Trouble opening "best quality" slideshow file ...

I'm very confused. Most of my slideshows have been created with best performance selected in the prefs. I just made a show on my 12" Powerbook using best quality. When I tried to open its file again, I got a spinning beach and had to force quit. I then launched from an older show that had best performance selected and iDVD had no problem. I tried opening the best quality show again, and forget it. Beach ball time. I force quitted.
After a couple more failed attempts to open that file, I repaired permissions and chucked out my preferences plist. I tried opening again and got a window saying my preferences for the file didn't match the default preference and did I want that changed, and I clicked okay, and got the spinning beach ball ... I force quitted, went back and this time when the window opened I selected a different option, which directed iDVD to update the show. Then the file opened. However, the file is now set for best performance, as that's the default.
This has left me confused about a couple of things. (1) It seems the original setting for best quality threw off iDVD, but I'm not sure why. (2) The quality/performance setting is general, but shows are unique files. How is all this supposed to jibe in using files where some are set for best quality and others for best performance?
Also, I set my preference for best quality right at the start of making that problematic slideshow file. This seemed more sensible than setting it before burning, as wouldn't background encoding be going on otherwise? And isn't the lack of that what makes the quality better later on? But perhaps that's what hung up iDVD? Like I said, I'm confused. I simply want to use best quality for a show and be able to get into the file again later on after closing it.
Any suggestions? Or ideas why iDVD kept spinning out on that file? Sorry this is so long .......... Any help will be very appreciated.

Thanks for your response, but I'm not sure I
understand. What does "best quality" actually mean,
then?
Without getting to bogged down in explainations - talking about single-layer discs - Best Peformance uses fixed bit-rate compression for content under 60 minutes. Best Quality uses on-pass variable bit-rate compression for content under 120 minutes. It generally happens that for content under 60 minutes Best Performance give better quality than Best Quality.
Also, do you have any idea why a show done using the
best quality pref would result in the application
getting hung up?
BTW, my file is just a wee slideshow of 98 jpgs.
About 12 minutes long.
It MIGHT have been the presence of already encoded assets from Best Performance. (Best Performance can do background encoding because it uses a fixed bit-rate - Best Quality CAN'T do background encoding because the encoding bit-rate isn't set until all the content has been added.)

  • Best quality slideshow in iDVD

    Hi,
    I made a slideshow in iPhoto, imported it into iMovie, added music and exported the slideshow to "Media Browser." The slideshow is about 4 minutes long. When I play the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie the pictures and text are crystal clear but after I import them into iDVD and burn them to disc, the text is very hard to read and some of the photos seems to vibrate. Also the overall quality of the photos is not very good. The sounds is fantastic so I am happy with that. When I exported from iMovie I used the largest possible setting (I tried it once with the 2nd largest and it was much worse). In iDVD I tried Best Performance once and also Professional (the latter was better). I am using Verbatim DVD-R discs. I have plenty of free memory on my computer. I made a similar project once before, using the same camera to shoot the photos, and it turned out great. The only difference that I can think of between the projects is that I didn't use a theme in the first project.
    I'm wondering how I can improve the quality of the photos in the finished dvd.
    Thanks for any ideas!

    DVDs are just standard definition devices - for NTSC, think 640x480 square pixels.
    For best quality in NTSC use 720x540 pixels for 4:3 video and 854x480 for widescreen. Using more pixels does NOT produce a better DVD!

  • I am having trouble opening a large Excel file (xlsx) on my iPad3

    Do I need to purchase an app to be able to open this large Excel file?

    Of course. No computer will open a file without an appropriate program to do so.  Search the App Store for "spreadsheets" to get an idea of what software is available. Aples own "Numbers" might be considered, or "QuickOffice" or several others,

  • WHAT IS A BEST QUALITY QT FILE?

    At the expense of causing some aggravation(!) I'm here going to try to simplify a request that has obviously got a bit tangled in another thread 'Quicktime Pixellation...etc" below, and not getting any positive answer.
    *Please can one of the Top Users tell me the difference between a DV .mov file and a .dv file? I need to master in top quality QT.*
    I've had the advice from Kirk that .mov is double the size of .dv because +'it separates the audio and video tracks'+ but, is that all?
    I've found checking High Quality in the Visual Settings of Movie Properties substantially improves the apparent resolution on playback of a .dv file, ie no pixellation (which especially shows on titles). However if you want to Save Changes (ie High Quality) after viewing, QT makes a double file size .mov copy. Is this therefore better master quality? Or is it identical info with a 'visual trick' on playback?

