Trouble getting iDVD to burn a movie created in iMovie?

I am running OS 10.4.11 on a PowerBook G4 with SuperDrive that has been updated with iLife '08. I was able to create and burn several home movies to a DVD last year and at least two since performing the iLife '08 upgrade. But now when I double click the _Create iDVD Project_ button I always get the message _There was an internal iDVD error during the last action. This is not a movie_.
I tried to burn a DVD with one of the movies that I had previously burned and I got the same error message. After searching the web for a solution I tried repairing the permissions, deleting the .plists from iMovie and iDVD, and later reinstalling the operating system along with iLife '08. When I read that iLife '08 might be a problem I reinstalled the older version of iDVD (but not iMovie since iLife '08 is not compatible with Tiger) and I still get the same message. Can anyone offer a possible solution to my problem?
PS Just once while working with one of the older movies I was able to start the burning process. After that I was not able to repeat this action a second time with the same movie.

I have tried every solution suggested by Apple and others on the web (where there are many) but nothing has worked. I am convinced this iMovie to iDVD problem is caused by Apple's own software. Now if this had been the only problem I think I would have kept trying a while longer --- but my PowerBook G4 17" is one that has a serial number starting with W85 (with nasty lines which now number over 30), plus it has one broken key top (which Apple reps tell me will require that I replace the complete keyboard). My Apple care having run out some time ago, I now have to pay for all repairs. So I have taken the path of least resistance and purchased a new computer. I will not say which one but I am confident I won't end up with the same problems. I guess one could say that in one way my question has been answered but I am not at all happy.

  • How do you burn a movie created in iMovie 10 to DVD?

I would like to use the new iMovie with Maverick but I don't know how to take the finised movie and export it onto a dvd.  Any suggestions?

Go to File>Share>File, choose the size (probably should choose either SD or Large) then click Next, give it a name, then click Save.
Go to iDVD. Go to File>Import>Video and select the file you just created. It will bring the video into your iDVD project.
This was always the way I did it in the previous version of iMovie. Works just fine.

I have Burn, it is a poor substitute for iDVD.
There is NO alternative.   But iDVD is very easy to get.
iDVD is a “Must Have".   (Yes, it should be included.)
Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.

If you are still within your 15 day return period,  nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.
Most people report that by asking here:   http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html
    or here:   http://www.apple.com/contact/
they got a free copy of iDVD.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

  • Can't get iDVD to burn disc/image

Heya, I've got my entire dvd working in iDVD, with the menus, movies, and everything totaling 2.9GB out of 4.2GB possible. Menus are 8:13 out of a possible 15:00, so I know the data sizes are fine.
Whenever I try to burn my disc, it gets to the "Rendering menu video asset" section, and nothing happens. The program just goes to the spinning beach ball and then stops responding.
I searched the forums a bit and found out to try saving the project as a disc image, and then burn it with disc utility, but even on that, it still freezes when trying to render the menus.
This is the third disc I have authored, and the other two worked just fine, and very quickly. Any ideas on why this isn't working.
P.S. I have not edited any of the videos directly, such as there are no transitions or chapter markers in any of the videos.

Have you used any MP3s in iDVD? AAC and AIFF are OK.

  • Problem Using iDVD to burn a movie

Hi, I'm very new to Mac world and trying to learn.
Recently when I tried to use my iDVD to burn DVD, I faced a problem where even the Mac Support centre fail to help me.
I have a movie files and individual is about 420M in DiVX format. When I import into the iDVD, by right a DVD should be able to accomodate up to 5 or 6 movie. However, when I import the 3rd movie file, the iDVD told me I already exit a DVD capacity of 4.7G.
Can any expert can help me to resolve this issue so that I can burn my movie in DVD using the iDVD?
    thanks for the advise.

    Hi
    1. To me DivX is a stranged format. I use only streamingDV QT.mov files as in iMovie
I drop the movie project icon into iDVD.
I would convert them to this.
    2. iDVD doesn't care about Mb or Gbs on file size - only minutes in total including menu.
If it exceeds 60 or 120 minutes dep on quality encoding seleected there are problems.
One can easily make a 100Mb file that lasts >>2h and a 50Gb that is a 30 min movie.

