Trouble migrating data

I just got a new Macbook Air with a 256gb solid state drive, and I want to migrate my data from Time Machine.  There is 146gb worth of data to migrate, yet the Migration Assistant is telling me that I only have 96mb of free space?  Any clues as to why this is?

It sounds like you didn't use Setup Assistant when your new Mac first started up, but skipped that, created a user account, then used the Migration Assistant app later on.
If so, did you put any other data on it?
Did you have a problem with Migration Assistant, and start over?  If so, that may have left some partially-transferred user account(s) and data on the new Mac.  You'll need to delete that first, via System Preferences > Users &Groups.

  • Trouble migrating data to new macbook

I'm on a G5 dual-processor running 10.4.6. I've gone through the migration assistant and after restarting the G5 holding down the "T" key, I get the correct symbol, but no data is trasferred. Assuming that my firmware might need updating, I went to the page for firmware updates, but the links to those updates seem to take me to a page no longer in existence. Do I need an update and, if so, where do I get one???
    thanks

This page lists appropriate firmware updates: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117. There's no indication of what you're trying to mount in target disk mode; another computer? More details on what you're actually doing, etc. would be helpful.

  • Clean install OSX+S 10.9 then migrate data from 10.6 Server?

    Howdy All,
I've had OSX Server from the first release but stopped at Snow Leopard Server waiting for the "new server" to mature a bit.  I think it is time now to move to OSX Server 10.9 but also for a clean install to clear out the crud that has collected over all these years.
I have two main partitions: one for the OS with the Mail store and Wikis and another for user home directories and other files.  Again this is going from Snow Leopard Server 10.6.last to 10.9 Mavericks and then Mavericks Server
My question is:  If I clean install Maverick and then Mavericks server on another partition will I be able to migrate data and services over manually?
Of course, I will need to setup users and directory services again from scratch (but that is part of the plan to clean out the unused stuff that has collected over the years).  I don't mind setting up fileshares, Web sites, DNS, and similar again.
However, when this is done will I be able to copy the mail store (i.e. all users email) over and will it be detected, updated if needed, and work?  Similarly, when I copy over the wikis, will they be detected, updated if needed, and work?
Further, when I setup the symbolic links for home directories again (onto the other partition), will the home directories be updated (if needed) and work?  I'm not sure what could have changed with regards to home directories but you never know.
In summary, I guess my question is about what migration only happens when you update as opposed to what happens when an older version of a resource or service is detected after an update.  Hopefully there is more of the latter than the former.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

