Trouble joining windows PC to Mac PDC

I am new to Mac but been working with Windows Networking for years. I plan to replace all our office PC's to Mac's but it will take time. I have followed the instructions in the Open Directory Administrator Guide on joining PC's to a Mac OD PDC. I can't join a Vista or XP to Mac PDC domain. It seems so simple but I get errors. "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service" (on Vista PC)
The OD log shows...
"This process has FORKED and you cannot use this COREFUNCTIONILITY PROCESS, You must EXEC()" (xserve)
SMB is on OD is primary, using PDC functionality.
Help!
TIA

Thanks for the reply.
I contacted Apple support and the issue is resolved.
I had the Leopard server installed in a "standard" configuration and then added SMB support. Apple says that this can't be done.
I re-installed the Leopard in "advanced" configuration and added SMB and it now works great!

  • Joining Windows client to Leopard PDC domain

Leopard Server 10.5.2 providing OD, AD PDC, DHCP, DNS, AFP, SMB all on and "running"
    XServe Intel
Mainly Windows XP clients but also some OS X clients
I am trying to set up a Leopard server to host a domain on our internal company LAN. I have followed the tutorials in "Mac OS X Server Essentials 10.5" and also referred to the "Open Directory Admin Guide" as well as the "Network Services Admin Guide" and am stuck in a few places.
One issue I am having is trying to join an XP client to the domain so that I can use account login and home folder access which is on the Leopard server. My 10.5 client machine can login and access the home folder fine but when I try to join the XP machine I get the following error on the PC:
"A domain controller for the domain mycompany.com could not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly."
I then click on Details and get the following:
"The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain mycompany.com:
The error was "DNS name does not exist."
    (error code 0x0000232B RCODENAMEERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for ldap._tcp.dc.msdcs.mycompany.com"
DHCP seems to be handing out IP addresses fine but does not hand out LDAP info. e.g. My Leopard client cannot get the LDAP via DHCP even though this is configured (according to the "Essentials" book) in the Directory Utility, it will only see the Domain controller/LDAP if I manually enter the info into it's Directory Utility. I'm wondering if this has something to do with PC not finding the domain?
What concerns me is the lack of configuration in DNS - so far I have only set up a primary zone for the domain mycompany.com with the correct primary zone name: mycompany.com. and nameserver: xserve1.mycompany.com. as well as a machine record within the zone for the server, machine name: xserve1 and IP address: 192.168.0.1 (the relevant reverse info is ok)
I have seen some discussions online that indicate I need to enter more DNS info e.g. an LDAP service record etc. but there is no mention of this in the Directory admin manual under setting up a PDC. Is this true and if so can anyone advise me as to how to enter these in Server Admin?
I am a complete beginner to server admin and command line tools but would really appreciate any help in the matter!
    Thanks

Hi Leif - thanks for the reply,
Maybe "broadcasting" in terms of the DHCP response was the wrong word for me to use but I see what you are saying...
I have tried this Terminal command and got the following but can't see any reference to NetBIOS/WINS server address, just the scope and node info I currently have set. The WINS/SMB server is on the same xserve unit (192.168.0.1) and have tried joining with no scope and node settings as well as node type=H.)

  • Join Windows PC with Mac Server domain

    Hello
We are having a Mac OS X Server and few Microsoft PCs.
We want to join all PCs into domain of OS X Server.
Windows is showing error after entering domain name : Active Directory Domain Controller could not be contacted.
Please let me know the solution for this issue
    Thanks

  • Cannot join Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC domain

    Frustrated...
Yesterday, I was able to successfully add 5 Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC Domain (lets call it xyz.lan). Those machines show up as valid computer accounts in Workgroup Mananger (PC1$, PC2$, etc.). Users are able to logon to those Windows XP machines using their Mac Open Directory user account and access their home folder, etc.
This morning, for some reason, I can no longer join XP machines to the Mac PDC domain. On both PCs I tried it with, I receive a "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service" on the Windows XP machine. I am using the diradmin user account and password to supply credentials. Same exact process as yesterday (which worked fine).
A couple things of note. I made sure the PDC domain is set to Enabled for allowing Guest Access and that WINS Registration is also enabled. Authentication is lso set for NTLMv2 and NTLM for enabled. I also tried rebooting the server this morning as well. It's running 10.5.4. This was not an upgrade from 10.4, but a fresh install of Leopard.
No changes were made on the server between yesterday and today that I am aware of.
Looking at the /var/log/samba/log.smbd log, there are thousands of entries for "This process has forked and you cannot use this corefunctionality process, You must EXEC()" etc... The log also shows failures when the XP machine tries to join to the domain. Log entries are listed showing, "pdbdefault_createuser: failed to add new account for 'PC6$'". Adding PC6$ manually via Workgroup Manager doesn't help either.
Any idea what to check next? I read so many varied things about Leopard and SMB not quite playing nice. People mentioning they had to go through all sorts of hurdles to get this working. Any advise is welcome.

