Trouble Installing WD My Book World Edition 1TB

Hi,
Yesterday I bought a a network hard drive at Bestbuy to use with my two 13" Macbooks which both run Snow Leopard. The Mac section of the HDD manual basically says, "plug it in. it works." I wish this were the case. Some times my computer recognizes the HDD and places it under the Shared menu, and some times it doesn't. When it does recognize it, some times it calls it public and displays a little HDD icon which I can drag to my desktop as an Alias, and other times it looks like a little server called MyBookWorld and lets me log in as a guest or as an admin if I can figure out the password. Interestingly enough, once I used the user name and password for logging into my Mac and it worked perfectly, but not ever since.
If I plug the drive directly into my MacBook via ethernet, it shows up every time, but I want to be able to use it wirelessly, or else I would have purchased a USB drive.
I'm using an Actiontec GT724-WG DSL Modem/Wireless router which was just hooked up last week. (We moved into a new place in which DSL is the only option, and TDS are the only providers.)
I've never done anything with my network before. Is there some kind of setup I need to do to ensure that my computer picks up networked drives and stuff at home? Do I need to become some kind of home network administrator? Has anyone run into similar problems?

I too apparently made the mistake of buying a WD World Edition II 2TB drive after seeing it sale priced by WD on Dealmac.com. I am unable to see it as a network drive or using any disk utility tool when connecting it either directly to my Mac or directly to the latest Airport either by USB or Ethernet cables. All comments on websites seem to require that I delve into programing with SAMBA or some such to hack the drive and get it to be visible and usable on my Mac network. Does anyone have a suggestion or solution for getting a WDWE up on a Mac network without complex programming or having a Windows machine? Or is it really not functional for a Macintosh user without a degree in Windows networking? Thanks!

  • Airport Express and Western Digital My Book World Edition

Hi all, first time poster long time lurker
I've just bought a WD My book world edition 1tb (the white one) and simply cannot get it to work with my current set up.
I've got a mac book pro & Maci mini. Internet comes via an Airport Express plugged into a netgear adsl router dg834 v2 which gets it's IP address via DCHP from my wife's firm
I followed the set up instructions but neither computer can see the My Book.
However if I plug the Mac into the router it can see it, ditto if I plug the My Book directly into the Mac Book's either net port.
So why can't it see it over the airport, when the two computers can both see each other?
Confused by the whole thing, and any help or advice would be most greatfully recieved...
    Many thanks
    Andrew

The AirPort Express will only support a compatible printer. It does not support a hard drive at the USB port. You'll need an AirPort Extreme for that. Check this Apple document to confirm and verify:

  • Western Digital My Book World Edition Network Hard Drive

    Hi All,
Does anyone know if one of these network drives will work with the Mac OS? I am setting up a Digital Photo lab at my school and would like one place where all students can store their files. We have 21 of the new iMacs i this lab .Also, can I format the drive as a Mac OS Extended drive?
    Thanks,
    Ben

I've just purchased a 1TB My Book World Edition and went through the installation process on a Windows machine. I can see the PUBLIC connection from >Go>Network.
I can't log on selecting the SMB/CIFS shared volume because I don't know how to Authenticate it. I have made an account or passwork for this? Or have I? Or is there a factory default?
I've installed and I'm running WD Anywhere Backup successfully. So I have almost all the functionality I wanted except.
I want to use Time Capsule. Presently, the 12" PowerBook is the only Leopard machine on the network, the MacBook Pro is still Tiger because I run ProTools and don't want to upgrade until the beta upgrade is stable.
When I try and use the Shared Storage Manager via http://192.168.2.9 because, again, I do not know the username and password.
I do want to use the ability to be able to access this drive remotely, via the internet, so do I have to make a VPN? Is so, do I have to purchase a product such a DigiTunnel or VPN Tracker? Which one do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have.

  • Western Digital My Book World Edition network interface

I just brought a WD My Book World Edition Network Interface 500GB storage system. It is NTFS type and come along with installation diskette for Miscosoft Windorw but not for 10.5. After installed the harddisk on Window and check the iMac. It find the harddisk in shared drive but no harddisk mounted on the desktop. I can view the harddisk but I find difficult to control it.
Is there anyway to make make the harddisk mounted as harddisk on iMac desktop? I am trying to set up a FTP protocol. Please advice.

I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'
It is a brand new iMac and running Lion OSX
Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • WD World Edition 1TB as a Time Machine drive with Mac and XP?

I plan on buying a WD World Edition 1TB to use as my Time Machine drive over wireless netowrk at home for my 320GB MBP.
My wife has a Windows XP PC so I would like to partition the 1TB into maybe 600MB for me and 400MB for her.
First of all, will this type of partition work with TM and also, what format should the WD Drive be? I have installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G on my MBP.
Any info from someone who does something simalr would be greatly appreciated.
    Dave

    That sounds fine.
So in theory, the WD comes with no partitions so I could set the whole thing up on the XP machine and set the partition sizes, then go the Mac, connect to the partition I've set aside for myself and select it, at which point the Mac will format it to HFS and start backing up?
You say the Mac is oblivious to partitions so what would stop it formatting the entire drive to HFS?
Ideally I'd like to get the WD software to backup the XP machine to the XP partition and TM to backup the Mac to the HFS partition. Do you know if this is likely to work? Hopefuilly someone with this drive will be able to answer as well.
Thanks for your help so far

  • My book world edition is no longer supported by 10.8.2

I just reconnected my WD My Book World Edition to my wireless internet connection hub. In trying to set up Time machine, it tells me that the server I am trying to connect to is no longer supported?
    What is the best solution?

