Trouble free year?

Just curious to know if anyone has had their Ipod mini for a trouble free year? One year of reliable good constant service. Also if the battery lasts just a year, and its almost as expensive to replace the battery as it is to buy a new one, that basicaly makes it a throw away item in just a year, correct me if Im wrong.

"its almost as expensive to replace the battery as it is to buy a new one, that basicaly makes it a throw away item in just a year, correct me if Im wrong.
Ok, you're wrong. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $59, plus $6.95 shipping, and there are 3rd party battery vendors who do it for much less. And where did you get the idea that the battery lasts just a year? There has to be more myths and legends about the iPod battery than the legens of King Arthur!!
And yes, my wife's mini has had just over one year of trouble free use. Not one single issue.

Have you recently used any midi controller with Logic.. such as a hardware controller or even an iPad app.
If you used an iOS app, power down (Not just put to sleep) your iOS device and see what happens.. If that fixes it you are running an iOS controler in the background and so you will need to close it..

Failing that, quit Logic and trash the Control Surface pref file.... restart Logic and see if that cures it..
In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder from the menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.

  • Upgrade to CS4 Prod. Premium - is it trouble free

There is probably a forum for CS4 Production Premium but I wanted to get the opinions of a few photoshop users who may have made this upgrade.
I'm running Windows XP pro on P4 3.2gh processors with 2 gb Ram.
I've been using Production studio of CS2 and later upgraded some tools to CS3 like photoshop and Illustrator.
I remember having a fair bit of trouble installing Production Studio... A lot of people did when it was new.  A lot of dinking around was required as I recall.
I'm now wanting to upgrade to CS4 Production Premium and wondered if people could share there experiences with that sort of upgrade.
Is the cs4 package a pain in the butt to install... Did it install smoothly.
Please let me know what to expect...

If you can find any software that is trouble free I would like to buy stock in that company.  But seriously, CS4 makes major demands on the video card and you would be wise to read threads on this forum to see how that would affect you with your current computer hardware/csoftware.
Yikes... I should have known someone would feel compelled to make that quip.
Must have been clear that my question was more... `was it a pain in the butt to install'.
Can you be a little more specific about what you are hinting at?  Hard to know how to be wise with no clue to go on.
I have an Nvidia GeForce FX 5700LE (256MB) card
I guess another thing to ask is if its worth upgrading to CS4.  Is there lots of new functionality?
Just reading the `whats new' hype isn't like hearing from experienced users what they find worth using.
I remember back when I upgraded to Production Studio, one of the big things I was after was the
`Dynamic link' .  After the big buildup of how great it would be... I was pretty disappointed and never did find it very usefull at all. in fact it seemed to make the machine more unstable when calling up both AE and Premiere at the same time.  I quit using altogether after a few crashes.  And even when I didn't crash it just wasn't much different or better than the old way.
This upgrade will cost me about $600 for the upgrade I'm qualified for.
But back to the clues about what to look for... can you suggest some likely search strings to use?

  • KT4 Ultra +Radeon 9700 Pro Trouble Free !

After a few months of relatively trouble free gaming with KT4 Ultra and Radeon 9700 Pro, I was shocked to find recently that my PC began to crash after only a few minutes of gameplay.   8o
Believing that a reinstall of all the relavent drivers would cure the problem, I set about trawling through the latest advice on what works / doesnt work. This I have to say was a minefield of anecdotes, mainly bad ones - as most of you guys are probably aware !
After installing drivers as 'best' I could, the problem remained the same.
It would appear that to ask for a complete list of recommended drivers is futile, since there is little correlation between reported 'fixes'. There is always someone reporting that the latest versions are causing problems.
For the moment, this tale has a happy ending cos I found that the system is getting too hot (after some months !), so with the side panel off and a 12 inch desk fan blowing inside I managed a 4 hour session with now problems. )
The purpose of the post is to highlight the disturbing fragility of these systems (which i'm sure many of you have first hand experince), both in hardware and software and to share my disbelief at the apparent lack of sustained testing that these boards undergo.
Looks like a better cooling system is in order

