Trouble networking iBook G4 to Windows XP PC

I'm a little ignorant on the subject of networking, but I've been trying/struggling to network (via a single cross-over Ethernet cable) my iBook G4 with my Windows XP desktop PC. Both computers tell me that the network connection is there, but I can't seem to get beyond that. My goal for now is just to be able to share files (maybe share the PC's internet connection at a later date).
Of course, I've selected "Personal File Sharing" and "Windows Sharing" on the Mac. I've also tried disabling Firewalls on both computers, but still no luck.
1) I know I'm really displaying my ignorance here, but I don't need any additional software to pull this off, do I? I've read enough to get the impression that I should be able to do it without any.
2) Also, I know I'm supposed to designate one of the computers to be the server and the other one the client, but I'm not sure how to tell if I've done this properly or not. I used the PC's "Network Set-Up Wizard" and I think I've got the PC se up as the server.
On the Mac: When I try to use "Connect to Server" (under the Finder's "Go" button) it says "No response from the server. Please try again." Am i correct in assuming that this means the Mac has successfully reached the PC, but the PC isn't responding (maybe still set up incorrectly)?
On the PC: When I try to locate the Mac from the PC, I search in "My Network Places", then "Entire Network", then "Microsoft Windows Network", then "MSHOME" (this is the workgroup name I've set up on BOTH computers). When I click on "MSHOME" I get the following error message: "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions...The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
I AM, of course, the administrator of my would-be 2-computer home network, so no help there. Any ideas as to why I, the sole owner/administrator of my PC would NOT have permission to use my own workgroup? I'm thinking that if I did have permission to use it, then the Mac would be able to access it too.
One other silly question:
When I see the recommendation for these SMB formats:
smb://DNSname/sharename or...
\\DNSname\sharename
does "sharename" mean the computer's network name or the name of the folder I'm trying to share, or what? My DNS name is currently set up to be the same as my PC's IP address - is that a problem at all?
ANY help on ANY of the questions I've asked would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.2)   Windows XP PC

iFelix -
Thanks for the tips. The step-by-step advice on the website: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3020.html is great! I’m actually running Mac OS X 10.3.2, but I found the corresponding page for 10.3.x and read through it too. I had already taken all the steps indicated on that page 6 or 7 times, but I tried them again – still no luck.
Regarding connecting from the Mac using “Connect to Server”:
Typing in: \\PC’s IP Address\PC’s name or…
\\PC’s IP Address\Desired PC sharefolder
Gets me the following error message:
“No response from the Server. Please try again.”
Typing in: smb://IP Address of PC (recommended on your help site)
(Or ANY combination that has “smb” in it)
Makes the computer search for about 3 full minutes then I get the following error
report:
“The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in smb://192.168.0.1 could not be read or written. (Error code – 36).
Regarding connecting from the PC using “My Network Places” then “Add a Network Place”:
Typing in \\Mac’s IP address\short name (this is the address that the Mac says Windows
users can access the Mac from) gets me the error message:
“The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please try another.”
So basically, I can’t access either computer from the other one. I know that makes it sound like the problem is with the LAN connection, but my PC tells me that the Local Area Connection status is: “Connected.”
I haven’t yet tried ICS for internet sharing, but I’ll let you know how that goes.
Once again, thanks for the advice. If you or anyone else has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

