Trouble opening downloaded applications

Well the problem that I am having is that whenever I download an application and try to get it to open it doesn't work. I know that it has to do with the fact that the recommended application that it is supposed to open with has been changed to iTunes. Does anyone know what the recommended application to open downloaded file is? I can just change it back if I know which one it is.

I recently installed a new hard drive. I've been having the same problem, when i try and download an application it says that no default application has been set. Then when i go to applications and utilities I cannot find anything called "DiskMountImage".....do i need to download this from somewhere..? Before i replaced the hard drive it would work perfectly every time....
* When I click command + i on the .exe file I see "open with" and 'none' is selected...if i go to applications and then utilities folder the only things that i am able to click on are bluetooth, disk utility, java, printer setup, and system profiler....when i search for disk image mounter in the search bubble nothing comes up....what do i need to do..?
**I know .exe files are for windows, but my mac had no problem finding something to open it with before i replaced the hard drive....what was it?

  • Trouble opening downloaded apps

I'm having trouble opening newly downloaded apps on my macbook pro.  I can log into my account on here (obviously, seeing as I posted this) with the same password, but when I go to open my app, if I have shut down my computer between downloading and opening it, I get a window that says I bought the app on a different computer and need to verify use of it on my computer.  This is quite frustrating because I downloaded the app from this computer straight onto this computer - I don't own any other apple products for this to even be possible.  I know I'm not signed into any other computers because when I got this computer for school I created a new apple account and haven't used it anywhere but on this computer.  I try to type in my password, which I know works because I can sign into iTunes and clearly I signed onto here, yet when i type in the correct password, it tells me my password is incorrect and that I need to contact customer service. What is the problem here?

    Hi,
If the App Store is open click Store > Sign Out from the menu bar.
Now launch iTunes. From the menu bar (top of your screen) click Store > Authorize This Computer.
Once that's done, quit iTunes, launch the App Store. Try opening the apps.
If you still have problems, install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
It's ok to do this even though you are already running 10.6.8. The combo reinstalls the App Store for you and may help.
If that still didn't help, move the files in bold print you see here to the Trash:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist
    ~/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist
    /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/Network.interfaces.plist
Restart your Mac. Try opening the apps.
The first three set of files can be found in your Home folder. ~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder library.
The Network.interfaces.plist is in the root library.

  • Trouble Opening Downloaded Files

My wife has a Mac Book using OS X v10.4 (which is why I'm here) with a 1,83 GHz intel core duo. The problem is that she is unable to open downloaded files. The software updater has a long list of suggestions and after she downloads the files (the new java release 8) the installation process starts and hen abruptly quits. I tried to solve that problem by re-downloading release 7 but the same error occurred (the release 7.pkg file was not in the library but the 5 and 6 pkg files were).
And... she recently purchased Office 2008 for Mac and that won't load either. Coincidence? Or some related problems? She is already on her second hard drive and I am hoping that isn't the problem.
Help!! Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Escubed, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Trouble opening downloaded .doc and pdf files

I have suddenly been unable to open .doc word files or pdfs through Safari.  I download them and they move to the downloading arrow area, but when I click on them, word documents show this dialogue box:
    Safari can’t open the file.
Safari can’t open the file “GERMAN_QUIZ-2.doc” because no available application can open it.
PDFs open but the text is corrupted - pictures show ok but where text is, it just appears as a graduated solid black blurry line.
I haven't changed any settings or downloaded anything odd, as far as I am aware.
    Any ideas?

Thanks - I also removed an Adobe file and I can now open them.
I used this method to open the pdf's and if I choose Open With Adobe then it opens.  If I open with Preview then it's corrupted as below.   Photos come out but text looks like this.
Why has preview suddenly stopped opening these pdfs.  (It used to work).
    Thanks for your help

  • Trouble opening downloads

Many times when I download something to my desktop, I try to open it and I get a Quicktime error message that says "Error opening movie, the movie could not be opened." It even gave me this message after I paid for and bought the Quicktime pro download and tried to open it........Please help!