It's unfortunate that most of the new hardware seems to pump out heat. The ATI 9700 pro use about 100W of power on it's own. The whole system puts out enough heat to warm a small room.
I have noticed that the heatsink on the ATI card gets very hot, even though it has a fairly serious fan on it (the fan on my Sapphire card is a lot like a blue orb).
I am wondering if a lot of problems with these setups are thermal. I have the KT4 Ultra and ATI 9700 pro and it has not given problems at all.
I have (from past experience) installed plenty of cooling in my case (a full tower, that helps too). I find that the cooler everything as kept, the less problems there are.
I think that at some stage in the near future there will have to be a change somewhere. Either in heat output (reduction in power use) or cooling.

  • Adding on a free year

One of the companies I work for gave me a complimentary 1 year free of Creative Cloud.  I was already a member so I wanted to use this when my agreement ended, which it's going to do at the end of february.  I wanted to know if there was some way I could use the code and add the year now so it would just roll over into the new year.  I was afraid once it came time, the only options I would have when renewing would be to change card information if necessary.  I also wanted to make sure that it didn't start getting automatically charged the full amount once the next month came up.  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Steve
It would be best to wait until the end of February before redeeming your code.  In my experience, redeeming a code can create a new membership rather than extending an existing membership.
If you redeem the code in February and find it creates a new membership, just get in touch with us and we'll cancel your paid membership.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Trouble grouping years into decade groups

Hello. I have encountered a problem with a pivot table (PT ) used to create a demo dashboard for snowfall data at a ski resort.
My data is in an Excel Table beginning with column 'Season' (1970, 1971, 1972, etc.  through 2014). Each column to the right of the ‘Season’ column has snowfall data for each month of that year (Oct, Nov,  Dec,  etc. )
First, I created a PT from my source data to illustrate Annual Snowfall trends from 1970 – 2014. Then I created a pivot chart (line) for later addition to a dashboard.  It is on a tab called ‘AnnualTotals’.  So far so good.
But when I attempt to start with a new tab to create a (2nd) pivot chart, from the same data source, for the purpose of grouping snowfall totals by decade - any Grouping in my new 'SnowfallByDecade' tab changes the first 'AnnualTotals' tab as well –
even though the new (2nd) PT is on a different tab.
The original data for 'Seasons' was TEXT, so I changed it to 'General' in hope that would solve the problem.  But I am still unable to create a new tab to group by decade without Excel automatically modifying the first pivot table and pivot (line) chart
    (‘AnnualTotal’ tab).
I have made dashboards before with grouping and never saw this phenomenon, so I am confused.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.  Thanks in advance.
I also have an Excel (xlsx) file that can e-mail for further investigation.

    Hi,
The reason the change of the pivot table is effecting you charts, because the charts are linked to the pivot table.
Because it is linked it is called a pivot chart.
You can do two things, remove the link and select the parts you want to make the chart from. Every time you have a change, you might need to refresh it.
Or make a new pivot table for you second chart. When your pivot is updated your chart will also automatically update.
You will have a pivot for both chart designs.
With pivot tables (in excel 2010) you also have the option slicers. This kan also make it easy to change the pivot table, that is a nice feature.
    Good luck!

  • IPad and ebooks .epub which fonts trouble free

    Hi.
Does anyone have a CURENT REFERENCE a LIST of FONTS that will work without problems on the popular tablets specifically iPads and kindles.
I am creating an ebook -  an .epub file on my Macbookpro OS X 10.8 using inDesign CC.
I searched the internet, this forum, other forums etc and included 2013 and 2014 in the search terms but I HAVE not found a list.
One tutorial discusses using TrueType Or OpenType Fonts not postscript fonts but although this was a very good tutorial about creating epubs....it is from 2009.
Another article listed fonts for the kindleFire and KindleWhite but I have NOT found a CURRENT LIST for IPADS or iOS.
I Would like to cross reference these lists and USE FONTS that display on both.
I am not concerned with smartphones at this point.
    Thanks.