Out of your services (AFP/SMB, Mail, OD, SWU, and web), the one with the most potential for disaster and headache is clearly mail.  If you are using the same host device, cutting services over in pieces will not be possible.  However, here are some suggestions and potential points of concern.
AFP/SMB file services are cake.  The only thing you need to consider is the potential time to copy the data if you are moving it to new disks.  The other issue will be user's GUID values and the associated ACLs.  Let's take the following scenario based on what you've detailed.
    • You have data on /HDD/Shares/ and you are planning on moving them to the SSD.  Is the SSD drive large enough to accept this data?
    • If you had a share /HDD/Shares/Data and this contained an ACL allowing the design group to have access, the design group from the 10.6.8 OD may have a different GUID than the one you create on the 10.9.1 system.  If this is the case, you can purge all ACLs with a sudo chmod -R -N /path/to/data.  (Server.app should remove and then add but older versions resulted in merged messes so I go nuclear on the old settings)  Then you can apply your new ACLs and allow the permissions to propagate.
    • If you are leaving the data were it is, you will simply need to reset permissions.  However, note that if you are exporting and then importing users (via an OD backup or via standard record format) then you are maintaining GUID and should not need to touch any permissions.
Regarding SWU, I would suggest looking into Caching server.  If you are moving the entire environment to 10.9 and iOS 7, SWU is no longer needed.  Caching server is easy as pie, requires no client configuration, and is more economical on your internet connection and server storage requirements.
Web is pretty easy also.  But, this is dependant on what you are doing with web.  If html/php/perl then you pretty much just move your site folders and you are up and running.  If you were using MySQL, note that Apple replaced it with Postgres.  You can either perform a conversion from MySQL to Postgres or you can just install MySQL again manually.  The choice is yours.  If you are not doing database backed sites, the migration should be cake.
OD is one of those technologies that I always prefer to start clean.  In really large environments, this can be very tough due to passwords.  You can export an OD backup from 10.6 and attempt a restore in 10.9.1.  If you have a lot of MCX in 10.6.8, you may run into some trouble as Apple has deprecated MCX in 10.8 and above.  However, this ensures that you have everything, from password to GUID.  Test, test, and test some more if you go this route.  An alternate option, especially if you are embracing the move away from MCX and to Profiles, is to do a user and group export for 10.6's Workgroup Manager.  This will not provide passwords but it will provide editable text files of your account data.  You can strip out the MXC and other legacy values and then use the resulting file to import users into a clean 10.9.1 OD master.  Once again, you will not get passwords unless you add them to the import file.  You need to figure out how many accounts and how sensitive users are to password resets.
The final piece is mail.  This is the one area I have very little experience.  I've been burned by Apple's mails solutions from way back in the AppleShare IP days and now make it policy to use anything else but Apple's mail solution.  In a perfect world, moving the mail data store to the new OS and triggering Server.app should be enough.  But Apple + mail never seem to enter the realm of a perfect world.
And finally, make sure DNS is correct before you do anything.  Since you are dealing with mail, you should also shut firewall port forwards to prevent new mail from coming into the server while you work on the migration.  Nothing worse than stitching mail together after a blown migration attempt.

  • Migrating data to a "new" setup, questions

    Hi fellow Archers,
    This is my current setup:

I now have a new mainboard and a SATA controller card (PCI-E 1x) coming, with two new 2TB drives. Also a cheap small SSD on the way for the OS.
What I want to do: Migrate all data to a new RAID5 array consisting of 4x 2TB drives.
Is this possible without losing any data?
    Thanks!

    Shameless self-reply-bump;
I now have the new parts except the controller. When I get that I'm going to set up the new system, trying to migrate away all data off one 2TB drive so I can pull it out of the lvm volume group.
Then I can create a new RAID5 array with 2 new and 1 old 2TB drives and start moving the data to that one. When that's done, I'll move the other 2TB drive that was in the volume group, to the RAID5 array. That way I should end up with 4 2TB HDDs in RAID5.
I need to do some research first on what stripe size to use, filesystem, etc, as well as if it's best to have the HDDs on the controller (PCI-E 1x) or on the onboard SATA controller (which should be faster since it's not bottlenecked by the PCI-E 1x bus).
    Thanks
Edit: New system installed, data migration ongoing. Managed to borrow a 2TB drive off a friend, migrated data to that so I could take one old 2TB out of the lvm, thus giving me 3 unused 2TB HDDs, on which I created a RAID5 array. Currently migrating data to it while it's initializing the parity etc...

sata_mv: For data safety, do not use sectors 8-9 on "Legacy" drives, and avoid the final two gigabytes on all RocketRAID BIOS initialized drives.
That was the culprit! I shrunk the device usage per partition like so:
    Avail Dev Size : 3907025072 (1863.01 GiB 2000.40 GB)
    Array Size : 11702108160 (5580.00 GiB 5991.48 GB)
    Used Dev Size : 3900702720 (1860.00 GiB 1997.16 GB)
So it's using 1860 out of 1863 or so GB per partition, that way I should be safe corruption wise. It would be best to shrink the actual partitions (sd[b,c,d,g]1), but I don't know how to do that without messing everything up.

  • How to only migrate data from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 11?

