Trouble finding IDE drives...

Hi!
I´ve search the forum and found some questions regarding this issue, but I haven´t found any solution yet. So I hope some clever guy here might have some answers.
My problem is that (almost) every time I cold boot my computer it freezes at the BIOS screen with the message "finding IDE drives". The nothing happens. I can´t go to BIOS set up or do anything. If I wait about a minute or two and then do a warm boot (i e press the reset button) everything works fine. The problem only occur when I cold boot my computer, not when the computer is up and running and I do warm boot. Could it have something to do with my PSU? Anyhow besides that my computer works excellent - but it is a bit iriitating...
Here is my setup:

Case: Silverstone TJ-05 with two 120 fans (front and back)
Help would be appreciated!

Hi there,
Yes you have some point in saying that your PSU is a bit weak specially when it as 2 rails of 12v it's better to have 1 with that combined power of those 2.
But for the problem at hand, try to exchange the opticals to IDE1 and the discs to IDE2, this if you have the OS installed in the SATA HDD if not well.....
Go to a stronger PSU to, but that's only my opinion....
Be well....

  • Having trouble finding Vista drive

Well here's a simple fix that worked for me and my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra, so I assume it'll work for most any Creative product:
Simply download the Windows XP driver installer for whatever player you have. When it's downloaded, right-click on it, hit properties, and go to the 'Compatibility' tab. Enable compatibility mode, and set it to Windows XP SP2. Install it as you would normally, and the XP driver should work fine!
Hope this helps all you Vista adopters!Message Edited by Samiam303 on 04-02-200708:26 PM

  • Sata and ide drive troubles

I tried searching on this, but didn't find what I was looking for.  If my sata drive is plugged in on it's own, everything boots fine, but when I hook up my ide drive, windows won't boot.  It goes through the Nvidia boot utility and tells me it can't find a boot disk.  Even if I go through and manually select the sata drive as the boot drive, it still doesn't work.  I've tried the ide drive on my primary channel with a cdrw on the secondary, and vice versa.  I know it will work, because it worked previously.  Had to format and reinstall and now it's a no go.  I've tried the sata on channels 1 and 3 with nothing different

I must say I had similar problem.   While swapping IDE cables back and forth among different hdrives, the computer would not boot, would not even recognize the WD or Maxtor hard drive in any master/slave configuration.  In fact in the POST,  it would see my SATA Hitachi, but would refuse to boot from it.
The solution was a new replacement IDE cable.  I guess, after several dozens of swaps, if not careful, some of the tiny cable strands in the IDE cable will be damaged permanently as a result of pulling on them while trying to connect/disconnect them.   The evidence of a damaged IDE cable is not apparent.  This happened to the red MSI supplied cable that came with my mobo.
After struggling with this problem for a day, I did come up with the idea of just trying and replacing the cable, and voila - problem was solved, and puter booted up no problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • Image Capture and Preview have trouble finding scanner. Photoshop no problem.

Image Capture and Preview have trouble finding the scanner wirelessly unless it is on when the Mac starts up. Photoshop finds the scanner no problem. Any suggestions for Image Capture or Preview?
The scanner is Canon MP620. Mac is MBP, running 10.8.2
I have done all the uninstall, reinstall, update drivers, etc. Please don't bother suggesting that stuff.
    Thanks.

As for the scanner - so is this new one wireless? When I hooked up my Epson All-in-One, I had to install it via USB first before I could install the wireless (per their instructions).  With Snow Leopard, I simply installed the driver and it covered and recognized both the print and scan function - not so in Lion; I had to go through hoops with the scanner part and it finally showed up as a separate unit. I thought that is silly, but - as long as it works.....  I'm trying to think of possibilities since I'm about out of ideas, so you might want to consider that (if it applies). The other troubleshooting suggestions usually include redoing the "add" function after a reboot.
As for Image Capture, I am out of ideas. FWIW, I never use it - in my workflow, there is no need for it. Not sure if this would have an impact, but make sure that you choose Image Capture in the CDs&DVDs Preference Pane (mine is set to ignore or ask purposely):
If that does not work, I'd suggest reinstalling the OS over the top of what you have.

