Trouble importing files because "files are already in Catalog"

First off, I am using Elements Organizer (v 10).  There are certain folders that I can access in the Folders View but they are empty according to Organizer.  If I switch to Windows Explorer, these same folders have lots of images in them.  When I attempt to "Import to Elements Organizer", I get a message indicating "the files are already in this Catalog".
Any ideas?

When you install Lightroom on a new system, and start it, a default empty catalog is created if you don't point Lightroom to an existing catalog. In your case, you could have either:
1. Copied your catalog over, install Lightroom, then start it by double-clicking on that copied catalog. No empty "default" catalog is created, you've told Lightroom where the catalog is that you want it to use.
2. Or you could start Lightroom, new empty catalog is created, do File>Open Catalog, select the copied catalog, after it opens go to the Preferences menu>General Tab and make sure the copied catalog is selected in the Defaulf Catalog section, then delete that empty default catalog.
Absolutely no need whatsoever to use "Import from another Catalog" in that situation.

    Hi Jody414,
Use the Acrobat Cleaner tool ( Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs ) to remove Reader completely from the machine.
Download Reader 11 from: Adobe - Adobe Reader Distribution   and install and check.

  • I am suddenly unable to open images in the organiser of ape11 and get the "the files are already in the catalogue"

When I click on the items in the folder i receive the message "no media to display".   The images are in the hard drive.   I tried to download previously imported images, clicked "get media" and got the "nothing imported... the files are already in this catalogue" message.   I then took a new photograph, downloaded it to the organiser and it appeared in the Folders List - clicked on the item and again got "no media to display" .   Help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
That sounds as though you have a filter applied - perhaps a star rating search.
On the View menu select Media Types and ensure that all are checked. Also under the View menu select Hidden Files and ensure Show All Files is checked.
If that doesn't display your files, see if there is a All Media button at the top - click on that and then your folder.
If still no success, try closing the organizer and opening it again.

Make sure that Develop Settings being applied during import is set to "None".

  • E-edition freezes up with 1A.pdf The max. number of files are already open no other files can be opened or printed until some are closed , showing four of five and computer froze any I must close by shutting down manually.

My online E-Edition newspaper will freeze up after loading the front page and gives me the message that the max. number of files are already open and no other files can be printed or opened until some are closed. 1A.pdf. When you click ok it repeats itself and you have to force shutdown by holding off button. I'm totally stumped.

I have read that "1000" is default maximum for Acrobat 4 or Acrobat 5 (I don't remmember it exactly anymore). Concerning my PC and RAM. I have a high-end graphical computer at my office; so I'm sure the RAM memory is not the reason.
    Anyway, thanks for answer.

  • Importing files are too big

Whenever I try to import my cds onto iTunes, in the bottom bar it says that the file will be about 500 MB. I know this isn't right because whenever I import on a PC or another MAC, it shows up at about 30 MB. My iTunes preferences are set on AAC, which I hear is suggested. I don't know what else to do...

It does make sense. You are probably importing your tunes in Apple Lossless or AIFF. You need to check your import settings.
    1. Open iTunes Prefs > Advanced > Importing.
    2. Make sure the "Import Using" is set to either AAC or MP3, whichever you prefer.
    3. Click OK.
Now you probably need to make sure your existing files are transcoded.
    1. Pull down Edit > View Options and click the Kind check box.
    2. Sort your Library by the Kind column by clicking on it.
    3. Highlight all the files that are not AAC or MP3.
    4. Control+click the files and choose "convert selection to XXX."
Once that is done you can then delete the Lossless/AIFF files.

