Trouble getting a good bass tone--need advice

Hey everyone,
I record my bass by pluging directly into my MOTU Traveler. I like to record dry and then try and adjust for a better tone in the mix. The problem I've been having is my bass tone always ends up sounding muddy or to "bassy". I just can't seem to get a simple, good sounding bass tone. I have a good instrument (Fender P-bass) and I'm meticulous about setting a proper level. Does anyone have any suggestions short of buying another preamp (instead of using the ones on my MOTU)? Any particular plug-in settings or other set-up advice would be helpful. Thanks.

If you want to greatly improve the tone from your bass, a better pre-amp or direct box will do wonders.
We all look for "plug-in fixes". The truth is, there aren't any. Get, good, solid tone going in, and you won't need to use any plug-ins. Wanting to use plug-ins, now that's a different story...
Other than dishing out the advice you asked not to receive (although it is the advice that will most likely fix your problem), I'll second the EQ option, and follow it whole heartedly with Timothy's recommendation on the Ampeg SVX plug-in.
The Ampeg bass amp plug-in sounds great. However, I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't say spend that money on a high quality direct box first , like the Avalon U5, Countryman 85, or Radial J48...

Anyone know how get some good metal tones for guitar?

I'm plugging straight in through a boss metalzone and setting the amp simulation on clean but I haven't been able to get it to sound halfway decent. I've been screwing around with different amp simulations for days and I can't get any tones that I really like. I've tried bypassing my metalzone but the preset distortions have way to much feedback and noise. Any suggestions on what settings to use? by the way, I play progressive thrash/death/black/doom metal and I'm using logic express 7.2.3

Yeah, I second chaining different Plug-Ins. Also try using Bus Sends and Aux tracks to blend certain amounts of effects. With this, try mixing 3 or more Guitar Amps on Aux Tracks with different settings on each, or slightly different from each one, and pan them to something you like. I have found this to be extremely awesome. I got the idea after reading how they engineered 10,000 Days by Tool and found Adam Jones uses 3 cabinets with an SM57, 421, and another mic to complement the 57 and 421, and they put 3 mics on the cabinets, so the guitar sound was made of 9 tracks and were never EQ'ed because they could use those tracks as EQ and tweak it the way they wanted.

Getting 15mb on 38mb package need advice ...

I had Virgin Media 20mb package for last 3 years getting 95% of time 19.5mb d/l 1.2mb u/l with a ping between 20- 30 ms. this was great for everything except streaming my gaming sessions. I decided to splash out on BT infinity fibre 38mb optic package to move up to the next speed level as the btsport deal was a better one than Virgins. On signup I was quoted 38mb up and 10mb down. Living in city centre of Dundee 50m from our cabinet things were looking good. Installation went well the engineer said my line could handle up to 100mb if I ever wanted to upgrade. However when the Infinity engineer had finished he said `Hmm thats strange your only getting 13mb atm. Dont worry it will improve over next few days and improve a lot.` 5 days in and doing speedtest every hour the avg speed is 15mb down to 12/13 mb peak times and the occasional 17/18mb reading. My ping is now anywhere from 40-130ms which has made gaming very difficult. Upload is only thing close to promised speeds with avg of 8mb. So im paying more for a worse service and feel absolutely robbed. I know 3 people on the same deal getting over 35mb in same city What should my next steps be? Does it sound like a fault or is this pretty standard practice?

How do I get good Distortion Tone? Any Tips?

I can't seem to get a good sounding distortion guitar tone using the logic express guitar amp pro or corresponding effects together with it. It always sounds thin or too muddy. So I did double track and make one brighter and one darker which made it sound better but not quite there. All the clean takes sound fine but the distortion sounds like ***. And yes I know how to play and have a gibson les paul. SO anybody have tips other then the obvious (eq, and compression) please lend me a hand.

