Trouble Joining Office Network Thru Airport

Hi. If someone can solve this problem I will be forever grateful!
Our company just moved into a new office building. We're sharing office space with another company that has a T1 connection wired throughout the office. At my desk is an ethernet jack that when I plug into I'm connected to the internet.
This is where the problem is...we have a few MacBooks that we share files with a lot, and as well as one that's dedicated to our database, so we need to maximize our ethernet port. We have a cable running from the ethernet port into our Airport Extreme, which we connect off from wirelessly, and my main computer is running hardwired from the internet-OUT spot in the Airport.
With this setup, we can access our files no problem within our company, but we are unable to see the other office mates on our network, or on iTunes sharing.
I'm sure there's a setting in the Airport Extreme that will allow us to do this, I just don't know where it is. Can someone tell me how to make it so this setup will allow us to access the other computers in the office and their iTunes shares as well?
Thanks

You just need to set up the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as a bridge...
To set up the AEBS as a bridge, temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Admin Utility (found in /Applications/Utilities), make these settings:
Network tab
- Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
- Apply the new settings.

  • Should I be able to see other peoples airports on my network thru airport utility?

After upgrading to Lion, when I pull up airport utility, It gives me a list of peoples time cap[sules and airport extremes. This is on my home network. I'm not referring to people's wifi networks in my neighborhood, but actual apple routers listed under my airport utility. Why did this stat happening?

Yes, chances are excellent that they cannot, especially if the following three things are followed: 1) The most obvious is to not give out the password, 2) The wireless is protected with either WPA or WPA2 standard encryption, and 3) That you use a non-dictionary password for that wireless password.

  • I'm having trouble with internet radio thru Airport Express with itunes 7.

The new itunes 7 is working okay for me except for one thing. For some reason I have a buffering problem between my computer and my Airport Express when I feed internet radio to it. Playing it through my computer speakers works just fine. Normal itunes music files seem to be okay either way. This started happening when I installed itunes 7. I have reset the base station and it hasn't improved things. Is it just coincidence? Anyone got any clues?
    Powerbook 15"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Same problem here. Some streams are playing correctly and others play in a strange manner, like a mix.
I also got this problem with iTunes 7. I hope that Apple will fix it in a future update so that I can listen to every station over my Airport Express.

  • Trouble joining home network

For some reason as soon as I installed 10.5 I cannot connect to my home network, it is selected as one of my preferred networks but does not automatically find it when I turn on my computer. When I look at my network preferences it says I have a self assigned IP and may not be able to connect to the internet. When I select my network and enter my password it says I am connected with 4 bars but when I open safari it says I am not connected to the internet. This is very frustrating because it works at school/girlfriendshouse/anywhere else but my house. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Is this type of set-up possible - private and public network with Airport

We have an office network with Airport. We have internet with a cable modem with routers plugged to it. The network is not now shared with anyone outside the business.
But would it be possible to add a public component to our setup that would give others access to the internet but never, never, never allow them to enter/see/ mess with the private side?
    Tim

Sorry to intrude, I came across this thread while I was looking for some other information and thought that there needed to be a point of clearification to identify some major security vulnerabilities.
With the current config, Cable Modem->Wan port of Router A->Router B plugged into LAN port on Router A
    1. Traffic from Router A would see all traffic sent from router B out to the internet, if I was able to sniff the traffic on router A then I would see everything that router B was passing to the internet...not good idea if Router A is public, (traffic would not be encrypted since this is a hard line pass to the cable modem).
    2. Router A will always be able to see the interface of router B (have to have it this way to perform the passing of IP traffic from one router to the other.) This means that router B will be open for brute force login attempts and any other vulnerabilities that the router might carry, again since this is being accessed from a publicly accessible network it would be hard to stop from happening in todays world.
    3. Router B subnet - If you NAT all the IP's behind router A on it's on subnet (which would include Router B). Uunless router B truly has two interfaces (internal and external) you would not be able to use different subnets and expect to pass traffic all the way to the cable modem because it would not know how to get there.
Again, this post is not meant to cause annomosity, it is to help educate.
I personally think that the safer bet is to get a second hi-speed connection, physical seperation in this case is the best way to go, saves you the worry of getting attacked or snooped on, and keeps your private information safe from the public...unless that is something that you are willing to risk sharing.

