Trouble moving files from desktop to external harddrive

Hi there-I'd love some advice
I have all of my FCP express files on my desktop-the render/capture, etc. I'm trying to copy them to my Lacie external harddive. I keep getting error messages such as "cannot copy, error code 36" and various other things. Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing or what the problem is. I made a mistake and now have tons of gigs of files on my desktop and have to get them off. Help-Please!

Right click on the drive icon on your desktop and do 'get info'
Check out the format. If it is ms-dos, it needs to be reformatted. Please be aware that reformatting drives erases all material. Back up things you can not afford to loose.

Needs clarification. You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer. So which are you trying to do? Either way, sounds like a browser issue. You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

First format the external as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Connect via Firewire.
If it is just a few files or folders you want to back up you can just drag and drop. Or you can use SyncTwoFolders to keep the backups up to date.
If you want to back up your entire start-up disk use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner, both of which can make a bootable clone of your entire start-up drive.

Moving files from desktop to hard drive?

Just installed Mavericks. When I try to move a file from the desktop to the hard drive I am told that the move requires an administrator name and password. "To move file click Authenticate" How can I stop that?

The root of the HD is also owned by the system. If you really want to put files there make a folder as an admin user & then change the ownership & group permissions so the other users can access it.
The /Users/Shared folder is really where stuff that is accessible to everyone belongs. Keeping your files within your home also helps with any backups or migrations in the future.

Lost id3 tags moving files from mac to external drive

No matter what audio file I move from my desktop to any of my 20 external hhds in finder not itunes the meta data gets lost in the transfer.
My music hard drive died and I'm having to copy all my CDs to a new drive, I like to have all my tags set and ready for when I import songs into iTunes

Drag and drop should work with the movie files. Use these instructions for iPhoto library:

Consider making a new library with the events you want or move the library and then edit it leaving the events you want to remain.

Having trouble moving files from iWeb to iTunes

Trouble moving files from 10.9 to 10.4

I have many '.mov' files for a movie I am editing. The file has 2 codecs on it, AAC, and H.264. it is 1920x1080, 24p footage. When I open in on my OSx10.9 Mac, it plays fine in quicktime. When I plug my hard drive into my 10.4 mac, the file opens, however it has this green flash layered over my footage. It is not sequential, it just randomly flashes green. I would like to know why this is happening, and How I can fix this problem. Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

I think you may have to resign yourself to that. 10.4 Tiger? It is ancient (nearly 10 years old) software, probably the version of Quicktime Player (6?) can't play these movies properly. You could try running an older version of VLC on it and see if you get better results.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

Cannot delete .band files from desktop

I was working on a file in GarageBand, I saved the .band file on my desktop, but after I quit GarageBand without saving the work, the .band file went a little weird. I tried dragging it to the trash and cmd-delete it but the message came up saying "The item “Recording Final.band” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted." Later I launched GarageBand again, and when I tried to drag the weird .band file from desktop to the GarageBand icon on my dock, the dock appears to crash, my wallpaper went gray for a second and then the dock came back up. Also when I select the file and hit space bar to do a quick look it shows up saying No Items Selected. I like to keep my desktop tidy don't want these files here blocking the way. Anyone knows the solution to the problem?

The first thing I'd do is just restart your system. You might find the file has disappeared. If not, try deleting it again. If you get the same error msg, do as follows.
Enable 'show path bar' in Finder > View. Highlight the problem file and make a note of the path.
Open Terminal and use the
rm <path to file>
command to remove it (remove the angled brackets). If you want to be on the safe side, use the command
cd <parent directory of file>
to move into the correct folder first.
Example
Suppose the path is:
Lion > Music > Garageband > problemfile.band
In Terminal, you'd type
cd ~/Music/Garageband
Then type
ls -l
Assuming you see 'problemfile.band' in the list, type
rm problemfile.band
If you get an error, try
sudo rm problemfile.band
and enter your admin password (which will be invisible when you type it).
If you still get an error msg, post back here, stating the error msg.

Cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista

Hi All,
I cannot Delete CPTL file from Desktop using Vista. Explorer
crashes. It is a Captivate 2 file.
I have tried (with no luck):
- logging in as a different user and deleting the file.
- running explorer as an Administrator
- uninstalling Captivate.
Anyone got any ideas?

That is a strange issue. Here are a couple more ideas you
could try:
- Have you tried renaming the file (including suffix)?
- Have you rebooted?
- Do you get any error messages when trying to delete, such
as "Acess Denied"?
- Is your machine networked? Is it possible someone else has
the file open?
- Can the file be moved to another location or put in a
folder (and then deleted)?
- Have you tried using the Command Prompt / DOS mode to
delete the file?
It sounds like it could be a Vista issue so I would look at
the Microsoft Vista forums too. Sorry I do not have an exact
answer.

Moving files from PowerMac G3 to MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and am moving files from all my old macs onto it. I found an old beige desktop PowerPC hard drive but don't have a monitor for it. Also, I have ancient 3.5 floppies that I need to read and the old beige computer has a slot for that. So, the question is: How do I get my files off the beige G3 and onto the new computer when the beige PowerPC has NO firewire?

One solution is to find any old crappy monitor and hook it up to the beige G3. Then you can configure it to use Ethernet, and set up a small Ethernet network with your new MacBook Pro. It is a little complicated, but not difficult.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.
