Trouble installing SIIG Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card

I bought a Siig Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card. I am unable to install it on my G5 Quad 2.5 ghz dual 500 GIG HD PCIe because there isn't a power port to plug into. I called Apple & they said no can do. Siig support said I could plug into my "DVD drive". I rechecked the super drive & confirmed that there is not a forr pin in line power port. I have read postings of other G5 (dual processor) owners using this card. Is my problem unique to the G5 quad or is there a solution? Please help John

Most of the time if a card or something requires power, the vendor should have included a "Y-splitter" with it so that you can run DVD and card.
I thought PCIe would have more than enough, too. I tend to avoid SIIG though, having seen too many issues on various cards. They use to use ACard but seem to be branching out on their own.
There are some other FW800 PCIe. I think www.barefeats.com either did or was going to review a few. And of course OWC would have a list.
Not sure it will help, can't hurt, but I have seen and heard where a drive wouldn't mount but did after reset nvram was done. Something that ATTO recommends when changing PCI cards (like UL5D).
Oh -one thing - does the LaCie show up connected to native FW800 port okay?

  • Firewire 800 front port problem

I'm using an RME Fireface 800 audio interface, which is a Firewire 800 device. When I hook it up to the front FW800 port on my Mac Pro, it is periodically disconnecting while in use (using Logic, Final Cut Pro, etc.). To be clear, I don't mean that the cable is physically disconnecting, but rather that the interface disappears from the operating system while still attached and powered up.
When I use the rear FW800 port I'm not having this problem, at all.
Can anyone think of an explanation other than perhaps my front FW 800 port is screwed up? Has anyone else had this issue?
    Thanks...

    Hi John,
Yep, exactly the same problem I had with my Mac Pro's front FW800 connection and the FF800. The problem in the end turned out to be because I had my SSL Duende mini plugged into the rear FW400 port. Have you got any other firewire devices plugged in? The FF800 really dislikes sharing a bus with anything else, which is why I went out and bought a PCIe FW400 card and now all my devices have their own bus and all works just as you'd expect. Hope that helps, cheers.

  • Dead firewire Ports & PCI Card

Well here i go. Today I hooked up my firewire external drives. I am in the process of cleaning and reorganizing. The drives did not mount. The deck was next to be hooked up and is not recognized?
Okay so next its the forums alot of info. too much for me. Zapped the pram rebooted numerous times. Shut down let everything rest unplugged everything rebooted and plugged everthing in, nooo go. One of the LaCie fwdrives does work in my Mac Book Pro, so I realize it is not the drive or the cable. Reset the pmu button. NADA.
Okay so now its off to Staples for that Belkin PCI Firewire card. Installed it nothing. The system profiler recognizes it but the drives don't mount, and Disk Utility does not see the drives. Called Belkin tech support and I don't even want to go there, no we diffently do not want to talk about that.. anyone had a similar problem I would greatly like to hear what you have to say. It is real obvious that I would like to have the ports....BOTH FW PORTS THAT SHIPPED WITH THE APPLE G 5 work, however I quess that will not be and it seems everyone just settles for the PCI workaround, I will also if I can get it to work.. Thanks. I'll need the practice for when my USB ports LUNCH...

Regarding having to disconnect every FW connection before hooking up a Canon (GL2 in my case) I'd figured it was my Echo AudioFire 2 FW audio box that was causing the strin on the system, but as you quite rightly pointed out it's the Canon.
I just got back from buying a no brand "IEEE 1394A Card" from a local PC centric store and hooked the AudioFire up to it thinking it would end the problem, but as soon as I connected the GL2 the connection to my 1TB external LaCie was severed and my Lexar Professional card reader started flashing on and off (maybe it was flashing in sympathy with the pulses coming from the GL2 - a communication signal of some kind).
Anyways, I now have the following connections which is working great:
    1. Firewire PCI card hooked up to the GL2 exclusively
    2. Built-in G5 Firewire (rear FW400 port) hooked up to the FW breakout cable on my Cinema Display.
2a. (Cinema Display FW400 port 1) to Ext 1TB Lacie
2b. (Cinema Display FW400 port 2) to Lexar Professional card readers' FW port 1 and then from port 2 to the Echo AudoFire 2.
The only downside to this is that I was hoping to start using an iMac as my main machine but I can't now because I need two FW busses, and when I upgrade to a new Mac Pro I'll have to use up a PCI slot for the FW card.
I'm surprised Apple's pro machines only have the 1 FW bus, and even stranger how FW400 and FW800 share the same bus!!!