According to our requirement, We need to only migrate data from a SQL Server database to an existed
    Oracle database user.
    1) I tried to do it with SQL Developer 3.0.04 Migration Wizard, But find an issue.
    My SQL Server database name is SCDS41P2, and my Oracle database user name is CDS41P2;
When I used SQL Developer to do offline move data by Migration Wizard, I found all oracle user
name in movedata files which gotten by run Migration Wizard
is dbo_SCDS41P2. If the Oracle user name is not the same as my existed Oracle user name,
the data can't be moved to my existed Oracle user when I run oracle_ctl.bat in command line window.
So I had to modify the Oracle user name in all movedata files, but it's difficult to modify them because there are many tables in
databases. So could you please tell me how to get the movedata files which the oracle user name in them is my
    expected Oracle user name?
    2) I also tried to use the 'copy to Oracle' function to copy the SQL Server database tables data
to the existed Oracle database user. When clicked 'copy to Oracle', I selected 'Include Data' and 'Replace' option
But I found some tables can't be copied, the error info is as below:
Table SPSSCMOR_CONTROLTABLE Failed. Message: ORA-00955: name is already used by an existing object
Could you please tell me how to deal with this kind of error?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for you replying. But the 'copy to oracle' function still can't be work well. I will give some info about the table. I also search 'SPSSCMOR_CONTROLTABLE' in the target schema, and only find one object. So why say 'name is already used by an existing object'? Could you please give me some advice? Thanks!

How can I migrate data from an old MBA to a new one without having access to the screen of the old one? The screen of the old MBA is damaged !

If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.

  • Migrate data from one table to another

    Hi,
I need to move data from work space -1 to work space -2. I need to move only selected data. From work space -1 to work space -2
    Work space -1
    Table -1_
    ID NAME Description
    1 xyz one
    2 abc two

Table -1 is parent table and Table-2 is child. Here PID is parent key of table-1 and ID's in both the table are primary keys.
Now i need to move data from work space-1 to work space -2
    Work Space -2 table structure

  • How do I view Migrate Data errors - Access 2003 - Oracle 10g

I'm trying to use the SQL Developer to migrate data from an Access 2003 database to an Oracle 10g database. I followed the instructions found here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/files/omwb_getstarted.html
I was able to complete every step except the actual data move. I exported the xml for the Access database, I captured the export and then ran the generation scripts on my target Oracle database (I'm using the same schema for the migration repository and the actual data). It created the tables with only one or two errors which I resolved.
Now, when I select Migration->Migrate Data, I get the dialog that appears to start 4 or 5 threads and attempts to migrate each table. They all error and do not transfer any rows. I can see that there's one error per table, but I can't see the error text. I just know that an error occurred. Is there a log somewhere or is the error displayed somewhere else? How do I know what's gone wrong?
    Thanks.

I too receive unexplained error counts using the Migrate Data menu selection and unexplained failures using the Generate Data Move Scripts menu selection. Permissions granted by role or direct grants should not be a problem, but a Migrate Data error appears in the Migration Log panel at the bottom of the SQL Developer window, "Failed to disable constraints: ORA-00942 ... ". No further details available on what constraints or why the error. No other errors were detected while following the instructions found in the Oracle SQL Developer Migration Workbench Getting Started guide. SQL Developer never migrates the data from the existing Access 2000 mdb file to the newly created schema objects in Oracle 10g using either method. Operating system for both Access 2000 and Oracle 10g is Windows XP PRO SP2.
Oracle SQL Developer is version 1.1.2.25 build MAIN-25.79 on Windows XP PRO SP2. All three are on the same PC.
Since only the last step failed, I created a User DSN with the ODBC administrator. Then, linked the newly created Oracle table to Access via ODBC using the DSN created. Next, I created an append query with the source being the Access table and the target being the Oracle table. I moved the data by pressing the red exclamation mark.

  • HT201250 i bought a new mac, and i want to migrate data from my old pc external drive to my mac how is this done

Just Recently bought a new Mac, because my old PC crashed again, ( finished w/ microsoft) but now i would like to migrate data from my external drive i used on my PC to my new Mac. i loaded the Migration assitant from utilities but didnt see how to migrate the data from this external drive. which is a SEgate drive. any ideas.

Just in case you are not aware of this, you can probably use your external drive, which you presumably now no longer need for your PC, as the backup drive using the Mac's Time Machine. If you still have any Windows specific files that you want to keep, it is really easy to partition the drive so that you can keep Windows files and Mac files in different partitions.

