Trouble opening mpeg movie files and importing into iMovie 08

Hi, I'd be most grateful if anyone could provide any solutions to the following problem...
A friend has emailed me two .mpeg movie files which are parts 1&2 of a home movie which I want to edit in iMovie and burn to DVD. The footage was shot on a miniHDV camcorder (not sure which brand).
Opening in QT 7.6 gives the following warning dialogue: "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
The files will however play fine in VLC Media Player, but not in mpeg Streamclip (the file appears to play but the viewer is blank with no audio/video). Trying to import into iMovie is unsuccessful. The iMovie browser won't let me choose the files or drag/drop.
Any ideas. I read somewhere that iMovie 08 can't import mpeg-1 files. Do I need to convert the files, and if so how?
Thanks in advance, and apologies - this is my first experience of video editing.

I have QT Player but it hasn't "kicked in" when I try to import my videos.
Something called PIXE VRF Browser is supposed to help in the conversion. The QT MPEG-2 thingy won't install until I buy QT Pro, according to what I get on the screen.
Sounds like you have too many applications trying to do the same thing. Either use the Pixela Pixe VRF Browser or use the Mac applications (Mac OS Finder, Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback Component w/MPEG Streamclip) but not both to do the same job. The Apple Finder should be able to copy multiplexed VOB/MPEG-2 files from either your PC burned DVD or directly from your camcorder DVD to your MAC hard drive where MPEG Streamclip/QT MPEG-2 component can convert them for use in iMovie '08. Frankly, I don't understand your work work flow or why you want to import your files to a GOP editor in the first place if your goal is to do frame level editing in iMovie '08.
As for Jon's suggestion, I am on dial-up and cannot download big files at 3-4 Kbps snail pace.
What does this have to do with importing your camcorder files to your PC and re-burning them to DVD for use on your Mac? If I were to make a recommendation here, it would have been to use an external hard drive here rather than DVDs for transporting files between platforms and then only if you want the files available to both. If your goal is only to edit them in iMovie '08 or iMovie HD on your Mac, then why not cut out the "middleman" platform?
I wish I could purchase these updates on DVDs but the genies couldn't even tell me if there's such a service.
Totally confused here. Are you saying your DVR-D300 files were commercial produced or that you are dealing with torrent downloads of copy-written material? These are two separate issues with facets beyond the scope of this forum.
As for "platform", I have iMovie08. iMac does not read the mini RAM disks when I connect the camera to a USB port.
Are you saying the Finder doesn't read them or that iMovie '08 doesn't read them? Do you "finalize" your DVDs before trying to read them via USB as the manual states may be necessary as indicated on page 150 of your manual?
How can I find out that iMovie09 will let me import and edit my Panasonic videos?
You could try going to the Apple site and checking the the tapeless camcorder compatibility chart. The Panasonic DVR-D300 is specifically listed along with a hot link for additional information. However, this still won't help you you don't finalize the content.

  • Converting files to import into iMovie HD

I've been searching the forum but cant find anything that helps me...
    I have an mpeg (a .m2p file)
I've tried converting it into all sorts of things to import into iMovie, using the likes of "ffmpegx" and "mpeg streamclip".
    I've tried converting to mpeg4 mov files, mpeg4 mp4 files, H264, .DV.
Most of the time even quicktime will not play them, or in the case of the .DV files, not only is it massive (like 50 gig) but takes hours to import.
Basically I have a 2gig .m2p (mpeg2) file and want to convert it into something that iMovie will read without taking 6 hours.
I'm new to OS X, and video editing/converting in general... someone please point me in the right direction.

    .m2p file
Have you tried this with MPEG Streamclip (Notice that MPEG2 conversions require the $20 Apple MPEG-2 Playback Component):
"File/Export to DV.../Compression: DV (DV25)". Choose "Split DV stream in Segments" if the content is more than 9 minutes 27 seconds because iMovie 1-4 can't reliably handle longer clip files and it might be a good idea to limit the converted .dv file's size anyway (segmented clips play seamlessly in iMovie).
You can save the converted DV directly into iMovie project's Media folder to save time and HD space (iMovie prompts you what to do with the clip when the project is opened. Notice that iMovie HD 5 now stores its project folder as a package -- MPEG Streamclip can save straight into the package's /Media folder!)