Does iBook just refuse to recognize any fonts but its own?
I think that may well be correct. It is a closed system and as far as I know does not yet recognize embedded fonts in ePub or css/(x)html (only in the pdf context, or presumably as part of an app).
OS X Safari has supported embedded fonts for two years now, but the mobile version does not.
You can ask for this feature to be added here:

  • Who has upgraded to 3.1.1 trouble free

I have been hesitant to upgrade due to all of the negative comments about 3.0.
I was wondering if people have actually had no problems with the upgrade.
How are things going? Is it worth the time and trouble?

The only problem that I have noticed is that videos take much longer to load on you tube, so long that I haven't been using the you tube app because it's virtually impossible to wait to load. (8-10 mins loading time for a 2 minute video) iPod touch 2G V3.1.1.

  • Free year of Creative Cloud that I can't use right away.

I won a license for a year of Adobe Creative Cloud, but I want to use it on an Apple computer that I don't have the money for right now. Will the year begin from the date I register the license using the code or from the day it was given to me?

No-one knows exactly when you won the license.
Unless there is an expiry date on whatever was issued to you (email? voucher?) to notify you that you'd won then my guess would be that it will start counting from the date you first activate your Cloud membership with Adobe. i.e. when you first install and activate the software.

  • How to have a trouble free upgrade to Snow Leopard

At a long time Mac devotee, I used to be the first in line for upgrades. Over the past few years though, I have decided to wait a couple of months to see what happens. I have had too many occasions when I pulled my hair out trying to get printers, scanners and other odd peripherals to work, waiting for new drivers, or even worse, not work at all.
So I watched and waited. Learned that Apple Talk was no more. Experimented with IP printing on my 10.5 system and found out that it worked. Bought Snow Leopard, and GUID formatted an external drive with 10.6 - booted it, and used it to play with my software to see what would work and what wouldn't. (everything, in my case, worked).
I heard about all the speed increases, and had experienced a gradual slow down in my own MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.2 ghz, 4gb of ram, and a self updated 300 gb hard drive.
I decided to do a totally clean intall on a new 500gb 7,200 rpm drive ($129 from OWC)
Backed up everything twice - pics and music three times.
Installed the drive - takes about 15 to 30 minutes - and installed SL. Put the old SATA into an external box.
It boots in about 38 seconds - amazing for me - and even Spotlight - which seemed to drag everything whilst it was indexing - doesn't drag anymore.
Even Office Reminders (part of Entourage/Office) which seemed to slow down everything else loading behaves and loads quickly.
I did compact the Entourage database prior to upgrading but that was about the only modification to my current data/files.
The old drive can be booted if necessary to get your serial numbers etc from downloaded software.
I NEVER use Migration Assistant because it's all or nothing in each category and you never know if you are bringing back the rubbish that slowed you down before.
It takes longer, and requires more preparation, but there is no question in my mind that a TOTAL clean intall is the best way to go.
Hope this helps - I don't mean to be arrogant or a "know-it-all" (which I'm not) - I am just passing on my 26 years experience from system 1 onwards.

lol, yes, that's a question! you can not unmark it as a question now. don't worry too much about that. but in the future when you are making a new thread you get an option to mark your post as a question (that's the default) or not. after you first post it you have a limited time to unmark it as a question by choosing the appropriate button at the top of the thread. but after a while it's locked in and you can not change it. see the help and Terms of use link on the right for details

  • A trouble free way of giving Administrators access to redirected folders on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard?

A few months ago I set up some redirected folders on a clients Windows Small Busines Server 2008. I recall that setting up the redirected folders was straightforward, but when I edited the permissions to allow administrative access to these server located
folders, all hell broke lose. The permissions change seemed to trash the folders. I think I managed to 'bodge' it for a couple of users and got it working, but it was such a headache I didn't bother doing it for the other users.
Now, I sit in front of a brand-spanking-new Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard box which is going to be installed with a new client within 48 hours. I would like to set up redirected folders and would like to grant admin rights on these folders so I can view
their contents directly from the server.
It seems to me that there is no offical Microsoft documentation which relates specifically to doing this on Windows Server 2008. Given the amount of problems this has caused for many admins, I am astounded.
Somewhere there are articles which describe how to do it on 2003, but this procedure does not work well in 2008.
There is an SBS article that admits permissions can be trashed, but this is no help on Standard edition:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2010/10/08/folder-redirection-in-small-business-server-2008.aspx
I have just posted a note on this rather long article:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/smallbusinessserver/thread/70fa7f0e-7f2c-4f00-8401-42d262d80cd6
So, my question, hopefully to Microsoft employee, please can you document
exactly how to grant admin rights to users redirected folders on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, and please could you do it today :-)
In the absence of this help, then I'm afraid this is yet another great but badly implemented feature that we will not be using.

