Trouble migrating to new iMac.

Trouble migrating to new iMac. Seems stuck in preparing information for over an hour. When I click the back button on new Mac it says authenticating  what should I do?

Whew, I think you'll have to start over, & use Disk Utility to Verify or Repair both Hard Drives before trying again.

Im trying to migrate to new iMac from old iMac and am getting 'incompatible software' message. I'm not sure what to do- can I revert back to snow leopard from mavericks?

    Hi Mark,
If you install Mavericks, or in your case migrate from an old computer running Snow Leopard (or an earlier version of Mac OS X) to one using Mavericks, some of your software that was designed to run on older computers may not function in the new OS. See this article -
OS X: About the incompatible software folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258
    In particular -
If you see a message indicating that you can't use "this version" of an app, contact the software's vendor or visit their website to see if a later, compatible version of the app is available. If you purchased the software from the Mac App Store, use Software Update to see if an updated version is available there.
    and
During installation, OS X moves known-incompatible software to a folder named "Incompatible Software" at the top level of the startup drive. If this folder is present on your Mac, see what applications are in it, then check for available updates. To obtain a newer version of an Apple app, check the Mac App Store, or visit the Apple Store website.
Regarding installing an older operating system on your new iMac, Apple does not support doing this, as described in this article -
Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac

  • After Migration to new iMac, old Photoshop won't launch

I used the Migration Assistant in Firewire Target Disk Mode to transfer my old Apps and files and folders from my intel Macbook to my new 24" iMac. I had to do it several times since it transferred Applications okay, and all the folders, but the folders were empty on the new machine. I finally had to drag and drop the contents of most folders. Everything seems to be working okay now except for one glaring failure. My old Photoshop 7.0.1, which was working just fine in Rosetta on the Macbook, no longer works at all. It will not even launch. I get an error message that due to an "unrecoverable error" in programming, Photoshop will close now, almost as soon as it tries to start. I have a number of other Power PC applications (even Adobe ones) of similar vintage that are working just fine. I tried reinstalling the Application entirely (still have all my old Apps!), but it had no effect on the failure to launch. I checked with Adobe and they declined to support such an old version. Any ideas on what could be causing this that I might check? Having blown all my money on the new iMac I really cannot afford to purchase a new Photoshop right now.

Photoshop 7 is not compatible with Mac OS 10.5 and Adobe offers no fix. You'll need to upgrade.

  • After migration to new iMac - problems with Microsoft office 2008 using multiple users

I migrated my data from my old Imac to my new Imac.  On the new Imac I created multiple logins for my kids.  My microsoft office 2008 programs will not open.  I keep getting the "Customer Experience Improvement Program" screen which cycles through, checks for update then closes never allowowing me to access the program.  Please help!!

Reference your first post - I download and use dmg files, so either I'm lucky or they are supported.
I would try the disk reinstall since at this point there doesn't seem to be many options.
Do you have a backup? You could restore the Microsoft Office 2008 folder.

  • How can you rename your iMac owner's name after migration to new iMac?

I bought a new iMac and after the migration of old files etc to new one, it retained the owner name of the old one and I can't find out how to change it.
    Thanks in advance for help.

Never mind, the solution came up after I submitted the question and all is fine.

  • IPhoto can't find server volume after migration to new iMac with 2 HDs

    Hi all,
I recently moved to a new iMac from an older Mac Pro. The new iMac has 2 hard drives (256GB SSD & 2TB HD) with all the programs installed on the SSD and the HD is used as the main file storage drive. iPhoto is installed on the SDD and its library of pictures are on the HD. My latest photo imports are working fine but the older pictures can't be properly opened, I get the following warning everytime I double click on a thumbnail:
Clicking on "Cancel" gets the following responce:
When I look at the info of the premigration thumbnails it says the pictures are located on the correct HD. The new pictures also show them as being in the same location but I'm having no problem opening the post migration pictures.
I'm thinking about trying out Aperature but want to get this linking problem sorted out first.
Any ideas how I should go about relinking "thousands" of pictures..?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Migrating to new imac 24"...BIG problem