  • Can not locate iPhoto 9.6 (910.29) files to import into iMovie (10.0.6) on Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Hello,
I am trying to import some photos and movies into iMovie (10.0.6) from iPhoto 9.6 (910.29) but I can't do it. I've searched for solutions but can't figure it out. I can't locate my iPhoto files and it's driving me bonkers! It's probably a very simple solution.
When I use iPhoto I can access all my photos and movies. When I search through Finder I'm unable to locate the files. When I use the "reveal in finder" function in iPhoto it shows the files are only in "iPhoto library" and provides the full file path. When I try to follow the file path and go to Pictures > iPhoto library and click on this it opens iPhoto instead of allowing me to go to the files as in previous versions of OSX.
I can't get to the files through finder, and i can not import them into iMovie (as am trying to follow the same file path).
    Any solutions would be appreciated!
    Thank you.

Either export the photos and movies from iPhoto to a folder on your Desktop and import to iMovie from there,
or use the Media Browser in iMovie:
The "Libraries" panel will show you the iPhoto Library in the sidebar. Import your photos and videos from there. If the "Libraries" sidebar is missing press the keys ⇧⌘1  (Windows > Show Libraries) to reveal it.

  • Why do some AVI files not import into iMovie?

Some of my AVI video does not import into iMovie. When I try, it gives me a non-specific error message. Is there a way I can import it? Other AVI files import with no problem.

AVI is a container, not a format; the audio and video in an AVI may use any codec, and some codecs can't be used in Mac OS X. Installing Perian may help.

  • QuickTime takes forever to open larger movie files and files over network

Quicktime 7.2 used to open files immediately, but now it stops responding for a couple minutes or more before finally opening movie files.
Any one else having this problem?

Worked for me as well. I had Perian already, but after downloading and installing the new version, Quicktime works perfectly now.

  • I have uploaded files in the cloud but they do not seem to open. (Movie files and other content)

I uploaded content to the cloud without any problems or issues. (GREAT NEWS!) However the content appears as a gray box and does not open or do anything when you click on it. Can you help me? It looks like it uploaded completely but I am not sure how to access it or get it to open.
    Thanks!

    Hi David,
Thanks for responding! Yes they are files I created in Articulate and
MSWMM- Microsoft Movie files. I still have both but was basically thinking
when I sent the link they could log in and see the file. It looks like they
would actually have to download it to open and view the materials. Is that
correct? Is there some other way to share the content?
    Thanks again!

  • Mpeg movies won't drop into imovie 4 or idvd

When I try to drop a movie clip from my sony camera that has been imported onto my powerbook into imovie 4 or idvd it says it "can't open file. It opens and plays in quick time, it drops into a friends imovie 4 on his powerbook, but not on mine.

  • My MPEG1 movies won't import into iMovie

I have two cameras. My Canon saves the movies in .AVI format and is able to import and be edited in iMovie. However, my new Sony H9 camera saves them in MPEG1 Muxed (have no idea what that means but inspector said it was that format). I can't open that one in iMovie. HELP!!! Anyone know how to get around it in anyway (either saving the movie in a different format on the camera or while it downloads from the camera onto the computer, or how to get iMovie to import them)?

I also have a sony camera and cannot use imovie unless I purchase something else to change file formats! Why would imovie not allow mpegs to be brought in? Maybe they could come up with a software update that would allow us to use their program with mpegs! I am very disappointed that I cannot use imovie unless I purchase another program.

  • .mov files from iPhoto into iMovie... How?

I have some video files (.mov) that I'd like to keep in iPhoto and also sync into my iPhone, but I'm not quite sure what the sequence should be.
I can get the .mov files into iPhoto, no problem, but can't figure out how to sync them into my iPhone.  I have "Sync videos" checked off in iTunes, but they stil w'ont transfer into iPhone.
How should I be doing this?

