Trouble opening files on DVD of Old Movies. Help!

Had a Service transfer many reels of old family movies (in no particular order) onto DVD discs. Goal is to edit out clips I don't want, move clips around, add music, etc. to create a family story.
I transferred files from both DVD's into Movies folder. Was able to get Disc A files to show up in lower window of iMovie but wouldn't drag into top "palette" of windows. Doubled clicked on file but got "video not found" message. Files wouldn't play in any other app. either. Eventually was able to open DVD Player and play Disc A.
Disc B wouldn't import into iMovie and didn't play first few tries in DVD Player (software wasn't highlighted). I'm not sure how I finally got it to play in DVD player because I was trying so many different things.
Questions:
How do I get both disc files into iMovie and able to be manipulated?
Should I use iMovie or iDVD? What's the difference between them?
Did transfer service create files that aren't usable in iMovie/iDVD?
Files on DVD are shown as both Adobe and Unix files. There are 5 or 6 files listed on each DVD. Do these file comprise a "total" one DVD movie? Or are there several movies on each disc but I can only play one?
Help! This is to be a Christmas present. Need to hurry.
Thanks!

You need to convert the VOB files on the DVDs back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Having trouble opening files in CS4

I am having a color management nightmare and that has lead to my trouble opening files, so I'll explain that color management part first.
I use Xrite Eye One Display Two as a calibration system and have recently bought a new Hewlet Packard 25 inch LCD monitor. Anyway, I am not seeing the same color outside of photoshop CS4 ext. that I see in photoshop CS4 ext. When I post a picture to the web, the color changes. I did read a post about this a few threads down, but my problem goes one step further. I changed some settings in the Save for Web section of photoshop and now I can't even open files from Bridge or directly from inside photoshop. Can anyone help me get back to just having problems with color? lol
I am quite the novice when it comes to certain things in adobe photoshop CS4, so thanks for any help or advice you could give me.

Gotta love the way HP throws out that "72% Color Gamut" spec (e.g., on this page) without actually saying what color profile or standard it's the gamut of.
Color management is not something that can be easily explained in a paragraph.  Since you're calibrating your monitor it is kind of important for you to understand what it's all about - and such understanding is possible with just a little effort and reading time.  There are a lot of color management overviews online that can be turned up with a Google search.
No file showing up without any error message seems kind of weird.  Are you using Windowed view or Tabbed view?  I ask because I'm wondering if somehow the document is opening up off-screen.  Do the entries in the Filter menu become active after such an open?
Does a document show up if you switch the Open Documents as Tabs setting in Edit - Preferences - Interface?
Have you installed any plug-ins that are supposed to provide access to any file types not available normally in Photoshop?

  • Having trouble opening files

Can somone help me having trouble opening files with my Ipad

I started having the exact same problem yesterday. It has happened to me a little less than 2 years ago on this same machine (which was very new at the time). I was hoping to come here and find an easier solution than I resorted to in the past. Before I had to completely reformat my computer to get it to work properly again.
For me, the first time this problem happened was when I was working on a job that is stored on our company server. The server went down while the file was open and I was kicked off and everything locked up. When I tried to get out of the file nothing happened and I had to force quit. When it got back up, I logged back onto the server and everything seemed fine until trying to open, save as or place a file. Then I see what you see, open a folder and rather than going inside the folder, I get the turn down arrow or I just see the same list of folders and cannot get into the final folder where the art resides that I wish to place (or attach in an email, etc.)
I don't know how it happened yesterday. It could have actually happened on Friday night. Our company runs 3 shifts and it may have happened on 2nd shift Friday night or on 3rd shift Sunday night / Monday morning. I discovered it yesterday afternoon.
If anyone has a better solution than reformatting, that would be GREAT! I have done the disk utility checking and fixing permissions and that didn't work the first time or today either. Thanks for any info!

  • Trouble opening files in Elements

I can access my Elements program, but I am having trouble opening files...I've tried opening several files (JPG, PSD, etc) and nothing appears in the actual program. Any advice?

I am using Version 12. I've tried both ways: Opened the file first in Photo Viewer, then Open > Elements...and Opened Elements first, then File > Open > Browse File. I just updated the version to 12.1, but it's still not working. Should I install and reinstall the program?