Might be a solution at the Western Digital site. Here is one help article:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3561/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzU 4MTE0NTQ4L3NpZC9pbDRZTGRnbA%3D%3D
Possible you need to upgrade firmware on the drive? You didn't say which version of the drive you have.

  • Time Machine does not recognize my WD my book world edition network drive

I just updated to mountain lion and now my WD my book world edition network drive is not recognized by time machine. I get a message that says " The network backup does not support the required AFP features. Does anyone have a fix for this.

That device is unsuitable for use with Time Machine.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or a mini-tower (802.11ac) AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base station supports Time Machine, not any previous model.

  • Time Machine / WD My Book World Edition (white light) / Multiple Users

I've been scouring the web for information about backing up several users to a single My Book World Edition (White Light) using Time Machine and haven't had much success.
Does anyone out there know if it's possible? I've read that you can do this (different users/passwords) on the time capsule but I'm wondering if there's a procedure to allow you to do the same thing on the Western Digital drive.
    Thanks!

I'm wondering if she logs onto the wd_backup user name (required for time machine to see the WD drive) and uses time machine, will her files overlap my existing back up files?
No.  Each Mac's backups will be in a separate sparse bundle disk image.  That's done by Time Machine (not WD), using a hardware identifier on the Mac it's running on -- not user accounts, disk names, or even computer names.
I've read that using a time capsule, you're able to have different computers back up to the device with their own passwords.
You can set up a TC that way, but you don't have to.  I suspect very few folks do that.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #33 for details and considerations of backing-up multiple Macs.  Note especially the pink box there.

  • Airport Extreme and WD My Book World Edition

    Hello,
I am considering buying an airport extreme, but I am fairly new to the product and had some questions about it.
I have a WD My Book World Edition wireless hard drive, is it possible to plug the hard drive into the airport extreme via ethernet cable? Or does the airport extreme have to be connected to the wireless modem.
I already have a wireless network setup with a linksys wireless router, I am just confused on if I need to plug the airport extreme into the wireless router or the modem.
The reason I am asking this question is because I also want to be able to stream music to my home theater receiver, and my theater receiver is in my office, and the wireless router is in a different room. I'd like to be able to have my WD My Book located in my office, as opposed to next to the wireless router.
hopefully this made some sense and someone can answer my questions! I just want to be 100% clear before I buy anything!
    thank you!

    Welcome to the discussions, ithew!
If you want to be able to stream AirTunes from your computer to your stereo, you need an AirPort Express, not an AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Express would be configured to "join" your wireless network for this function.
The AirPort Express does not support a hard drive at it's USB port if that is where you were thinking of plugging in the WD device. The WD drive would stay connected to your network just as it is now.

  • Time Machine Does not find My Book World Edition NAS

I have been using Time Machine for over 2 years with a WD My Book World Edition NAS (White Light WD10000H1NC).  Recently the backups stopped.  When I tried to reconnect to the drive I found that I could not located the drive in TimeMachine with what I thought was the backup drive name.  Currently when I open Time Machine there is a share drive in list, but with a different name than I expected (WD_Backup on "bestback-backup") and when I try to connect to the drive it fails.  I know the NAS drive is working correctly as I can connect to the drive in finder by mounting via "Connect to Server" with the name smb://bestback  and I can see all my public folders.  When I look in Finder I see two share drives, bestback and bestback-backup.  However I cannot connect to "bestback-backup" and not sure how.  I believe my issue is that the original backup, must be on the share drive bestback-backup, but not sure how to reconnect or remount it.  I have gone into the WD configuration and confirmed the drive is named "bestback".

I have the NAS mounted in finder and can access the drive files in "Public" with no issue.  I can't run any DiskUtility on that drive. I also can't see the TimeMachine backup folders which leads me to believe TimeMachine is not looking for that specific drive.
Basically TimeMachine shows an option to connect to a "share" drive that I can't seem to mount.  That same name appears in finder sidebar, but is "unmounted".  I have tried mounting this other drive as a server using the name shown, but without any luck.
Not sure how to mount this other drive, which may be a folder or related to the original NAS.  It seems like the NAS is partitioned or I need to mount to a specific folder within the NAS?

  • Airport Extreme + My Book World Edition via Ethernet?

    Hi,
Simple question - if i bought a Western Digital My Book World edition which has an Ethernet out port - could i connect it to the Airport Extreme to share with all my devices?
If so would it have any advanced over buying the cheap(ist) Western Digital and connecting just by USB?
    Thanks

If that drive is usable by your devices when connected directly to them via Ethernet, then yes that would work.
You would be relying on the file sharing services of that drive... not the file sharing services of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).

  • WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB

I have been transferring home DV tapes to DVD and putting everything on my 320gb external drive which is quickly running out of space. I purchased a WD My Book Essential Edition 1TB USB 2.0 but I'm hesitating opening it - as I didn't really research types of HDs - it just seemed like a good deal (it was on sale and I got an additional 10% off).... should I open it and use it or return it and get something else?
    thanks!

    Hi valleen
I agree with rkaufmann87, if you were just backing up the Internal HD then the USB drive would be just fine. But if your going to move large files off the Internal HD and access then on a regular basis, get yourself a FireWire HD.

  • My Book World Edition - How to add files?

I just bought the My Book World Edition and I love it so far. Plugged in and showed up right away. HOWEVER, I can't find a way to add files so that I can use it like any other hard drive I have. Only the shared folders show up.
    Help?

Did you format the drive? If not, that might be the problem. Use Disk Utility to format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Then check the info panel (Ctl-Click on drive icon and select "Get Info") to make sure permissions are set for you to read and write.
