Hello miata1
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Exactly which model iMac do you have?
Before 2007 > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463
or after 2007 > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758
If you have a newer 27" model, then neither Tiger, Leopard or earlier version of Snow will run on it?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
If it has an ATI Radeon 2600 graphic's chip, then it is most likely a 24" Late 2006 white Intel iMac.
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP28
If you are told that the update is not needed, then either the update is not for that iMac or it has already been updated.
As for the screen problem, it would help if you can describe in detail exactly what it looks like?
Is it faded, does it have lines, is the color off, or what?
I would first, go to Apple > System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing and in the Display: section make sure that the Enhance contrast: is set to Normal.
Then next, go to Apple > System Preference > Displays > Color and select a different Display Color Profile.

  • TS3824 How can we install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?

How can I install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update 2.0, if the screen is white and I can't get to the Apple menu?  My computer has 5 vertical purple lines against white screen at startup before the Apple logo appears and the spinning gear...then everything disappears and the screen hangs on the white screen.  I have tried unplugging and removing all my peripherals and the COMMAND, OPTION, P & R set of keys and still nothing.  I have tried COMMAND C to start up from cd and it only tells me to turn off the computer and turn it back on.  I found information on Apple's Support pages regarding the iMac Graphics Firmware Update but I am unable to download and install if I can't get to the Apple menu.  Can anyone help?

You may have hardware problem, I think a visit to your local Apple Store or AASP is in order.

  • Question about imac graphics firmware updates

My Imac model identifier is imac8,1; the machine is a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  I am running OS 10.6.7.  I have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card.
Firmware Update 1.0.1 is apparently installed, since my graphics ROM version is 113-82250L-259.
Symptoms occurring within last 6 months or so:  Without notice, the screen goes black, though I can detect light “behind” (i.e., it doesn’t look powered off). The only remedy I’ve been able to get to work is to use the power button (or unplug) to turn the machine off. I don’t know whether the system has frozen or not.  I’ve looked at the console and system log, but I can’t tell from them what’s happening.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM.  The computer passes the extended Apple Hardware Test.
My question: is one or both of the imac graphics firmware updates 1.0.2 (September 10, 2009) or 2.0 (June8, 2011) appropriate for my machine?

If there is an update to your particular graphics firmware, Software Update will let you know; if there is nothing showing there, it means there is no update available for your configuration. Do not simply download from the Apple website and install something that could cause havoc on your machine.
I'm not sure what the problem might be, but it could be graphics card and/or logic board related. Since you've already done the SMC and PRAM resets, unless someone else has another idea, I'd suggest booking an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation and diagnosis. If the problem is intermittent, take screen shots or video of it so you can show it to them.

  • Installed iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.1 - now programs keep crashing

    Hi,
I installed the firmware update as recommended by apple and now I find that most programs crash on a regular basis. In particular, MS Office (Had this installed before the firmware and it worked perfectly) and iTunes.
Can I back out the firmware update?

    1) Quit all applications
    2) Click Shut Down in the iMac EFI Firmware update window and wait for your computer to shut down
3)Press and hold the power button until you hear a long tone, then release the power button
A status bar indicates the progress of the update
Important: Do not interrupt the update
Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the iMac EFI Firmware update.
Click OK if the firmware is up to date
If these instructiona appear on your screen again repeat steps 2,3 and 4
Hope this helps - I had the same trouble initially!

  • My iMac 2011 21" Maverick cannot install iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.9

My iMac 21" mid 2011 2.8GHz Ci& 16Gb OSX 10.9.1 has started to run 'hot'. Even then freshly rebooted, the top left hand side of the computer (with the screen facing you) gets rather warm (very hot if you actually use the computer). I beleive this to be the location where power supply is located.
    I have tried:
    1) resetting the SMC (shutting down and removing the power cable - over night).
    2) resetting PRAM
    3) vacuuming out the vents to remove possible 'fluff' and dust.
    4) threatening it with a hammer...
None of these actions has worked.
I rummaged about on the support forums and notice that there are a few firmware updates that might be worth installing - just to remove firmware bugs as a potential contributing factor. The available updates were - my iMac is running SMC version 1.71f22 and there is a 1.9 version, and an upgrade to the Radeon 6770M graphics Firmware to 3.0.
However the requirements on the web site http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1498 state that I need to be running Lion... I have mavericks installed and the installer alerts with "This software is not supported on your system" when I am cheeky enough to try installing the firmware.
Can anyone please adivse on how to install these firmware updates - without having to downgrade to Lion?
    Many thanks.