My new LaCie external hard drive is 'seen' by my iMac and I can go into the Finder and open files and folders. I am using the hard drive for Time Machine back up. However Time Machine says it can't find the drive.
The same thing happened recently between Final Cut Express and my other LaCie external hard drive used as the Scratch disk. It fixed itself.
I've run out of ideas. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • My Time Machine will no longer find the drive I used to use to backup

For the past few months I have been using a partitioned LaCie 1tb hard drive as a Time Machine back up for my MacBook Air. The drive is plugged into a MacMini that is at my house and whilst at home my MacBook Air is connected via a wifi network and was backing up fine. After a recent software update on my MacMini I can no longer get Time Machine to work to that drive. I can connect to the drive through finder and even see the 'TimeMachine' file there,  but the Time Machine itself will not find the drive so won't back up. Now, trying to set it up again to that drive it won't locate it.
I have been reading forums and have checked the following things:
My Lacie drive is mounted to the MacMini
The file sharing is set to AFP on both the MacBook Air and the MacMini
The Lacie drive is formated to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I have done a 'Verify Disk' and it cam eup fine
    There is ample space available
There are no other files on that part of the drive
I can access the other partitioned drive just fine (e.g. my iTunes library is based on that drive and music is playing)
I only recently purchased this hard drive so I could get extra storage space and partion it for Time Machine. It all worked fine until recently.
Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get Time Machine to find this drive again?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Possible to switch ide drives back to hdX or at least boot by UUID?

I have been messing around for a while on this machine trying to get it to boot properly from a compact flash card connected to the ide controller. It boots fine by using the /dev/sda designation in grub but will not work using UUID.
    Here is the set up:
It is a headless machine (not now though, until booting is properly set up)
The boot drive is connected to the only ide controller in the machine.
There are two onboard sata ports and a 4 port sata adapter that may or may not have drives connected on boot-up
So here is the problem; when a sata drive is connected to the onboard sata port they take priority in linux's naming of the devices. So with one sata drive connected my boot drive now becomes /dev/sdb under linux. The bios still boots off the ide drive and grub still finds the proper stuff on the ide drive. I tried to solve the issue by using UUIDs but the kernel is unable to locate the uuid upon boot. I tried using mkinitcpio to create an initramfs but either mkinitcpio doesn't prepare one with udev support or there is something else causing it just not to work.
So I am thinking if the kernel was able to be set to give all ide drives /dev/hdx designations like it used to pre-2007 everything would work perfectly. Anyone know if that is even possible anymore in recent kernels?
Or, if anyone knows what is needed to boot from uuid that would work as well.
Here is what I have in grub's menu.lst:
    # (1) Arch unRAID
    title Arch unRAID
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /kernel-2.6.32.24-unRAID root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/3fba6525-8f8b-4ddd-bb18-4a1f61104aa0 ro acpi_enforce_resources=lax
    initrd /kernel-2.6.32.24-unRAID.img
The above is not working. The kernel panics with a statement about not being able to find the root under that uuid.
    Thanks again for any help.

slytux wrote:Try rebuilding the initramfs image without 'scsi' and 'sata' in the HOOKS array.  I had a similar problem when I had to remove 'pata' because I had an IDE drive that I was using for a secondary disk.
Ok I tried this and still got a kernel panic. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by removing pata as well. Isn't that required to detect the ide drives? I guess I could try removing it as well and see what happens.

  • IDE drives not recognized by K8N Neo 2 Bios: Revisited

I am truely reaching my wits end with this problem and I'm beginning to believe that I'm not alone in dealing with this issue. Let me recap.  After building my new system around the K8N Neo 2 m.b. and a AMD Athlon 64 3200 939, (Winchester) cpu I booted for the first time only to find that none of my hdds were recognized.  Optical drives yes but not my two Maxtor IDE drives. Initially no variation in configuration would get the board to recognize my hdds but then suddenly, for no apparent reason my hdds were recognized but try as I may I cannot install another hdd as a slave on IDE channel 1.  If I attempt this the master drive no longer is recognized.  An optical as slave yes but not a hdd.  Keep in mind I am no novice although this is the first MSI board I have purchased.  I have checked the cables, (all good), made certain that the jumpers were set correctly and have tested the drives in my other system and they are good to go.  I even flashed my bios in the hope that ultimately it would make a difference. Since I had a working system and nothing seemed to be helping I decided to let it rest for a week. However, this weekend while installing a program that required reboot I discovered that the system was slow and it turns out that one of my drives had disappeared to XP.  Rebooting, I discovered that the drive was not detected by the bios during the reboot,  that is until I turned off the system altogether and did a cold boot. It worked.
I would just write it off as a defective m.b. if it wasn't for the fact that it has continued to recognize optical drives in all configurations.  Can anyone offer any insight into this problem? This really makes no sense to me and I'm the type of person who wants to understand.

