Trouble importing movies to iMac

Im trying to import movies from a Sony Handycam, but am getting an error message of an unsupported file type.  Should MPEG files be converted to MP4 before being imported?  Can this be done while on the Handycam or will I need to download to a PC and then attempt importing to iMac?  Thanks for any help.

What Sony Handycam?
What Mac, running what version of OS X and iMovie?

  • Trouble Importing MOV files in adobe premiere pro cs3

    Hi,
I just bought a Canon 60D camera and I am using adobe premiere pro cs3 for the first time.
I tried to import MOV file footages made by my Canon 60D, but it says that my files are not supported.
I don't know what to do!
    Can someone help me?
    Thank you.

    Hi All,
Let me tell you how I solved the XDV9 codec trouble on my Windows 7 system. The solution is rather stunning because I am using completely free software. First download the Shark007 codec pack for your system here: http://shark007.net/forum/Thread-Setup-and-usage . Please be aware that the codec pack installer comes with a toolbar install option so make sure you de-select this option during the installation process. After installation check the MOV tab on the "Settings Application" program. Make sure "use LAV's splitter" is selected for MOV Playback.
Now comes the crazy part... To convert the XDV9 MOV video clips just download Windows Essentials Movie Maker for Windows 7. At this moment more info about this program can be found here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started . Again, make sure to set the right settings during installation otherwise you will be installing a lot of possible unwanted crap like Windows Live Mail, Windows Skydrive etc.
Movie Maker has quite good settings for converting (High Definition or custom settings are supported). Select your clip, or select multiple clips to create an unedited full length clip of all your clips, and then select "create movie". I used the "use recomended settings for this project" settings as it matches the source file resolution and frame rates etc. It is quite some work to convert clips like this but its the only free solution I could find so far.
    Good luck!

  • Presenter 10 - trouble importing movie

Anyone else have trouble importing a  movie file using Presenter? I know that movie files need to be inserted via the Presenter tab right?
I've tried both an .avi and .mov file and get an error "There was an error encoding the file".
    Thanks for the help.

Do you have another program that can encode the videos to FLV or MP4 before you bring them into Presenter? I've never found the conversion tool in Presenter terribly useful. Maybe it is the loss of control, but I prefer to have more options than Low, Medium and High when converting my videos.
If the videos are converted elsewhere, then it will remove the converter in Presenter from the process, and should work around this problem.

  • Trouble importing movie into iMovieHD

I'm having trouble importing a video into iMovie HD. Here's the message I get when attempting to do so: "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Edd/Movies/ITI videos/don keehotay- Otto's 2.15.09” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -1409".
the file name and extension are, "don keehotay- Otto's 2.15.iMovieProject".
Any ideas on what I can do to get this to work?

Hi dupedd - it is an mpg file. iMovie HD needs DV formatted material. What was the source of your file?
You will need to convert it, using:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/

  • Trouble importing movie directly to external hard drive

I have an externall hard drive that I purchased for the purpose of starting an iMovie project on it and then importing movies directly from my camera onto it (via my iMac). I have read on the discussion boards that other people are able to do this. When I try to do it, the movie stutters and has gaps.
I traded out fire wires in case it was that. I also erased the external hard drive and that didn't help either.
The hard drive is an OWC with 400 fire wire on it. Any ideas of what would cause this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

I have a canon zr 50, which worked fine before the upgrade to tiger and imovie HD, since the upgrade this camera no longrer works or is supported? http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/camcorders.html the zr 40, and 45 are supported which are the same camera but the top of the line zr 50 which only adds an accesory shoe is not. This camera is not old by any standards and barely has a scratch on it and Apple wants me to buy a new camera just so it is supported? What gives?

  • Trouble importing movies.

My macbook no longer recognizes my video camera. I have come to realise it was not on the list of compatable cameras.
I will be trading in my camera shortly, the problem Im having is getting the remaining movies off my camera and into Imovie.
A friend of mine downloaded the movies from my video camera to his PC. I then used an 8 GB thumb drive and dragged as many of the movies into as i could. When i put the thumb drive in my mac, it recognized it right away and all went according to plan. When this was done i couldnt get the movies to erase so i re-inserted the thumb drive in the PC and reformated it.
I then dragged the remainder of the movies onto the thumb drive. Once i reinserted the thumb drive into the Mac, it would no longer recognize it and the files were suddenly on the thumb drive as MPG's instead of MOV. I have no idea what happened.
After being very frustrated i tried to download a mpeg file from apple with no success.
Does anyone have any idea what i've done or what i could do to fix this problem

    Hi G
As Forest writes. Your alternative is:
    • to get a FireWire miniDV tape Camera
    • try iMovie'08 (doubtfull - test in an Apple Store)
    with a quality sacrifice:
    • import from Your DVDs BUT to do this You need a program that can convert back
to streamingDV that iMovie and FCE/P uses (see below)
    • Buy an analog to digital box like a CANOPUS ADVC 55, 110 or 300 and import
via analog (video) out on the Camera
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your iMac iBook or ProBook. You need a trayloaded DVD to do this.
    B. Read what Karsten collected:
    DVD back to iMovie:
.. and here the complete 'full 9 yards' ... :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3822853&#3822853

for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in
recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    • DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    • Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    • VisualHub (23.32$)
    • Cinematize >60$
    • Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    • Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    • connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

