Trouble opening .avi files

I'm trying to open an .avi file that I downloaded, but I keep getting an error. With .avi files I've made (through iMovie for example) and other files I already have, they open just fine in any program: VLC, Quick Time, Quick Time X, etc. But when I try to open these particular files, with no visible difference from the others, I get the following error:
http://grab.by/1iOY (It's an image)
Honestly, I've never had this issue before... I don't know where to start. I tried opening in multiple programs, I think I have all my codecs, etc. Any ideas? 0.o Like I said, existing .avi files I can open fine. I suspected it might be the file, but I downloaded multiple files. (Yet, some .avis I download work fine... this is all confusing.)
Thanks!

I suspect that this file was corrupted along the way.
Have you tried deleting the original and downloading a new copy?
If you're comfortable with it, you could send me an e-mail with a link to the file (or post the URL here, possibly) and I can see if the file will play on my machine. Click on the "send e-mail" icon in the upper-right of my post.

Hi I just got loads of avi movies from a friend but they won't open, he's an XP user and the files are mainly .avi
When I try to launch one it gives me the error message that some software is missing and takes me to the QT w/s where there are many options although it doesn't tell me which update I need.
If I try to open the files in real player it opens a white screen with no picture or sound.
    Does anybody have any idea?

You gents need to download some of the more common codecs to allow QT to play those AVI files.
DivX and XviD for video; perhaps AC3 for audio. All for intel. Search this forum or google it. This question has been dealt with numerous times.
As AVI is an all-in-one container, there are exceptions, but DivX alone will give you playability for a large majority of those files.

  • I can't open .avi files in Photoshop CS5

I used to be able to open .avi files in Photoshop just fine, but I’ve just tried opening one again after a couple of months and I can’t. It’s just black blankness. I have no problem with .mp4 files, but unfortunately, most of the videos I'm trying to make gifs out of are in .avi format.
Is it because I've updated QuickTime? Or is it that Adobe CS no longer supports .avi files? It says here that Photoshop CS6 supports the .avi format.
    My specs:
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.4
    Photoshop CS5.1
    QuickTime Player 10.3

  • Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed

I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks

And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously.

  • Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6

Unable to open AVI files in Photoshop CS6
I am running PS6 and want to open and edit AVI files. When I try to do that I get an error message saying "the video file cannot be opened" . This seems to apply to ALL avis - yet I can open and edit MP4, MMV etc. I installed Gspot to track whether it was a codec issue and when I try to open ANY file I get this error message : "Warning: DirectShow crashed while GSpot was attempting to obtain information about a codec.  This is usually due to damaged, misconfigured, conflicting, or poorly written codec drivers.  It is possible, perhaps even likely, that other media players will crash when they attempt to play this file as well, as most of them will also use DirectShow.  GSpot was able to intercept the crash, and has attempted to identify the codec or filter involved; uninstalling or reinstalling this codec or filter may solve the problem.  The codec was tentatively identified as:  C:\Windows\system32\imaadp32.acm Unknown video codec #11" I have NO idea where to go from here. I see a site to download the "imaadp32.acm"  codec but what about the "Unknown video codec #11". What the heck is that and what do I do about it. Any help would be appreciate, Cliff
ps I should add that the avi files DO open and play in Bridge. I have the latest Quicktime. Everything is up to date and PS and the computer is otherwise working perfectly !

    Thanks Curt and 'Mylenium'
I did re-set the prefs - but to no avail
I checked and my graphics driver and audio is all up to date.
No sure how to verify Windows Media Player's hardware acceleration options. I opened WMP Options /Perfformance tab and under Cd the DirX tab is checked.
Running Windows Vista - so does the same caution apply regarding a re-install of Windows Media Components and DirectX ?
Appreciate your help with this somewhat frustrating issue. I am converting some old 8mm film to avi with the hope of doing some edits then burning to DVD.

  • Having Trouble Opening TIFF Files

I'm having trouble opening TIFF files into Camera Raw. I have checked all my settings in Adobe Bridge and everything seems to be saying that TIFF files should open in Camera Raw when I click on then int and then into photoshop when finished editing in camera raw.
I'm trying to open 32 bit HDR images saved as a TIFF file into Camera Raw, and there seems to be nothing I can do to get them there. I have tried everything I can think of. When I right click on it (cmd click I'm on a mac) the option to open in camera Raw isn't there. I have tried clicking and dragging the image into Photoshop to try and force it maybe to open into Camera Raw, and I have opened photoshop and tried opeing it up from mini Bridge. In mini bridge I have the option to open the image into Camera Raw when I click this nothing happens.
I'm not sure what else to try I'm on CS6 and Camera Raw 7.0 .

    Alright I'll try that thanks!