  • Firewire 800 & 400 ports

    HI,
I have an iMac 24" which has two Firewire ports in the rear (and 800 & a 400).
I have an external LaCie 250gb drive connected to the 400 port. I also have a Panasonic miniDV camera which successfully connects via this port, however at the expense of unplugging the LaCie.
I wish to use both at the smae time via FCE.
Wikipedia seems to suggest that the 800 format is backwards compatible with 400.
So my question is, will my LaCie drive & Panasonic camcorder operate through the 800 port using the correct cable (assuming these come with the 4 pin end for the camcorder).
    Thanks

    Hi Eric,
    Ian is correct.
    I have a MBP w/1 FW 400 port and 1 FW 800 port, and I use a 400->800 converter.
I think the converter was my first purchase after I got the MBP. I couldn't find info at the time if there was any advantage to use the camera or HD with either port, so I figured a converter would give me max flexibility to check it out for myself.
My experience now is that it doesn't make any difference. That matches what I've read that if two or more FW devices plugged into the Mac, the data flows at the speed of the slowest device; it doesn't make any difference which port it's connected to.
To do it again, I would just buy a cable with the 800 plug on one end, and a 400 plug (either 4-pin or 6-pin) on the other end. Reason is the converter is just one more thing to keep track of, and, because it's about 1.5 inches long, I think it puts a bit more strain on the Mac's 800 port.

  • HELP! Is anyone else having trouble installing Alesis Firewire

    on Bootcamp drive!!!
I install it, install the drivers, but still, I get Cant Find Alesis!
    please help... Thank you.

I was unsuccessful with my first attempt to update to iOS7last night & went to bed in disgust. I tried again this morning & was happy to see the "Update was Successful" message as I headed off to work. I did not have a chanceto explore the changes until tonight & I have found that I cannot log into my Apple account from the iPad (I am writing this on my iMac)- no access to One-to-One, iTunes, etc. When I click the link to "Forgot your Apple ID" or "Forgot your password", I find myself on a site telling me to enable Javascript in my iPad settings (it is already enabled) and, a link to identify the country where I am located(?), which loops me back to the log in page.......It is Groundhog Day!
Apple supports tells me that I, and those having trouble like me, are statisitical anamolies (sp?), & then directed me to scrub the iPad; take it back to its default, factory settings & then install iOS7. My response was that I had much better things to do with my Friday evenings than mess with a faulty product, be it the iPad or the iOS, and that we statisitical anamolies should be compensated for our frustration , as wellas the fact that we bring some of the bugs and flaws of Apple's products to their attention. The current arrangement is that, by ppurchasing Apple's products at a premium price, I am paying the company to let me troubleshoot their products. Seems backwards!
I am done venting my frustration for now.

  • Adding Firewire 800 PCI Express Card to G5

I wanted to add a Siig Firewire 800 3-Port PCI-express card to my G5. One of the requirements was connecting a 4 pin power y cord to an available 4 pin power connector for reliable power output. I can't locate an available 4 pin power connector in my G5. Is there one available? Where is it? Which slot is best for the installation?

#1 zapping PRAM/NVRAM has to be from a cold start, and done thru 2 reboots (don't need to go crAZy with 3-5).
#2 Open Firmware is thorough, efficient, and can be done on any type of startup.
#3 "reset-nvram" - as I mentioned above, should be first step in hardware troubleshooting or anytime after changing hardware and getting a kernel panic on first restart.