  • Trouble printing from mac to windows printer

I purchased my first mac last weekend and successfully set it up on my home network which is shared with my windows xp desktop. My HP deskjet printer is shared on the network through my desktop windows pc (not on a separate printer router). My mac recognizes the printer on the network but it prints meaningless garb when I ask it to print a document. Any suggestions to rectify my printing problem???
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I followed the instructions at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html and am having the same issue. Whether setting up manually or using Bonjour, it seems that you have to select an Apple Driver. The problem is that the Windows 7 does not provide Apple drivers. Luckily, I have an old XP installation CD so I can access the printer drivers I need, but because I already installed the printer drivers from my printers CD Windows will automatically install with that driver, not giving me the "have disk" option.
So I tried to install with Bonjour again, which allowed me to pull up the drivers from teh XP installation disk, but then gave me an error that I didn't have permissions to install the selected printer.
So I deleted the Canon driver for my printer from Windows 7 and went through the process described at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3012.html again. This time I was able to select the Apple Color Laserwriter printer from the XP installation CD, but I got an error message saying that Windows was unable to find an appropriate driver.
At this point, after a couple hours trying to do a simple file share, which should only take 30 seconds, I'm giving up being able to print to a printer connected to a mac from my Windows 7 laptop. Now I have to open files on the mac from the network file share to print.
Mixed having both Macs and Windows machines on the same network is a recipe for a headache.

  • Can see my networked ibook but greyed out after trying to connect

When I try to connect to my networked ibook everthing looks normal at first - I can see it in the network window, after selecting it I choose connect, enter user name and password and click ok, I select the name of the volume to mount from the list and .... well, normally within moments I would make the connection, see the HD etc. Now, suddenly, nothing happens. If I try again, this time after pressing connect I see the volume to mount list as before but the choices are greyed out. Any ideas?
edit Oops! It was greyed out because it was already mounted!!

  • Windows 7 SP1 client file lock on network share hosted ny WIndows 2012 Server

    Hello
I have one strange problem after migration from Windows 2003 Server to Windows 2012 Server R2 Standard.
All migration tasks went well but two things do not work.
In Computer Management you have The Opened Files feature and if you open any file that is located on the network share hosted by Windows 2012 R2 form Windows 7 SP1 and then close it
it remains open in the Opened Files tab (even if you wait an hour).  There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
The session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Can someone help me with that ?
    About the environment:
It is one server Domain migrated form 2003 to 2012R2.
The domain and forest level was raised to 2012 R2.
I have made clean install of Windows 2012 R2 and then migrated AD.
    Best Regards
    Sebastian Sala

    Hi Sebastian,
    >>There is no problem with Windows XP SP3. The issue exist only with Windows 7.
T>>he session view of sessions to the file server do not work. If I try to open it I get the message that the application is not responding.
Based on the description, please check event logs in Event Viewer to see if there were some related events logged. Besides, does this phenomenon happen all Windows 7 clients? We can try to restart the client to see if it helps.

Are you using DHCP to allocate IP addresses via your router or Static IP allocation?
You may have an IP conflict in your network.
Check on your various network configuration parameters in your iPad, PC and WiFi router.

  • Networking ~ File Sharing With Windows Vista

Alright, I've browsed enough of the web and I've tried a lot to try and resolve this issue, but none of it has worked at all for me. Here's my scenario about as specific as it gets:
I have a home private network consisting of two Windows Vista PCs, a HP Photosmart Printer, a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. The network is routed through a Medialink MWN-WAPR300N router connected to a Time Warner Cable modem which goes to the Internet. My primary PC, the MacBook Pro, and the iPhone 5 all connect wirelessly; the other PC and printer connects via Ethernet. All devices connect to the Internet flawlessly, and they are all assigned a static LAN IP address through the router because I portforward to one of my PCs, and the router requires it. The network was originally configured using one of the PCs as a Private network under the default workgroup, "WORKGROUP". Everything else router-specific is automatic.
Here's the problem: My MacBook and my primary PC do not communicate over the network at all. Both the MacBook and my primary PC can file share with the other PC connected via Ethernet, and they can both print just fine. After using LAN Scan v1.02 by Nutec Apps, LLC on my iPhone however, neither my primary PC nor the MacBook Pro shows up on the list of LAN devices. But that's not all, the MacBook Pro always recognizes the other PC via Ethernet in Finder, and the MacBook Pro can be found in both PC's Network list. However, when I try to connect to it via my primary PC, it says that "[My MacBook] is not a valid host name." What?
To futher satisfy my curious mind, I set up a small Peer-to-Peer network between my primary PC and the MacBook Pro via Ethernet. Both devices instantly recognized each other and connected without any issues. I was able to transfer files at approximately 100mb/s and I was stoked. I then disconnected and tried to transfer over the network again, and there was nothing there. I have even done ping tests over the network to the MacBook Pro's LAN IP address, and it came back with no response.
I've restarted both computers numerous times, played around with file sharing settings, set appropriate sharing permissions, disabled firewalls, enabled sharing for Windows on the MacBook Pro, enabled file sharing on the Windows PC, you name it. I'm sure there is a small fix that I may have overlooked, but I cannot figure out what the problem is for the life of me. Because the operation worked via Ethernet, and it's working wireless-to-Ethernet, but not wireless-to-wireless, I have a feeling that the problem is related to one or both of the wireless configurations.
Thanks in advance for any help provided, if there is anything I missed I will be happy to proivde more details per request. This issues has been bugging me for weeks now and it's time I seeked professional help

