Trouble getting out sleep mode with external display

My 15" ALPB si connected in closed mode to a Viewsonic external monitor. When not used for a while, the Powerbook will of course get to sleep. But then there is no way to make it wake up again. Disconneting screen and other devices won't help. Only a restart will do, thereby losing all ongoing work. (BTW, never had this problem with a 12" ALPB also connected to the same type of display).
I know that by removing the monitor shutdown option in the energy saving preference panel it will dissapear. But I really need the display sleep option to work.
Someone experiencing this problem? Any solution?
Thanks. Mark

Thanks for your suggestion. That's actually a workaround I've used. The only problem is, the display isn't really put to sleep. The result: I still get an extended desktop and occasionally I "lose" my pointer. A bit annoying, but thus far the only solution I've come up with.

  • Extended desktop mode with external display

I use my Macbook with an external display. Sometimes I need to use extended desktop mode and sometimes I don't need the extra desktop space and prefer to work only with my external display. My needs change as I work throughout the day and I'm getting tired of having to close the Macbook to put it to sleep and then wake it up without opening the lid to just have one display (the external one).
I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a way to put the Macbook built-in display to sleep while continuing to work with the external display, without having to put the Macbook to sleep first. I'm thinking that there's got to be a way to do this (maybe there's a piece of software out there or some other work around?).

  • Solution for sleep issues with external display?

I had an Early 2011 Macbook Pro that worked quite well with an external display.  I now have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (bought 5 days ago, and running 10.10.3) that will not consistently work with the same external monitor.
I had it working yesterday for a few hours only if I left the MBP with the top open (both the MBP screen and external monitor stayed lit).  But, today it is back to freezing each time the monitor is connected to it.
    I have tried:
    1.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top open.  Results in the MBP screen now going dark and no signal being passed to the external monitor.  If the external monitor is disconnected, the MBP screens stays dark and the computer is unresponsive requiring a hard restart.
    2.  Connecting the external monitor to the MBP with the top closed.  Results in no signal being sent to the external monitor.  Disconnecting the external monitor and reopening the MBP yields, again, and unresponsive computer which requires a hard restart.
I have tried three different external monitors, all giving the same result.  The MBP is connect to external power, and I am running the latest OS (10.10.3).
Any suggestions before I return this to the Apple store in a rage?  :-)

    Hello there, Gaflin.
I'm sorry to hear you're having so much trouble getting your external display to work the way you are expecting with your new MacBook Pro. The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklist of steps for troubleshooting the issue you seem to be describing:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Using Closed lid, Extended Desktop, or Mirroring display modes
When using multiple displays, information can be presented in a number of ways. For more information and what modes are supported by your Apple product refer to:

  • How to stop sleep/hibernation with external display & lid down

What is the proper way to get my MBA to not sleep, hibernate, etc. when I have an external display attached and lid closed while watching a movie or webcast. In such a case I am not touching the mouse, trackpad, or keyboard.
I have bluetooth keyboard and usb wireless mouse attached.
I also disabled the sleep/poweroff options in the energy settings while watching.
The MBA still would go to sleep or something after 10 or 15 minutes of no agitation.
Also, the Monitor goes blank since their is not signal coming through to it.
Was this just not a use case that was thought through: Watch video stream with external monitor and lid closed? Make sure the MBA knows this scenario invalidates the powersave options????? And yes, the power was plugged.
    Thanks

Caffeine puts a little coffee cup icon at the top bar. Click to turn it off and on - it is on when the cup is dark, ie has coffee in it. However, this won't solve your problem - the MBA will still sleep with the lid closed. There are settings to allow use of an external monitor but what I did was download InsomniaX. This little free app keeps your computer from going to sleep when you close the lid. That way you can close the lid, walk down a hall or do something, then open the lid and keep working. Just don't forget it is on and leave the Mac too long or it will run out of battery.
Insomnia isn't in the App store, had to download it at http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/22211/insomniax

  • Sleep mode with external monitor

I've noticed that if I'm using my Macbook connected to an external monitor then sleep mode cannot be initiated by simply closing the lid.
The system starts to enter sleep then bounces out of that mode and remains running (with the dock having moved to the external screen)
Initiating sleep thru' the on/off button seems to work.
Isn't this what Beta versions are for?

