'm not a QuickTime engineer but I noticed that the QuickTime Plugin.webplugin first appeared in Tiger and version 7. It caused me some grief when using the Safari Activity window to find source URL's for QuickTime files in pages. Removing it allowed the URL to appear in the Activity window.
Now most pages use javascript (.js) files to display QuickTimme files so they don't appear in the Activity window.
I beleive that the plug-in is used by Dashboard Widgets (also html files) to do some kind of "voodoo" similar to the plug-in architecture of Web browsers.
I've just applied at the La Cantera Apple Store for a job. Is that where you "stumped the genius"?

  • Safari Crash When Microsoft Scrollwheel Used Over Quicktime Movie

Lets say I have a Quicktime Movie displayed in a web page opened in Safari. If I put the cursor over the movie and scroll up and down with the scroll wheel, the movie will go into scrub mode briefly before completely crashing the system. The computer will not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard input. I have to ssh into the machine and issue a 'sudo reboot' to recover (not really a recover though). I have the most current firmware and system updates. The problem is reproducible with a fresh user account, as well as with a clean system install.
    • I tried a different Microsoft Mouse that was of the same model and it did the same thing.
    • I just tested a Kensington StudioMouse, and the problem doesn't exist.
    • I also tried the Microsoft mouse on another MacBook and it did not exhibit the same problem.
Anyone have any insight to what might be going on?

New information: I guess the mouse was a Red Herring, as the problem is now happening with any type of mouse, as well as the trackpad. So, scratch that information. Actually, whenever a page with Quicktime embedded is displayed, it crashes. Same with opening movies in Quicktime Player. Something is fundamentally wrong here...
Yes, it happens in a test accout as well. I even went to the trouble of zeroing the drive, and reinstalling a fresh copy of the OS. I tested pre updates, and post updates, and it is reproducable across all instances. This was all done in front of a Genius at the Apple Store.
The problem is, Safari doesn't "crash", so no crash report is generated. The whole UI just locks up. I can move the mouse around, but it does not react to clicking or keyboard input. I can SSH into the box, and when I run "top", I don't see anything pegging the CPU.
Firefox work perfectly displaying Quicktime Movies. Also, if I set Safari to run in Rosetta, I experience no problems. It has something to do with Safari and the Intel Quicktime Plugins.
    This is all too baffling...

  • Exporting Issues--grainy quality with lines

I am trying to export a video in Final Cut 7 using Quicktime Conversion and no matter what changes I make there is this grainy quality that shows up on the exported file every time there is camera movement or movement in general. Its as if you can see the lines of the different "fields" of video not coming together. Everything is fine in the program but once I export the .mov file seems to be corrupted.

OK, your source and Sequence look correct, without any field dominance problems.  Now we can look elsewhere for your problem.
Did you try using Quicktime 7 with the correct preferences set to view your exported file, as I suggested in an earlier post?
Also, export about 30 seconds of your sequence (mark an in point and 30 seconds later on the timeline mark an out point) without using conversion - File > Export > Quicktime Movie with the Settings set to Current Settings and the box for Self Contained checked.
Once that is exported, take a look at that movie using Quicktime 7 as described above and see if that looks OK.