I have just checked the MBA (and an old MBP) and they both have the right versions.
    e.g.
    MBA
    Boot ROM Version:          MBA61.0099.B04
    SMC Version (system):          2.13f7
And the MBP 7,1 Mid 2010 (pimped a bit with 8Gb Ram and a SSD)
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP71.0039.B0E
    SMC Version (system):          1.62f7
So everything looks sweet! Silly me for thinking that Apple had over looked this.
Thanks to everyone for their help in clearing up my misunderstanding.

  • Installing iMac G3 Firmware Update 1.2 on Mac OS X

    Good evening!
I own an iMac G3 Rev. D (333 MHz). It's currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9. At first, I tried to downgrade to Mac OS 9, with no success. Eventually, I found out that the iMac wouldn't react to any startup keyboard commands (just like C, Option, PRAM reset and so on). Probably, the pre-owner password protected the Open Firmware.
I downloaded the Open Firmware Password Utility, but after installing it told me my firmware wasn't the latest version. I tried to install Firmware 1.2, but alas! this, in turn, is only possible under Mac OS Classic.
However, as long as I can't boot from CD, I can't install OS 9. It wouldn't even run the Classic mode.
Is there any possibilty to upgrade to Firmware 1.2 under Mac OS X Panther?
    Thank-you very much in advance!

If you are running Panther, you already have that firmware update.  No iMac PowerPC can run 10.2 or later without the most current firmware on their system.

  • About the iMac graphics firmware update 1.0

    HI there!
I´ve been having really annoying problems since upgrading to leopard...
While playing World of Warcraft the system kinda freezes and there is a lot more than me with this problem (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=2765968869&sid=1)
I have a iMac 24" bought in the late december 2006, so the reason for this post is simply to ask you guys if I can fix this very annoying bug with this update.
It says mid 2007 in sys req but have anyone tried it and got it to work?
Thank you, thank you, thank you if you can help me out here

Since your problem only began after doing the upgrade, there might have been something on your Tiger system that was not compatible with Leopard. Could be something as minor as a widget, or could be something more substantial. Whatever, it'll take either research at a number of third party websites, or trial and error, to find. Might be easy to find, might not.
After seeing intermittent video loss, I wasn't up for all that, so just erased and fresh installed, then transferred files. Third party apps - I reinstalled individually only after I knew which were for sure compatible.

  • Screen no longer works after Graphics Firmware Update

I received my new IMAC 20 inch a couple of days ago. Worked like a charm. perfect.
I received a request (software update) to update the Graphics firmware for the ATI 2600 processor.
I performed the update, but I can no longer use the IMAC. The screen just stays black, no longer displays any information. I hear the hard disk working thru the startup process, but the screen just stays OFF.
I zapped the PRAM, and restarted many times. No success.
Please help. It worked so fine before this major trouble.
    Patrick

The iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 states:
This update is for 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac computers with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor, running Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later with iMac Software Update 1.2.1 for Tiger, or Mac OS X 10.5 with iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard.
Perhaps you meant OS 10.5.1. The above update also states:
Note: If you are running Mac OS X 10.5.1, iMac Software Update 1.3 is included.

  • IMac SMC Firmware Update 1.1 will not load. Help!

I have just purchased an iMac with a Fusion drive. The App Store tells me to install "iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.1." I have tried to do so several times, leaving the computer alone until it restarts itself. But the update does not seem to have taken place: the udate is listed among the updates accomplished, but it continues to appear at the top of the screen as the available update and the badge for an update still appears in the App Store icon.
Any suggestions? Is that a faulty upgrade? Have I got an faulty Mac?

But isn't the Fusion drive in part a flash drive?
And if I don't need it, how do I dismiss it? Will my App Store Icon forever have a red badge telling me I have an unneeded update to install?