Got my new imac 24"..connected it to old G4 733...connected them with firewire and used migration assistant.
NOW...there seems to be none of my old stuff on the new imac AND the g4 ,when started, beeped three times then power light flashes.
    AAAAGHH!!!
Is there any way of booting up the G4?
If i put in my software restore cd..would that help..and which button is it to hold down whilst starting up.
Getting really concerned that i may lose all my stuff on old G4!!!
    Thanks in advance

It does seem a million to one chance you'd have a hardware failure at the time you were migrating to a new computer. Have you tried starting the old G4 without anything attached, literally anything and then perhaps just a keyboard, mouse and monitor?
In the worst case if you do need to remove the hard drive, you just lift the ring on the right hand panel of the computer case, drop the side down, unplug the ribbon and power cable from the drive, undo a screw to remove the drive and it's carrier from the computer and then undo a further four screws to remove the drive from the carrier. Installation instructions can be found here in the ATA Hard Drive section, assuming your computer is a Quicksilver (although you'd be doing the reverse to remove the drive):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75314
FireWire or USB enclosures aren't that expensive and once you've installed the drive (according to the supplied instructions) you'd just connect it up to your new Mac via FireWire or USB.
As I say though, it's perhaps a last resort if you can't get your old G4 to start.

  • Migrating to new iMac

    Hi,
Just order a new iMac 27" i7.  The local retail Mac Store offered to migrate all of my data from my iMac 2006 running Lion for $100.  Should I have the Mac Store do it or try myself?
    Thank you
    vph

You can do it easily if you have a Firewire cable.
On first boot have the old one in Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
This will make your old Mac look like a FW drive to the new one, boot the new one up, after putting a little info in it'll ask if you want to Migrate, I choose everything.

  • Old iMac won't migrate to new iMac

Have a iMac running Mavericks and i have tried to use migration to transfer files to new iMac running Yosemite the New iMac sees the old iMac and assigns a code number but the old iMac can't find the new iMac. What could be causing this.

Thanks for the advise, but I choose to install from my Time Machine Backup. The only difference is now I have two logins, the transferred original one from Mavericks and the new one using Yosemite's setup. I really don't consider this a problem and I'm just happy that I have an excellent fast running operating system. Man is that Intel 3.5 quad core i5 processor fast and it has a turbo boost to 3.9 GHz.

  • InDesign CS4 crashing upon startup after migration to new iMac

    Hi,
I recently used Migration Assistant to move the contents of my old iMac that was running OS X 10.5.8 to my new iMac that is currently running OS X 10.7.3.  Unfortunately, everytime I attempt to start up InDesign CS4, it crashes without giving me an error message. I previously could not start up Illustrator CS4 on this new iMac and I received this error message:
    "Fatal error - missing component /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client 4.0.0/VersionCue.framework"
and I was able to transfer the folder Client 4.0.0 to my new iMac and get Illustrator CS4 up and running.
What can I do to get InDesign running on my new iMac?

Because you moved many of the CS4 files onto your computer, you need to remove them before doing a new install.
There is an Adobe Cleaner tool which can remove components of the incomplete installation. Here is a link to it:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
You won't be able to download CS4 from Adobe. They only have downloads of the current version. You didn't back up your original download?

  • ITune songs not found after migrating to new iMac

My old iMac's graphics card broke. Luckily I have used Time Machine to back up to ann external HDD.
I used Migration Assistant to bring up the new iMac. However, I cannot find any songs in iTune. The songs can still be found in my iPhone though.
I also found that Time Machine has set up a new folder in the external HDD, so while the old backup files are still there, I cannot access it when I tried to restore it.
    Need help.
Since this is a new, clean installation, I don't mind reinstalling the OS X, which I have done, if it helps.

    There is no Music folder.
Perhaps I should try to start from a clean slate again. Do you think it will make sense to wipe out all the data and re-install OSX, re-migrate? There will not be any lost data (compared to what I have now..)
When I re-installed OSX, I had to state a name. I chose the name on the previous computer, which led to a conflict when I tried to migrate. I had to choose another name for the new iMac. Could this have led to the inability to restore properly? (am I making sense?)

