Trouble Migrating from iMac G4 to new MacBook

I recently purchased a new 13" 2.4 GHz MacBook, as well as a Firewire cable (a 6pin/6pin, but not from Apple), with the intention of transferring my data and some apps from my 5 year old iMac G4. I turned on the new MacBook and followed its instructions to migrate. I connected the Firewire cable, and restarted the old Mac while holding T, so the Firewire symbol appeared on the screen. However, then the migration assistant said I didn't have Mac OS X on the old computer, which is simply not true. Is the problem related to the fact that the new one is Intel-based and the old one is not, or that the old one has a different version (I think) of OS X?

Do not use Migration Assistant to migrate from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac. See the following:
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Move iphoto library with albums from imac to a new macbook proac

I have an approximately 7,000 photo iPhoto library that I want to move from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro. I want to do it completely to that albums I have already structured are retained. Can I do this and if so, what is the best way.
The older computer has iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2. The newer one has iPhoto '11 version 9.1.1

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Migrating from iMac G5 (Tiger) to Macbook Pro (Leopard) over a network

I just got my new Macbook (running Leopard) and trying to migrate all my files/settings from my iMac over (running Tiger). The instructions tell me to use Migration Assistant.
On new Mac, I open Migration Assistant and select migrate "From other Mac". I am doing this over network so a 6 digit code was provided. It then instructs me to power on my old Mac, ensure latest OS X software is updated (10.4.11), open Migration Assistant and select migrate "To another Mac".
Here's where I am stuck. On my old Mac, there is no "To another Mac" option to select.. thus I am not given a chance to input the 6 digit code to connect the 2 computers.
Is the problem to do with my old Mac being an older version, thus it's Migration Assistant application is also older and does not support a migrate "to another mac" option?

Migration Assistant does not work well for migrating from a Power PC machine to an Intel Machine. Try this instead:

  • Can't get my old mails after Migration from iMac G4 to new iMac

    Hi,
I bought this weekend my new iMac and transferred all data of the old iMac to my new one. Everything works fine except Mail: it is not possible to connect the Mailserver, the local stored e-mails are not visible. Mail knows the name of my mailfolders and complete setting (these settings work at the old iMac) but the folders are empty and it is not possible to quit Mail (only cmdaltesc works).
Does anybody knows this problem (or the solution)?
    Thanks for response
    Lubitsch

Assuming that both are running the same version of OS X, what you could do is copy the entire contents of the folder <home>/Library/Mail across from your old iMac to your new iMac and also copy the file com.apple.Mail.plist from the folder <home>/Library/Preferences on your old iMac to the same folder on your new iMac.
When you then start Mail it should operate as expected.

  • Migrating from ibook tiger to new macbook leopard

I have just bght a new macbook running leopard.. I only really have mail/photos/email/music on my old ibook running tiger. I started up the new macbook (160g HD) conected ethernet to old ibook. Using migration assistant it was all going well untill new macbook kept saying "connection lost, check connection" etc. I turned off and on, and "resumed migration", when i returned i had an error msg on old ibook saying "migration problems, may not have been comleted".. Anyway, I only have an old 60g ibook, but when i resytart my macbook it gives me all the welcome movie, asks where i am etc, then it gets to the point in migration assistant when it shows my old computers "Files", "network settings", and "applications" it shows 10kb next to network settings, but next to the other two it says "calculating" and then after about 5mins the screen goes grey and i get the spinning wheel that never stops. The old ibook say "new computer is ready" with the moving line bar.. also the "space available" on new macbook is down to 89.9gig, even though i only have about 30gig of files etc to be brought across.. I tried this over wireless network as well but same thing happened.
1)should i reinstall everything on new macbook and start again
2)have i installed everything twice without knowing it (i have tried the process a few times by turing new macbook on and off
    3)seek professional help

If I do that will my library be accessable on the macbook without the external hard drive?

  • Getting an error 150:30 message on CS4 after migration from time capsule to new MacBook Pro

Getting a constant error message... deleted the files stated in the forum and tried to run the LicenceRepair but nothing is happening... ran the .py file in teminal but still getting the error message... My MacBook is running OSX 10.9.3

Sorry, but Apple's Migration feature doesn't work with Adobe applications.
    1. Use the Cleaner tool to remove what you copied onto your computer:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    2. Install CS4 from your original install discs, or from your back of the CS4 install files.

How can I transfer two user names from an iMac to a new macbook?
got a new laptop and need to transfer two usernames to it, complete with all documents help?

Assuming you haven't already set up a user, the easiest way is to use the Setup Assistant during first boot of the new Mac, with the two Macs connected by firewire.
You'll be prompted to migrate from a choice of sources - choose "from another Mac", select the catagories of data you want to transfer and follow the instructions.

  • What is the fastest way to transfer files and applications from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro?

What is the fastest way to transfer files and applications from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro?
I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop.

The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...
Notice this support doc hasn't been updated since june 2012, no Thunderbolt info

  • I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.

I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro.  We have the two computers set up through Time Machine.  I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited.  When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this).  When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library.  Don't know if that is a problem or not.  Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?!  Both computers are running Lion.  This permission thing is making me crazy.  What am I missing?  We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!

Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

HOW DO I TRANSFER DATA FROM MY IMAC TO MY NEW MACBOOK PRO? I tried it with an ethernet cable and it seems to go OK till it gets to applications. From there the time it takes to complete seems to increase rather than decrease!

That's the easiest way, this side of using Time Machine. The time it takes to transfer files between our computers ka vary but while doing it on my MBP I had to leave it plugged in for near 24 hours and it was supposed to take 3.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
