Trouble getting emails from a Time Capsule Back Up following HD Death

Happy 2015.
I am having trouble getting my old emails back from a Time Capsule back up.
I had set Time Machine to back up onto my Time Capsule which it seemed to be doing just fine. My hard drive then completely died. I took it to a reputable local repair shop who had to replace the drive as the Old Drive was completely fried.
I am up and running with the New Drive but Time Capsule wont recognise the back up of the Old Drive for me to get email (or anything else back). Isn't this the whole point of Time capsule? The back up is definitely there on my Time Capsule.
I only need to get the emails back. Would Migration Assistant help me to just get the emails back or would that mean I am effectively starting again with the back up copy of the Old Drive as my new starting point. I would prefer not to do this if possible as there is new file etc on the New Drive.
I suppose one thing I could do is save all my new file and emails created on the New Drive since the the Old Drive Death to an external device. Use Migration Assistant to start again on the New Drive with the last back up of the Old Drive and than import all the post Drive Death files and emails. Would prefer not to do this if there is an easier way.
I am on a mid-2007 iMac 24" running 10.9.5
All suggestions gratefully received.

You can import just the emails.

  • How do you get Mountain Lion (OS 10.8) back from a time-capsule back-up

I have a Macbook Pro Late 2008 model which was running Mountain Lion (Mac OS 10.6) and for Christmas I received a new hard drive. I backed everything up on my time capsule and installed the new hard drive and now I can't get my original operating system back. The laptop came with OS 10.5.8 (Leopard) and I installed this with the original disk but when I try to restore my back-up from the time capsule it won't let me because the back-up is running a newer version of Mac OS. I can't download Mavericks because Leopard doesn't have the app store. It seems that the only way to do it is to buy a hard copy of Snow Leopard from the apple store and wait for it to be delivered, which is what I'll have to do if there is no other option, but I thought I'd check here first if anyone had any experience of this problem. Unfortunately I don't have the snow leopard disk, I don't remember ever installing snow leopard (I thought I went straight to Lion but it would seem thats not possible without the app store) but I guess I must have borrowed a disk from a family member or something.
Anyone had any luck restoring a newer operating system from a time machine backup? Is this even possible?

I ended up putting the old hard drive back in because I thought I was probably going to have to order the Snow Leopard disk from Apple and needed some of the information on my old drive. But before I changed back I had to reinstall the old OS system (leopard) because I couldn't get anywhere with the backup. Whats the restore partition? There was an option to restore from time machine, is that what you mean?

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • How do I restore information from a time capsule Back up to a new computer???

Last week my Imac was stolen. Fortunately the thieves did not take the Airport Time Capsule on which I have my back-ups.
Yesterday I bought a new Imac and today I tried to recover my back-ups.
A very disappointing experience I must say!
During installation I somewhere chose the option to restore information from a previous backup. I entered all the requested ID's and passwords and the system started to reset the backups. It indicated that the "transfer file process" would require 2 hrs 45 minutes. Very promising!
However, after less than 10 minutes it stopped. When I checked the information on the Imac it appeared to be inclomplete. Part of my photo's had been recovered, but my E-mail settings including address books and old E-mails had not been recovered.
I then used the Migration assistant to start the transfer process again. Unfortunately with the same sad result.
When I tried to repeat the process again, the system did not find the Imac back-up on the time machine anymore.
Is there anybody who can help me out???

Your backups may be corrupted.  Try repairing them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  Be sure to connect to the TC via Ethernet.
Then start over, per the green box in How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?

  • How can I safe my data back from the Time capsule to iphone and macbook?

    Hi,
last weekend we were robbed while being on vacation and iphones and macbook air got stolen. Good thing was that at home we had a time capsule and our normal macbook. As soon as we get the new iphones and the new airbook we want to get our itunes and apps and datas back to the iphones and airbook ... can somebody tell us how to re-safe or back-safe stuff from the time capsule back to the equipment?
Thank you ... I feel so "naked" without my phone :-(
    Virtualkate

Sorry about your loss. Follow the directions here to use Time Capsule to restore your new Air to the state your old Air was in when stolen. When you first connect your new phones, you'll be given the option of restoring from the backup of your old phones or setting up as new. Restore from your previous backups, followed by syncing your content back to your phones. You should be good to go. Maintaining current backups makes this a piece of cake.

  • Retrieving iCal data from Time Capsule back up

My system crashed and onfortunatly i had to install a new system. Now i want my 'old' data back in iCal. What do i need to get back from my Time Capsule back up to get the data back in my iCal???
I already retrieved users -> myname -> library -> calendars but this has no effect at all.
    plsssssssssssss help me

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try this:
Make a copy of the ~/Library/Calendars folder from your backup and put it on your Desktop.
Rename the folder 'Old.icbu' (without the quotes).
There will probably be a dialog confirming that you want to make this name change.
It should now look like an iCal backup file (which is actually a package).
Double click 'Old.icbu' on the Desktop.
(Hopefully) iCal will open and confirm that you want to revert all your calendars to this version.
Let me know how it goes.
    Best wishes
    John M