  • Having trouble importing .MOV files

I have a Canon EOS 60D which shoots video clips with a file extension of .MOV.  I have Premier Elements Vers.8.0 and when I try to import the clips, it errors out and says it doesn't support .MOV files or Codec is missing...I'm not even sure what that means.  Is there a fix for this?  Please let me know, thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
If that MOV "wrapper" contains the MJPEG CODEC, and Steve will know, then you might be able to install the Canon MJPEG CODEC, which should be included with the camera's utility disc. It might be a separate installation, but more likely installed with the camera's driver, or, most likely, along with a Canon editing, or cataloging utility, such as ZoomBrowser. Even if one does not use that utility, having the proper CODEC installed might allow PrE to edit the material. Using the version of MJPEG that the camera maker uses, is the ideal, as most mfgrs. tweak the MJPEG CODEC a bit, so a commercial version of MJPEG may not work effectively. See this ARTICLE for more details. See this ARTICLE for more general info on CODEC's. This ARTICLE goes into more detail on Video formats, as "wrappers."
Good luck, and I hope that with the installation of the Canon MJPEG CODEC, PrE will be able to edit the material.

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP X

I'm relatively new to FCP so this could be a really easy fix. I took a bunch of short video clips (20s --> 1.5 min) on my Panasonic ZS25 and imported the clips to my MacBook Pro (2008 with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor). [I have version 10.8.4 of OSX]. The clips from my camera were in .mts format so I used the Smart Convertor Pro App from the App Store to convert all 80 files to a .mov format. Both the converted clips and FCP X are stored on my 700 GB external, and while I tried to import the clips into FCP X, the program almost immediately froze and shut down. Thinking I "overloaded" (for lack of a better word) FCP X, I decided to try and delete the blank clips that were showing up in the program. However each time I attempted to click on a clip the program crashed again. I eventually was able to delete all the clips, and decided to move the converted clips from my external to my desktop. Once they were moved I then tried to import just one clip from the desktop to FCP X (which is still run through my external). Although it was successfully imported, once I clicked on the file to play it in FCP X the program crashed again.
What can possibly be the problem and what can I do to fix it?
Note: This is my first time using both my new camera (and having to deal with this .mts BS) as well as FCP X.

Thanks Russ, Tom, and Hughmass for all your input. It really is appreciated. Unfortunatly even after moving FCPX to my desktop and converting the .mov files in MPEGstreamclip, importing the movie clips into the program still causes random shut downs. Perhaps the clips are corrupted or something? I honestly don't know, and I'd rather kind of just ignore this problem then keep hashing away seeing as the clips aren't that important (and yes, being super smart, i deleted them off the camera well before hand).
Just to make sure FCPX works, I took some short clips on my Panasonic DMCZS25, and imported them successfully into FCPX and was able to edit together a quick piece. Thanks again for all your help!

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP...

Hello, all. Hope someone can help me solve this problem.
I just installed Final Cut Pro on my machine, much to my delight, and immediately set about attempting to edit a video project I was commissioned for. However, I quickly stumbled into a big problem: the files I'm attempting to edit (all .mov format) refuse to import properly into FCP. Despite the fact that they play flawlessly in Quicktime, when imported to FCP, they require an inordinate render time when placed in a sequence and, what's worse, do not render properly. The picture jumps frames in the preview, and, once rendered, a red flash is introduced in place of the missing frames, generating a seizure-inducing mess that is already giving me quite a headache.
How can I fix this problem? I am open to the idea of file conversion, but don't understand why .mov won't work. I've searched the Internet for answers and found little to no information on how to solve this. Please help!

My problem, every single movie file that i import will show red in FCP, no exception.
That means that you are brining in QT file types that FCP does not work with natively.
I cant imagine what file/codec type FCP is designed for but I tried files from my phone, two different video cams and two different still cams with video option.
FCP is designed to work with professional cameras, and a slew of consumer types. It is NOT suited for raw cel phone video, and most video types that point and shoot cameras record. For those cameras you need to convert the footage to the type that FCP works with. If you look in the EASY SETUPS in the Final Cut Pro menu, you will see the codecs that FCP works with.
ALL of these BTW, work in imovie.
Because it is meant to be used with consumer formats. But note, it converts a lot of the footage to an Apple codec in the background...or does rendering in the background to a uniform codec. It is designed for people who just want to drop footage in and go. But lacks many professional attributes. BUT, if it works, use that.
Is it just a fact of life that I have to get all types of video codec conversion software to be able to use FCP with typical video files?
Just one...MPEG STREAMCLIP. Convert everything to DV/NTSC.
Or get Adobe Premiere Pro. It is designed to work with files natively.

  • Trouble importing .mov from Aiptek Action HD

I just got the action hd camera (and am new to FCE).
The camcorder's files are .mov files, recording in 720p60fps - format H.264 Decoder, 1280 x 720, Millions of colors, AAC, Stereo, 48.000 kHz
Is it possible to import these files? I keep getting error messages as I try to import/capture/log and transfer these files into fce.

