Trouble opening attachments

I find I am getting attachments that I can't open on my Mac, but have no problem opening on my PC. (I'm new to Mac so running both machines now as I am in changeover phase) The attachments I am having problems with seem to be WORD docs with the suffix .docx which I think means they were generated in Windows 7, the newer system, and also .pdf files. In both cases they arrive on my Mac as files marked winmail.dat and they won't open. Tried everything I can think of, but not many options - can't convert them or save them. Talked to Mac technical support and was told it's an issue with my Internet provider (Bell Aliant in my case) so called them and they say it's not their issue, so I'm caught in customer limbo here. All suggestions welcome. One related thing. A friend recommended software called TNEF, which can be used to convert any files that won't open. This has worked on some of these winmail.dat files but not all.
Thanks.

Winmail.dat is an internal structure from Outlook. If you are seeing this file it is due to a misconfiguration somewhere on the PC side of things. Here is a document from Microsoft that explains how to fix it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138053
The above document will be no help to you. You have to send it to whomever sent you the e-mail messages and have them make the necessary changes.

I can't open attachments. When I tap the attachment, I get a message that says: "attachment too large".
I'm sure it's something simple....any help is appreciated.

There may be a IT policy preventing you from opening the attachments. Speak to your BES administrator. If that is the culprit and they refuse to change the policy than you are SOL on opening attachments.

  • PC user has trouble opening my photo attachments

The person on the receiving end has trouble opening and saving my jpeg (72 dpi). They appear in the body of both e-mail, hers and mine. She told me to send it as an attach and I said that's what I did. She is a graphic web designer and I can't imagine why she can't save them easily by right clicking.
    What gives?

You didn't answer every question, namely this one.
+If you are using RTF for message composition, are you adding attachments below all message text including a signature if one is used?+
RTF with Tiger Mail is really HTML but certain things must occur for HTML to be implemented with the message body.
Selecting a font or different font size and/or color via the Font panel when composing a message, changing the some of the message format - adding bold. italics or underlining selected text, using a Signature that was composed with HTML or RTF or that includes a graphic insert.
Windows Outlook has always had various problems with Mail's RTF and the extent of the problem depends on the Windows version and/or Outlook version used by the recipient.
For some reason when using RTF for message composition, Outlook has problems when adding attachments anywhere in the message body besides below ALL message text including a signature if one is used.
If Plain Text was supported with the exchange of email only, most if not all problems experienced with the exchange of email and message attachments would be eliminated so using Plain Text instead of RTF should resolve it with this particular problem being with Outlook recipients only. For such an old and mature email client, Outlook still has its share of bugs.

  • Troubles with opening attachments when user have restristed priviledge to run executable code only from ProgramFiles and Windows folders.

I try to restrict users from executing any potentialy dangerous files. So according to Windows policies I set. Users can run any application from Program Files, Program Files (x86), Windows and all users' desktop folder. Users have no permission to write anything in this folders. When user duble clicks for example *.doc document on his desktop - document opens with MS Word just fine. But when user try to open this document from e-mail attachment directly (selecting open with MS Word, instead of saving) - he sees an error - "This action is restricted by local policy. Ask your system administrator." (not exact text).
So I want, users able to open attachments from Thunderbird automatically, but not able to run any application or link, except Program Files, Program Files (x86), Windows and all users' desktop folder. How can I get this result?
    Thanks in advance.
    Serious Diman.
P.S. Sorry for my bad english. It's not my native language.

    Thanks for answering.
I found out what was happening.
This strange "bug" affects several computers with Windows 7 Ultimate in my case.
When you create SRP (software restriction policies) it creates two default rules for running programs: windows folder and Program Files folder. Manually I add "C:\Program Files (x86)" in unrestricted locations. BUT Windows and Program Files folder linked in default rules not directly, but through registry keys. And this part seems tricky. You CAN run executables from Program Files. You CAN run executables from Program Files (x86). But if Thunderbird or Firefox try to run MSword, or excel or writer for opening *.doc or *.odt or some other downloaded file - running from Program Files blocked by SRP.
So to resolve this problem you just need to replace rules for undirect paths like %HKLM/software/microsoft/windows ... etc% with direct ones, such as "C:/Windows" and "C:/Program Files/". After this all works fine. Attachments and downloaded files opens automatically without problems.

  • I am having trouble downloading attachments from email

I have an iPad 2 that has been upgraded to IOS 7.0.4. This was a problem before the update - which is the reason for the update but that's another story.
So for now, iPad 2 IOS 7.0.4 16GB wifi/cell model
I am having trouble downloading attachments. Not all. but some. a movie in particular and some documents.
I would thingk it was the email account but I can open it on my iPhone without issue.
I would've thought the link was bad but I forwarded it one of my other email accounts and it opens fine.
I have restarted, rebooted, deleated the mail account and reloaded it.
Still nothing. I have tried to save the video by clicking the "Save Video" icon when you tap and hold the video but it never saves.
Sometimes it will act like it is going to save because I get a black screen and a rotating flower in the middle of the screen and it says "Loading" but it never does anything. Other times it will just give me a message that says "Can't download attachement".
    Any one have any thoughts?