No doubt loads of people are now going to recommend 3rd-party plug-ins, but I would advise saving your money until you've had a really good exploration of what the provided plug-ins can manage.
So keep changing those settings…
You said you didn't want the obvious advice, but actually that is the best advice (EQ, Compression).
There are other plug-ins besides Guitar Amp Pro that are worth experimenting with. And if the sound you're getting is "always either too thin or too muddy" then that means all you have to do is find a way of getting in between those two extremes… you must be getting close!
Alternatively, if your interface allows it, you could run out to a real cab & mic it up. It would be a bit of trouble, but it would be authentic & unique…

Longtime Logic user, my old rig running with an Audiowerk 8 card (dont laugh too hard please, its worked great for years! ).
Now, after purchasing a MBP and LE7 ... how best to upgrade even further, to be able to record say 4-8 tracks (live instrument) at a time, into the optical or Firewire ports. I have an external 750Gb FW drive.
Also have a Mackie 16 chnl mixer and hoping to find a way to send the Master stereo pair (or maybe even track inserts) from the Mackie to the optical or FW input of my MBP. But how to do this ? Im guessing there's a box or gizmo somewhere that would be perfect.
Unfortunately, all of the boxes and gizmos Ive looked at so far seem to duplicate functions I already have, esp mic preamps (dont need any more of those !). I prefer 19" rackmount devices as they work well with portability, and fit into my SKB rig easily.

if you really want to use the pre's on your mackie, and it has multiple bus/aux outputs which I presume it does, then you can easily set up a device such as the 828 to take all your input channels from the mackie, and then to run a bunch of return pairs back out to it.
depending on your budget there are prob a few others for you to look at. RME and metric halo always get rave reviews from users, but are pricier. also the focusrite sapphire might be worth a look, as well as the apogee ensemble.
also I just noticed you are using logic express, not pro. so there may be some limitations on the number of simultaneous inputs and outputs that I'm unaware of.

I would be concerned too if the songs I purchased from iTunes were not downloading to my iPhone. You have taken some great troubleshooting steps already, and thank you for providing the details of the steps you too. I have a few additional suggestions to get it downloaded to your iPhone.
First, I recommend checking to see if the download was interrupted:
If your download was interrupted using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
From the Home screen, tap the iTunes app.
For iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Downloads. For iPad, tap Downloads.
Enter your account name and password if prompted.
Tap the blue download arrow to resume.

Don't need it to work as anything else, other than a ethernet connected Time Machine backup. Already have a wireless network that works fine so no need to mess with it. We get the internet via cable company and their modem is upstairs and the Time Capsule is downstairs in the basement. The latest error message was about it could not backup as it was already in use (should have written it down before clicking OK and moving on.

New to CS6 Dreamweaver, creating a "Responsive Website" having trouble getting fluid divs to behave

Trying to create a "Responsive Website" and I'm having trouble getting my fluid divs that I create to "break" their link from the "Boilerplate" .
I'm using a "Fluid Grid layout Div" to create a section that has a transparent background of rgba(0,0,0,0.3) and that's perfect, then I add two more "Fluid Grid layout Div's" inside the transparent one to create a 2-column part in the section and that's where the trouble is.
None of the "formatting" I've set for the text in my ID's or Classes are being used - just reverts to what's in the "Boilerplate" i.e. "p,h2,h3" and I can't get it to "break" it's link the "Boilerplate" so I can apply my formatting.
I have been able to select my formatting at times but it is ignored and uses what's in the "Boilerplate".
Kept trying different ways to get it to work and now I've so many of both the ID's and Class's that their not all showing up as an option to be able select them.
I'm missing something basic and after two days it still escapes me.
Please somebody, tell me what I'm missing.

FluidGrid Layouts are not easy to learn. You need a good grasp of fundamental RWD concepts including CSS Media Queries. Keep your layout simple and be patient. The first time I used FGLayouts, I had to start over 9 times before I got acceptable results.

Best advice for beginners:
Build Mobile Layout first. Everything else is based on this primary layout. Then build Tablet layout and finally Desktop. Don't worry about content. Just build the layout & save often during development.
DO NOT TAMPER with the boilerplate.css or FGLayout.css code. Even experts can break the layout in a hurry. Use a separate external style sheet for content and typography styles.
If you're using CS6 ver 12.0, you cannot nest divs inside other divs. Everything must be inside the .gridContainer like this:

Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED. Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.

I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?

I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
