Trouble getting InDesign pages into iPhoto

For years I have been designing iPhoto book pages in Adobe InDesign CS3 and using the "Save PDF to iPhoto" option in the printer dialog box to export them to iPhoto. I might add that as an interim step, once I select that option, the page goes through an automator work flow that first changes the PDF to a JPEG image and then exports it to iPhoto. In changing the PDF to a JPEG, I maximize the resolution to 300dpi in the Automator settings and I get really good results. However, that was when I used OS10.4. I now have OS10.6 and because of some security enhancements, the "Save PDF to iPhoto" option is no longer supported with InDesign. Adobe recommends a workaround as follows: Export the InDesign page to the desktop as a PDF and open that up using Preview. Then, you can access the "Save PDF to iPhoto" option in Preview's print dialog box. This works fine with one big exception. The PDF bypasses the Automator workflow and goes directly to iPhoto minus the important resolution enhancements that Automator previously provided. I have no idea why it would do this. Any suggestions as to how I can assure the PDF accesses the Automator workflow before en Thanks.

Best way to get InDesign pages into AE?

I am doing an ad for a book, and I need to animate specific contents from the book, which I have as an InDesign file. It is about 300 pages long, and I need to use maybe 20 or 30 of those pages in the spot. I have been using a PDF version of the book, opening individual pages in PS or AI and then breaking the elements out into different layers, but it is pretty labor intensive and the images are highly compressed.
I'd like to get each of the discreet elements from a specific page into a layered PSD or AI file that I can import as a comp to AE so I can start animating right away. Any ideas for a less painful way to accomplish this?

This seems to be working ok, but I have run into 1 small snag: the page size is specified in picas and points in ID, and as a result it ends up being too small (531x657 in this case) when I finally bring it into AE, which is fine for the vectors, but causes the raster images to be downsampled a lot from their original resolution. Also, I have to convert each image to RGB.
For anyone else who might be helped by this thread, my workaround for the resolution issue has been to make a custom PDF preset from ID that is high-res, converts color to RGB, and includes crop marks. Then after opening the .pdf in AI, resize the artboard 400% (so its over 2k horizontal), then select all and resize 400%. Things can get nudged off center a bit at this point, but it's not too hard to line it up on the artboard using the crop marks before breaking it all out into layers. When I bring it into AE as a composition, I'm using "Document Size," and the images are coming in at a high enough resolution to be useful.
In a pinch I could bring in the original .tif images linked to the ID document, but that means re-doing a lot of the layout in AE manually, which is really too painful to do more than a handfull of times.
If anyone has a better way of preserving the resolution of the images all the way from ID through to AE, I'd love to hear it, but for now this seems like the best solution I can come up with.

You can make the collages easily if you have iWork. Just open a letter sized page in landscape mode and drag the photos onto the page, rotate and postiion as necessary. Then do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save PDF to iPhoto to get a 200 dpi jpeg version of the Pages page into iPhoto. From there you can add it to your book and use a blank page with the option to have an image as the backbround.
If you have a 3rd party image editor that supports layers you can create the collage with it.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Is it possible to place an InDesign page into the same InDesign document

I'm able to place an InDesign page into another InDesign document, but am not able to place an InDesign page an InDesign document when the page is part of the same InDesign document. Is there any way around this limitation?

PDF is the better bet (although you might as well save a copy of your document). Snippets have all kinds of problems for this because of master items and the fact that from a script you can only export individual items as snippets (although you can group them and export that).

COMBINE 3 INDESIGN PAGES INTO I

Hi, I'm looking to resize and place 2 indesign CS3 pages (front and back of post cards-can be sized at 5.625" x 3.625" or 6.125" x 4.375") onto a 3rd 8.5" x 11" indesign page that contains the front and the back of the cards with additional copy. It is the way we currently submit proofs to our clients for approval as a single page that they in turn fax back to us. Thanks for any help on this.

When i drag a photo out of iphoto and into photoshop how do i save it back into iphoto. when I save it back it doesn't show up in my library as the saved version. any ideas

To expand on Terence's post a bit, if you use PS as your editor of choice in iPhoto via iPhoto's preferences and edit a file it may be changed to a psd file during the Save process. You'll be presented with the navigation save window in PS. If that occurs you can take one of two routes:
1 - navigate to the Desktop and save the psd file as a new file and then import it into iPhoto.
2 - cancel the save, to to the Layers pane and flatten the image. Then save as a jpg. You'll get the smaller save window where you select the quality of the jpg and the type of format, Baseline, Baseline Optimized or Progressive) You'll want to choose Baseline. If you select this type of save the edited version will be saved in the Modified folder and the thumbnail will be updated as it should

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. Trouble getting iWeb pages to hosting site

I am having trouble getting my updated iWeb pages loaded to my GoDaddy hosting web site. Every time I update a page in iWeb and then upload the pages by ftp to Godaddy, the home page either does not show up or it is badly distored or botched. Godaddy says it is an iWeb problem. The guy said something about "scripting". I am lost and frustrated. Help please!

Thanks for the help. I have rebuilt the Index page, again. I tried the local folder, saved to Sites on the Mac. Then I uploaded just the index page directly to Godaddy using the ftp in my file manager, but this time nothing.
I went back to the iWeb ftp to upload the Index page to the subfolder in my root directory on GoDaddy and moved all the files I could find to the root. THis time I have some of the elements of the index page in place (pictures, links) but none of the template background, colors, or fonts. All the other pages are OK.

Trouble getting video files into iPod Video

I am having trouble getting some video files onto my Video iPod.
Some videos will sync onto my iPod, some won't.
But, they are formatted the same way. And have the same extension.
The format for the files are:
Frame size: 320x240
Video: H.264
Audio: AAC
I see nothing in Quicktime's movie properties that is different between the videos that will, and will not transfer onto my iPod.
What do I need to change to make these files update onto my iPod?