  • Trouble Importing Files PSE 7 to Windows 7 (32 bit)

I am attempting to install PSE 7 into a computer running Windows 7, 32 bit.
The installation was a success to the extent that I was able to connect a catalog containing a huge amount of photos, (180,000 +) to the organizer, and after several hours of "generating thumbnails" the installation seemed to have stabilized.
However, when I try to import new photos, the "get photos from files and folders" operation takes ridiculous amounts of time, and is sort of "hit or miss" in that it sometimes it hangs altogether and I have to use "task manager" to shut down PSE.
Other than this, the program seems to be working normally (!) or maybe (?)
I have tried various compatibility modes, (XP SP2, Vista, Vista SP 1 & 2) with very little difference in results. Well, maybe Vista SP 2 was a tiny bit better.
The computer this is installed in is a Pentium C2D 2.8Ghz (E6300) w/ 2 GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM. So, it's got plenty of "juice" to deal with PSE's requirements.
My photo files are stored in folders & sub-folders on a separate internal HDD (750GB WD).
Both PSE 5 and 7 work on 3 other computers containing the identical catalogs and photos, in basically the same configuration, including separate storage drives for each. These machines are running Windows XP SPs 2 or 3 (I use multiple computers as a back up strategy, copying the entire existing HDD to another, then install the drive into another machine, import the catalog file into PSE, and change the HDD letter to match that of the existing catalog). Done this way, the PSE installation is identical to that in the previous machine, and is up and running rapidly.
launching such  a large catalog takes a bit of time to initialize, or search (understandably), but on these other machines there is no trouble importing, locating, or managing files.
I should add that on the Windows 7 machine, Windows Explorer works quite well in accessing all of the photo files, so this sort of rules out a problematic Hard drive.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Ellis, PSE 7 is simply not permitting me to drag folders from Windows Explorer into the organizer. It just blows up the dreaded "black circle with diagonal slash", and that's the end of the issue, at least as far as PSE 7 is concerned.
Since I've had to terminate this program abnormally several times, it resets the preferences upon restart. The other day it hung when I was trying to set preferences, so as you might expect, I'm very cautious about making changes. I don't know if changing any preferences would enable drag and drop, I'm just trying to illuminate the eggshells I'm walking in trying to stabilize the program.
In answer to your question, about the "documents and settings folder", no, I'm not using in any of my photo file paths. I realize I may have confused the issue with that statement, it was out of context. But my purpose in doing so was to obviate the differences in file paths that PSE is expecting, and the file paths that I'm using. Perhaps that was a bad example.
I almost never use either the "My Documents" or the My Pictures" folders in Windows, nor do I allow PSE to use them. Storing data of any kind on the OS drive (C:/) is not in my repertoire of "stupid things I like to do, even if they're destined to end badly".
All of my computers have a minimum of 2 physical HDDs, not partitions. All video, music, photos, program installer files, etc. are stored on a discreet, separate, HDDs, (identified in "My Computer" as, (IE) " G: Volume")). The "C:/" drives are exclusively for Windows and installed programs.
That said, a typical file path to a group of photos in my computer would be, "My Computer" > "G:/ Volume" > "My Digital Photos" > "Airshows" > "McGuire AFB 2007" (In case you're wondering, I'm way too lazy to go through that each time, so I add desktop shortcuts to the extra HDDs and even the largest folders).
As you are well aware, that is completely different from the file path that PSE would choose by default. A file path for which I have a great deal of disdain. But, that is another complicated and contentious issue, which doesn't have a clear winner thus far.
Anyhoo, I think that PSE would "appear" more compatible (and probably is )with Windows 7 if it were allowed to follow it's own choices as to where to store the photo files. One supposes the folders that Windows 7 "creates" for earlier programs further aids (supposed) compatibility.
As I mentioned in one of my other somewhat long winded posts, I now have a viable option for importing photos, "find photos by searching", the manual drill down modus operandi. Works great!
I'm not expecting this installation of PSE to do any, "heavy lifting" with respect to editing, or a resting place for un-backed up photos . It's in a new machine I just built for the primary purpose of, extra backup,  recording TV, and perhaps installing a Bluray drive. The motherboard has HDMI output, so it plugs into the TV directly, and the PSE slideshow function works perfectly.  With a 40" TV, it's even better than a slide projector for boring relatives with vacation photos!
So, although this thread is still marked as "unanswered", I do have a workaround solution. There should be a check box indicating, "it won't ever be answered until Adobe issues a patch"! (Like that's going to happen).
Again Mr. Ellis, thank you very much for your interest in this issue. I might add that I have read your page on problems with PSE and it's obvious that you have applied a great deal of thought, effort, experience, and industry toward helping people deal with PSE more effectively.
As an afterthought I have several copies of PSE laying around, 2,3,5, & 7, (some in multiples) and I've never had a serious problem with any of them. So I'm actually astounded when I see the litany of issues that apparently manifest themselves. This is my first actual issue, and Windows 7 is pretty upfront about PSE 7 being an incompatible application.