Many times when I download something to my desktop, I try to open it and I get a Quicktime error message that says "Error opening movie, the movie could not be opened."
This usually means that QT doesn't recognize/cannot parse the media content. Can be anything from a corrupted file to a custom encode which not playable. E.g., it is possibe to create a QT compatible video track and then add an AC3 audio track. If you don't have the AC3 component(s) installed, this file would not open. See if "Finder Info" gives you any clue to what compression format was used for the file(s) giving you problems here.
It even gave me this message after I paid for and bought the Quicktime pro download and tried to open it.
The purchase of a QT Pro allws the user to access editing functions and playback capabilities that are not available to users of the free QT Player alone. It does not add any new codecs or components to the application.

  • Trouble opening downloaded class files

    Hello,
I am trying to add a simple scroller to my website, however when I download the class files Dreamweaver automatically tries to open them and they are jibberish. What program do I use to open these files?
    Thanks

You should either use the classes as-is in your own program/applet according to the documentation, or you should be looking for the source (.java) files for those classes. Compiled classes can't be opened into something understandable by humans (unless you decompile them).

  • Unable to open downloaded applications - Indesign & Illustrator

Hi - I purchased a one year subscription for Indesign and Illustrator yesterday.   However, the entire suite downloaded after quite a few hours.  I am unable to open InDesign & Illustrator.   I keep getting an Adobe comment box saying something like - to renew your subscription with a link or the message try again in 15 minutes.   I had downloaded the updated Download Assistant.   This is very frustrating as I need to work on some files I had created previously when I took out a subscription a few months ago which expired due to an accounting issue.
    I would appreciate your assistance

  • Trouble opening downloaded installers - Adobe Flash & OpenDNS

Get this warning with no option to over-ride for a trusted site. Any way to change settings to allow updating my Flash Player?
Same message occurs with an OpenDNS installer? Have I altered something to cause this?

    Carolyn Samit wrote:
    Hi..
You can update Flash from System Preferences > Flash Player > Advanced > Check Now
Ha, that's what started the whole thing! I've got the pref set to never for checking for updates & do it manually, I like to keep as much control as I can!
I went through the process that same exact way you outline, just to be sure since I had downloaded it several times after deleting the first try by just going back to the get.adobe.com webpage & got the same result.
(Reminds me of Albert Einstein's quote: Insanity is doing the same thing over & over again & expecting different results.)

Follow these instructions for using  OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser redirects, blocks the flashback trojan, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
If you are using Safari, check Safari > Preferences > General
See if you have:   Open "safe" files after downloading   selected.
I had already changed the DNS server settings in my Time Capsule settings as you suggest, the problem arose when I downloaded an installer for the OpenDNS Updater.app (ironic, eh? actually I thought it was some type of Dashboard/Control Panel type app when I was going thru the registration process).
When I try to instal, it brings up the same Window as the jpg I posted originally, just change "Adobe..." to "OpenDNS..."
This seems like too much of a coincidence that 2 independent software distributors either forgot to or incorrectly signed a file for download, plus the forums here & on Adobe have no trace of anyone else encountering this problem!  So the finger seems to be pointing (rather accusingly) at ME, something I did to the settings on my machine, sob, sob..
Oh, tried with Open "safe" files after downloading both unchecked and checked, but did not restart Safari after checking the box.

Use Tony's suggestion. I am running it right now and it is awesome. I love Mozilla but they basically screwed all of those older Macs over. Come on Mozilla. These Macs still work, and there are plenty of people with them out there.

What application are you choosing to open the files with?
Because of how integrated it is with windows IE should work. If it's not working, something more widespread could be wrong with your computer that would also prevent other browsers from working properly. Of course we'd love you to stick with Firefox, but you should get help with IE, too.