Alright, I am still having the problem and I have the results of the ifconfig command if it will be of any help to any Apple techies out there:

The section in question is where it says bridge100 because the IP address listed under that section reads 192.168.2.1, as previously suggested. However another IP address is listed above it as 192.168.1.104, which is exactly what it should be as I have it assigned via DHCP in the router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because this is driving me crazy.
PS: I apologize for the confusion. I made a typo in my previous post about my MacBook's LAN IP address. It should be 192.168.1.104, not 103. I can confirm that it is listed as *.104 in my router and it shows *.104 on the above ifconfig. Please ignore the *.103, thanks

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

  • Trouble renaming files/folders in Windows 7

We have a client who is experiencing the following problem. We have witnessed it ourselves but have yet to find a solution. It is happening to more than one user at the same location. The files in question are stored on a network share from a Windows 2012
    R2 server. Any ideas? Thanks
When I am renaming a file in Windows Explorer and use the mouse to select a part of the current file name, Windows frequently will force a selection of the entire current file name rather than the part of the name I am trying to select.
When this occurs, I have to deselect the entire filename and try to select the segment of the filename I am trying to copy once again. Worse yet - it is not a consistent behavior, but when it does occur it typically takes 3 attempts before it will actually
let you select the segment you are after without selecting the rest of the name on you once again.
Even worse still, is that a similar behavior emerges when trying to select a part of a file that you want to either delete, or replace with text that is currently in the clipboard. You select the segment you mean to replace, and (6 times out of 10 I'd average)
the entire filename selects itself at the very instant you hit delete (or paste). This deletes the entire filename, rather than the portion you intended (or replaces it with your clipboard content, depending on if you hit delete or CTRL-V).

If you are running 11.0.0, there is a chance that updates to 11.0.2 will resolve your issue. As mentioned, the information we get from your post is not enough to say much more. The versions are useful and what you mean when you say it stopped working. That could mean so many things to us, we have no clue what might be the issue. In the meantime, try the updates if you have not done them. You might also go to Help>Repair (or Start>Control Panel>Programs & Preferences  and do a repair from there.

    Hey robr72339266,
With a single user license, you can install Acrobat on maximum two computers, say, your laptop at work and desktop at office.
But, you cannot use Acrobat on both the machines simultaneously.
You will first need to deactivate Acrobat from the old machine, then install and activate the software on the new OS with the same serial key.

    Thanks for the update.
nothing is getting installed, copied or otherwise loaded onto my computer....first the program starts to load, then it asks for my serial number, then it goes out and seems to check the serial number then it says it can't be installed then it erases everything it just spent 10 minutes loading.
In view of the above and your prior descriptions, have you tried alternative installation files?
If you want to give a look to that approach, please download and install the tryout files for Premiere Elements 9 from the following web site and then insert your purchased serial number into them during installation.
With this route, you need to carefully carry out the web site's "Note: Very Important Instructions" in order to avoid an Access Denied message.
