Trouble installing 10.4.3 combo update

I'm trying to install the 10.4.3 combo update on my G5. My HD has the exclamation point over it & I get the "You cannot install Mac OS X Update on this drive" message.
I read some previous posts and I made sure I downloaded the correct update - not the 10.4.3 Server update. I haven't made any modifications to my system and I don't have any anit-virus software.
Help!
Diane
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4)

Here is the update you want:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1043combo.html
Make sure to repair permissions with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility before and after.
Dismount and disconnect any third party peripherals you have before updating.
If it doesn't work, try creating a secondary user in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts with Admin access and logging in to it to see if the update doesn't like something installed in the current user.

  • 20 inch Aluminum iMac crashes after installing Mac OS X Combo Update 10.5.6

I have a school lab with 22 of the new 20 inch Aluminum iMacs. They all have been having a problem with crashing after someone logs onto my network server, which is still running the 10.4 Tiger version of the Apple server. They run fine if you boot up and log on as a local user, and they seem to run fine when you boot up and log on to with a server account, but when you log off from the server, about five seconds later while the aurora screen is still showing, they crash and give you the Apple version of the "blue screen of death."
I was told that the fix was to download the combo update separately from the Apple website and use that to reinstall and update the operating system.
I downloaded and tried installing with a 10.5.6.dmg file and a 10.5.6.dmg.smi file, but they both crashed.
Where can I find the "fixed" version of this update or is there some other fix?
I have tested this on 9 or 10 different systems.
The first file was MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg, which is a disk image file that is 668.8 MB or 684,774 KB.
I looked in the discussion groups on the Apple web site and found some discussions for problems that seemed similar to, but not quite the same as my own. They led me to a file MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg.smi, which a self mounting image file that is also 668.8 MB. I tried it and got the same result.
I can install my dvd, which gives me 10.5.1, which will log off and reboot correctly.
I can then install several miscellaneous upgrades:
    Pro Apps Update 2006-02 V1.0
    AirPort Utility V5.3.2
    Remote Desktop Client V3.2.2
    QuickTime V7.6
    iTunes V8.0.2
    and also
    Front Row V2.1.6
The system will then log onto the network, log off and reboot correctly.
But, when I install the 10.5.6 combo update from any of my sources, it boots and logs on fine. But, if I log onto the network, it crashes when I log off.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks for your help.

Have you tried starting up with your install disk and doing a disk repair?
Put the install disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. You can take your finger off once you hear it making noises from the DVD/CD drive. You'll be presented with a screen where you choose your language. At the next screen on the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility you then select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it makes any changes click on 'repair disk' again and repeat the process until you get a clean pass. Once done select restart from the Apple menu and hopefully the Mac will boot normally.

  • Installing 10.4.9 combo update

    hi,
nice to be here as a newbie...
i'm trying to install 10.4.9 as a combo update (can't use software updater cos running pro tools, etc). download of pkg file is ok, but when i run the installer it hits an error half way through downloading and stops.
only reason i can think of is that i started installing it through software updater a few months ago but stopped halfway through the process. so i'm wondering whether there's half a malformed update somewhere on my system that's preventing the shiny new combo update from installing properly.
any ideas? if that sounds likely, no idea how to fix it or where to look for and delete half-downloaded files...
    thanks in advance,
    nick

*…can't use software updater cos running pro tools, etc.*
AFAIK, that shouldn't preclude using Software Update.
*download of pkg file is ok, but when i run the installer it hits an error half way through downloading and stops*
That's confusing. First, you say the download was OK, then you say that you run the installer and the download halts. If you've downloaded the install package, then installing it shouldn't require any downloading.
*…I'm wondering whether there's half a malformed update somewhere on my system*
Possibly. What's in your download folder? If the package is there, delete it, and download it again. Also consider installing the 10.4.10 COMBO update, instead. You should also check your /Library/Receipts/ folder for MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.9PPC.pkg. If it exists, delete it and try reinstalling.
BTW, you mentioned being a newbie. Is that to using Macs? If so, see my post at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5125089 which points to transition documents.

  • Having trouble installing the 10.5.3 update

For some reason, my Macbook won't install the next Mac OSX update, It'll restart and bring up the screen and just stay at the "Configuring INstallation" Screen for hours,
    How do I fix this?

Can you please clarify - are you able to start up your system and login - or not?
As I recall, the configuring installation screen comes up when you are running the install from Software Update - after logging in successfully.
_*If that is the case*_ - then you simply need to delete everything in yourharddrive/Library/Updates/ and run Software Update again. It will then work.
Alternatively (after deleting whatever is in /library/updates/), you could manually [download and run the combo installer from Apple|http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1053comboupdate.html].
_*On the other hand*_, if you can't start up and login successfully, the instructions provided by Simon are spot on.

  • Has anyone else had trouble installing the new Apple TV update?

I have tried several time to install the new software for my Apple TV, but each time I am getting a message saying the intall was unsuccessful.  I have 2 and it installed on the older Apple TV (non-HD version) but the newer set will not install the update.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
If when you choose restore you get a message that the device cannot be found, download the file below
Apple TV Software Restore 5.1.1 (2nd generation)
Then hold down the option key while choosing restore and select the downloaded file when prompted.
If you have the Apple TV 3, use the following file.