    Hi Ruby326,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
This does sound like a very frustrating situation. I understand that your keyboard and trackpad not responsive after waking from sleep and you are forced to shut down to get them to respond. In this situation I would recommend resetting the computer’s PRAM and testing fresh. Please read over and follow the instructions for this process in the attached article.
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    Have a great day,

  • HT3131 Operating MBP in closed clamshell mode with external display

I have a new MBP retina display.  Trying to operate in a closed clamshell mode.  I connect a USB keyboard and a wireless mouse.  My external display is a Dell 2007FP display screen connected via a VGA adapter.  Whenever I close the computer lid to operate in clamshell mode the screen goes to sleep/power save mode.  Have tried various combinations of attaching keyboard and mouse first then screen, switching computer off on etc.  The external display states there is "no signal coming from computer"...any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciate

Congratulations on taking one more step in becoming more self sufficient in tech stuff.
But I have to wonder why you spent so much on a Retina display only to have it cooking uselessly there.

  • No Wireless Internet with External Display, Other Issues

    Hello,
When I connect an external monitor to my MBA, I lose my connection to the Internet. The wi-fi signal remains strong, but pages will not load (I tried many) and I cannot retrieve email. The connection times out when I try to ping as well. This occurs whether I have the MBA open or closed. The loss of Internet happens immediately when I connect an external display using the supplied dongle, and returns the moment I disconnect it. It is clearly an issue with external displays.
On the advice of an Apple Genius, I also tried disabling bluetooth. I did so, and turned off all my bluetooth devices (Apple keyboard and mouse, iPhone), but the problems persist.
The other trouble I am having is difficulty connecting to a network for the first time in a session. In other words, I was connected all day yesterday, take the MBA home, and return to the office the next day. MBA takes a long time to see the network, then fails to accept the password. If I carry the MBA closer to the wireless router, it finds and connects automatically as I'd saved my password. When I return to my desk, I remain connected with full signal strength. This has happened in two locations, one with an Airport Extreme, the other with a Netopia 802.11g router. When my Macbook Pro is sitting right next to the MBA, it recognizes and connects to the same networks almost instantaneously.
Anyone have any suggestions? Much appreciated.

Just a quick update... I was on the phone with Apple Support on Saturday morning and I thought we were making progress. The basic idea behind the proposed solution was that there was some "Preferences" that were causing the problem. We started over with a clean Preferences folder and tried connecting up the external monitor. At first, this approach was showing progress. The suggestion was to copy over my original Preferences (I had made a backup copy) just a few at a time until we figured out which ones caused the problem. The problem with this approach is that immediately after I got off the phone, the internet started not to work again. So, even with a clean Preferences folder, the internet would quit working after connecting up the external monitor.
So, I'm back to the drawing board. I have since restored my Preferences folder and I don't have my external monitor and internet working at the same time. BTW, I also upgraded to 10.5.3 and it didn't help.
    Still bummed,
    Kevin

  • Help with external displays

Just installed Lion and afterward I noticed that things work differently with external displays. In the past I could have my laptop open to mirror but now it must be  shut and the mirrior button or selection isn't available within the display preferences. So my question is, 1. does any one know how to better manage displays? and 2. does anyone know how to mirror while having the laptop screen open?
I know trhis sounds petty but where I work it is very hot and it seems like with the screen shut the computer syncs heat away a lot less efficiently.
    Thanks

    Thanks,
I now know how to turn on and off mirrioring with command/F1 (didn't know that yet), but would you know how I can use my external display in mirror mode with the laptop display completely turned off, not dimmed till black, but off?
Before lion I was able to do this by shutting the laptop screen which would put the machine  into sleep mode and then  by clicking the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard it would wake it. Once the external display came on then I would open the laptop and the laptop display would remain off while using the external display. Hope that makes sense. Any suggestions?

  • Using hdmi with external display crashes mac pro

I have late 2013 model Macbook pro. I have connected it via HDMI plug to external display via hdmi bridge. The other device connected to this hdmi bridge is a pc. Everything works fine until pc enters sleep mode, and switches display off. The result is immediate crash of my mbp either with reboot, or with screen requiring me to push power button long enough. Interestingly this problem seems not to appear if I am using this 30 bucks thunderbolt hdmi adapter. I am kind of infurious that my over 2 k MBP is crashing all the time. As the full-hd display works perfectly with PC, and with this extra adapter - what is the problem with my shiny premium MBP? anything to avoid this?