  • How to install Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 in Lion?

I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a 27" iMac with a NVidia 7600GT graphics card.  Knowledgebase article HT3986 says that Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 must be installed first. I downloaded the firmware update  but on running it says the Mac OS X 10.6 is required  but I've already upgraded to Lion.
I was able to install Windows 7 but I have to disable the graphics card for it to boot and use it in VGA mode.
How can I install the firmware update?

I used BC 4.0. I don't remember installing the firmware update and thought it likely that I would skip it as I didn't intend to install Windows.
    Here's the system profile information:
    NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT:
Chipset Model:          NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
      Type:          GPU
      Bus:          PCIe
      PCIe Lane Width:          x16
      VRAM (Total):          256 MB
      Vendor:          NVIDIA (0x10de)
      Device ID:          0x0391
      Revision ID:          0x00a1
      ROM Revision:          3022
I can't find info on what to look for on this iMac to know if it's been updated.

  • IMac Graphics FW Update 1.0.2 will not install

Configuration is iMac 7,1 ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphic card and Mac OS X 10.6.1 installed. A subsequent download of iMac Graphics FW Update 1.0.2, and an installation attempt resulted in message that the firmware update was not needed on my computer. In another forum, I read that someone else with the same HW configuration and OS level also could not install this firmware. Is this firmware somehow included with Mac OS X 10.6.1 or does the firmware installer have a bug?

    Ah! The all-important detail!
Then, I have no idea why you can't install it. I suggest downloading a clean copy manually and trying again. If you get the same issue, try a safe mode boot and installing there. Details in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

  • IMac freezes with Halo UB game - after graphics firmware update

    Hi
The graphics firmware update works good - the couple of things I found to freeze it work fine now.
But I have found one way to get the freeze and black screen plus the ASIC error in the system.log.
Open Halo UB 2.0.2 and set the video options to use 1920x1200. When I have it at 1344x840 or whatever, the game is fine.
But when I try to set Halo UB to 1920x1200, I get the freeze thing. Halo says it has to test the new video settings and says to hit escape if no dialog appears. Once I accept that, then the screen goes black and the freeze hits.
So I'm happy that everything's working good for all the other normal causes of the freeze. Hopefully Apple can now track down this issue.
Anyone else out there have Halo UB to try this out?
Maybe it's my Halo UB install. Mine was a fresh install this morning though.
    good luck!
    let me know...
    thanks!

Freezes with Jedi Academy as well, freezes after iMac update, 10.5.1 install, Firmware Update (which i had to do with Pacifist)...
just Freezes and everything needs to be restarted, haven't tried the HALO thing yet, not sure if i want to push my luck...

  • Frozen at the "Graphics Firmware Update 1.0" dialog

I installed the Nov 15 graphics update on my iMac 24", but when I clicked the "update" button on the "Graphics Firmware Update 1.0" dialog, it just froze.
The dialog has not showm any progress since I clicked the "update button". It has just been sitting there for about 30 minutes. I can move the mouse, but nothing I click on responds.
The bad thing is that this dialog box warns you not to touch anything or else the computer will not boot.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Well, I gave up and rebooted. It did reboot, and when I logged in, I got a dialog box saying the graphics was updated to version 1.0.
However, when I rebooted using bootcamp, Windows still shows the ATI Mobility HD 2600XT driver as being version 8.390.0.0 6/14/2007. That's what it was before installing the update.
I thought updating the Leopard would update the bootcamp partition as well. Is this supposed to be done separately? Or maybe when the updated froze, it didn't update the Windows side. In which case I would have to uninstall/reinstall the update.
I am guessing here. I have no idea what to do. Does anyone know the answer?

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion with app: "iMac EFI Firmware update"

I have an app on my MacBook Pro late 2011 model, by the name "iMac EFI Firmware update" that my computer says is useless... can I uninstall it using CleanMyMac without corrupting my OS Mountain Lion or simply dragging it to the garbage?

You can delete it. Just drag it to the Trash and this installer will be removed. As you have already installed this update, you don't need the installer anymore on the hard drive
