Trouble Making PDFs from PageMaker 7.0

Hi. I need help understanding how to convert PageMaker 7.0 files into PDFs. I've got SOME technical proficiency in the area, but not much.
Note that I am using a trial version of PM7 (perhaps the problem), running in Classic Mode (System 9.2), on a Powerbook G4 which otherwise runs on 10.4.11. Acrobat reader 5.0 and Distiller 5.05 are also present I believe, but Reader and Distiller confuse me a bit as it seems I'm constantly having at least Reader pushed to my system from the net when I try and access content, and I'm not completely clear on how they relate to each other and when to use what. I may have installed Distiller a long time ago when using FrameMaker for some work I was doing at the time.
I should ask by the way whether or not PM7 files are supposed to have an extension. I think not because if I remember correctly that wasn't required until OSX, but please correct if I'm wrong. For what it's worth, none of my files are showing them.
1) To help troubleshoot, I've created a very simple test page with no complex elements––just the single word "test" in a common type face.
2) I've selected File > Export > Adobe PDF
3) This opens the PDF options pane. Though I'm not entirely sure what I SHOULD be doing here, I've set the PDF style to [Print], rather then [On Screen] as I want an actual file, and the Job Name for Distiller to "Print". Under "Edit Job Options", on the "General" tab, "Compatibility" is set to "Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3)". On the "Fonts" tab, I've selected "Embed all fonts", as I want the document to show properly regardless of where it is viewed, and "Warn and Continue" when embedding fails. Obviously there are a number of other settings which I assume are secondary given the simple test I'm trying to carry out, but again please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
From here, I've tried selecting the "Export" button. This calls up a destination and naming pane which is set to save the document to my desktop, append a ".pdf" extension to the file name, and view using Acrobat Reader 5.0.
When I hit "Save", a few dialog boxes flash so quickly that I'm unable to read them, then I get a greyed out message that reads:
"The PDF file was not created. This may be due to a user cancellation or an error in the PostScript file. Please check the log information located in: Macintosh HD:Users:(home folder name):Desktop:(filename).log. The viewer will not be loaded"
There is an "OK" button which, when pressed, returns me to the document.
With this in mind, I have tried a second approach with some success. Specifically, I have tried:
1) File > Print > Options and select "Write PostScript to file:", the program auto populates my filename with a ".ps" extension appended. Checking this changes the "Print" button to a "Save" button.
2) A "Save As" option also allows me to pick a destination.
Upon selecting the "Save" button, it creates a (filename).ps file on my desktop. When I open this, a progress bar opens that says "Converting PostScript File to PDF". A PDF file of the document then opens in Preview, which allows me to save it as a PDF. This generates a (filename).pdf file with an Adobe Reader icon, I think because I've made that my default PDF reader as opposed to Preview.
Unfortunately, some of the more specialized type faces in this PDF are not displaying. Does this relate to the issue of embedding? I always thought PDFs were totally "flat," much like a screen capture, but do you have to essentially tell it to be flat by embedding the type? Will the docs otherwise display differently on different machines depending upon what fonts are available?
That's about as far as I've gotten. Obviously, any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for everyone's time.

Okay . . .
1) Not sure, but I THINK double colon might mean that the two folders exist on the SAME level. I say this because when I follow that pathway, I find them in the same folder. Also, a quick Google search produced some results which seem to suggest as much, though they are a bit difficult for me to interpret. Among other things, it seems the symbol has different meanings in different languages.
2) In experimenting with the corrections you advised (which I'll report on last), I made another discovery. My default reader on the G4 is Version 9. When I instead open with Reader 5, files print much more quickly, though still with the same errors. If I move the files to my more current iMac, Reader 9 is then able to print quickly but, again, with the errors. Preview seems to print quickly and without error in both environments. The changes you suggested seem to have no bearing on these particular problems. Any idea what I might be facing here? Is it a crime to just use Preview for opening these docs once created?
3) While I now understand that Embedding only includes fonts used by the doc, does it pull from ALL the font locations "registered" in the font-locations menu (shown below) or do I have to somehow point it to one? Moreover, will it pull from an OSX library even though I'm running this in Classic, and have I done any harm or good by adding this?
Next, I apologize as this may have been addressed, but do I need to also select a library from the final drop-down menu on the Fonts tab in Job options (shown below) . . . or is this ONLY for use in setting the Embed Always/Never parameter?
4) Per your suggestion, I set the job to cancel when embedding fails with no apparent snags, so I guess that bodes well. And I disabled "Process DSC Comments." Below is a screen capture of both the results of a trial and the first level of all my setting panes. Hopefully all looks good. Some questions here too however.
Does disabling DSC change the results of the job in any way or just what's reported about it? I did a little reading, and at least one article advised AGAINST disabling DSC comments saying that it was needed for some important information including data on origination application, page orientation, and beginning and ending statements for the prologue.ps (and epilogue.ps?).
I should note that I am having some trouble with the PDFs opening on my NEWER Mac. When I set to open with Preview, the security filters stop me saying that they don't recognize the app. I may have some workarounds but it's all a bit dodgy. Could this have anything to do with removing the DSC comments? All seems to work fine with Acrobat as the reader, but as mentioned, I can't quite get proper results out of that app.
5) What are pro- and epilogue.ps files, and do I need them? Note that they are currently not included. Is that correct?
6) Should I allow my PS file to override my job options? Currently I do not.
Screen captures are as follows:

WATCHED FOLDERS

  • Making pdfs from pagemaker 6.5?

    1. when i try to use acrobat xi to make .pdfs from pagemaker 6.5 it goes as far as "Postscript output not saving - if I go into Printers -> Acrobat -> options the Include Postscript error handler is already checked - then I save it again and this time when I make a .pdf it works but I have to go through this every time for every .pdf
    2. when I go to acrobat xi to view and print the .pdf, sometimes when the screen comes up it doesn't respond to the OPen command and eventually has to be closed with Ctl/Alt/Delete -- somethines it opens and prints the .pdf and THEN won't respond to closing - either way, after Ctl/Alt/Delete I get an error message "Adobe Reader has stopped working properly - go to Adobe and download a newer version"

Pagemaker 6.5 is positively ancient, probably dating to late 1990s. I'm sure it's NOT compatible with Acrobat XI.
Here's a quote from Wikipedia about Pagemaker:
"Support for versions 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 is no longer offered through the official Adobe support system. Due to Aldus' use of closed, proprietary data formats, this poses substantial problems for users who have works authored in these legacy versions. The final version made available is PageMaker 7.0, released July 9, 2001, though updates have been released for the two supported platforms since."
Support from Adobe for Pagemaker 7 ceased in 2004.
The only realistic way to work with it is to buy a copy of InDesign CS6 (no discounts, perpetual license). Or you get a subscription to Creative Cloud which lets you download InDesign CS6. You can use InDesign CS6 or earlier to convert Pagemaker files to InDesign files. InDesign CC (the current version) no longer lets you convert Pagemaker files.
    Sorry for the bad news.

  • Error message when generating PDF from PageMaker

Hello, Unfortunately my client is still using PageMaker, despite the fact that it is no longer supported. Usually, I have no problem, but this is the error I have had today:
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: get; ErrorInfo: CharOffsets fonts/TimesNewRomanPSMT%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I'm on Vista, with Acrobat 8.1.3 and I'm printing to PDF from PageMaker 7. It seems to be a font problem, but I don't know how to solve it.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Finally managed to get the first two of the 3 books (making up the full publication) printed by doing "Export". The third one, which has been causing all the trouble has started giving me the font message again:
%%[ Error: typecheck; OffendingCommand: get; ErrorInfo: CharOffsets fonts/TimesNewRomanPSMT%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
I had ensured that the PDF box said "warn and continue".
I also get a dialog box telling me that only even pages will be printed, although I have specified even/uneven in the print dialog, and that blank pages will not be printed, although I have checked the blank page box.
Have tried to "Print" to PS and I have managed to generate a PS file with only a message telling me that Helvetica Neue could not be incorporated, which is fine. However, if I then try to create a PDF, I get the message above. Does this mean that my problem is with Distiller rather than in the file?
I have never had this problem before, and am baffled.

  • Exporting to PDF from PageMaker 7.0 in Classic

Since upgrading to 10.4 I have been unable to export to PDF from PageMaker 7.0.1. Adobe tech support says there is a problem with the Adobe Postscript driver. I have downloaded and installed a new Adobe PS driver but still get a message that says Adobe PS cannot be used because of an internal error. There is a code (-30581). Anybody having this problem?

Did Adobe say your copy might be corrupt, or there was a general incompatibility between AdobePS and your Classic version, or what please?
I don't happen to know a specific solutioni, but you might try this workaround, even though it sounds rather klunky until you're used to it:
Use Apple's own Desktop Printer Utility to built a virtual Desktop Printer using Translator Postscript, which will automatically be set as the default Classic printer, even though it doesn't actually appear on the Desktop, and should be accessible through either AdobePS or Apple's own LaserWriter driver.
Tell that to print to File, which should produce a .ps file that will double-click open in Preview, which can convert to PDF.