  • Trouble opening files on networked storage

In our small office we are using a Buffalo Linkstation networked hard drive to store and share files between Macs and PCs. One of our Macs in particular has trouble opening files. Either:
    1. The file is invisible
    2. The file doesn't open in the correct application by default (for instance, an InDesign file opening in textedit)
    3. Only files created on this mac, and not on another, will open, though the files created on other macs are visible and have the same extension (but grey and without the usual icon).
Oddly, when I copy the file onto a USB stick and 'manually' bring it over, it will open fine.
The Mac in question is a Mac Mini (Power PC) running OSX 10.4.8. Other Computers on the network, which don't have the same trouble opening files are:
Mac Mini (Intel) with OSX 10.4.8 and Windows XP via Bootcamp
Power Mac G5 with OSX 19.3.9
    iBook with OSX 10.4.
Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop with Windows XP
It seems like a software problem, but the Intel Mac is running the same version of OSX. The troubled Mac seems to drop its connection to the Linkstation much more often than the other computers as well, suggesting possibly a hardware problem?
iBook, PowerPC G5, Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Could this be an issue with file names?
I've used a linkstation with macs and had huge problems copying files TO the NAS because of bad file names or file names containing illegal characters for the linkstations formatting (Fat32 or whatever).
Make sure that you have files with names up to 32 chars and not more
    Make sure you exlcude characters like " [ ] / \ = + : ; " , * |" from your filename
Include a file extension (.indd for an indesign file for example) for all files.
By changing file names and adding extensions as required I have been able to store and recover files from the linkstation.
Try a test file or two. If they work, it could be that that is the problem.

  • I'm having trouble opening files back-saved to Illustrator 3

    Can anyone help?
I work for a commercial printer and we regularly have to supply files to our suppliers so they can make dies for pattern cut items. The normal process for us is to create an imposed PDF straight out of our workflow and supply that, but sometimes, if the pattern is intricate for instance, our supplier will ask for an eps file back-saved to old Illustrator version 3. I think is because their CAD machinery and software is rather old.
Historically this has never caused any problems but I'm now finding that the V3 files won't re-open after their initial save, either on my own Mac or at our supplier. I get this error message
and then Illustrator just opens a blank document.
My colleague, using an Identical Mac and the same version of Illustrator (CC 2014) has no problems. We've gone through all the settings and preferences and can find no differences between mine and his.
    Any thoughts?

    Rich,
You may try to find out whether there is any difference in your settings, or look at the list below.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Having trouble opening files & folders through file open .

We have three Macs, 1 new Mac Pro w/ 2 hard drives (OS 10.5) and 2 G4's (OS 10.4), we use the Mac Pro to store all the customers files and the other two Macs work off the Mac Pro through our company network. The one G4 has no problem but the other G4 has problems opening files/folder through file-open in programs. If you go to file open and open a folder instead of opening up it toggles down into a list so you can never get to the file you want to open or save a file in the correct folder. Please help!

  • Trouble opening files

I have Adobe CS3. I've had it for two months, and just yesterday, it started freezing should I attempt to open files with the program. Should I right-click on an appropriate file and open it that way, it opens fine. I have attempted reinstalling photoshop, but that has not fixed this.
The same day, I ran an anti-root kit program and removed several things. CS3 continued to work fine for a while afterwards, but then closed itself on me, and since then I've had the problem stated above.
    Any suggestions?

next time it "freezes" when you use file> open hit ESC. then try again.

  • PC user cannot open file off DVD

Hi chaps, maybe a little off topic but I have sent a PC user a file (4Gb) on a DVD burnt with 'Toast' and they say they cannot open it on any of their machines, they say they are getting something like 'autorun' - I'm not able to visit their premises so I cannot check this out - does anyone have any suggestions, this is getting seriously boring (I zipped it and popped it onto 'Dropbox' and they are having trouble with that as well) ! - thanks for taking the time ... Roger

How many bytes is the file? A file that is 4Gb is size is a little suspicious. It could very well be a larger file that was truncated to 4Gb because of a limitation of the underlying filesystem. For example, a data DVD has a maximum file size of 4,294,967,295 bytes. The DVD can hold more information, but that's the largest a single file can be. Windows FAT32 filesystems have a similar limitation. If your file is 4,294,967,295 bytes, then the file was probably bigger and the end of the file was cut off (or, in some cases, may even be written over the beginning of the file).
I bet that you can't open the file either (not the copy on your computer, but the copy burned to DVD).
As for "AUTORUN", that's a Windows thing and shouldn't apply. Unless you had Toast include something else on the DVD to install software of some sort, it shouldn't matter. However, I would avoid using Toast for making simple data DVDs. Using the Finder to burn DVDs isn't only simpler, but much more reliable.

  • Trouble opening files from LR3 to CS4, desaturation occurring.

