Trouble moving files in lightroom 2.5

I can't seem to resolve a problem with moving files in Lightroom 2.5. While in the program, can not drag and drop images from one folder to another. If drag and drop from IE (Windows Vista), and then go back into Lightroom 2.5, catalog does not update or recognize the move was done. I have to resync the folders every time.
Based on tutorial videos that I've watched, it should be capable of these very basic things. I'm still new to LR and learning but can't seem to get past this. Is this a bug or setup issue? Not sure what I'm missing but it's driving me nuts, would appreciate any help.
Sincerely,
Bob

When you want to move a photo to another folder in LR, you have to drag the thumbnail, not the rectangle around the thumbnail.
Lightroom does not find the new location of photos moved in Windows. Simply not a feature of the program. Therefore, you are best off to do the move in LR.

I don't know what tutorials you are watching, but as I said, locating files that have been moved in Windows is not a feature/capability of Lightroom. You have to point Lightroom to the new location of the photo, or better yet, move the photo in LR. Or, even better, don't move photos from one folder to another, instead browse your photos in Lightroom, using keywords, metadata and collections (instead of folders) as your method of organization.

    I am having trouble moving files from iphoto to a thumb drive.  During the same session sometime I can move 10 photos at a time, the next time I can only move one photo and sometime no photos will move.  I also have trouble downloading photos to the internet.  I was using a MacBook Pro and had no problems like this.  I then upgraded to the MacBook Pro with Retina Vision and this is the computer I am having problems with.  Can anyone please give me a suggestion in how to fix this problem. THANK YOU.

    iPhoto problems should be posted in their forums.

    Needs clarification.  You upload from your computer to the internet & download from a website/internet to your computer.  So which are you trying to do?  Either way, sounds like a browser issue.  You need to post in the forum of whichever browser you are using.

  • Another person asking about moving files in lightroom

    I have spent several hours today trying to sort out, what I thought was going to be an easy question.
    Moving files from my internal hdd to an external one.
    Ok, I know it should be easy, a trillion posts say how to do this.
    Sys info (from LR itself):
    Lightroom version: 3.3 [711369]
    Operating system: Windows Vista Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
    Version: 6.0 [6002]
    Application architecture: x86
    System architecture: x86
    Physical processor count: 2
    Processor speed: 1.7 GHz
    Built-in memory: 3061.6 MB
    Real memory available to Lightroom: 716.8 MB
    Real memory used by Lightroom: 343.8 MB (47.9%)
    Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 318.7 MB
    Memory cache size: 0.0 MB
    System DPI setting: 96 DPI
    Desktop composition enabled: Yes
    Displays: 1) 1280x800
    My files and their backups were scattered across 3 drives, I reformatted (a complete format - not a quick format) then proceeded to move the larger part of my library onto it using lightroom, apply some metadata and allowing lightroom to put them in date specific folders.
    Phew that was a long job.
    Now I wanted to take what was left of my library that currently resides on my C:/ drive in my laptop and move it onto the external 1tb drive.  It says they are already there.
    Searching for them outside of windows says they are not there.  Trying to use the import dialog with the move function comes up with nothing to move.
    I could drag and drop but I get a dialog box saying I can't undo anything that has been done to these files before.  I want to keep and be able to edit/undo my edits.  Isn't that what LR3 is supposed to be?
    Anyways; I'd love some help.  I have tried watching some of David Marx videos (from the lightroom lab site) and a large number of threads on this forum.  I'm stumped and I'm frustrated.
    Thanks for your time.

    Okay....
    I think I've answered my own question... sort of.
    I tried the drag and drop method of copying and that seems to work.  I don't understand the dialog box and why it makes it seem so final.
    So, I don't know why the import function didn't work, when the other night it did, but the drag and drop method worked where the import dialog failed and I'll have to change the folders and metadata manually.