    In 'simple layman's' terms - how is a saved High Quality file likely to affect my computer or when exporting it into another format?
    It won't have any effect whatsoever. As QTKirk previously pointed out, this is a a "playback" setting only. Since the data is not "rendered for display" as part of the actual conversion, the saved data goes directly from the file to the encoder unless you are making modifications which are applied prior to the transcoding of data.
    can't decide what to do on this one (a DVD burnt from a 'standard' QT.dv comes out visually as clean as a whistle, but QTplayer of that file is v. poor)
    To some extent you are comparing apples and oranges here. Both are based on the same data. However, in one case that data has been transcoded to MPEG2 before burning and is played back by an MPEG-2 player while in the other, the original data is being played back at its original data rate. Remember the answer you previously got regarding the demands on CPU and graphics card and the dropping of frames? Well, remember that the playback demands for an 8.5 mbps MPEG-2 FILE is about 30% that of your DV-25's 28.5 mbps (i.e., disregarding all other factors such as DIFFERING codec efficiency, complexity, etc). You may also note that Apple usually limits its QT full HD trailers to a range of 8 to 12 mbps at 24 fps for H.264/AAC content which is targeted for "newer" platforms as the best combination in terms of quality, bandwidth/storage space, and codec efficiency. Still these are matters that each individual must decide for his or her own self when creating their target output. It is a highly subjective decision making process with no right or wrong answers -- only what is "best" in terms of your current project. Virtually no two individuals see the same content in exactly the same light but rather in relation to their needs/desires of the moment.

  • Best quality, smallest file size

    I have a 3.5 minute motion project which includes the opening credits to a video I am working on - how do I go about getting this into Final Cut Pro with the highest quality possible? I am very new to Final Cut Studio, so some input would really be appreciated. The video is already an hour long, and this needs to fit on a 120 minute DVD, so file size is crucial - unless it will be taken care of when the entire DVD is compressed. Thanks!

    What is your current timeline format in FCP? Either bring the .motn file directly into FCP (it'll be treated as a QuickTime file) or export with the same codec/dimensions as your timeline.
    Then export your timeline from FCP using Export Quicktime Movie... as a self contained or non-self contained and bring it into DVDSP...

  • Whcih codec/settings for best quality, smallest file size?

    Hi,
    This is probably a really frequently asked question, and I apologise for that.
    I've been  searching for an answer and the only information I can hastily find is at last a year old, some stuff dating from 2008
    Forgive me - even though I'm studying media, I have no idea about codecs or the best ratio to use or anything.
    Basically, I need some advice over which settings to use on my video. The work needs to be a really high quality, as it will be displayed on a projection screen for an exhibition, but I'm sending it over the internet, so I need a compromise between file size and quality.
    One of my tutors has told me that I should always be using the ProRes 422 codec, but when I use that, and export the video in 1080p, it comes out at 3.5GB which is just ridiculous.
    It has to be sent off ASAP, as the exhibition is on the 21st.
    If anyone has any advice to me, that would be amazing.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi, thank you so much for your reply.
    It's a college project, and the person we were working with is a Doctor in sound. We had to record environmental sounds and create soundscapes for them. As media students though, we were told to make animations, or videos to accompany them. My video is just some of my photography, with some titles, and an AIF music file. Sound is his thing - he wouldn't know what settings I should use.
    The project is in 1080p 25 frame. I asked my one of my tutors, and he told me I was right in exporting it as ProRes 422. I used the Adobe Media Encoder and the youtube setting, which has taken a copy of the file down to 177.5MB and I'm burning a copy of the 3.5GB one on to disk in hopes I can get it there somehow.
    It's all a bit vague to be honest. My friend's project is 1080p. I'm pretty sure it's the standard size we use for all our projects. The projectors should be set up to handle it.