Trouble getting pics from mac iphoto onto the cloud to they are viewable on the cloud or ipad, iphone itv etc. i did try to change system pref in mac but there is no cloud there, only the old me logo, also the "ME" logo still shows on my tool bar on ipho

OK so I've recently placed some photos on iphoto that I would like to share with my other devices - ipad, iphone, apple tv. There doesn't appear to be anywhere on the could for photos - so that is my first question. My second question is how do I even get the photos from my mac into the cloud? The system preferences for the mac instruct to update the cloud icon however my system is still showing the old MobileMe white cloud blue sky icon - not the current cloud. The Mobile Me icon is inoperable. So I've tried several times to drop ad drag, change preferences, nothing so far is working. I've checked that I've got the latest software, running Mac OS X 10.6.8, ipad and iphone are similarly up to date.
any help is appreciated.

You cannot use iCloud with 10.6.8; the minimum requirement is Lion 10.7.2 - this is a paid upgrade. The current system is Mountain Lion and if your Mac meets the requirements you can obtain it from the Mac App Store (in Applications). The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:

If you are compliant with Lion but not Mountain Lion you may be able to get Lion by ringing the Apple Store on the number at bottom left of this page. The requirements for Lion are

Upgrading from snow leopard to mountain lion will i have trouble using my Pages and Iphoto since it's not the latest version

I am contemplating upgrading my OS from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Currently, I don't have ICloud available on my computer. I also keep getting messages to upgrade my IPhoto to '11 version as well as Pages. I know, I'm behind, but my theory is if it isn't broke don't mess with it.
My concern is I don't want to lose my pictures and YES, I have backed up with Time Machine to an external hard drive. (I just hope that's good enough). IF I upgrade to start using ML OS, will I need to restore anything from my external hard drive or will I be able to start using computer as if nothing changed?
I know enough to be dangerous and I'm hesitant to upgrade for fear of losing everything. Would appreciate help. Thanks!

My latest import photos are missing from my iphoto library but still on my ipad, how do I get them back into iphotos. I very frustrated because i just imported them from my camera and have not been able to go thru and edit the ones I want. Help please

My issue, which I resolved and may help you was the following:
I have an IPAD 3. I took over 5 GB of pictures on a third party camera. The car was full so I imported those pictures to my IPAD 3 and deleted them from the SD card. While on IOS 5.x, the photos on the IPAD were there under last imported.
Over the last few days, I upgraded to IOS 6. No issues.
Then, my family wanted to see the pictures from the trip. I went to the IPAD and could not find the photos. It listed 40 photos only. The last imported was there, but listed as empty. When I went into the settings>usage, it listed 5GB + of photos in the photos area. I was confused. I plugged my IPAD into ITUNES, first thinking I would get a backup asap (icloud was full after importing the photos). Then I though I would downgrade to IOS 5.
Also, itunes listed that I had 40 photos only, but 5GB of OTHER data. I was convinced the data was not lost. When I tried to browse the IPAD 3 using windows browser, the photos where NOT in the DCIM folder, so I was not able to simply "FIND" the photos and copy them to my PC.
-SOLUTION-
I downloaded third party software onto my PC called "http://www.i-funbox.com/" I fun box. I had no idea if this would work, but other forums with other issues called out similar products for iphone issues.
When I installed the program, which was free, and so far free of malware, I started to explore my IPAD file system.I found my photos, under IPAD>RAW file system>DCIM>100IMPRT.
-ROOT CAUSE-
I suspect when I upgraded to IOS 6, apple fails to register the IMPORT folder of photos as such, photos. So the file system in IOS looses sight of what is inside the last imported folder. Essentially removing them from applications such as "Photos". Why windows does not seem them, is beyond me. But the program I found did see them in raw format, and I was able to COPY them to my PC. Then I deleted them from the IPAD, because I had no other way of managing this folder in IPAD, and it was using a lot of space.

Adding multiple indesign pages into one manual

HELP, I am trying to make one big manual out of 60 different indesign files. How do I do this? I have been trying to find help on it without success. Can someone help me?

There are time one might need to actually combine documents, rather than use the book feature. To do this:
Open up the first and second documents (or as many as your computer will handle)
Make the second doc the active one.
Go to the Move menu on the Pages panel.
Choose all pages and select the first doc from the pop-up destination menu.
Click OK/Move.
Close second doc.
Save the first.
Repeat as needed in document order.

Is there a way to get Indesign data into a data file?

I am updating a catalog in InDesign. I would like to be able to get all of the data in the catalog in an external data file. This data file would have to be searchable, reportable and shareable. In essence I have customers who want access to the data for their web sites - some want all the data and some want only selected pieces. When I say data, I mean the pictures and all the text boxes too. Help!!!!

There are several plugins like smart catalog or easy catalog, but also others, which are linking InDesign content to a database, some in both directions, which means, changes done in InDesign are written to the DB and the other way too.

Having trouble getting Quicktime movies into iMovie

Hi everyone. I'm on an iBook with OS 10.3.9 and I'm working with Quicktime 7.0.3 and iMovie 4.0.1. I've been making a student film, and I've been trying to drag or import Quicktime movies into iMovie to edit and use. However, when I attempt to do so, it doesn't work and I get a message that reads, "Can't open file (insert file name here); skipping it and continuing." Is there any way to fix this problem without having to get Quicktime Pro? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty sure the files are indeed mpegs. I tried out the program you sent, and it worked for the first clip when I converted it into DV. For some reason, when I tried importing the next two mpeg movies, I got a message that said, "The DV File (insert name here) is the wrong video standard and cannot be imported into this project." Any reason why that should be happening? Thank you very much for your first reply.