    Good Morning,
My computer is using Snow Leopard 10.6.5 and has ilife 09 installed on an imac. I have been reading it is better to use imovie 06. When I tried to do a custom install from the 06 disk imovie and idvd were grayed out but had a checkmark. It would not let me deselect idvd. Not really knowing how to do this I quite the process. Can you or someone please advise me on how and what exactly to do in order to accomplish a custom install of imovie 06? Should I delete imovie 09 first? If so how is this accomplished. Perhaps it would be less complicated to purchase photo to movie? Really do not want to spend unless it is necessary since I only know a little about what I'm doing but enough to be dangerous to my computer

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

  • I use Magic iDVD to burn complete movies and have started having a problem multiplexing and burning. I need to know what I can do about it so I can burn my movies.

I have been burning movies with iDVD for several years and once in a while it has trouble multiplexing. Usually I can fix it by doing a combination fix of turning off my laptop and unplugging for 20 minutes. Then when I'm ready to turn it back on, I plug it in, wait five seconds then turn it on. I then clean the disc drive with a dry brush cleaner disc. That has usually done the trick. Not any more. I'm stuck and don't know what else I can try. I have plenty of space on my hard drive, about 70 GB, which has always been sufficient for burning discs. If there is anyone out there whoi can help me, I'd sure appreciate it.

This post by Bengt Wärleby discusses many potential multiplexing issues: Multiplexing Error: Apple Support Communities
Also follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How to burn a dvd created in iMovie with OS Maverics - why is it in MP4 format and not .MOV?

I have created a movie in iMovie, shared it and put it in a burn folder on my desktop, then tried to burn it. It seemed to work (the hard disc was spinning and computer told me when it was finished) but when i tried to play it on my Macbook Pro (which is where I created it) it won't play. It is in MP4 format. iMovie used to create movies in .Mov format. Is this the reason it won't play and what can i do about it?

    Hi
    A. making a .mp4 file then putting it onto a DVD (via Finder/DeskTop) results in a DATA-DVD - which can not be played by any (to my knowledge) Standard DVD-Player.
But if inserted into a window-PC and using VLC-player - I GUESS that it will play just fine.
    B. To be played in a Standard DVD-Player You need to do a VIDEO-DVD and to do this You need a DVD-Authoring program (it is a MUST)
    C. Things that use to go wrong are:
    - Using cheap brands of DVD discs as Memorex, NoName etc - I only use Verbatim
    - Using DVD+/-RW - usually do not work, DVD+R usually works BUT not on older DVD-players - I only use DVD-R
    - BURN SPEED - as faster as more BURN ERRORS (WORSE) - in iDVD - Best IS NOT BEST AT ALL - I never go faster than x4 - most often I use x2
    Reg Authoring programs:
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.
    Free solutions:
Burn - a free alternative from Internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
Gives a fairly good resulting Video-DVD
Free DVD Creator.app - free from Apple Store
(very simple - Quality ?? not sure - looked problematic reg. Interlacing)

  • Difficulties getting iDVD to burn

So, for some reason, I am unable to get past the Process Movies/Encoding Audio portion of the iDVD burning process. I haven't had any problems until now. iDVD appears to get through all the steps, but freezes up at the very end of the Encoding Audio portion, just before it switches over to actually burning the DVD (I get a swirly wheel instead of my cursor and a "iDVD Not Responding" message in my Activity Monitor; the rest of my applications continue to work fine, but slowly). At first I thought it was a memory issue (that I didn't have enough available memory), since iDVD still completes and burns shorter DVDs when I try to burn a smaller (two-minute) movie. As a result, I freed up 27 GBs of space, thinking this would resolve the problem, but I still ran into the same problem when I tried to burn my larger (forty-five minute) movie (that is, I have 27 GBs available when I begin to import the movie into iMovie, 17 GBs when I'm done importing and editing the movie and ready to share with IDVD, and 14 GBs when I begin the burning process). Now, in the past (and as recently as last week), I've consistently been able to burn hour-plus DVDs with as little as 5.5 GBs of available hard drive space, so it seems unlikely to me that 14 GBs is not enough space to burn a 45 minute DVD. My activity monitor shows I have about 13.5 GBs of available memory left when the program freezes, just moments before initiating the actual burn process.
I suppose I will now try to make a disk image and try to burn a DVD from there, seeing as I've seen that this seems to work for others who are having similar problems. I'm sure that the attempt to do it that way will give me more information about what is going on (depending on what happens). But, even if that works, I'd much prefer to know what is going wrong with iDVD and get it fixed rather than having to circumvent the iDVD burning process every time I want to make a DVD. I will update you with my results.
Does anyone have any advice about what is going on here and how I can fix it. I'm a real layman when it comes to computer lingo, so the more dumbed-down the advice, the better.
    Thanks