  • Trouble Moving Files in Dreamweaver (CS3)

    Hi,
    Having a real problem maneuvering some files around.
    At the moment I have my index.html file which links to a folder called 2009website, which contains 4 folders each with a mini site in.
    So for instance the index file is pointing to 2009website/design/print.html
    and also
    2009website/business/clientportfolio.html
    etc, etc.
    What I want to do is take those 4 mini sites outside of the 2009website folder so that my index file points to:
    design/print.html
    and
    business/clientportfolio.html
    So I've moved the folders in my Files Panel and clicked "Update links" in the dialog box which seemed to work nicely. Only problem is all the images and css links within the HTML are still looking in the 2009website folder, i.e.
    2009website/design/css/design.css (and there's nothing in that folder anymore)
    Is there anyway I can remove the 4 folders and have the internal links update so they drop the 2009website/ and just look for the relevant folder and file?
    I know it's my own fault for putting everything inside the 2009website folder when there was no real need to.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    When you say you updated the links and everything seems to be ok - do you see any broken links within DW design view itself?
    If the files are pointing to that particular folder for the images and the css, but there is Nothing in the folders, then there is a major issue I think.
    This means that the updating of the links didn't work as you expected - if the files are not in the relevant folders, but the images and css are pointing to them,  then you should be seeing broken links...
    What you could try:
    Backup what you have now - so it doesn't get any messier  :-)    (hopefully you have a backup copy of the original before you starting moving files !)
    If you are sure that the files are all within the root of the site and not within that 2009 folder, then maybe do a find and replace and remove the beginning of the url, so that it points to where you moved the files to.  Try it on one page and see if it makes a difference.
    You could also try and move around the images folder and the css folder and see if you get a pop up with DW asking if you want to update the links and see what happens.
    Another idea  - do you have an images folder defined in the site definition?
    Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do.

  • Trouble moving photos in Lightroom

    I hope I'm positing this in the right place.  I recently imported a number of photos from a workshop I took into Lightroom 3.  They were on a jump drive that I have always used to keep my photos and move them from laptop to desktop.  Have had no trouble doing so in the past -- I have catalogues on laptop and desktop, the photos themselves on the jump drive.
    I wanted to rearrange my folders, so I tried moving them.
    I get a "can't move with an unkown error."  When I go look at them on the jump drive or on my backup drive via the Finder, they seem to all be there.  The majority are raw files and I can even open them in Photoshop from these locations.  I did convert to .dng while moving
    Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I do have them in multiple locations -- i.e. I also have the same folder in pictures.
    I have tried moving them both via the Import dialogue and then just by dragging them within the interface.
    Help!

    Lightroom will move files and folders within the catalog using Drag and Drop. If the catalog is on a fixed disk, not removable media.
    If the catalog is on a laptop and desktop and the photos on a jump drive the jump drive must be inserted at all times when the catalog is opened. Otherwise, Lightroom will be using cached preview images and cannot move them because the base photo is missing.
    The above is not a very good workflow, so I am assuming you have Lightroom copy the images to both the laptop and the desktop computers.
    The easiest way to make your changes would be to close Lightroom. Open the finder and move your folders to where you want them.
    Re-open Lightroom, Select the folder that was moved and select Update folder location.

  • Troubles opening files from Lightroom 5.3 to Photoshop sinds update.

    I did the update to Lightroom 5.3 and i use Photoshop 13.0.6.
    When i open an image from lightroom into Photoshop i always get the undeveloped image. How can i get the developped image into photoshop?

    I have the same problem.
    Further symptoms:
    - When opening the image as SmartObject in PS CC the slide for e.g. brightness can be moved. When moving the focus to an other slider, the previous changed values (brightness) is reset to 0.
    - it seems that the auto lens correction in LR5 causes the problem sometimes
    I found out a workaround which seems to work:
    - close an app:
    First I thought it was "Parallels" running. I quit Parallels and everything works fine. Next time the problem occured "Parallels" was not running. So I quit the app "Textwrangler". It solved the problem again. Yesterday I solved it quitting the MacOs-build in "Mail" app, because it was the only other app that was running.
    If someone can tell me how the files are exactly taken to Photoshop CC from Lightroom I probably can search for reasons of this behavior.
    Any ideas?
    Hope my workaround helps you too.