  • Connecting to wireless thru airport express (joined home network)

I have a wireless router in my bedroom, which is the source of internet connection.
I use the airport express to join this connection, and this airport express is now plugged in my living room.
the name of the wireless connection is "my_name room".
the name of the airport express is "my_name airport express".
i cannot locate the "my_name express" on my devices, including macbook pro, and iphone 5.
i can only locate "my_name room".
is this normal for using airport express as an extension of a network ?
    thanks in advance.

What are the benefits of extending a wireless network then ?
Unfortunately, you are not extending your wireless network since the Express is not compatible with your router for that purpose.
The benefits to extending a wireless network...assuming that your Express is working with a compatible wireless router.....are the same as "joining" with the added plus that the Express is also providing more wireless signal, so the wireless signal strength will be provided over a greater area.
Another question is, the only purposes of joining a wireless network are for AirTunes, and remote printing ?
As I mentioned above, the Express can be used for AirTunes or a remote printer when it is configured to "join" a network. It can only "extend" a wireless network when it is used with another Apple product. In that case, the Express is configured to "extend a wireless network".

  • Airport Express joined to network but not discoverable

I have two airport expresses - an older b/g model and a newer draft n model - both on their latest firmwares.
December last year I joined them both to the wireless network in a new place and both worked fine.
I hadn't used either since December - so there my have been some airport utility and itunes updates since then.
Today I plugged either one in and it synched with a green light immediately - however neither could be found in itunes or airport utility.
I have tied configuring them - both wirelessly and via ethernet cable.
I have tried a hard reset to restore to factory default and then configure them.
They can only be found by airport utility and iTunes under these circumstances:
    1. After a hard reset to factory settings - awaiting initial configuration
    2. Configured as it's own wireless network
    3. Joined to the existing wireless network via ethernet only (WiFi off).
If I join to existing wireless network as I need to do the device is not discoverable.
I input the correct credentials and then the device reboots - at this stage it drops out of the airport utility and never gets picked up by it even though it reboots with a green sync light, indicating it is now joined to the network.  Only way to still see it after reboot is if it is still attached to computer over ethernet. As soon as ethernet is disconnected it dropsout.
I would think it was not broadcasting a wireless signal were it not for the fact that it does work when set up as its own wireless network, and also were it not for the fact that it was doing it to two different airport expresses, both different models.
I have two laptops - one on leopard and the other on snow leopard and still no luck- so I don't think it is an OS update issue.
I have never had trouble configuring AEX joined to an existing network before and they both were working December last year.
So in summary: two different model AEX displaying the same behaviour, two mac laptops with different OS' used to configure, tried wireless and ethernet configurations, reboot after configuration gives green sync light but is not discoverable in itunes or airport utility. Airports ARE discoverable when broadcasting their own wireless network or joined to network over ethernet only. Airports are discoverable after hard reset to factory settings but become invisible when correctly joined to an existing wireless network after reboot.
Please help - it is driving me crazy!!!

I'm not trying to set it up as a network.
I just want to be able to play iTunes on my hifi.
The Airport Express is currently sat right next to an Huawei HG532 router with a solid green light.
However both iTunes and Airport utility says: "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport Wireless devices.... make sure it's plugged in etc...."
Never had a problem before, but i've just plugged it in after a 4 month absence.

  • Can my airport express join my network via Belkin Router?

    What's up everyone?
I have a question regarding my apple airport express. Is there any way to get this my airport express to join my belkin network? My current network is being run by my Belkin N Wireless Modem-Router(model# F5D8633au4A)and i can't seem to get my airport to join it properly. Everytime i try to install it, it seems to mess with the signal my laptop gets and the AEX doesn't even connect to the network. The best i've gotten is it shows up on itunes, but i can't select the remote speakers.
For now, i just want my AEX to be able to join wirelessly so i can use airtunes, but would it also be possible to set it up so that i can plug my xbox into it so it can go online?
Anyone have any experience setting up the AEX with a belkin router?