  • Fonts not embedding when making PDF from PM 7.1

In making a PDF from a PM file, I am having trouble getting the fonts to embed.  The interesting thing is that the fonts that are not embedding are Times Roman and Arial; other fonts are being embedded.  These fonts are installed and I have the "Embed Box" checked in the job type font options.
I'm using Windows XP SP2 OS and Acrobat 7.0 Pro.
Should the fonts be in a special folder ? Not sure what I'm mimssing here . . . .
I had SP3 installed for the OS and was having no trouble . . . . but then InDesign CS2 would not open PM files . . . At your recommendation I uninstalled SP3 but had to reinstall the OS which meant reinstalling PM and In Design CS2.
    Any suggestions?

PM7 will run just on WinSP3 provided it's a clean install. That is, you install WinXP SP2, clean, straight the setup disk, and then apply the service pack 3 update.  The usual problem is the unnecessary junk which Windows collects which screws things up.  See here: PM7 and WinXP SP3
I've now moved onto the Win7 and not even bothered with PM7, so I'm going on memory.
If InD CS2 says your PM files are corrupted, then I'd be worried.  It's time to run diagnostics and make sure you have backups.
Re:  the fonts, I suggest you check all your style palettes.
You could just create a PS file using any PS printer driver with the output as FILE:, and the load Distiller, input the PS file and create the PDF.  That's about as fool proof as it gets.
Also see my now ancient trouble shooter about creating PDFs using the Export… AdobePDF… macro here: Installing and Setting Up PM7's Export… Adobe PDF… using the “Application” CD-ROM   In this cae, make sure you are running PM7.01a - the update is here: PageMaker 7.0.1 update - English as there were some glytches when creating PDFs in the earlier macro.

  • Retaining active web links when distilling a PDF from PageMaker.

    OS Windows 7
I have been using my Acrobat 4 since, well, forever, and as I only needed to produce PDFs for customer proofs and printing Masters. However, it was never any good at retaining active web links that were created in the original PageMaker publication.
Now however, I need to get involved in creating survey forms, so I decided to check out Acrobat 11 with a view to upgrading.
But I've had no time for forms as even with Acrobat 11 I am still unable to create active hyperlinks that remain active after distilling into a PDF. I am pretty sure I am doing it right in PageMaker by establishing a source & destination for the particular image or text I wish to use as the clickable link, so what am I missing?
And is Acrobat 11 a good tool for creating attractive and utile customer feedback surveys that I plan on making available on my site?
    TIA
    Frank

I just made test PDFs from Pages 2 & 3 on Snow Leopard & Pages 4 on Leopard 10.5.8 (I don't have earlier versions of iWork installed on my G5 iMac with Leopard) & the links all remained active & opened the designated page in Safari each time. The only suggestion I have is to make sure you have the link set as a hyperlink before exporting as a PDF.

  • Creating a PDF from Pagemaker

When I attempt to create a PDF file of a magazine from Pagemaker on my desktop computer running Windows XP, I get a message file error.
When I move the same file to my laptop and go throuth the same process, no problem.
I have checked both computers and made sure that the settings are all the same, in Pagemaker and Adobe Acrobat 8.0, but nothing solves this problem.
The problem occurs after Acrobat 8.0 comes up, so has to be an Acrobat, not a Pagemaker problem.

Please repost in the PageMaker forum. Almost no one else will be using
    PageMaker.

  • Pagination Incorrect When Making PDF from Word

When making a pdf from Word using the "Fully Functional PDF" setting in Acrobat 8 Professional, I often get incorrect Acrobat pagination that changes to "1 of 1," 2 of 2," etc. instead of "1 of 2," 2 of 2."  Typically, I download both Acrobat and Windows updates, but today that did not help. The only way the pdf pagination is correct is if I choose the "Quick and Simple PDF" selection, but the graphics display is not satisfactory.
So my workaround today was to hard number the document. Anyone else have this problem? This has been an annoying and intermittent problem since we upgraded to MS Office 2007.

I suspect that you will find the same behavior if you print to paper (worth trying for a few pages). If so, then you are looking at a WORD bug. I know that one version of WORD had such a bug. But then, it also seems that MS put some hooks in the process for PDF creation, but that is only a conjecture. Anyway, be sure you have updated WORD. Acrobat does not change things, but gives you what was sent to it -- the reason I would strongly suggest this is probably a WORD issue. However, I rarely claim it says there is a bug in WORD, just highly likely.
This has been reported before and I think the update was the solution. You might want to do a bit of searching.