    Knut

  • Problem moving files in Lightroom 5 UPDATED AGAIN

    Hello,
    I recently changed from LR3 to 5.2 and have a problem I hope someone can help with.
    I have a lot of pictures taken on a trip and have created somenew  folders within the original folder to place them into categories. When I drag files from the main folder into one of the new ones Lightroom creates a new file in the new folder , but also  leaves  one in  the original one. If I then delete the file from the original folder LR deletes it from the new one as well.
    I have checked the preferences and catalog settings and read the instruction PDF but can't find anything to help.
    I should point out that the catalog was created in LR3 and imported into LR5 and has behaved fine in all other respects.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Graham
    UPDATE: I've just discovered that it is only that particular original folder that's affected. I am able to move files around into and out of other mother folders OK. Perhaps the folder I'm having thr problem with has been corrupted in some way?
    Message was edited by: Mahargo
    Further Update: If I open Adobe Bridge I can move the files around as I please, so I guess I can use this as a workaround. (Couldn't do that in Windows Explorer as you can't view DNG files there). I'd still be grateful if anyone can shed light on this. I'll investigate further tomorrow and post again if I find an answer.

    I'm also having an issue with degraded exports. Here is a screencap of the RAW file
    Here's a screen capture of the exported image after I've re-imported it into lightroom. This is a JPG with sRGB and 100% quality. It's resized on export with 3264pixel long edge at 240dpi.
    Here's a screen capture of the same JPG viewed in Windows Photo Viewer, but it looks the same in web browsers too.
    What changed? Why is there so much dark black color running into the photo? It's like a printer is printing too much black. I want to export it so that it looks the same in all other viewers as it does in photoshop.

  • Having trouble moving files to external hard drive

    I have a freeagent pc&mac ext. hd that i usually use on my pc. I have used it on my mac in the past but i tried trasnfering all of the music from my macbook to my ext. hd and i got the following error message: "The item could not be moved because FreeAgent" drive cannot be modified". Does anyone know how i can resolve this issue? Thank you.

    I'm guessing that you can only WRITE files onto your ext in windows. But you can only READ files in ext from mac.
    FAT32 would support writing files in windows and mac, but I doubt that you can format it to FAT32.
    So if you want to write files to your ext from mac, then simply reformat it using DU

  • Trouble Moving Files

    I've only been using OS X for a little over a year, some some things are still a little confusing at times. My current setup is an iMac 27" with an external HD case with four drives. One is my time machine, one is documents and the other two are for media and projects. I also have a NAS setup to backup the documents and media. Plus as an added precaution I also have a 3TB external for my most important documents that goes in a fire box. It might be overkill but. I've learned over the years that backing up is so important.
      I let time machine do its thing and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone files to the NAS. Recently I've been getting error messages that there are always a file in use. It always seems to be one video file and then an audio file or photo. I have tried closing all of my apps, but my back ups seem to always fail.
    I know there is probably a simple solution but was hoping for some help. Is there a way I can see what app is using what file so that I can close it?  Or is there another solution?  It's getting a bit frustrating so appreciate any help. Thanks guys.

    If nothing matches the parameter of the "grep" command, you won't see anything.
    When I add the file name after the sudo command does it stay in quotes, and do I leave the extension?
    That command parameter is telling the "grep" command what to look for.  You can tell it to look for more or less.  The less you tell it to look for, the greater the chance that there will be a false match from a file with a similar name.  For example, if that file had a name of "My Stuck File.xyz" you could use this command
    sudo lsof | grep Stuck
    but that might also find a file named "Another Stuck File.abc".
    If you wanted to ask grep to compare more, you could use either of these forms:
    sudo lsof | grep "Stuck File"
    or
    sudo lsof | grep Stuck\ File
    (The backslash "protects" the following space by telling the command interpreter to treat it as a part of the name instead of a parameter separater.)
    Now when I am moving stuff over it will give me a permissions error.
    If you can cite the exact message someone may be able to help you fix that.
    Maybe I am being over cautious with wanting two copies of everything
    There's nothing wrong with that.  I routinely have between two and four copies of everything, depending on the location of the file and the timing.

