Trouble moving  keychain to new system (iMac G5 -- iMac Dual Core (Intel)

Hi. I'm having trouble getting my old keychains on the new intel iMac. I renamed the old ones and put them in my new Dan/Library/Keychains folder. Then I opened the Keychain Access program, clicked edit -> keychain list, clicked the "+" and while I can see the old keychains, they are "greyed out", and cannot be selected. Any tips?
Thanks,

Exactly what model? Do you really mean the old MacBook with the dual core processor or do you mean one using a Core 2 Duo  processor?

  • IMac 8.1 dual core intel 21.5" 2007/8 has vertical streaks on display screen, what is the cause

my display has verticle streaks tat seem to be on everything, they are not differently colored than the background, just spaced about every 2.5-3 inches with a light dark light band space of about 2 inches and then again, repeated across the screen. It shows up on everything, but is more visible on some content than others. is it a video card going or what?

Thanks a lot! If i am going to spend a lot to get it fixed, i think I will wait a while and maybe get a new Imac or maybe a mini mac. with a separate monitor.  I do love my imac, and before we got our macs we had many problems with viruses, crashed hard drives & various other problems. With the Imac, even though my husbands and mine are supposed to be the same they have suttle differences. but I have had a problem with the computer I have on warrenty it needed something replaced, Then this last fall we had 3 power outages in a row. They are on surge protectors, but even so, they shut themselves off, or the power did like a cold boot. after the power came back on, I turned it on, and then shortly thereafter the power went off again. Thensame scenario. and one more power failure. i think it was not the surge as I don;t think there would or could have been one, but because it was basically a cold boot 3 times in a row and the computer did not shut down properly, it crashed and would not come on. My husband, worked on it for a week and finally got a blue screen, and was able to get it going enough to format the hard drive. and re install everything. But a lit of files would not reinstall. I had a small 1 terrabyte backup and it was plugged in and programmed to cycle every day at certain times. Well to make a long story short, it did not like the cold boot any more than the computer. we ere able to save about 1/2 of my files. part of which was my photos. I had had 23,000 photos, and now i had 87,000, unorganized photos with many duplicates. it is a slow proceedure, but I have got that # down to 60,000 so far. I am missing my best folder I had with some genealogy info & other stuff in it. Was my personal folder. It would not load into the re done computer. but I still have the hard drive in case things change. I still love mac & don't think I would go back to PC Sorry to talk your ear off, and thanks again for your help.... Myrna Thordarson

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:

    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

I have tried to install 10.6 and when install is complete it says restart.  The computer restarts but keeps coming to a gray screen with a small black box that says to restart.  The processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 2 GB of memory.  This should be more than adequate.  Any ideas?  Has anyone encountered this before?  I had to restore 10.5 from Time Machine.

Your sig line says iMac, but TMK no iMacs were ever made with 2x2.66 GHz processors. Is this a Mac Pro you are installing on? Are you using a retail Snow Leopaard DVD?

If you still have a use for it it's definately worth it. You can upgrade the ram to a maximum of 6GB and run the current Yosemite OS. Hard drives are cheap and it's not that difficult, here's a step by step guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2134+and+2211+Hard+Drive+Rep lacement/8968

How much sdram can the iMac 2007 20" dual core 2.4gHz take?

    Not SDRAM but SO-DIMM.
The max RAM is offically, 4 GB (two 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM) module but, with larger modules released after that model's specs were written, you can achieve 6GB with one 2GB plus one 4GB module.
You must get the 4GB from a Mac Savvy vendor or it won't work. OWC has the larger modules that are well-tested in Macs:

  • Moving to a new user on my iMac

I've been having problems with Microsoft Word on my iMac (that is running Lion). All sorts of error messages pop up and the program is basically useless to me. In speaking with microsoft they did some troubleshooting and couldn't figure it out, but then suggested I try creating a new  user on my iMac and seeing if I had any problems with word under the new user. That solved the problem. So i'd like to move my iTunes, iPhoto, files, etc to a new user on my iMac and then delete the old user account. I've found a lot of info online about transfering a user account to another mac, but i'm not wanting to transfer my user account. I just want to set a whole new user and start fresh, but bring over my iTunes library, iPhoto, etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Moving files to new system

    Dear all,
My question is pretty similar to the other questions on Time Machine except with one added twist.
I too am using Time Machine to automatically back up most of the files on my system. Note: I have told Time Machine not to back up the libraries or system files and applications.
I am about to move to another country. My dome iMac is now showing its age and although I really like the design, it is time to my a new desktop machine. Therefore, I will probably purchase a new iMac in the new country.
Ideally, I would like to unplug the time machine disk and take that to the new country and restore the files to the new iMac.
I presume the best procedure would be:
    1. Set time machine to back up all files (not sure if there is enough disk space on the disk to do this though)
    2. Action back up now'
    3. On the new iMac (running Snow Leopard), after setting the languages on initial boot, choose restore from backup
If I run out of disk space attempting the full backup, is it possible to use Time Machine to selectively restore folders (and the files contained within)? e.g. user1:Documents or user2:movies
Thanks in advance for all advice,
    Andrew