  • Trouble sending email from iPod Touch

I have My own Local ISP, I'm not having a problem from their end. I am having trouble sending my email from the outgoing mail server from my iPod Touch, I have it set up correctly.
What I wanted and tried to do is sync my composed and sent emails from my iPod Touch to my computer email Program (Apple). What I did was I plugged in my iPod Touch to my computer, clicked on "Devices" in iTunes, clicked on the Info. Tab and scrolled down to "Mail Accounts" and chose the "Sync Selected mail accounts": check box, Then I chose my ISP Pop account email check box, then chose the "Advance" section and checked all the check boxes: Contacts, Calendars, mail accounts, and Bookmarks, then I clicked on the Sync Button at the bottom. After I did this I tried sending an email from my iPod Touch, the email went to the out box and not to the sent section of my iPod Touch, my iPod suddenly stopped sending email and had little trouble getting email from my computer while my iPod Touch was "checking" its "email" with its little blue wheel spinning at the bottom of the mail iPod Touch screen, My computer email program (apple) would get the little Triangle next to the inbox. I had went Back to my iTunes, iPod Touch "Devices", Info Tab, and undid what I did and re hit the Sync Button again, I then had noticed that in the "Advance section" the "Mail Accounts" check box was un high lighted, I am not able to check it if I wanted to. Now sometimes I am able to get my email from my computer, I am able to send email from my computer email program (Apple).
Does any one have a solution and that can help solve this sticky problem? and help me refix this?
    Thanks,
    Trisha Foster.

Without having the stuff to hand - this is what I did. You need to make sure that your password and username are left blank in the settings for out going mail on your touch. this will be changed back if you let itunes sync email addresses on your computer. I had the same problem until I read somewhere that you needed these setting left blank.

  • HT201250 i have lost all my pics on my mac how do i get them back on my new install from my time capsule

how do i get a back up from my time machine?
i tried to load windows on my mac did not work had ti install snow lep all over again
i wanted to recover from my time capsule to recieve all my pics ect but when i go into time machine i have to set it all back up again how do i find my saved files from the last time it backed it up no dates or days nothing ?? have i lost all of my data???

As you erased the drive and reinstalled Mac OS X, Time Machine detects it as a new OS X copy, so it's normal you can't see your old backups. To solve this, see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
If you want to restore all your old data, use Migration Assistant instead > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user with your transferred files

  • Trouble migrating from time capsule back-up

I am hoping to migrate data from a time machine back-up to a new mac. I connected the back-up disk (which backs up multiple computers) and initiated the migration assistant. Unfortunately, when I get to the point of selecting which details I wish to transfer, I am directed to a back-up from a different machine. How can I redirect the migration to use a different back-up file? I tried to copy my target back-up into the backups.backupdb folder but I do not have permissions to do this.

  • I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

  • I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule.

I keep getting a 'Looking for backup disc' message from my  Time Capsule. I have set it up several times without any apparent problems (I have even done a Hard and Factory reset). Everything seems fine until I ask Timemachine to 'back up', and then the problems start.
    Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. I bought the Time Capsule this past July and it worked fine for about a month then it told me it hadn't backed up in 10 days and was stuck looking for the backup drive. I called Apple and they said the reason was that the Time Capsule was in Bridge mode. I launched Airport Utility and sure enough, it was. I changed it to DCHP and NAT (Airport Utility -> Network tab -> Router Mode). After updating the Time Capsule, I couldn't even get on the Internet, let alone do a backup. A logged into the software for my cable modem and discovered that it too was in Bridge mode.
It turned out (for me) that neither should be in Bridge mode (which is for connecting two networks). Your cable modem only has one IP address. Your Time Capsule should be doing the NAT (Network Address Translation) which translates the internal IP addresses on your network to the one IP address your cable modem has. When I switched my Time Capsule to DHCP and NAT, it conflicted with the fact that the cable modem was also trying to do this. The answer was to turn this off on the modem (allowing all the packets to just go through the modem to the Time Capsule and let IT do the NAT). I did that last week and since then, my Time Capsule has been working perfectly.
    1) Go to your cable modem (via a browser, enter "http://192.168.100.1"). Log-in and find the setting that indicates NAT. If you're uncomfortable doing this or can't find it, call your cable company and ask Tech Support to do it for you. They can do it remotely.
    2) Launch Airport Utilty. Go to the Network Tab and change the router mode to "DHCP and NAT".
    3) You may need to restart your modem and Time Capsule. I can't remember if I had to or not.
I hope this helps. I tried many things but this is the only solution that fixed it for me. And it makes sense. Only one device, the cable modem or the Time Capsule, can be doing the NAT.

  • I cannot get time capsule back "on line" (green)

I cannot get time capsule back "on line" (green); tried reset button; tried unplugging everything; comes back on flashing amber, won't get back to green; computer now can't find my network.
    what now?

Ok.. we still need to know how are you connected to the TC.. YOU not the cable side.. the YOU side.
Are you using wireless or ethernet to your computer? If not please plug in ethernet and turn off the airport in the computer.
Now reopen the airport utility.. can it find it..
If not press the reset on the TC for 10sec.. until the led on front flashes rapidly.
The AU should now find the TC.
Make sure you leave the TC in router mode.. unfortunately the later AU tends to bridge the TC without permission from you.. one of those extra helpful things Apple did.
If you are still on Lion download and use 5.6 utility. It is far superior.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
You can also load it into ML but it is tricky.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4172563?start=0&tstart=0
Apple have removed useful functions and ease of use.. although I guess they would disagree with the later.

It just means some spammer is using your email address as the sender address for their spam. This is very easy to do - anyone can do it simply by changing the From email address in their email program. It does not mean your account was hacked or you have a virus (there are no current Mac viruses on the loose anyway, nor has there been for years).
There's nothing you can do about it. It can happen to anyone and the spammers will move on to using someone else's email address before long.