    Hi:
I do not have a Belkin router, but have basically the same problem using a Linksys 54G 802.11n router.
I can setup my HP laptop/printer/router as a wirelss network, but cannot get my AE to join that network as a client, wirelessly. IF, I have an Ethernet cable connected from the router to the AE, I can configure the AE, get the solid green LED on it, etc., and play music out of external speakers, but all falls apart whn I disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router to the AE, even though Airport Utility has things setup as a wireless connection.
Have you tried setting up an Apple ad-hoc network from the PC/laptop to the AE and speakers ? See if you can do that. If so, you can play music wirelessly thru the AE/speakers from iTunes (the LED will be a flashing Amber). The trick is that you have to wait about 1-2 minutes duing the config in order for the AE to establish the connection where it (the ad-hoc network) shows up in your system tray network list, when the icon is clicked. The Appel ad-hoc network will have a name like Apple XXXXXX, where the XXXXXX are 6 (of the 12) digits from the AE's MAC address (listed on its label).
If this works, my guess is that the AE is OK, and the problem is getting your AE to join your already existing Belkin network (in my case, LinkSys network).
I was at one of "Apple Genius Bars" last night probing this problem, and they feel that this is most likely a compatability problem between the AE and non-apple routers...though I do not feel that there should be a problem, or they shouldn't be selling the product claiming that it works with non-apple products.
The guys at Apple suggested that I call Apple for Tech Support at:
    1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
There shouldn't be a charge, though the guys at the Genius Bar said that if they try to charge, to raise a big stink over the phone since the
Apple product is not working as claimed !
Another issue: What level of encryption are you using with your router ?
    WEP-64, WEP-128, WPA, WPA2 ???
This greatly affects how easy (or hard) it is to add the AE to your existing network. From what I have learned, the lower the level of encryption, the harder it is to add the AE to the network, since it is an older, less-capatible standard.
Let me know if you find any answers...

  • Can't get Airport to join a network

    Hi, all -
I have a G5 PowerPC running the latest and greatest. I connect to the Internet via a 2Wire modem. My G5 is connected via Ethernet. All is OK, except...
...when I try to join my modem's network, I get either a bad password or timeout message. Any ideas? This is inhibiting my ability to configure and use my Airport Express, among other things.
I suppose that I could have a problematic prefs file somewhere. Can anyone tell me which files I could delete to fix this?
    Thanks...

+I'm essentially trying to create an internet connection point in a different room by wirelessly connecting the Airport to my Qwest modem.+
Thanks for the clarification, but as I mentioned, the Airport Extreme cannot perform this function because the ethernet ports on the Extreme are not enabled when you configure it to join another network. It's unfortunate that Apple includes this option in the setup utility, because it's non-functional with the AirPort Extreme.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express "n" version can "join a wireless network" and you do have the option to enable the ethernet port in this configuration. But neither the AirPort Extreme or the Time Capsule (which is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive) allow this type of functionality.
Bottom line, the AirPort Extreme won't do what you want unless you can connect it to your Qwest modem/router using using an ethernet cable, or if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable, you might look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. In fact, if your goal is to only provide an ethernet connection to the DirectTV DVR, you don't even need the AirPort Extreme to do this unless you want it to perform other routing functions.

  • Trouble joining network

I have two systems: One is an older powerbook G4 running 10.4 and the other is a new MacBook Pro running 10.6.
The older one can't join the network. The newer one - no problem.  I get an error on the Powerbook "There was an error joining the Airport network ...."

Older macs don't support the newer protocols and encryption modes. Be sure your network is setup to be backwards compatible. i am of course assuming you are trying to join wirelessly.

  • Join existing network option missing from Airport Extreme

I am resetting an Airport Extreme because of network issues (not the airport side). It used to join an existing network which is still there. but now, when i go to set it up, the only options are Create a Wireless Network, Participate in a WDS network, and Extend a Wireless Network. I can not extend because of the way our network is set up. Can anyone tell me how I can get the plain old Join and Existing Network option back? I miss it...

emcfins, Welcome to the discussion area!
Unlike the AirPort Express (AX), the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have the ability to join a wireless network as a client.
The only way the AEBS can wirelessly join a network is if it is configured to participate in a WDS network (802.11g mode) or extend a Wireless Network (802.11n mode).