  • Trouble moving files using IMAP

    I'm using IMAP to access my email at work, but when I move a message from one folder to another, it is copying the messages instead of actually moving them. So for instance, my server has its own deleted items folder in order to fuly delete files from the server. When I am moving a file from my inbox to the deleted items folder, it only appears to be in the deleted items folder in Mail. But when I check it via webmail, the file shows up both in the deleted items folder, and still in my inbox. This is not an issue in Entourage. Any ideas?
    MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    There seems to be a lag with the Mail.app in regards to synchronization with messages stored on the server even when selecting "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" under the Advanced tab for the account preferences.
    As a test, after doing the same try taking the account offline and then online and or quit and re-launch the Mail.app.
    Check if the transferred message is still in both locations on the server.

  • Trouble moving file after rename; can't get the new name, what's missing?

    I know I'm missing a statement to redefine this_item after it has been renamed, but I'm too noobed to know how.
    Files I drop into my layersRenameFolder do get renamed, but then the script fails with error (simplified) "can't get <name of pre-renamed file>"
    So I'm struggling with how to reset the variable so finder knows the new name of the files to move them.
    Note, the code is compilations of other scripts and others corrections. I don't claim to be the original author of any of it. Just trying to piece it together.
    Script follows--------
    on idle
    set PathToDesktop to path to desktop as text
    set layersRenameFolder to (PathToDesktop & "On-Line Proofing1:1 Layout Proofs InDesign:LayoutRenameLAYERS:") as alias
    set outFolder to (PathToDesktop & "On-Line Proofing1:1 Layout Proofs InDesign:Out:") as alias
    tell application "Finder" to set these_items to (every file of layersRenameFolder whose kind contains "PDF")
    --Check to see if there are one or more PDF files in the LayersRename folder on the desktop
    if (count these_items) is greater than 0 then
    tell me to activate
    display dialog "Files located. Script starting!" buttons " " default button 1 giving up after 2
    --Go through all PDF files, one at a time
    repeat with PDFfile in these_items
    --rename PDFFile
    set this_item to contents of PDFfile
    set fileName to name of this_item
    set {TID, text item delimiters} to {text item delimiters, "-"}
    if fileName ends with "1.pdf" or fileName ends with "ALL.pdf" or fileName ends with "CAR.pdf" then set newFileName to (text items 1 thru 2 of fileName) & "1.pdf" as text
    set text item delimiters to TID
    end repeat
    end if
    -- move renamed pdfs to out
    tell application "Finder"
    set name of this_item to newFileName
    move this_item to outFolder with replacing
    end tell
    return 5
    end idle

    When you set the name of a file, the result is just the new name, not a full path. You can rebuild the file path by getting the containing folder and adding the resulting name, for example:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    font-weight: normal;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Finder"
    set theContainer to the container of this_item as text
    set name of this_item to newFileName
    move ((theContainer & the result) as alias) to outFolder with replacing
    end tell

  • Permissions trouble moving files -Help

    I am trying to copy a large folder to my external hard drive. I have done this many times before. However, today, it is telling me that I do not have the permissions to do so.
    What does this mean? How can I correct it?
    When I click "Get Info" on the folder it lists me, staff, and everyone. What is "staff"?
    I am a sole user, and I do not use my computer in a corporate environment.
    Please help!

    From the Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
    Owner, Group, Others
    Abbreviations like "rwx" and "r-x" describe the permission for one user or entity. The permissions set for each file or folder defines access for three entities: owner, group, and others.
    * Owner - The owner is most often the user who created the file. Almost all files and folders in your home directory will have your username listed as the owner.
    * Group - Admin users are members of the groups called "staff" and "admin". The super user "root" is a member of these and several other groups. Non-admin users are members of "staff" only. Typically, all files and folders are assigned to either "staff," "admin," or "wheel".
    * Others - Others refers to all other users that are not the owner or part of the group for a file or folder.
    Check to see that you have Read and Write permissions on the folder in question AND that it is applied to all enclosed folders. (Click the Gear symbol at the bottom of Get Info window to apply to all.)
    Also Get Info on the external drive and tell it to "ignore ownership on this volume."