  • FCP X freezes and must force quit?  I have a FCP installed on a Mac Mini (4 gig memory) and Lion OS.  The import files are large ACVHD files from a Canon G10 camera.  FCPX freezes and requires a force quit.  Is anyone else having these problems?

I am using FCP X on both a MacMini (10.7 with 4 Gig memory) and an iMac (10.6 with 4 gig memory).  The files are ACVHD files imported from a Canon G10 camcorder.  FCP is constantly freezing and requiring a forced quit.    Could it be that FCP X was not tested thoroughly for use on a Mac Mini?

I think it's safe to say that FCPX wasn't tested throroughly for use on anything.
with that out of the way, there are many variables as to what might cause your problems, but I don't think it's the mac mini as long as it meets the specified minimum requirements (especially the graphics card).
You might try creating a camera archive first and then importing from that.
The other issue might be the file format itself; you might need to use Clipwrap first. Maybe someone who has the same camera can chime in.

  • Trouble Importing files to Pro CS3 and also getting default workspace

Hi guys, I'm a newbie and only using Premiere CS3 3.2.0 (with update recently installed) I'm on a Vista-based laptop, 2.5Ghz, 4mb RAM, plenty of hard drive space.
When I start a new project in Premiere CS3, in the New Project window, I go down to XDCAM EX, (shot with Sony EX 3), and highlight 1080p. Usually I get text in the description box but right now I'm not getting anything. And when I give the project a name and click OK, I get a blank workspace; no default timeline bin or file bin or monitor windows. I get nothing.
I have files on an external 250gig IOMEGA hd. Having trouble importing these files into the project. Can anyone help with any ideas of how to get started? Thanks!
UPDATE: I'm still getting a blank workspace when opening up a new project.
I have since attempted to import files from the external HD. It appears the files transferred over but I have no idea where they went. I saw the bar accept the files but cannot find the files listed anywhere in Premiere. Can someone please help?

OK, this used to work. Is that correct? Now it does not, or appears to not work. When that happens, something has changed.
The task will be to determine what might have changed. Have you had any OS updates lately? First, these can render display drivers obsolete instantly. Though it sounds like most of your GUI is displaying fine, some updated GUI info might not be, like the Timeline and Project Panel. Check to see if you have the latest display driver.
Since you have updated to 3.2 (normally a highly recommend thing to do), I would be interested to know if this behavior started before that update, or if it started long after 3.2 worked for you. Redoing the update might be like a Repair Install. If not, I think that I would try a Repair Install to see if something has been broken along the way.
I know that none of this really points to a cause, and probably does not point to a cure.
Along the way, tell us more about your entire system, both the hardware and the software.
Last, do you happen to have Window Blinds, or have a MS mouse with an InteliPoint mouse driver? I know that sounds like a weird question, but I have my reasons.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Speed of Lightroom with files on network attached storage if preview files are already generated

I'm trying to figure out if it's practical to use Lightroom to access/manipulate files on network attached storage.
Specifically, suppose I've already generated the 1:1 preview files, and these preview files are on the local hard drive.  Does it matter then if the raw files are located physically on a NAS v. on the local hard drive in terms of the speed of Lightroom and ease with navigating from image to image?