  • External Drives Won't Mount with SIIG Fire WIre 800 PCI Card

I can't get any drive to mount using this card. It's the SIIG FW 800 3 port PCI card. I've also got the SIIG FW 400 and I think a Belkin 5 port usb PCI card. I've removed the other cards leaving just the 800. I've moved them all around into different slots. Nothing Changed. I've reset the PRAM and the NVRAM. I've Unplugged system and let it sit for a while. I've had only one drive connected to the 800 card and no other 400, 800 or usb peripherals connected. That didn't help either. Again, this is the second card, so I have to assume that the odds of getting to bad cards in a row is a long shot... right? I have to assume that it's the G5 but the other cards work when put into any of the PCI slots. I know all the drives work. I'm just kind of baffled here. Oh, and in the system profiler the drive shows up as "Unknown Device" but it never mounts on the desktop. Also drives connected to the 800 PCI card don't show up in programs like Diskwarrior or Drive Genius. Starting the drive while Disk Utility is open also does nothing. So, I'm at a loss. I spoke with SIIG tech support and they said they had no idea but they could test the card if I send it to the. That would at least confirm or deny if the card is faulty. I think the card is ok and the mac is just messing with it somehow? Any Ideas? Could resetting the PMU help? I've also cleared my cache and defragged and rebuilt the data directory and all the usual utility stuff. So the system is peppier but still no drives mounting on the 800 pci card? Please shout out if you have an idea... Thanks..

I eventually gave up. I will probably get another card at some point but it probably won't be a SIIG card. Even though they are recommended by digidesign I just doesn't seem to want to work with my G5. Maybe it's some kind of weird software conflict blocking the functionality of the card? Don't know. Two cards in a row were non functional. Something is gummin up the works and the PCI slots work with the other cards I have. The only thing I did not try is plugging in the optional power connection to the FW800 card, which is supposed to be optional. I called SIIG and they had no idea what the problem was and they also said that the power plug would not make a difference for the problem I was having. Anyway, I'm gonna keep monitoring posts to this cause I'd love to hear the answer.. but I'm throwing in the towel. Good luck to the rest of you still trying to solve the riddle.

  • Time Machine Server - external firewire 800 RAID array incompatible??

    Hi all
I originally posted in the wrong forum... so here I go again...
I have an XServe G5 connected to an 8TB RAID array via firewire 800 (running latest version of leopard server) purchased solely to act as a time machine server for a whole bunch of machines. A lot of money and resources went toward this as this is a vital part of our office. One of the machines is a completely decked out Mac Pro with 4x500GB Hard Drives striped for multimedia processing. (Thats why I need a HUGE backup partition on Time Machine)
Now, this was working for about 4 months. Some computers still see the backup array as a destination, but can't write to it, (just sit there for ever "preparing backup") and one machine successfully is still backing up to it.
But for the majority of the machines, when I try to set the Xserve external raid array as a Time Machine destination for the network, it comes up with a yellow "!" sign and "This disk drive may not support Time Machine over the network. Get more information about compatible drives" with a link that points here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306332
As you can see, that was completely not helpful, and now i'm wondering if I'll still have a job after the boss finds out I've just wasted his several thousands of dollars...
When selecting a backup destination for time machine backups, the array appears, but it always says "Failed" with an "i" next to Latest Backup in the system preferences, with the message "Backup volume cannot be found". Thats not true because i've so much as gone to the effort of actually mounting the dang drive in the finder... so its just not looking hard enough!
Here is some info about the external device:
It looks like a PC tower thing, with 8 firewire 800 ports on the back and 8 internal SATA slots. I purchased 8x1TB drives and inserted them in, and software partitioned them to create a giant striped drive (I understand that this might be a little unstable but its just a backup drive).
I daisy chained the firewire 800 ports on the back to output 2 cables, both going in the back of the xserve. Formatted fine, and works a treat. Except for the silly time machine thing....
I think what I am going to do is completely and utterly start again... go nuts one weekend and erase everything, every computer, every wireless router, everything, and start fresh. Since there have been so many little glitches here and there I just want them dead.
Well, if anyone has a quick fix, i'd appreciated it before the weekend