How are your hard  drives if you have no opticals connected.
HD are definately in IDE1 ??
Makes no difference; with the opticals taken out no drives were detected.  Install the opticals on either channel without hdd's and they were detected.  Like I wrote, finally the board was able to detect hdds but put another hdd on the same channel and poof, neither were detected.  Neither channel appears able to accept more than 1 hdd period.  Right now I have 1 hdd, (boot drive) on channel 1 and a secondary hdd and an optical on channel 2.  It works but what disturbed me was the fact that during a reboot  this weekend my hdd on   the 2nd channel was not recognized and continued to be not recognized until I did a cold boot.  This situation makes my head ache    Bad IDE controller? Bad BIOS? Weird IDE cable problem? Bad PS?

  • Can't get IDE drive to work with K8N NEO2

I built my computer two months ago.  The only hard drive I installed was a Samsung 160GB SATA.  The Windows XP installation was flawless and the system has worked perfectly ever since.
This past week I decided to install my old Western Digital IDE hard drive.  I connected it to PATA port 1 on the motherboard.  It's jumpered as a Primary device and connected to the primary port on the IDE cable.
The problem is that when I boot the computer with the IDE drive connected it will hang on the gray Platinum screen for around 5 minutes.  If I hit DEL and enter BIOS after 5 minutes I can see that the drive is detected and the boot order already was set for the SATA drive first and the IDE drive second.  Then if I reboot it hangs on the Platinum screen again for five minutes.  When it finally clears that I get messages indicating that no boot device is available.  If I shut down, disconnect the IDE drive, and reboot with only the SATA drive connected it boots flawlessly.
I checked my device manager and see that the nvidia nforce3 250 Parallel ATA controller and Serial ATA controller drivers are installed.
Is there anything else I can check or do to get the computer to boot with an IDE drive connected?
    Thanks!

WD drives are special compared to others .
If they are alone on the ide channel they shall not be jumpered as master .
This is only when it is sharing the channel with another ide/atapi device .
Instead the jumper shall be removed , they call it single drive jumpering (SD).
And the reason why bios get hung is :
It finds a master jumpered drive , and since it does it will try to detect the slave
    but there isn't one .

  • Troubles finding activities that were created by others.

    Hello experts,
I'm having troubles finding activities that were created by others.
I should mention that we've upgraded our system to EHP1.
This problem occurs only in our upgraded system.
In order to find the activities i am using BTQAct search object,
    using object id.
In case that i'm logged in to the system with the creating user I am
able to find this particular activity,
in case that i'm logged in with any other user, I am not able to find
this particular activity but, I am able to find any other activity that was created by me.
To remind you, I had no problems finding any activity with any user
and NOT depending who is the creator of that specific activity.
    Why is this happening?
What can I do to fix this?
    Thank you very much,
    Maor.

Thanks for the suggestions, Erland.  Unfortunately, I checked and there weren't always schemas added for these users as some were sysadmins or db_owners which is the exception to this feature in security.  Also, their SIDs don't match up with any
existing SID values  in sys.database_principals or sys.server_principals.  The groups to which they belong are there, but these SIDs that aren't able to be resolved are different, and created for the individual user.
The only way I've found to identify who owns an object is when it's a job and I use the system function SQLAgent_SUSER_SNAME() which will return the actual domain\account name of the person who owns the job.  This object only exists in msdb and SUSER_SNAME
doesn't work in user databases.  There might be some other system function out there I haven't stumbled on yet but the two system tables you mentioned unfortunately rarely help.  Let me know if you have any other ideas?  And thanks for the response!

  • I want to uninstall my wacom tablet, but I can't find the driver?