Are you talking about the Aiptek Action HD? This camera uses a proprietary format not support by FCE. You need to convert the media using MPEG Streamclip to the Apple Intermedia Codec at 720p at 29.97 with uncompressed audio at 48K.

  • Trouble importing movie

After browsing through the discussion multiple times, I realized that I can obtain reliable answers to my problems. I used to be able to create home movies relatively easily after I imported and burnt them using the Pinnacle software on my PC. Then, I followed the tips I've found on this site and imported the non-zero VOBs into a folder and used iSquint to convert them.
Since I've been having difficulties with the Pinnacle software (the audio loves to drop out after awhile, I've relentless pursued a solution, but could find no easy one), I decided to purchase a DVD/VCR combo that will allow me to "dub (or transfer video from a VHS to a DVD and vice-versa)" The Model is a Samsung DVD-VR375. I have no problems transferring, however, I've noticed that iSquint won't convert the first VOB I want it to (yes, it's a non-zero and yes, I transferred it to a file that's NOT on my desktop). It states that it does not have the necessary codecs. It will convert every other file, but it wont, for some reason, be able to ever convert the first few minutes of any movie that I make.
Sorry for the long post, but I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me with my problem. Thanks!

    "Is Streamclip "better" than iSquint?"
I think iSquint is pretty basic. It's the baby sibling to that company's featured app called Visual Hub, which costs a small amount.
Here's a blub I found about Streamclip...maybe more than you wanna ingest:
It is a free utility that bridges the gap between multiplexed and QT content, as well as, a mini-editor and converter in much the same manner as QT Pro. Basically it accesses the QT structure now embedded in OS X and adds a few other useful features like cropping & centering; adjusting volume levels, contrast, brightness, saturation; blending frames when reducing frame rate; an advanced scaler; batch processing; etc. In addition, it will convert MPEG-1 content to QT compression formats while retaining audio and will do the same for MPEG-2 content if the QT MPEG-2 Playback component is installed. In fact, it will access all QT compenents including those from third-party providers. And, while it does not handle the layering capabilities of QT Pro, it does complement the capabilities of QT Pro and is a valuable asset for the general video enthusiast.

  • Trouble importing .mov into Final Cut Express

I have a number of video clips given to me by a client in Italy and provided as .mov files. I can view them in Quicktime with no problem. I want to edit them. I have Final Cut Express 4 and when I import the files, I can see the file listed, I can hear the audio play but I can't see the video. Is this a conversion problem of some sort? Do I need to convert it first into a different format — if so, what format and what conversion software do you recommend (I tried a couple of free ones to no avail).
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi everybody,
I've solved the problem by installing Final Cut 6 (latest version): when drag and drop the clip, the settings instantly suit to the clip properties (making rendering un-necessary).
The images are still stretched but, when I deselect "Show as Sq. Pixel" from the first of those 3 menus on the canvas display, images suddenly appear exactly as I wanted (even the images quality is exactly the same as the source).
Now the problem is Compressor (still latest version):
I've tried to convert with a lot of presets, but images are still vertically stretched and images are not as clear and sharp as the source.
    Which is the right preset??
    Thank you!

  • Trouble importing .mov files coming from FCP/Mac

    Hello,
My friend works on Final Cut Pro on Mac. He gave me rushs from vidéos he imported (and the exported) on FCP.
An example of these files is here :
    https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B9S9yK830UrNM2QyZTBhYWEtYjM2NC00NWNiLThiZTktOWQwZGNjNzY1O GMz&hl=fr
There are several file sizes 1280 / 720 and others.
Codecs are : Codec : MPEG-1/2 Video (xdva)
Codec : PCM S16 LE (sowt)
I can read the files with VLC on my computer.
When I import the files on Premier Pro CS5... it crashes the program.
I went through the forums... tried to download more codecs via Klite Codec Pack. I also installed Calibrated(Q) XP Options... but i'm not sure i used it right.
In the end, I am unable to do anything... and I am extremely frustrated, and MAD at Apple and it's never-compatible formats.
    Anyone can help ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I downloaded your file and I can also confirm that it freezes both PremierePro CS5 and CS5.5. It just freezes when trying to create peak file.
I also have Calibrated(Q) XP Options.
Quicktime Pro tells that it is XDCAM-EX 720p50 1280x720
With Quicktime Pro you can export it to other format, I tried Avid DNxHD 720p/50 and Premiere opened it nicely.
    But 300 files...

  • Importing movie files created with SONY HDR-TG5

Having trouble importing movie files created with this camera. Have had success importing direct from the camera using streamclip, but struggling with old files imported from our PC. These files have these two extensions; .modd and .m2ts

    Eric:
Thank you. MPEG Slipstream worked great.
Do you know if there is software available that would let me see what is in/copy the files in the Sony folder so that I might be able to copy the disk directly instead of having to copy the files off of it with Handbrake? Would having the QT add-on for the MPEG-2 playback component be helpful?
    Thanks again