    Typical Micro$haft answer!

    NO IT DOESN'T!
Did you bother to read the original question?
Quote "So, my question, hopefully to Microsoft employee, please can you document exactly how
to grant admin rights to users redirected folders on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard"
So, Micro$haft, Why did you give instructions to Server 2003?
... When the requester SPECIFICALLY stated: "Somewhere
there are articles which describe how to do it on 2003, but this procedure does not work well in 2008"

  • Activating FileVault - a good (ie trouble-free) idea?

I'm probably about to buy a MacBook to replace a recently deceased iMac G5. I'd previously avoided using FileVault as I didn't set it up when I got the machine and there wasn't enough disc space on the HD when I later contemplated using FileVault. I was thinking of doing things differently this time and enabling FileVault from the get-go.
However, I was told by someone that FileVault can cause more problems than it's worth, including compatibility issues. Is this true? I won't be sharing my Mac with anyone and it's purely for home use, not to become part of a LAN.
One other question: I'm going to be restoring my iMac user folder from my TimeMachine backup when I get the MacBook. If I turn on FileVault beforehand, will my restored user folder subsequently be encrypted?
    Thanks.

I don't know exactly what your privacy protection needs are, but you may not need to encrypt
your entire user's home folder. If you do then filevault may be a good solution.
Other solutions you may want to look at are
    1. True Crypt
    http://www.truecrypt.org/
    2. encrypted disk images
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21118?viewlocale=en_US
(Actually file vault uses an encrypted disk image.)

    4. Kj's openssl file encryption scripts

These are four scripts you can copy to your /usr/bin directory

  • Trouble Free Install

Yesterday, I installed Leopard on my Macbook Pro with no problems what so ever. Before the install, I made sure my HD was repaired and reporting no problems. Then I made a boot back up on my G-Raid.
When it came time for the install, I put the Leopard install CD in the drive and it went to work. I just followed the system prompts. I was never asked to choose an "update" or archive and install or erase and install... nothing. The program just installed itself in all of about 40 minutes. No problems at all.
Now if I could just find a way to control the system font size. The fonts in the finder side bar is so small. HELP

  • Whoo Hoo! Trouble Free P965 Platinum Install!

Well, this is going to be my first and probably only post here.  I know a lot of people who read this forum are either thinking of buying this board or have one and are getting ready to assemble their new machines.
I was in the later group and in reading through all the other posts I started to get a bit concerned that I was going to have a rough ride.  I am happy to report that that was not the case.  My build went smooth as butter.  Here what I put together...
    MSI P965 Platinum
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe CPU
    XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
    2 x 1 GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
    Maxtor L01F300 320GB SATA
    NEC 18X DVD +/-R
    Antec TruePower Trio 650w
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 ATX Case
I did run into two small issues.  First, I was getting a yellow "!" next to one entry in the device manager.  SM... something, can't remember exactly what it was called.  Turns out if you install the Intel INI drivers from the included install CD that gets cleared up.  Second was with the infamous JMicron drivers.  I was able to get XP installed, but I was getting REALLY SLOW read speeds when I was installing games.  I updated the drivers and and now my drive's speed is where it should be.
So to sum up, this MoBo has been a dream to install, the very few problems I encountered were minor and my system is totally stable and fast!  If you're considering buying this board, by all means, go for it.
    Happy computing all!

I'm glad to know that you are happy with your system .
    Enjoy and have Funz!