What is your connection via speedtest.net ?
Check istumbler or netstumbler to verify network interference
Make sure DNS is set correctly (settings - general - network - configure DNS - automatic)

  • Having Trouble Opening TIFF Files

I'm having trouble opening TIFF files into Camera Raw. I have checked all my settings in Adobe Bridge and everything seems to be saying that TIFF files should open in Camera Raw when I click on then int and then into photoshop when finished editing in camera raw.
I'm trying to open 32 bit HDR images saved as a TIFF file into Camera Raw, and there seems to be nothing I can do to get them there. I have tried everything I can think of. When I right click on it (cmd click I'm on a mac) the option to open in camera Raw isn't there. I have tried clicking and dragging the image into Photoshop to try and force it maybe to open into Camera Raw, and I have opened photoshop and tried opeing it up from mini Bridge. In mini bridge I have the option to open the image into Camera Raw when I click this nothing happens.
I'm not sure what else to try I'm on CS6 and Camera Raw 7.0 .

    Alright I'll try that thanks!

It might be that you need to update camera raw to version 8.3 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop or bridge.
(i don't remember exactly in which version of acr that was added, but probably after version 7.0)

  • Cannot open attachments with my firefox. my wife can with IE

with firefox I cannot open attachments in my emails. I have been forwarding these emails to my wife's email. She is using internet explorer by yahoo through AT&t and then I have no trouble opening them on her email.

hello jrhjmh, are you a yahoo mail user and does it work when you access yahoo mail through this link?: https://mail.yahoo.com/
    reference: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/971042
I'm not sure as to what exactly is going on, but it looks like yahoo has changed something on their side that makes certain old urls/servers dysfunctional (you may be currently using those because you've bookmarked them before or through your history) - at least quite a number of other users have reported that...
<br>so using the generic address https://mail.yahoo.com/ as a bookmark should lead you to the current & working url.

  • Why can't I use adobe flash player to open attachments

Why can't I use adobe to open attachments - have downloaded latest version but still get a black page

You're probably using IE11. This is a known problem with Internet Explorer 11, which Microsoft has been aware of since October 18 when they released their latest "untested" browser. The pages can't recognize the browser, so they don't recognize any of the plugins, like Flash Player. So far, Microsoft has made NO indication that they have any plan to fix it soon.
Microsoft's recommendation is to use Compatibility View for affected pages, and "pretend" you're using an different browser. Trouble with that is it has seen limited success at best, and you have to individually enable it for EVERY page that has problems.
I'm not big on "pretending" so I recommend actually using another browser, at least until Microsoft gets their act together and fixes IE..
    Firefox (from Mozilla)
    Opera (from Opera)
    Safari (from Apple)
    Chrome (from Google)
ANY of those will work where IE11 won't, with the Flash Player Plug-in (For all other browsers), and Chrome doesn't even need that because it has its own Flash Player plugin built in.

  • Can't open attachments

I'm having trouble opening any attachments in mail on my iphone 6. I thought the new update would correct this issue, but it doesn't.

it won't let me download and then open any attachments in mail like it did on my old iphone 4s.
.mov and .docx are the ones that I open the most.
I can't view any of them. It just goes to a grey screen with the name of the file.

  • How to change default to open attachments

How do I change the default that opens attachments? For me it's Textedit which is fine but for my wife who has her own profile on same computer it's AbiWord for some reason, and it's terrifically slow. I have looked in Help, Missing Manual, etc but no luck, I'm sure I did know the answer at one stage.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Select one of the affected files then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the desired application from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button. This will cause all similar files to be opened by the selected application.
An alternative or rather an extension to the above is to download the freeware RCDefaultApp preference pane and install it. It will let you set defaults for just about everything. A very handy bit of software.

  • I have trouble opening and closing tabs in the update 3.6 versions, what's going on?

After the recently updated 3.6 versions came out, I started having trouble opening and closing tabs. Is anyone else having this problem with the updated versions?

  • I cannot open attachments

Hi, when I try to open an attachment most times it does not work. I do not get an error message, but a window blinks instantly (i cannot read what it says, it might be the "download" window from the shape and nothing happens, the external application does not open or leads the file (if opened already). I have to save the file first and then I can open without any problem. This issue is not specific to any file type. If I try to open a file several times at some point it might work.
    Thanks!

McAfee the Thunderbird wrecker we should call that product. It has been causing problems with Thunderbird for around three years making Thunderbird look bad. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee
I suggest you try restarting Windows 8 in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Can you open attachments in windows safe mode?

  • Need to synch calendar and contacts, but also open attachments with OWA

I have a client with a Tour 9630.  They are using Exchange 2007 so we cannot use BES or BPS on that server (their only one).
His biggest gripe using the redirector was that he could not open attachments.  After doing some digging, I found out that you cannot open attachments unless you are using the BIS service and connecting through OWA.
SO...fought the authentication issues since they have a self-signed certificate on their Exchange box...turned off all the authentication and woila..OWA worked like a charm.
NOW, though, his contacts and calendar no longer synch since he is just hitting the OWA mail!
Is there a way to enable opening attachments while still synching calendar and contacts?
I turned off redirector on the pc since OWA was working.
If I turn the redirector back on to keep the synch going, will he get duplicates of mail?

I've gotten this 4403 error before, and somehow resolved it without knowing how.
THIS TIME, however, I  tried turning off the synch on my Documents-To-Go, and that fixed things.
Checking on other discussions on the internet regarding this "Protocol Error: Too many files. (4403)", I'm seeing a pattern of Documents-To-Go when resident apps are listed, which seems to tentatively confirm my conclusion. The obvious implication here is that one or more versions of Docs-To-Go have a conflict with something in one or more versions of the Palm OS, and/or other 3rd party apps.
I've be interested in whether this works in other users' experiences.