Any news about this? I'm having the same problem trying to join a Vista box to the domain. Here are the logs:

  • Trouble installing Windows 8.1 with Boot Camp

I'm having an issue installing Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp on one of the new MacBook Pros (late 2013).  After sever troubles (and not a few tribulations) fighting with the stupid Windows installer program (couldn't Microsoft just let me download a freakin' ISO?) I got the installer running after creating the partition, but at the end of the Windows install, I get:
Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed.
Googling around for a solution I found several references to UEFI problems, along with a couple different procedures that were claimed to work.  Unfortunately, these procedures were pretty lengthy and require several third party tools -- and I'm not positive they're even applicable because none of them dealt with the newest model of MacBook Pro.
So, can anyone out there point me towards a procedure that's known to work with the new models?
    Thanks.

OK... Finally solved the problem during my winter break... took almost 1.5 months Actually we users are creating the problem... Bootcamp is OK... our late 2013 Mac is OK... but Apple is't as it's not giving us the solution Now let me clear concisely what actually occurs behind the problem.
When you open bootcamp to install Windows, you get a popup window. Then you click continue... then you choose the options among the three which suits to your intention. Then if you chose to create a installation disk or/and download the Windows Support Software, bootcamp does so. Then the nextPROBLEMETIC STEP comes! Yes! you got it! This step creates the actual problem: Partitioning the hard disk for installing Windows. Before bootcamp starts partitioning, a simple POPUP WINDOW will inform you whether you will get the f*cking "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed" message or not during your windows installation! Andddd... the popup window is here:
Soooo... super duper simple fact: if you don't get this popup window, you're going to get that error. Because this HELPER TOOL will simulate proper environment for installing Windows in your Mac
    Now be sure:
    1. You just have one partion in your Hard Disk before partitioning it into two for installing Windows
    2. This PARTITIONING SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BY BOOTCAMP if you want your Windows in EFI mode. The way jarvil told us is for BIOS mode. I'm not going to explain here what is EFI and what is BIOS. Simply keep in mind that EFI is latest, better and faster for booting your Windows
That's it guys! If you don't get that popup window, follow the instructions:
    1. Turn your hard disk into a single partition by using Bootcamp/Disk Utility. Bootcamp is recommended
    2. Take a flash drive, format it, and then open Bootcamp
    3. Choose all the three options:
Create a Windows 7 or later vertion install disk
Download the latest Windows Support software from Apple
Install or remove Windows 7 or later version
Yes! We are going to create a new installation disk...
    4. I know you are clever enough to guess what should you do now!  Just enter your password when you get THAT SPECIAL POPUP WINDOW!Then Mac will restart after partitioning your hard disk!
    5. Do noting untill the windows installation window comes
    6. Go forward pressing Next, putting serial, and accepting the agreement that we never read
    7. Select advanced installation... I mean the second option
    8. Now find the partition named BOOTCAMP
    9. Select it and Format it!
    10. Click Next
You are done! Your Mac will install windows without any problem or error message   After installation, if you find that your drivers aren't working, go to the installation disk and open the folder named BOOT CAMP. Open the exe named Setup... Install the drivers and restart after completion... Your Mac now owns Windows in EFI mode like mine!
That's all I have known killing my winter break! Thanks everyone! Take care!

  • How to use window programs on mac

im new at using mac and would like to download a program online, that is only compatible with windows.
what do i need, and how can i get the program to work on my mac?

windows programs will only run in a windows environment, and Mac applications will only run in a Mac environment.
    To do what you want, you need to install a windows environment on your Mac like parallels;
    http://forums.parallels.com/
and then install into it, a windows OS like XP, and then you can run your windows program; which seems a lot of trouble to me, but you can do this.
On the other hand you could just buy a windows laptop, or find an application (that's what Macs call programs) that does the same thing that is written for the Mac.

  • Network - Windows connecting to Mac printer.