Migration Assistant sounds best since I will be moving from a PowerPC iMac to a Intel ?? iMac.
Be wary of any 3rd-party apps that may not run on your new Intel Mac.
Then again, there are applications that I have installed (e.g. iWork) and apps that I have downloaded or installed from magazine cover disks that will also need to be moved.. A full backup would seem the best way to move these?
No. Just remove the Applications folder exclusion. +Get Info+ will tell you how big it is.
For system-level apps, there might be some related files and preferences in the top-level Library folder's +Application Support+ and/or Preferences folders, for well-behaved apps (for others, there's no telling where they may put things). So you might want to include Library, then exclude it's other sub-folders. Tedious, but doable.
And if things are still too tight, you might gain a bit of space by excluding the hidden top-level folders, then delete all backups of them per item 12 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
If I try a full backup and it fails due to a lack of disc space, do I have access to the attempted full backup
It won't be a full backup unless you erase your TM disk first. It will just be a large (and time-consuming) incremental backup, containing the things previously excluded.
And it's doubtful it will fail, unless your TM drive isn't at least 20% larger than the data on your internal HD. If it does, un-check the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box in TM Preferences > Options and try again. TM should recover the partial, and delete your oldest backups to make room for the new one. If it needs the space, it will delete all but the most recent.
No, a failed backup will leave a partial, "in.Progress" backup folder that will not appear via +Enter Time Machine+.
and the preceding time machine files?
Yes, unless it deleted them while trying to make room for the new backup. But it won't delete the most recent backup, so it's copy of everything that was on your internal HD, and not excluded, at that time will still be there.
Alternatively, is it possible to force TM to back-up just the Applications (and libraries?) folders?
Only by excluding everything else. Try the other approach above.

  • Trouble moving iPhone to new MacBook Pro

    Hi everyone,
I have recently bought my first Apple computer - a new MacBook Pro. I moved my iPhone from my old PC by copying the 'itunes' folder from it onto the new MacBook Pro (and de-authorising old PC).
But I am having a few problems - most importantly, my iPhone isn't installing updates to apps properly. What happens is I hit 'install' and it begins to install. But then it doesn't complete the install. It says something about not having the app on the phone. So I have turned it off and on again and found that the app will then appear on the screen but not in the folder it used to be in - not sure whether it has updated or not...
Sorry if that's not very clear. Would be very grateful for any help or advice...
    Thanks,
    Nick

You can Download it from- Download CS4 products and than you can install it on your Mac.

  • Can I use firewire to transfer everything from my Macbook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.25 GHz) to the new iMac (2.5GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5)?

I have a MacBook Pro to use at work. It has everything (all genuine softwares, server connection etc). The company is using a contract IT company so connecting to the server and setting email is real issue with me as this IT people can't configure Mac. Last time it took them 1 week to set up everything for me ( me one the phone with them as they aren't coming to our office - they only use QuickViewer to get access to my laptop).
Now the company is buying me an iMac so that I can use the laptop at home. Can I use firewire to transfer everything to the new iMac so that I don't waste my time installing softwares & calling this IT people to set up my email and connection to the server again? If it works do I have to enter serial numbers in again for all the softwares or I have to buy new softwares (I know with Adobe CS - I can only install in one computer)?
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use the adobe suite on the imac you will have to deactivate it on the MBP or it will show up as being used. That is if you can only install it on one computer. Some licenses you can install it on 2 computers but it has to say that on the cd key tag.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience with the contractors. It is not that hard to get stuff like that up and running on the mac.

  • Can Lion be installed on an iMac with a Dual Core processor?

I have an older iMac, model iMac4,1 with an Intel 2.0 GHz Core Duo Processor, 2 GBytes of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.  It is currently running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and works very well.
I've seen conflicting information about the system requirements for upgrading to Lion.  One spec says it must be a Core 2 Duo Processor.   I want to see if I'm asking for trouble to try the upgrade.  System is fully backed up with Time Machine.

Thanks Allan,  for the quick and short answer.  I've been reading other posts (should have done that first) and there are good reasons why it won't work.  Best one is that the Core Duo is a 32 bit processor while the later ones are all 64 bit processors.  Some have actually upgraded to the Core 2 Duo, but have not been successful in installing Lion on the internal drive.
I have a MacBook Pro running Lion and that is good for now.  May try to sell my iMac, although it is a very good computer!

  • Performance on iMac 2.4GHZ, dual core 1GB mem

    Hi there,
Just picked up an iMac and am noticing performance sluggish compared on my 2.2ghz Macbook with 2GB of memory. Is it the extra GB of memory that is making the difference?
I also want to make mention that I did a migration from macbook to iMac and am wondering if something went wrong and this may be the cause of the poor performance on iMac. when running the migration tool I chose to have everything migrated from MacBook to iMac. Maybe I should not have. My main concern was to get applications copied as there were some I had purchased for the Macbook and I wanted them to be on my iMac too. Also I am getting spinning ball a lot on iMac.
What can I do to correct the issue? Should I re-install Leopard? If so can someone direct to me proper instructions to do this?
Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

MacOS X just loves memory and if you upgrade your iMac to 2GBs or more you will notice a difference. Anyway, to see if it is a problem that can be solve with more memory open Activity Monitor, go to the System Memory and see how many pages out you have (if the number is too high or close to the number of pages in, then you should get more memory).