An articulating VESA mount and a cheap display or this Dell would be far simpler. The iMac G4 20" had to be specially weighted to hold just a 20" panel.
This Dell in particular has a host of display connectors that Apple doesn't offer on it's panels so multiple devices can be connected simultaneously:

  • Sony prs t2 sleep mode with showing picture

Dose sleep mode with selecting picture consume batt energy more than without showing one?
    Thank you verymuch
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for your question - actually it really shouldn't make any difference.  Battery power is consumed when an E ink display changes but not during the time the page itself is displayed, so matter what you have on the screen the power consumption should stay the same.

  • Prevent sleep mode with mbp 2011

how do I prevent my mbp 2011 to get into sleep mode when closing the lid.
I tried insomniaX, Caffein and lullaby but non of them worked!
    Thx in advance,
    Maik

What do you guys suggest for settings on the sleep mode, I've just got a new MBP and it goes dark quick when using off battery, slightly longer off mains, barely a minute or what seems like. Do you leave at factory settings or ??
I'm still at a loss with the calibrating instructions?
The battery time left changes every minute so never have any idea how much power/time is left?
This calibration method, after leaving for 2 hours in the green fully charged, when you unplug it do you have to leave it on till it turns itself off in one hit, overnight, or can you turn it off and just use it till it dies without charging it the next day when it runs down to 0%?
And what does this actually mean? You can only fully charge it twice a week? For my business use it will need charging every day
    *Do’s & Don’ts*
DO use your battery frequently and lightly, ideally completing 1-2 charge cycles per week (minimum one charge cycle per month).

  • IDE suddenly gets out of sync with dbx

I recently have seen a few cases where, during debugging sesions, the IDE gets out of sync with dbx: while sitting at a breakpoint, the debugger toolbar buttons suddenly are greyed out with the exception of the "Pause" button, as if the inferior process were running. A message "Process state modified" is displayed briefly in the status line at the bottom. I suspect this may be due to a problem with balloon evaluation, because somehow it seems to be triggered by cursor motion.
It is possible to "rectify" the situation by issueing a "next" in the dbx console, after this, the debugger toolbar buttons revert to their normal state.
I will try to narrow this down further. Is there anything I can do which could help to find the problem?
This happened with Sunstudio Express 07/08 as well as with 11/08.

I finally managed to reproduce this reliably. This was confusing at first because it does not only involve certain C++ code, but also the dbxenv variable output_dynamic_type.
This is indeed a balloon evaluation issue: If the mouse pointer hovers over an expression which involves an overloaded "operator->()", I usually get a balloon saying "<contains function calls>, which is okay. If I set "dbxenv output_dynamic_type on", I get the same output, but the toolbar switches somehow to "running" when the balloon pops up.
I can reproduce this with just a dozen lines of self-contained C++ code.
    I will report a bug at bugs.sun.com.
BTW: could anybody please set the timeout value for posts and replies in this forum to a reasonable value? This reply took me only a few minutes, but when i actually posted the message I got a timeout response...

  • Getting into Sleeping mode.

My MacPro(MacPro4.1) is getting into sleeping mode a lot, even while I'm burning CD or DVD after installing Mountain Lion.
    -- kaz-k

Lots of threads on here about intermittent wifi problems. For some it has been going on since before Lion was released and for others it seems to have started with the 10.7.3 upgrade. So far there doesn't seem to be a definitive fix and everyone is hoping that Apple will address the problem soon.
A couple of things you can try, but they are not guaranteed. Re-install the 10.7.3 update using the combo installer:
OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo)
If that doesn't help, some people found this helped:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/06/lion-wi-fi-problems-solution-mac/?utm_source=feed burner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+osxdaily+%28OS+X+Daily%29&utm_conten t=FaceBook
and if that doesn't help, quickly pressing the on/off button seems to re-establish connection (going by other threads on here). Don't press and hold the button as it will force the Mac to shutdown. Here's hoping that Apple are working on a fix.