I'm having trouble getting Windows XP to print to the Mac shared printer - It says its getting the drivers, and then the printer shows up in options, but when I print to it, the printer just never prints.
How do I get it to actually print?
    Brian

Well, I finally got everything working last night, thanks to (a) the wonderfully clear step-by-step directions by iFelix (although they should add a quick word about port :631); very helpful comments from this forum; and sheer persistance in dealing with Windows XP.
    Here's what I did wrong:
    1. Omitted and then mis-typed the port number after the IP address.
    2. Didn't check the signal strength of the 802.11g network (it was strong enough to see the Mac, but bizzarly not strong enough to see the printer attached to the Mac). Everything worked fine as soon as got an increased signal level.
    3. Didn't read far enough ahead in the instructions and downnloaded the drivers for the Lexmark Z35 instead of using the Apple drivers as recomended by iFelix.
    4. Forgot that under Windows you have to "Uninstall" - you can't just drag something into "Recycle" - so I couldn't understand for the longest time why XP kept finding the Lexmark drivers even after I'd emptied the Recycle bin.
Bottom line. "Thank you, iFelix" for your very detailed instructions. I only wish that Apple would make their own "Help" as clear and detailed.

  • Switching from Windows XP to Mac OS X Tiger on a home built Desktop PC?

I was wondering and I cannot seam to find any topics on it so. I want to know if it is possible to take my Desktop I built mainly for Windows and put Mac OS X Tiger on it?
    Desktop Spc's:
Mother Board: Gigabyte Intel Socket 775
    Processor: Intel P4 3.4 Mega-Hertz
    Front Side Bus: 800 Mega-Hertz
    Hard Drive: 40 Gig SATA
    Ram: 1 Gig
    Video Card: Nvidia 6600GT
I just want to find out if it is possible. I was reading an artical and found out that the Mac OS X Tiger already has many of the things that the new windows vista has. So I thought that I would ask to see if it is possible. Thank you in advanced.

There are plenty of topics on this very question which gets asked fairly often depending on your search criteria.
    Short answer is no.
The OS X license agreement provides for installing and using it on a single Apple branded/labeled computer only.
The only way to install Tiger on a PC is via a hack of some sort and even if the hack is successful, very little on your PC would be supported and the overall performance would not be worth the trouble.
    > I was reading an artical and found out that the Mac OS X Tiger already has many of the things that the new windows vista has.
What you read is correct and it took Microsoft 5 years to come up with what amounts to a copy of OS X. I read there are 10 separate/different versions of Vista to choose from? How on earth is the average person (or even the above average person) expected to wade through all that confusing mess?
Apple is getting ready to launch a new OS X version called Leopard this spring which will place Windows even father behind.
If you want to run Tiger and Vista, purchase an Intel Mac which gives you the ability to run both operating systems natively on a single computer.

Unfortunately you cannot swap from DW CS5 Win to DW CS5 Mac.
Your serial number is specific to Windows and cannot be used on a Mac.
You would have to pay to upgrade to CS6 for Mac (known as a crossgrade)

Or join the Cloud, pay a monthly fee and get Dreamweaver CC. Cloud software (CC version) can be used on Windows and/or Macs without paying any extra.

  • Illustrator (windows) Vs. Illustrator (Mac)

Yeasterday I get the request, I need Illustrator CS Mac (.ai) version file format. But I didnt experienced Mac and never used it.
Just my question is, is Illustrator windows and Illustrator Mac file format (.ai) different or same?
Can I open illustrator (.ai) file format saved in Mac to windows? or vice verse.
    Thanks.
    RIcky

The file format works the same on both systems - you might have trouble with fonts that are used in the design (if any). Fonts - apart from OpenType fonts aren't the same on Mac and Windows.

    (1) You should not need to use Windows on your Mac unless you want to do so.
I'm unsure what a "luminex camera" is, but you can probably use your Mac's iPhoto app with it.
Launching iPhoto and search iPhoto > Help for "import" (without the quote marks.)
If you're still having trouble, this article may give you some ideas:
iPhoto '11: Import photos or video from a digital camera
    (2) You can only "download Windows"  if you have bought it from a download source.
Once you have an usable (downloaded or disk-based) Windows installation, Apple's
Windows on a Mac Support page explains using Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp.
VMWare, Virtual Box, or Parallels Windows are other alternatives.  This article may be of interest:

  • How do I change my iPod Touch from a Windows to a Mac?

I recently bought a Mac, to replace my PC.  I have a 2nd generation iPod running the latest (4.3.3 I think).  I have transfered all my files from my Windows to my Mac through USB, and all the files are also sitting on my Mac.  However, when I insert my iPod to the Mac, it can't sync apps without erasing the data on my iPod.  How do I do it without erasing it?  I have it backed up on my Mac and PC.  I also have a brother with a 4th generation iPod.  I assume the soliution would be the same?  THanks!!

Sorry didn't mean to make this the correct answer
What do you mean?  This is what I get:
"Are you sure you want to sync apps? All existing apps and their data on the iPod “Connor’s iPod Touch” will be replaced with apps from this iTunes library."