I upgraded from LR2 to 3 a while ago, and recently, I've had an odd problem opening my lightly edited files into CS4.  I just do command E on my mac, and they open right into CS4.  When the image(s) open, they almost seem completely desaturated?  I shoot a nikon D700, raw, copy the NEF files into LR3 upon import, do light edits in LR (white balance, recovery, tone curve, some adjustment brush...) and then will open selected files into CS4 for futher tweaking.  Any idea why these images are doing this?  If I go back into lightroom and "reset all settings" and then open, the images open fine.  Help, i'm about to pull my hair out!!!
Here is a screen shot showing the image in LR (left) and then how it opens in CS4.
Thank you in advance for your help!  I'm currently running version 3.6 of lightroom and 11.0.2 of CS4

    Nope I am in sRGB.....
It has been very confusing because I can get an image to open normally in CS4 by resetting ALL the settings.... i wrote down the settings, re-set, made sure it opened with the correct color rendition/not desaturated (for lack of a better term.....), and then went through and "re-created" the image step by step, starting with white balance and on down, and opening it in CS4 every step, to see what was making the color render that way in CS4.  I think I have narrowed it down to the Nikon V4 camera profiles... because if I set my camera profile to "d2x mode1 v2" it opens normally (with all of my other lightroom edits made...) but if i simply switch to "d2x mode 1 v4" it will desaturate upon opening in cs4.
I've also had troubles like this from time to time in the past, and thought it had something to do with the adjustment brush.
Has anyone encountered this problem before??  Is it a compatibility issue with CS4 being an older version of photoshop?

  • I am having trouble opening files saved in CS 5.5 Indesign after spending time on the cloud. Help me please

The last year(2013-2014) of school used CS5.5( I won and is on home computer) at home along with the cloud. School was using CS 6.I learned to save all files at home and at school in CS 4 or better. Saved files in each format so I could work on each project at home or at school. In Oct. had to cancel cloud. Now when I try to open the last years files It tells me to ck membership or open in arobate(PDF). Have spent hours on the phone and all they can tell me is to contact the forums. Hours and hours of work I have no access to.
Anything new I wish to start is ok but anything I had worked on in InDesign for my portfolio is  accessible
I am considering removing my CS5.5 and trying to re load it. Any one know if that will help and what could I be loosing if I do that?
I have spent hours on the phone with no help from Adobe.
I just want to know how I can open my files to I can re save them in the CS 5.5 format . All of my portfolio, resume and other InDesign things are not available.

I'm having the same issue. And Dreamweaver now crashes after just a few seconds.

  • Trouble opening files in pse6 for mac?

Whenever I try to open anything in Photoshop Elements 6 on Mac OSX 10.5.8, I get an error message stating "This is not a valid Portable Document File (PDF) document. It cannot be opened." This even happens when I just go to open the program without opening anything first! I have already trashed the preferences twice, and searched Google for over an hour, but nothing has helped. If someone else out there knows how to fix this or has had this problem, can you please help me out? Thanks so much!

Open the pdf document in Preview - not Elements.  Preview is more "accommodating" towards damaged documents.
Then use the Save As command, and re-save the document as a pdf document.
Save it under a slightly different name.  Don't overwrite the original document.
Also use the Save As command and save the document as a jpeg.  I presume that you are dealing with a picture.
Once you've done this re-saving, go back to Elements and try again to open these two new documents.  You shouldn't have any problem this time.  Preview should have corrected any damage.
Until you wrote your question, it never occurred to me that Elements could open a pdf.  But when I went to Elements, it had absolutely no problem opening a pdf.

  • Trouble opening files via links on PDF

    Hello,
I am working with a pdf that is a one page table of contents for a law treatise.  Each table of contents has multiple bookmarks/tabs within the page.  Clicking a tab title is supposed to open a more in-depth document (also in pdf form).  However, when I click on the tabs I get the following message:  "Could not open the file '19_1.pdf'" (where 19_1 is the file name and relates to the chapter and tab).
The pdf originally comes from a treatise website, and I feel like the Adobe is looking for the file locally on my Macbook and not attempting to look on the internet for the file.  I have received the more in-depth pdf from a friend and saved it on my desktop.  When I click on the corresponding tab in the table of contents the table of contents link works correctly. There are many more table of contents and pdfs I need to read over the course of the semester (it is basically our textbook).
Does anyone know what might be the problem?  I can clarify anything that does not make sense.
    Thank you.
    SMH

I can navigate to the files using finder, I can even open the files in other applications (non-Adobe) so everything appears to work properly except for opening the files using the Adobe Photoshop CC. I had also read about the problem with SMB vs. SMB2 and even Mac's new SMBx but this issues doesn't feel as though it will be resolved by changing the file transfer protocol considering the transfer is working properly for non Adobe applications.

  • Cannot open file because its not a movie file?

I have a file that was ingested using FCP and has been edited using FCP. I moved the file from the default place to a couple of different places for organizational purposes. After being absent for a couple of weeks, the video now cannot play. I try to reconnect in FCP and it is an unrecognized file. I try to open it in QT on multiple machines and QT cannot open it.
Not sure what to do next. Ideas?

Sorry. I thought I had mentioned that in the OP, however after looking I see that I didn't. The files were recorded from my camcorder. Its a consumer Canon HD camcorder. Pretty standard. I have used and ingested loads of video from this camera before.
    Thanks