  • Joining a network - Airport Express - Comcast

I gave my in-laws an airport express and ripped their 300+ cd collection in an attempt to simplify their stereo and help the enjoy more of their music.
    That was 6 months ago.
I have been trying to get the AE to join their existing network (Comcast modem and wireless access point all in one) without disturbing their existing settings (many siblings coming and going using their network and many people to update on the new settings for their devices)
I have tried every wireless network setting in the "manual setup" mode of Airport utility. I have tried setting up on an iphone, ipad, and now Macbook Air.
I am at witts end and do not want to go get an Airport Base Station (which I have at my house and works flawlessly).
I am trying to set up client mode - just want to activate airplay to feed their stereo on their existing network to be able to play itunes from their PC in another area of the house and from iPods and iPads.
I am getting "unexpected errors" and "cannot find the device after restarting" - what am I doing wrong???
thanks for any help you can provide.

What should I be looking for specifically when I log into the Comcast modem/router?
Sorry, but I haven't used any Comcast products, so I cannot say.  There must be some way to get at the internal settings to take a look at them though. This usually involves entering a default password for the modem/router into your browser. Wireless security settings are unfortunately not standarized.
Make sure that the wireless network name consists only of normal letters and numbers....and no special characters like apostrophes, dollar signs, asterisks, etc. Limit the length of the name to no more than 12 characters or less. Avoid any blank spaces in the name.
Same rules for the wireless password.
The way to verify if you are having a security issue is to test by temporarily turning off the wireless security on the modem/router. Then try to configure the Express to join the network that way. If it joins....and I'm betting it will....you will know that you have a wireless security settings/compatibility issue to deal with.
Use AirPort Utility 5.6 for any Express configuration if you can.
Can I get out of this without buying an Airport Extreme or another Airport Express to act as thair wireless signal?
    That remains to be seen.

  • Joining existing 820.11g network with AirPort Express

    Hello all!
I'm hoping someone can answer this, as I'm about to tear what's left of my hair out - or throw the new Airport Express out the window!
I have an existing D-link 2100 AP (802.11g 2.4ghz) access point. It connects to my wired LAN and serves a few wireless units (wife's PC, iPad, iPhone4, AppleTV2) flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a Airport Express with the intention of hooking it up to the stereo in the kitchen and use it for AirPlay.
Whatever I do I can't seem to get it to find and connect to my WLAN!
I can find it in the AirPort utility and configure it, but when it restarts after config it never connects to the WLAN. If I hook it up over ethernet with my switch I get access to it again, and it complains it can't find my WLAN.
When I configure it to "join existing network" I can sometimes see my SSID in the dropdown box, sometimes not. I have the correct encryption settings and password, and all other Apple devices connects right away.
The DLINK log doesn't show any entries with the AirPort Express MAC adress
Tried turning off the "G" mode, doesn't help.
Tried changing channels, doesn't help (but the AE seems to notice the changed channel, weirdly enough)
Tried setting it as completly open network, WPA, WPA2, Personal/Enterprise doesn't help.
Only thing I've not tried is to extend the existing network with WSD, as my understanding is it doesn't really work with non-Apple products - maybe I'm wrong?
I suppose getting a Apple Extreme base station would sort all this out, but does someone have any thoughts on this problems before I give up the D-link that's worked flawlessly for several years?
    Thanks!
    Patrik

    Hi,
I had a similar problem setting up the Airport Express through by existing router. The problem in the end was the encryption. I had to do a manual setup (in the airport utility). My router has a 10 digit hex key, and uses WEP; this requires the express to use WEP 40bit. Once I'd done that it was ok. I can stream to the express via my router from my iPhone4
Also, when it had the wrong settings I had to do a factory reset to get the apple network to appear again. The instructions for this are wrong in the manual. You have to turn the express off, hold in the reset button and turn on. Keep the button pressed and the light starts flashing amber quickly. Keep held in until this stops flashing, and release the reset button. Then you need to wait for around a minute before you see the device in the airport utility. If it's still not there, manually change you network to the apple one, if it's in the list of available networks in whatever OS you're using.