AFAIK there is no way to share movies from iPhoto.

  • I can't get video to loop exporting an OAM file and importing into Muse. Seems to ignore all triggers.

I've tried everything I can think of, but triggers are ignored. I've tested in Safari and Firefox so far. Tested in Muse Preview. Tested in An. Nothing is paying attention to the trigger I have set up.
I've used a label to get it to loop back to the beginning. I've used zero to get it to loop back. I've searched the web, YouTube, and here looking for answer none will fix this. No errors in the error box BTW. Been back to Lynda.com re-re-viewing videos. All seems fine, but it isn't.
Website is here: http://www.moviesandfx.com. The animation on the home page is what I want to loop. It plays okay in Safari, has mixed results in Firefox. Not sure yet about IE, I'm on a Mac.
I'd love to hear ideas to fix this. The workflow is An—>OAM export—>Muse "place"—>Muse publish to ftp.
    Thank you,
    Dan

I'm having the same problem. I inserted the oam in Dreamweaver, where it loops forever in split and live view. As soon as I view it in a browser (Safari and Chrome), the looping is disabled. There are no console errors.

  • Converting powerpoint / wmv files for import into iMovie

I have some students [on PC] who have created some slideshows in powerpoint. I am working on a G4 PowerBook, and use iMovie HD, but am having problems converting wmv and quicktimes [using flip4mac] and then importing them into FCP or iMovie.
Can anyone tell me the best settings to use to effect this process - I have tried mpeg4 basic and advanced as well as H264 but the end result is either really pixellated or won't import at all.
    Many thanks

  • How to export projects from imovieHD and import into imovie 09

Hi- I need to export my projects with timeline, audio, transitions (everything) in such a way that they will open in in imovie 09, and allow me to continue working on these projects without having to rebuild titles, transitions etc..
Is this possible in ANY way at all?

    Hi
No - this function doesn't exist AT ALL.
Not even if You got FinalCut Express or Pro - This doesn't work.
Advice. Keep project on one platform from start to finish.
    • Never up-date anything during process - Pro way of working.
Only Export function - does only move raw unedited material at it's best.
If going to FinalCut from iMovie HD 6 or prev one can copy back to Camera and use
this as a base (track 1) and re-build movier ontop of this. But still not easy.

  • Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?

Is an 8.7GB file too big to import into iMovie 9?  I am using iMovie 8.0.6 on a Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8 on 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB Memory.  I can't get my movie file to import into iMovie...any advice would be much appreciated!

When you import into iMovie, your video is converted into DV format. This uses 13 GB per hour of video. So the first thing you have to do is make sure you have 26 GB free on your hard drive, plus another 10GB free for OSX to perform, plus 10GB free if you plan on burning a DVD.
iMovie has non-destructive editing. If you have used any part of a clip and discard the rest, that entire clip is still saved in your project - unused but eating up disc space. If you use no part of a clip and discard the clip, then the clip can go in the trash and you get back disc space. So...
If you import 2 hours of video (26GB) as one clip, and only use 2 minutes, your 2-minute segment retains its 2-hr source in memory. 2 min = 26 GB.
One thing you can do is set the iMovie preferences to automatically create new clips every 3 minutes. (2 hours of 3-min clips = 40 clips.) This allows you to find the 2-minute segment you want and delete all of the unused clips. Say your 2-minute segment comes from 2 of these 3-min clips, so you keep 6 minutes of source footage and delete the rest. Clips that are entirely unused will be completely deleted and give you back disc space. At .65 GB per clip, your 6-minute project is now only 1.3 GB, and you've just regained 24.7 GB of disc space.

  • Movie files suddenly don't import into iMovie

I have been importing dozens of MVI_   .MOV files shot on a Canon 60D and store on my iMac into iMovie no problem. Now after two months when I choose import movie and select the same  files a box comes up saying the file (approx1 GB files)  is processing and it will take less than a minute but the box disappears after 10 secs or so and no file is imported into iMovie. How can I fix this problem that has developed. I've tried with several different files and restarted iMac.