  • Just reinstalled software and migrated data from Time Machine, now iMac does not recognize printer or camera

Under the direction of Apple Support, I recently erased my iMac (Intel) hard drive, reinstalled and updated software and migrated data from an external hard drive via Time Machine.
Now, after clicking on "PRINT", the print dialog box says "printing" then says "no pages found", and finally says "stopped"; and when I plug in my camera to download photos, the camera is not recognized.  Both printer and camera are connected via USB.
I checked connections, verified printing and iPhoto preferences, turned printer off then on again, unplugged and replugged USB connections, and checked and followed directions in the Help menu.

Thanks very much, I'd just tried rkaufmann87's suggestion and entered "This solved my question" when your suggestion popped up—you deserve a "This solved my question" too, though I saw only an option for "This helped me".
Before I got rkaufmann87's suggestion, I repaired disk permissions and that resolved the camera problem.  Both of you nailed the solution.
    Thanks again!

The crash report in Mail itself displays this:
Crashed Thread:  2  -[LibraryUpgrader run]  Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-overcommit-priority
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: EXC_I386_GPFLT
There's loads more but don't want to cut&paste reams of this stuff!  Wondering if there's a simple fix to this?
Any help much appreciated - I don't want to constantly have to use my webmail.
    (Late 2008 MBP 2.4GHz Intel core 2 duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3)
    Thanks in advance...

Thanks, found Envelope Index & followed your instructions.  Mail still crashing at the same spot...
When you say 'post your results', did you mean the crash report...?

  • Migrate data from imac to macbook pro

I want to migrate data from an imac over to a macbook pro. The macbook pro already has data on it which i want to keep on it. I want to make a new user on the macbook pro called "imac" and this user will have all the imacs data stored on it. How can I transfer all this data across and how can i put it into a new user?
Both computers are running OSX Mavericks.

Thunderbolt is even better than Firewire.
Migration Assistant will not overwrite any existing data or existing user account. It will only create a new account and transfer into the new account.
If you wish to move data from your other computer into an existing user account on the target computer, then you don't want to use Migration Assistant. You would use another type of tool such as a standard backup utility or file/folder synchronization tool. I would suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner. Bear in mind that for this to work correctly the usernames of both the source and target accounts should be the same lest you run into permissions problems after the transfers.
CCC will let you specify only what you want to transfer or let you clone an entire volume.

  • How do I migrate data from my 2003 iMac to my mid-2011 iMac?

    Hi All,
I have a 2003 iMac and I want to migrate the iTunes, iPhoto, etc DBs to my new mid-2011 iMac.  The 2003 iMac is the last one before they switched to the intel chip.  It's Mac OS is version 10.5.4.  That's as late as I can get it as they quit supporting the old chip after that.
I found a vid on mac-to-mac file migration online.  It said to connect the two computers via firewire cable (done), start the new computer (done), start the old computer while holding down the T-key (done), and the old computer's hard drive will show up on the new computer finder window (did happen).  Then it says to start Migration Assistant on the new computer (done), and follow directions.  That's where I run into a problem.  The Migration Assistant says "Looking for other computers" and it never finds the old iMac even though the old iMac's hard drive is visible in the new iMac's finder window.  Note that I can click down through directories on the old iMac in the new iMac's finder window.
Any suggestions you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much!

Your old machine may too old for Migration Assistant to work. In that case your best bet is to set up the old machine in Target Disk Mode and then drag and drop your files to the new machine. You should only migrate data files, if you have applications on the old machine these should be manually installed on the new machine. If any of the old machine's apps are PPC (Power PC) based these will not run in Lion and will need to be upgraded or replaced prior to installing on the new machine. You can check what apps are PPC based by opening System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler), click Applications on the left and then look in the Kind column. Applications that will run in Lion OK are Intel & Universal apps.

Put the G4 into Target Disk Mode and open Migration Assistant on the new MBP. Your G4 needs to be running 10.5.8.