Hi everyone, Just thought I would give you all an update on how things went.
Lets just say that I got everything working fine... this is what I did.
    1. I went through, completely un-raided and formatted the external 8 Bay firewire 800 drive
    2. Completely reformatted XServe and reinstalled fresh (Probably not an option for a few, but I had a spare weekend)
    3. Completely reformatted all client computers and reset all client accounts (Once again, probably not an option for most)
Essentially, I was starting out with a completely virgin setup and setting up for the first time. I installed the firewire 800 drives, and made them into a RAID again. Then installed Leopard server. Brought all the backed up files across, and when I plugged in the drive in Finder, it asked "Do you want to use this as a time machine backup" to which I said "Yes". It proceeded to create a backup.
When that finished, I went into server preferences, and selected the external as a time machine backup for the network. It worked...
I then went about everything like business as usual, and everything worked great. Still going... for now.
So thanks for all that helped, maybe try completely reinstalling everything and it may work.

  • Firewire 800 not powering OWC 100GB HD

My brother and I recently purchased an OWC 100GB hard drive with firewire 800 and usb 2.0. My hard drive is working perfectly, being bus powered through firewire 800. However his computer isn't powering up the hard drive. We both have the same laptop, powerbook 15' 1.5 ghz w/1gb ram. I plugged his external hd into my laptop and it powered up just fine. It seems the problem lies with his laptop's firewire 800 port. I repaired permission, checked system profile and it shows the firewire 800 port, and reinstalled the os x update 10.4.6. We also plugged in the supplied ac adapter for the external hd and it did work with his laptop. Has anyone had trouble with the firewire 800 port now powering devices? Everyone's help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try resetting your power management unit (PMU), directions are at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 That can sometimes fix that type of issue.

  • Will a Firewire 800 hard drive work on my MacBook with Firewire 400?

Hi, I have a MacBook I bought in 2008. The FireWire specs say " Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec"
I am considering a new external hard drive (the Iomega MiniMax) and want to use Firewire for this one. The specs for the hard drive say: "The MiniMax includes 2 fast FireWire 800 interfaces, a USB 2.0 hub, plus a FireWire 400 to 800 cable."
Will this FireWire 400 to 800 cable allow me to plug my FireWire 400 laptop port to this FireWire 800 harddrive port? It sounds like it will but I wanted a sanity check before I order it.
    Thanks.

Yes, that should work just fine.

  • Daisy-chaining firewire 400 and firewire 800?

I would like to daisy-chain two Western Digital MyBook Pros to a Macbook:
    - FW 400 from Macbook to first drive
    - FW 800 between the drives
Would this work or not? I have one of those, they have 2 x FW 800, 1 x FW 400, 1 x USB at back.
    (If not, I'll buy a 'Premium' which has 2 x FW 400, and 1 x USB..)

    JoeyR wrote:
I'm not sure if the hardware in the first drive, that's connected by firewire 400 is "smart" enough to jump the data over to the FW800 connectors for daisy chaining.
Just pulled this from the WD site. I would say this indicates it would work. You won't get more speed but they should work daisy chained. This indicates the drive is smart enough to do this.
+Question: Will Western Digital FireWire 400 (1394a) external hard drives work connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port?+
+Answer: The FireWire 800 Specification (1394b) states that FireWire 400 devices will work while connected to a FireWire 800 (1394b) port. The FireWire 400 cable (4-6 pin or 6-6 pin) will not connect to a FireWire 800 port (9 pin) therefore you will need to connect the hard drive using a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable (1394a to 1394b cable). These cables are available at most computer stores.+