  • Trouble opening Flash MX 2004 files in CS3

    Has anyone encountered any problems trying to open orignal

    I tried opening your test file in my version of CS3 and it

  • Trouble opening a managed project file on a PC

    Hi all!
    So I have encountered a really weird problem that's been driving me bonkers lately. I'm working on a comedy web series and have been getting managed timelines from the editor to do some adjustments, grading and sound with. The first episode went fine but for some reason the next two aren't relinking properly.
    They have to video tracks, one for DSLR footage and then a track above that has footage from a Atmos Ninja Blade that they've synced up. The blade footage doesn't relink on these new project files. They come into the timeline with the grey bars on them denoting missing frames or some such, but the clips are in the bins and the footage is there. It's like all the ins and outs are getting disregarded.
    Now, oddly enough, this only happens on my PC (my main station). It does NOT happen on my macbook pro. Everything relinks fine there.
    Can anyone shed some light on what's going on? I need to work on my main station but if I can avoid having to go in and reset each clip of Blade footage, I would LOVE that.
    Thanks!

    follow-up: I have seen tips online about making sure to move the "media" part of the project as well as the project itself. It's strange though: there is no "media" here! I go to the movies folder, and there's the little project icon, and no associated "media". I understand the point: you need the project and all of its components in order to open and work on the project, but with iMovie 7, where does the "media" go when the project is saved?? I'm desperate here.

  • Export Settings for best quality, smaller file size?

    I have a one hour movie I made of a concert and exported it using Share --> Media Browser --> 720p.  It came out great quality but it's 4.4gb's.
    I need to figure out how to get that down to about 1GB while keeping 720p.  HD movies in iTunes are two plus hours and only 3gb's from what I've seen.  How can I use the same compression settings?  There has to be a way to compress it a little more, while staying in 720p right?
    What am I missing? TIA!

    Compression quality really depends on the type of video that you are trying to compress.  If the video is full of motion and noise, it will be very hard to reduce the file size through compression without massive loss.  Compression is a trade-off.  If you reduce the fame size to 480p, you may increase the quality of the video while reducing the file size versus trying to do the same thing at 720p.

  • Trouble Opening External .swf

    on(release){
    gotoAndStop("Architecture");
    myMC.loadMovie("ARCH_GALLERY.swf");
    Hi, I am making a website for myself and right now I am having trouble opening an external .swf file.
    I already made my external gallery that I am using (ARCH_GALLERY) and I am trying to allow it to open
    inside a movie clip which is on one of my pages. The code I posted above is on the button which accesses
    this movie clip to start my portfolio page (Architecture). When I test it or publish it the external will not play
    and I am not getting any error messages.
    I am new to flash so I may not be doing it correctly. Inside my movie clip page "Architecture" I have another
    movie clip as a placeholder for the external .swf (myMC). Then I put the code to open the external .swf on
    my button Architecture. Thank you in advance for your help.

    If that code is executing in a frame where that myMC does not exist, then it cannot work.  That movieclip needs to be present.  AS2 is not very generous with error messages.  If you have the chance to, start by learning AS3 instead of AS2... it is more generous with error messages and better to learn in the long run.
    If you are just learning Flash, break away from learning bad practices... stop putting code on objects.  Instead of that place your code in the timeline.  Give that button an instance name (ex: btn), and in the timeline trhat holds it place code like the following...
    btn.onRelease = function(){
       gotoAndStop("Architecture");
       myMC.loadMovie("ARCH_GALLERY.swf");

  • I've exported my pages graphics document as a PDF file and can't seem to reduce the file size without compromising the quality of the photo's used even after choosing "best" quality.  I'm trying to send the file via e-mail but it's too big.  ??????

    I am trying to e-mail a graphics pages document I made as a PDF file.  After trying to resize the file, the photo's quality is compromised (really blurry) even after choosing "Best" quality.  What am I doing wrong.  As a regular full sized file (PDF) it's fine, but when it gets reduced, it's bad and it needs to get printed from the e-mail copy I'm trying to send.  HELP! Please.

    If there are a lot and/or large images the file will inevitably be large, no matter what.
    You can reduce them down as far as possible by cropping and scaling them to the final size before creating the pdf. You can do this by opening the images in Preview .app and using Menu > Tools to reduce the resolution and to crop.
    If you have used transparency effects eg shadow, reflection, transparency, 3D charts, OSX will by default render these at 72dpi in the pdf.

  • Having Trouble Opening .EPS File

    I am trying to open a .eps file in Illustrator CS3. As it is trying to open the progress bar for Parsing EPS format appears. Once the bar reaches the end, an error message shows up saying  operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. Can anyone please tell me why this is happening? Even tried opening it up in Photoshop and paring error message appeared. I am using a PC on windows Vista. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Scott,
    I received the emailed file in zip. Tried opening it with illustrator and the same problem happened again. Any reason why it may still not be opening up? Do you recommend maybe reinstalling illustrator. This problem never happened before. Thanks

    Email servers often corrupt eps files. It's best to have the person zip the file before sending it.