    Andrew,
Unfortunately the catalogs can have multiple issues when saved over network due to lot of network variables.
The same is covered under Lightroom FAQ's as below:
Can I store my catalog on a network?
No. There are too many variables in a network configuration to guarantee that the catalog won't get corrupted.

  • I am having trouble importing files from file sharing in the same household.  I have followed the tutorials but do not have the tab at the bottom of Itunes "Import to library"

When I go to file sharing on Itunes, I am unable to import files to my itunes.  I can play them, but am unable to move them to my library.  I have been through the tutorial and when I get to "show menu at the bottom of library" there is no menu.  I do not have the tab "items not in my library" or "import"   I have been through the upper tab and see no option in the view menu and have also consolidated the files.  Any suggestions?

Error code -36 is an i/o error. That usually means that the computer is having a problem reading or writing the file you're working with, which in turn usually means that the drive has a problem. A sudden slowdown of the magnitude you meantion usually means a severely damaged directory or physical damage to the disk. I'd run a disk fixer such as Disk Utility or Disk Warrior on the slow drive. If it reports problems which can't be fixed, which I suspect it will, I'd back everything up. I just had a LaCie 250GB drive die on me with similar problems (i/o errors, very slow access) and returned it under the warranty.

  • I am having trouble importing files to LR 5.6.

As usual, I plug the camera in [Nikon D810] and the photos automatically import. The following day, LR says there are no photos to load. Also Preview Unavailable comes up! What's up LR???

Thanks. I tried all of my cameras to see if any issues with importing was the same. All cameras and USB cords are different, but still LR cannot import photos. There are a few blank previews that show up, but they will not import.

  • Imported files are really blurry and pixelated?

Help! I'm freaking out a bit over here.
I designed several pages from a book and a magazine in Photoshop (text, images, graphics and all) and am now trying to import them into an InDesign document to send to the printer. I import them the proper way, by going through File > Import. I created everything at 300 ppi.
However, once they're in InDesign, everything is really pixelated! I changed the Display Performance to High and it gets a little better, but still pixelated. Is this just a quirk of InDesign? When the pages are printed, will they look unpixelated? If not, how do I fix this? I'm working on a deadline, so quick advice would be much appreciated.

No, I'm not rasterizing anything. I save the PSD as is, with the text still live, and then place them in InDesign - I didn't know everything was rasterized anyways! The document looks a lot better when I import the PSDs into Illustrator, save as an .ai file, and then place them into InDesign. I've also made all the PSDs exactly to scale in Photoshop, so I don't scale anything up or down in ID.
But the PDF trick works perfectly! Everything actually looks perfect now. Thanks so much!
    1. PSD will always ALWAYS output as RASTER. It's a conversion that happens on the fly and there's nothing InDesign nor Photoshop can do about it. The only way around it is to save the file as PDF.
    2. Absolutely unnecessary step - same end result as placing them in InDesign. It may look better because the ai file will have a PDF for previewing in InDesign, which may show up slightly better than a low-res thumbnail that Indesign uses for previewing.
    3. The PDF would be better - the text layers, vector masks and vector shapes created in Photoshop would retain their vectorness. Anything else, like smart objects, would be rasterised in the PDF to the native res of the file.
    Daniel Flavin wrote:
From what I've read, you may not have done any work in InDesign excepting to import the Photoshop pdf's to create one final document.
This forum could discuss at lengths end the merits of InDesign vs Photoshop for multilple page documents...let's not right now.
If your Photoshop PDF's were final page files, with nothing added in ID, you would have been better off combining the 50 page files in Acrobat; ID was a hurdle in this case.
    Absolutely 90% agree with this.
Technically it would have been more efficient to use InDesign to create the multipage layout. Photoshop PDFs can be quite large, especially when retaining layers for future editing, which can bloat the file. And a larger size file size takes longer to send via email, upload to FTPs etc. and longer to RIP.
By placing the PDFs in InDesign and outputting to PDF from there they may have significantly reduced the overall size of the PDF, which would be beneficial.