Going the disk image approach is always a good idea.
You may have problem content - tell us more about your movie content.
It may simply be the old 'the watched pot never boils' issue. There are many times when iDVD may APPEAR to be frozen, but is, in fact, still 'thinking'. It's always a good idea to wait things out (even up to an hour) to give iDVD a chance to finish things.
but freezes up at the very end of the Encoding Audio portion
The apparent 'freeze' is often observed at this point.
a "iDVD Not Responding" message in my Activity Monitor
You can't always believe what it says - this can happen when iDVD is 'thinking'.
We always say "burning DVDs with iDVD requires two things: lots of hard disk space and lot of patience".

  • Auto encoding and storage space using iDVD to burn a movie?

Today I wanted to burn some old TV shows I had downloaded (legally) onto a blank DVD, that could be viewed on a regular DVD player/TV. I used iDVD to do so, dragging and dropping .avi files onto iDVD's start up window. Everything worked fine, iDVD automatically processed/encoded the 350 MB files, and the resulting DVDs played the shows fine on my consumer DVD. Two questions:
    1. Even though the files were only 350 MB, iDVD would not let me burn more than one file at a time onto a blank 4.7 Gb disc. Even after expanding the file during processing, the resulting new burn project was only 1.86 Gb. With 4.7 on a blank disc, why would iDVD not let me drop at least one more file for inclusion?
    2. iDVD did everything automatically; there were no pop ups asking me about how I wanted it encoded on the disc, as an avi file or consumer-readable DVD, and no indicator of how big it would expand after processing or how much space it would take up. Is that normal, or shouldn't I be given choices, including write-speed/quality/compression/file size choices that might have affected how many 1-hour episodes could fit on a blank DVD?
Thanks for any clarity on this.

    Hi R
Not familiar with .avi files I can share some thoughts about iDVD.
iDVD doesn't care about Mega or Giga bytes ONLY minutes of movie.
iDVD 5 can handle two qualities.
    - less than 60 min movie and (Best performance)
    - less than 120 min (Best quality)
The iDVD menue is included in this = less time for movie.
That's why one can not with iDVD put 2 x 60 movie on a DVD.
You have to select Quality from start then drop Your movies into the
theme window (at least that's what I do with .mov files)
With other DVD creating programs like DVD Studio pro or as I use
Devideon which came with my external DVD burner I can choose all
kinds of settings and even squese in 4 hours on a DVD (with less than
    VHS quality)

  • Burning old .mov files in iMovie HD6 (iDVD)

I have a number of old "movies" in the .mov format originally produced in iMovie02 and iMovie03 that I would like to burn again using the DVD burner in iLife06.
Unfortunately the old .mov file when I do burn it produces a result with large pixels, etc
The problem I think is that I need to somehow convert the .mov to a .dv file that the new iLife06 (iDVD) likes...
Is this possible? Is there a way to convert old .mov files to .dv files or should I try something else?
Many thanks for yet another dumb question!
    Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x)
    Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x)
    Power Mac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Have you tried importing the files into iMovie yet? iMovie should automactically convert the files to DV.
Not knowing anything else about the xxx.mov files I suggest that.
Can you remember when you exported them from the old iMovie versions if it was at "full quality"?
What program did you use to burn the xx.mov files?
Hopefully you can view them on a TV monitor once they're converted to dv inside iMovie and report back how they look.
