Trouble installing EVERYTHING on my iMac

My girlfriend just bought a second-hand 2008 iMac (20 inch, 2.66ghz, 2gbRAM)....
So far, I've had trouble with software updates stopping midway, snow leopard install taking a few tries to get, grey screen freezes with restarts, and now all types of trouble with the migrate assistant getting files from her old eMac....
It's been a long few days, but with a ton on disk repairs and permission repairs, I've got mostly everything done. But still having trouble with the file transfers...
Does anybody know why this is happening?
Do I need some sort of firmware update?
Is there something wrong here?
I've never seen a Mac behave like this....
Any suggestions are sincerely appreciated
-justin

HI,
and now all types of trouble with the migrate assistant getting files from her old eMac....
You are moving files from a PowerPC to an Intel based Mac. Read here.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs by Kappy
Make sure there is enough space on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*
I hope she got the install disc(s). They have a gray label and are machine specific. You need to boot from the install disc, run Disk Utility and check the startup disk errors.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

  • Trouble installing PSE 8 on imac

I've been trying for three days to install PSE8 on my iMac - no luck.  The installation bars go to about 95% of the installation, then the program quits and the disc is ejected.  The message says "Failed Installation."  Error type 2.   I tried removing other Adobe products -  still can't install PSE8.  I've followed the suggestions made on another post - no better.  I've contacted Adobe support , and have been told that the incident report has been escalated to another group of technicians.  I haven't heard back from them.
I think that there must be something about PSE8 that isn't compatible with Mac OS 10.6.1.  I certainly hope that the problem can be fixed, or this may be the last Adobe product I'll ever purchase.

Everyone really should have a bootable external available.  External hard drives are cheap enough today.
All computer hard drives will fail.  The only question is when.  Each of my two external hard drives has a full, bootable, duplicate copy of ALL of my laptop computer files - the operating system and all applications and all of my work.   I update the backup of the operating system and applications once a month.  I update all of my work every two hours.
When my internal hard drive eventually fails, I'll just reboot from my external hard drive.  Lost time - five minutes.
Every Monday, I go to Bank of America's safety deposit vault and leave there the external hard drive I’ve been using all week.  I then take home the external hard drive that has been sitting in that safety deposit box all week.  If my house burns down - or if there is a robbery - the worst that can happen is that I'll lose one week's work.  I can live with that.
I really don’t need the security of a safety deposit box.  It also costs me about $600 a year to rent this box.  When I was working, I would take my home backup DVDs to the office and store them there.  I also would take my office backup DVDs to my home and store them there.  Since I’ve retired, I really don’t have an offsite location to use, so I use a bank safety deposit box.  It’s expensive overkill, but it works.
Ironically, the most stable and readable long-term storage medium is writing your work onto paper with ink.  The Dead Sea scrolls were created that way 1,800 years ago - and are perfectly legible.  I have ten-year-old disks that essentially are unreadable.  Being paranoid will insure that your work remains readable as computer technologies change.
I know I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?  (Who said that?)
I never thought of creating a new admin user.  I didn't think of the problem as being that far upstream.

  • Trouble Installing Memory on Intel iMac

    Here's my situation:
The factory memory is ejected. Both slots are empty. Swing arms are out as far as they will go. When I slide the SO-DIMM into the top slot, the module does not catch the arms as it slides along the track. Therefore, when it is fully seated, the arms are still extended out all the way. When I seat the top-slot SO-DIMM, the arms don't move. Not at all.
Since the SO-DIMM fills up most of the track when it's installed, the arms can't swing in (they usually slide along the track, right?). In my current situation, moving the arms in presses against the installed SO-DIMM almost immediately. Pushing the arms in all the way would almost certainly jam up the track and possibly damage the SO-DIMM connector inside the iMac.
In a nutshell: I can't get the top-slot SO-DIMM module to engage the RAM ejectors as I slide it in.
For the time being, I have the top slot empty and the bottom slot filled. The bottom is not a problem because I can start with the arms half-way folded in, and the SO-DIMM easily catches as I slide it in.
    http://homepage.mac.com/abowlus/two.jpg
As you can see here, the arms have the extra bump that covers the top slot when they are closed. Why are these plastic bumps here? That's what's stopping me from sliding in the top SO-DIMM.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Yes, being too careful is exactly what got me in this situation-- I originally intended just to slip another 512 stick into slot 2, but it ended up not getting recognized, so I pulled the arms to eject both modules so I could try reinserting.
I have since become more adept at memory installation. I've discovered the extra push that's necessary to install the module completely.
It's easy to do this on the bottom slot. I can fold in the arms about half way, so that the SO-DIMM module can easily catch-on mid-way down the SO-DIMM track into the iMac.
Oddly enough, the plastic bumps on the arms ONLY cover the top slot. They do not obstruct the bottom slot whatsoever. To give myself enough space, I have to open the arms completely so that the bumps will be moved off to the side and the entire top slot will be accessible. However, in this position, the arms are so far along the SO-DIMM track that when I install a module into the top slot, the arms will not engage and the module will slide all the way in without the arms moving at all.
If those bumps weren't there, this wouldn't be a problem... but for the time being, I have to figure out how to work around them. Thanks for help.