Okay, so i just got a Yiynova monitor and I want to hook it up to my iMac (which i believe is a 2008 or 2009 model and is currently running on OS X 10.5.8) But before I do that I was told I need to uninstall all wacom tablet drivers. My wacom tablet is a model CTE-640 and I've searched all over my computer but I can't seem to find any driver for it anywhere. It was forever ago when I installed it, so I don't even remember what the driver was called. What am I missing? Does anyone have any idea what it might be called? I've searched "wacom"  "tablet" "bamboo" and found nothing. Is it possible that there isn't even a driver on my computer and the wacom tablet was just working anyways? (i never had a problem with the tablet, it works fine.)
    Thanks so much!!

okay PS. i was just reading the user manual for my tablet, and it said under the section about uninstalling the driver, that without the driver the tablet would fuction only as a mouse and not as a tablet. this is crazy, but i think that for the past several years i've only been using the tablet "as a mouse" (GASP!) to test this i went into photoshop to see if the "eraser" fuction on the back of the pen would work and it didn't(still drew a line, didn't erase).. so pretty sure there was never a driver installed to begin with... .. .. mystery solved? • RT USB Format suddenly not finding Hard Drive

For a remote desktop RT PC running LabVIEW RT 8.6, I had tested 8 different motherboards in an attempt to get LabVIEW Real-Time
(Pharlap) to recognize an RT desktop’s SATA hard-drive and network card.  We had
finally found a single motherboard that allowed LabVIEW Real-time to recognize
and format the SATA hard drive to run pharlap.
    Unfortunately, that ASUS motherboard
has been discontinued, so we had to hunt once again for motherboards
that would run correctly with LabVIEW Real-Time.  After some effort, we did find
another motherboard which allowed the USB format utility to format the SATA
drive and successfully boot the RT pharlap environment.  Upon this success, our
company proceeded to order a large number of these new motherboards in case they
too became discontinued.  However, the very same motherboard which operated
correctly 2 weeks ago can no longer see the SATA hard drive through LabVIEW
real-time, even though the BIOS correctly recognizes the hard
    drive.
    I find it particularly bizarre
because the hard drive does actually boot to LabVIEW Real-time on its own, but
upon booting via the hard drive, Pharlap states “Error booting hard drive
program,” and proceeds to run in safe mode *on the very same hard drive*.  Any attempts
to reformat this drive via the 8.5.1 or 8.6 usb utility now result in “Unable to
detect ATA/SATA hard drive” even though the very same usb, hard drive, and
motherboard worked correctly in re-formatting, installing, and running remote VIs 2 weeks ago.
If you could please provide any
insight into this madness, it would be greatly appreciated.  For reference, we
had previously used the ASUS P5K motherboard (which is now discontinued) and are
now experiencing our mixed success/failure on the Foxconn G33M motherboard. Both
of these motherboards use the ICH9 chipset that is AHCI and IDE compatibility
capable, which is a requirement for desktop RTs.

I've tried multiple hard drives that were full formatted to FAT16 and FAT32 in Windows XP and got the same result.
During the two week period, the motherboard had been removed from its case and sat on my desk with anti-static covers draped over and under it.  I've been trying the motherboard without a case ever since, as that would confound issues further.
To make matters worse, I've been trying new motherboards with the ICH10 and ICH10R southbridge chipsets (AHCI and legacy IDE compatible), and the USB format utility freezes at "Transferring control to user program," so I can't even get to attempting a hard drive format there.  I've tried changing the USB settings to Legacy as suggested in the NI literature and even unplugging the hard drives entirely, as the other motherboard still boots to the USB without a hard drive present, and it still hangs at the same place before the utility loads.
I've gone through every possible iteration of BIOS settings (especially the IDE ones) on every motherboard I've tried.  Ever since the ICH8 chipset, I've never managed to get an actual PATA (IDE) drive to work either.
Here is a list of motherboards we've tried that didn't work due to either the USB utility hanging or the hard drive not being seen:
    Intel DG33BU
    TYAN S5220AG2NR
    ASUS P5E-VM DO
    ASUS P5N-MX
    ABIT IP35 Pro
    SuperMicro C2SBA
    ASUS P5Q
    MSI P45 Neo
The ASUS P5K worked but is discontinued, and the Foxconn G33M is the one that worked 2 weeks ago but doesn't now.