  • Trouble Opening PDFs from IE 11

I am having trouble opening pdf documents from a website (Federal Courts Court Records website) using my laptop using Adobe Xi (Version 11.0.8), Windows 7, and Internet Explorer 7.  When I try to open pdf document, I get message "Adobe PDF Access Denied".  I have tried to turn off "Enable Protected Mode" in Security Enhanced but does not work.  I have tried allowing displayed content to eliminate the message "Only secure content is displayed" but that does not solve problem.
I can open the documents on my son's laptop which has Adobe Reader XI (Version 11.0.3)
    Help please?

  • Making pdfs from tiffs, that are real long...

Can adobe professional X make pdfs from BIG oilfield well log tiffs.  It works well with small size tiffs, but have hit a brick wall with this size of a TIFF 8.4 inches wide by 449.5 inches long... Any ideas if adobe can do this ... ??

Acrobat has a page size limit of 200 inches. If you can tweak the resolution that may be Ok, but there are undocumented pixel limits too.

  • Question about making pdfs from Illustrator files

Hi, can someone tell me how to solve the following problem? I am preparing pdfs that will be loaded onto a website. At the moment, I make pdfs of each Illustrator file (corresponding to each page of the document). Our current IT guy then processes the pdfs so that when someone accesses them on the website, they can simply scroll down from one page to the next. We are changing our IT set up, however, and our new IT guy suggests that it would speed things up if we could prepare a single pdf file that contains all the pdfs relating to a single document. Does anyone know if there is the facility to do this within Illustrator? (We seem to remember it could be done in the old Freehand software.) Many thanks

Since artboards were introduced in CS4 you can create multipage pdfs directly from Illustrator.
Tiling pages in Illustrator makes a single page pdf of all your pages, so stay away from that.
Otherwise you would go into acrobat and stitch them together in either a pdf or pdf portfolfio file.

  • Making PDFs from JPEGs?

Hello. I am hoping that this is the right part of the forum for this query.
I am interested in creating multi-page PDF documents from individual JPEGs (i.e. pages of text that I have scanned). I have PhotoShop Elements as well as Adobe Reader 7.1.0. I am on a Macintosh (OS 10.4.11). Is there anyway I can do this with what I already have or with an additional free download, or do I need to pay for a new application or service?
Hope someone can answer. Thanks in advance.
    CR

Which version of Photoshop Elements? My PSE6 will save as PDF, and
    earlier versions probably could, too.
You can join PDFs up to 10MB each together online at
http://www.pdfjoin.com. Or you could download and install a free PDF
creator like primoPDF ( http://www.primopdf.com ) which will allow
you to produce PDFs in series to give a multipage PDF.
JPEG may not be the best choice if you're scanning text. If you open
one of your JPGs in PSE and zoom in close, you'll see the fuzziness
at the edges of the characters. It's much better to scan to TIFF,
which will give crisp, clean text if the page you're scanning is
clean. The files will be bigger, but the result will be much better.

  • Having trouble printing pdf from Safari

I'm new to Mac, so I'm hoping there is just some secret place I don't know about to adjust these settings.
Here's the issue: I am trying to print a pdf certificate (full page with a thin border on it) from Safari. When printed, the page is offset to the right and down, like there is some sort of default page margins set up in the browser.
What I've tried: There is no "page setup" option in the "file" menu. In the print menus (the ones that appear when you click the arrow next to the printer dialogue box), I have tried selecting a borderless paper, printing borderless pages (with the sliding bar at both ends of the spectrum), changing the orientation, changing the zoom, and creating a custom paper with custom margins.
No matter what I do, the page still prints out with a sizable margin on the top and left, the certificate border is right at the edge of the page on the right, and off the page on the bottom. This also happens when I print the page from Safari to a pdf, so it's not the printer.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
Don't rely on an HP updater to work. They don't quite understand a Mac mentality.
You can find the latest HP driver for your printer here.
Yes, a faulty printer driver will affect Safari's printing.
After you install the driver, "repair permissions" using Disk Utility found in your Finder's Applications>Utilities folder.

  • PDF from Photoshop is tiny

This is a new bahavior that corresponds somehow to my upgrade to Acrobat X, Photoshop CS5.5 and Windows 7.
When I print PDFs from Photoshop, the end result is an image 6% its assigned size. For instance, a 1500 pixel square at 300 dpi will be printed as a 90-pixel square when using Press as my preset. This happens in all Acrobat settings such as Standard, Press and HQP. The behavior does not happen when making PDFs from otehr applications.
I know there are several workarounds for making a PDF from Acrobat (and perhaps good reasons to make PDFs from other applications), but it is sometimes best that I share an image as a PDF, and I expect this process to work as it has thhrough all the previous versions of Acrobat and Photoshop.
    Thanks for any help.