It might be that you need to update camera raw to version 8.3 by going to Help>Updates from within photoshop or bridge.
(i don't remember exactly in which version of acr that was added, but probably after version 7.0)

  • Can't open avi files in quicktime 7.5

When I try to open avi files with quicktime .5 i am told that Quicktime needs soe extra files and am taken to the quicktime page on appl.com What files do i need? Any suggestions welcome!

'AVI' is a container which can house a variety of codecs.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, 3.1, 3.1.1, QT 7.3, 7.4.x and 7.5 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.11 and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from (you may need a different site for the US):
    http://uk.real.com/player/mac/
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates up to and including 2008-003. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And now there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash should be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards):
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

  • Trouble opening pdf files on version 9.4...

Hi, I recently updated (10/7/10) my Adobe from 9.34 to 9.4 and now I'm having trouble opening my files that were working fine with 9.34.. I read the other post but the problem still seems to occur for my mac..the error message I am getting is..
Adobe Reader could not open 'maher39767_0324639767_02.11_chapter11.spdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
I reinstalled Adobe and I'm still getting the problem...
    Please help.

Does this happen with any pdf or this particular pdf ? If it happens with this pdf only then may be the pdf is not properly downloaded or may be damaged.

  • QT does not open AVI file

    hello,
I have installed Perian but with Mountain Lion QT does not open AVI file (no audio and no video)
    do you have any suggestion?

I am using QT pre-installed in Mountain (should be X)
QT X can only play files using codecs it is programmed to expect to be used in the loaded file container/with the loaded file's stated extension. For example, QT X will not play a "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 file with an MOV or VOB file extension but will usually play the file if the extension is changed to TS, MPG, or MPEG. On the other hand, the QT 7 Player tends to look at the internal header information and select a codec based on what the file says it needs for the actual playback. Thus, the QT 7 Player may frequently play files that the QT X Player does not play.
Besides supporting the the AVI file container, your QT system must also be configured to support the actual audio and video codecs contained in the AVI file and not have a "conflict" problem. For instance, Motion JPEG support for QT was dropped with the release of Lion. AVI files containing MJPEG video thay plays correctly under Snow Leopard will no longer play under Lion or Mountain Lion with additional support. In this case, Perian still provides such support. It also still provides support for DIVX, XVID, 3IVX, and similar third-party codecs commonly found in AVI containers. However, Perian support for such files can become conflicted if you have also installed the actual third-party codecs along with Perian and the different codecs fight over which is to be used for playback.  This is why it is important to know the actual codecs used to create files using generic file containers like AVI and MOV and the codec components actually installed on your system, as well as, their potential for creating conflicts.
As to the actual playback of files, there are basically only three options (as indicated by the URL provided above:
    1) You can conform the file and/or your system codec component configuration to play your files using a QT player app if possible,
    2) You can use an alternative media player app the contains "native" support for the file containera and/or codecs used to create the files, or
    3) You can convert the file to a compression format and file container that that is already natively supported by QT-based applications.
Since do not seem to know or are unwilling to identify the specific codecs causing a problem here, the only workflows left to you would be to try playing the file in an alternative media player which contains its own built-in codec support (e.g., VLC) or convert the files to something your current QT system configuration can handle (e.g., use a converter with built-in codec support like HandBrake).

I'm having trouble opening pdf files for weeks now. Can someone help me?

    Hi,
Do you have Adobe Reader installed on your device? You can check it under Settings-->Apps. If Adobe Reader is installed on your device and still the pdfs open in some other app, then you might have chosen that app to be the default app for always opening pdfs. You can clear the defaults for that application. Just go to Settings-->App--->Polaris(or any other app where the files open)--->Clear Defaults. Next time you try to open a pdf, you will be presented with the options again. Hope this helps. Please let us know if you still face some issues.
    Thanks.

  • Can't open avi-files

    Hi out there.
    I have a big problem:
My new MacBook Pro with Tiger has goten sick. QuickTime refuses to open avi-files.
    – I can't open them in either web, the player or other programs (fx Final Cut Pro)
    – I have installed a xvid codec some weeks ago (one of the recommended by Apple)
    – I have installed Flip4Mac
    What can I do?
    Kind regards
    Esben, Copenhagen

Get rid of Xvid and any other codecs you have manually installed ( like 3ivX or DivX) and download and install the free Perian plugin from Perian.org.
Leave Flip4mac alone as it is for WMV files.
Note there is no such thing as a "normal" AVI file because AVI, just like Quicktime is a container for a video that can have one of many codecs and the codec is what you need to play the content. Perian provides a swiss army knife of codecs in one component - however it does not play well with the hodgepodge of new codecs people have added so they need to go.