  • Licensing problem after migrating to new iMac

    Hi,
I just recently got my new iMac and used restore/migration from a time-machinde backup of my previous Mac.
Now Logic asks me for my serial number and won't accept the one that is in my registration/serial/licensing information (and that worked before on my old Mac)
And I can't find any way to contact apple about this..
    any ideas?

    interesting
I have only seen migration assistant fail with Pro Apps
simple apps that don't install are fine but complex apps install stuff in libraries where migration assistant doesn't always look
it might work ok in the short term but doesn't always in the long term
but hey if you wanna risk it go for it

  • Migrate to new iMac after booting new iMac

A friend and I just bought new iMacs. I migrated from my old mac upon booting through the normal process. He booted his computer and "looked at it", thereby creating a user. Now he needs to migrate his old computer. Most of the directions I find explain the basic migration process used when you boot into a new computer. Since he already has started using his new iMac I'm checking for the best process for migration at this point. My thoughts are...
       1.    Start up from the recovery partition and tell it to Reinstall a new copy.  That should put the computer back into a totally clean mode that he can then use to do a firewire transfer of his old user and data and he should end up with a single user.
       2. Use Migration assistant and pull over his old user, then assign that user as admin and wipe out (or leave) the user created on his iMac. I'm not sure if using the migration assistant AFTER the computer has been started causes any problems with user ID or creates other issues. I don't know if it pulls over all the Library parts that are not part of the User folder....
I'd appreciate your comments on how to best pull over all his files, startup programs and such now that he already has a user on his new imac and whether it's to any advantage to wipe his new iMac and start from scratch.  Thanks.

I strongly recommend that he start over, restoring the machine to factory specs, and then migrating on first boot. Details in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Migration to new IMAC from old IMAC with a Backup Drive

I purchased an new IMAC and have an old IMAC and have migrated all of my stuff from old to new, except I have a external backup drive on the old IMAC and did not migrate it. I thought that I would migrate by attaching it to the new but do not have the right cables. Can I connect the backup drive to the old with the firewire that I have and connect the old IMAC to the new one with the cables that I used, or do I have to buy the right connector to connect the backup to the new IMAC.
    Thanks

  • Help! App reg/licenses missing after migrating to new iMac.

I just finished migrating to a new iMac (2007 2.16 GHz White Lucite -> 2008 2.83 GHz Aluminum). I used the Migration Assistant after starting up the new iMac to transfer everything. I chose "Transfer from another Mac" (which was actually my SuperDuper! backup on an external FW RAID). Everything seemed fine (I even rebooted first). I logged into my Admin account first and it looked the same. But after logging into my User account and trying to open my apps they were starting as though it was their first time, asking for SN and registration info. Safari has reverted from v4 to v3, Aperture wants SN, and iTunes can't open my library because it was created with a newer version, yet Mail worked fine. What happened? And more importantly, what should I do? I don't want to re-enter SN's and info and re-register my apps.
I have both SuperDuper! and Time Machine backups. I was thinking to boot from SuperDuper! as Start Up Disk and then do a complete restore, or if necessary erase the Mac HD first (which I'd prefer not to). Will restoring the new iMac HD with the SD! backup from the older iMac cause any issues?
    Addendum:
I just noticed in the System Profiler that OS X is 10.5.4, not 10.5.6. Why didn't it transfer/update the OS as well? Isn't it suppose to transfer everything? Why would I want to downgrade my OS X with a new iMac?

I ended up using OS X disc to 'Restore System From Backup' from Time Machine backup. That returned the system back to almost an exact state as before, but a few apps were still asking for SN, and Mail wouldn't open because it had to reload messages. Strangely though, Aperture won't accept the SN now, whereas it did after the first migration transfer.
Migrating to a new Mac is not as simple and painless as made out to be. At least not clearly enough. It was an all-dayer/nighter full of stress and frustration. Not something I expect from Mac, but a PC.
Another after-effect from this is Time Machine doesn't see its backup now, even though it's there on the external drive. It showed backup failed and then after I reset/highlighted the correct drive it started backing up under a new folder/computer name. I deleted that but can't figure out how to make TM see the existing BU. This has been a lot of fun.