  • Trouble installing tiger on an iMac DV+

I tried installing new Tiger software on an iMac DV+. When I click on the Install Mac OS X icon in the installation folder, I get the following message: "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. Please consult the documentation for the list of supported computers."
My computer should be supported. I'm currently running OS 9.0. I found some info online that said that I have to upgrade to 9.1 and then do a FirmWare update 4.1.9 before I can then install Tiger. Well, I upgraded to 9.1 and then tried to do the FirmWare update, but I think the Firmware update will only work if you have a CD for it in your CD/DVD drive.
Does this all sound right? Do i really have to get a FirmWare disk before I can do all of this? It sems so circuitous and roundabout. I'll spend more money, but I want to be sure first.
    Can anyone help me?

You do not need a firmware CD to run the firmware updater on your iMac.

  • Trouble installing CS4 on new iMacs

Since I cannot insert disks into the new iMacs(there is no drive), I was told to copy the content onto my desktop, and install it that way.  When I open istaller, the content from disk 1 is installed successfully, but then it asks me to insert disk 2.  Since I already the content of disk 2, I just press "ok," but nothing happens; it just keeps repeating the same prompt for me to insert disk 2.  I would image this is because the installer reads when another disk is inserted, but since there is no disk drive, it doesn't think I've done anything.  As a result, only the content from disk 1 is installed.  How can I install the whole thing?

Follow the steps mentioned the below link, it will give you a step by step workflow to perform Desktop installation :-
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/install-creative-suite-4-or.html
As a workaround you could download the CS4 software from and then use this to install.

  • HT1338 Having trouble installing iDVD on my imac G5.

I have the iLife 05 DVD that contains iDVD. I have a imac 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 with a DVD (read only) drive. I have an external LG Super Multi DVD Rewriter. The external DVD drive works with the imac but in the system profile says under burn support "yes (not supported)".
Any ideas on how to get iDVD to load?
    Thanks.

Hello, can I assume it's Installed, but just won't Burn because the Internal Read Only?
Two ways to go, use iDVD to burn to a Disc Image first to later use Disk Utility to Restore it to a DVD.
Or try the HPfurz.sit.hqx hack here...

  • Troubles installing Windows 7 to iMac

So I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my iMac that I got brand new back last summer of 2013. I've been reading how to install it and it says after the installation, I'll need to pop in my OS X disk so it knows the interface correctly. My iMac did not come with any OS X disk; just the computer and wires came in the box. So when I get to that stage, I'm not sure what to do because I have no disk. Any help is greatly appreciated!

You should probably ask this question in the BootCamp forum https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
While we all use iMacs we don't all use Bootcamp or windows.

I am having trouble viewing iStore. It appears as if its a Flash issue, as several minutes after logging in to iStore I get a non-flash page of iStore in my iTunes window. I have re-installed everything and tried opening all ports in router, and used msconfig to bring up each service individually to see if there is an effect.Flash and iTunes have been re-installed  ...any ideas?

I agree. I don't rely on iCloud as a backup, that is what I have my portable hard drive for. Its 500 GB so I can hold my entire iTunes library several times over on it. I have all my movies on my hard drive, but somehow "The Mist" got deleted off of my hard drive, so I figured "Well, the option to redownload an already purchased movie is available through iCloud, I'll just do that!"
And permissions and download availability have nothing to do with it, the movie's still there, it still allows me to redownload it. The only problem is when I click download, I get that message.
And nobody else uses my computer, but I do have multiple accounts authorized on it. Even still though, I am attepmpting to download it through the account I purchased it under. :/

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Did you use migration assistant to copy over programs, documents, and settings? You can't do that with PSE. Elements is not a tidy package in accordance with the apple developer guidelines. The installer strews stuff all of your hard drive in place the migration assistant isn't programmed to look and you can never hope to find all h the bits. You must always install PSE from scratch on a new machine. By attempting to copy it you have made a lot of trouble for yourself.
You will need to download and run this:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and then you can go around and manually remove what you can reach. Look in applications, your hard drive>library>application support>adobe, your username>library>preferences. In the user library also delete any saved application states for PSE.
Then you can reinstall from scratch.