  • Error when installing 10.6.3 Combo update

    Hi,
I wondered if anyone can help me. I have Snow Leopard running on my new this year iMac 21". Software Update had been working fine until April when the 10.6.3 update came out. The update downloaded but when it tries to install it Validates and then Writes to disk, but then when the progress bar is about a half of the way across I get an error saying that it could not install. "The installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." I have tried this several times with exactly the same message. I have tried downloading the update manually and installing from Mac OS but I get the same error message just in a nicer Application Install window!
    Any suggestions?

I hope you have a valid back-up or even better a Time Machine back-up. One of my friends reported what sounds like Identical issues with the Install stopping. He was told he will need to do an erase and install, and then restore his documents and Apps by a Senior Tech on their help line. Good luck!
Oh and 10.6.4 was released last Wednesday 6/16/10.

  • Trouble Installing Pages 2.0.1v2 updater

I installed a new H D on an old 400 MHz G4 running 10.4.9. I dragged over Pages but didn't use it. The updater refused to install saying there was no authorized copy of Paged on the new drive. I used the orig discs to reinstall pages on my newer big HD. It still says it can't locate it on my Hd even if I launch it (it works as 1.0.2) HELP!

Welcome to the forums, NorthVanMan! It's always good to see a fellow Canuck.
Just to clarify, you have tried to install Pages 1.0.2 on your new hard drive? And you can launch it but not update it? Are you trying to update to Pages 2? If so, that won't work, because Pages 2 has to be purchased.

  • Trouble installing iPhoto 9.4.1 update

    Hello,
I installed the iPhoto 9.4.1 update. But it still shows in my updates window, albeit with "installed" on the right, along with a "1 update available" message in the upper left, and a little red 1 in my dock. Can't get rid of the notices or find the supposed update.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi all,
Here's what an Apple support person told me to do (she was very quick to respond and extremely polite, so kudos to her and Apple on that. I haven't tried to reinstall iPhoto yet, so not sure if it's a real fix.
    Good luck!

My name is Karen and I understand your concern regarding your iPhoto update. Though helping with technical issue is beyond my area of expertise as an iTunes Store advisor, I assure you that I'll address your concern to the best of my ability.
To fix the issue, please try to uninstall the software and re-install for free.
To uninstall apps you purchased from the Mac App Store, hold down an app’s icon in Launchpad until all the icons begin to jiggle. Click an app’s delete button (x) to uninstall the app. If an icon doesn’t have a delete button, that app can’t be uninstalled. For example, apps that come with OS X can’t be uninstalled.

  • Installed 106.3 with Combo Update but Mail won't open at all

Never saw this happen before. Mail.app won't open. Anyone else seeing this?

Exactly the same problem here. I ended up using a TC Restore and even then had to reload 10.6 from DVD, download 10.6.1 and then 10.6.2.
I won't be going down the 10.6.3 route again! I need Mail to run!
Has Apple shot itself in the foot?

    Hi.
I have always been able to re-install the Mac OS X Combo update on top again.
On my Macbook Pro, iMac 27" and a Mac pro but on my Macbook Air 2012 with 10.8.2 installed.

Then this is an easy fix must of the times. But strangely enough. I can't do it on this Air ???
I have done it tons of time on all my other Macs running Lion and Snow Lion.
This Air have Mountain Lion but is'nt that the same ???
Please if anyone knows why it want let me re-install the Combo update again. Let me know ASAP.
    Thanks a lot.
    Erik S

    Hi bro.

And i have always been able to re-install the combo again if anything was strange. But not on this.
It just tells me that its not for this model ?
Its not bought right now. I had it 2 month and i updated it to 10.8.2 my self.

  • Lion OS X 10.7.3 combo update bugs

After installing 10.7.3 combo update, I found out some bugs:
The major one is the login screen freezing. Occasionally, when I quit from sleep mode to the login screen. The screen freezes, no respond to either keyboard or trackpad. Then it goes back to sleep mode again. This wasn't happening when I was using the previous version 10.7.2.
Another one is the dashboard calculator. Every time I press once to a number button, it shows up two digits.
I don't use time machine. Will there be any methods that can revert my OS to 10.7.2?

File bug reports via Apple's feedback link.
If you haven't been making bootable backups/clones, then there's no way to go back unless you retained a copy of the 10.7.2 or earlier install app.

  • 10.4.11 combo update install problem

Has anyone else had trouble installing the combo update from 10.4 to 10.4.11?? Mine almost finishes and says it encounters an unknown error and cannot finish the install. Says it moves the update to trash and says try again from the finder...
    HELP!!

    Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk.

    [Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned (e.g., [Permissons repair|http://www.macworld.com/article/52220-3/2006/08/repairpermissions.html] as to necessity. Probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe?

  • Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update unable to finish installing

    Hello:
I have been having trouble installing the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update. This update is meant to fix a bigger problem I have had recently. I'll briefly describe the bigger problem.
A few weeks ago, I downloaded the latest updates for iTunes, Security, and Quicktime. Now from what I've gathered, Quicktime 7.2 probably caused a few applications (Microsoft apps and Photoshop app) to have trouble opening because of "shared library errors". Even my Quicktime is having trouble working right now.
This Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update is suppose to help resolve the issue, but it fails to install. Any insights as to what might be the actual problem installing the combo update would be greatly appreciated.
    Mifty

I have an emac and recently upgraded to Mac OS X (10.4.10)
I am using a wireless modem to connect to the internet. I am unable to download new versions of applications I already use.
    Error message:
A networking error has occurred: Error NSURLErrorDomain - 1005 (-1005). Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again.
I have been advised to try several things, none of which worked.
Can anyone help. This seems to be a problem with the OS X, as I was able to download before I upgraded to the latest version.
    Thanks,
