Trouble organizing photos when they download in iphoto

I want to control the picture organization when I download from my camera so that different events don't group into one topic. and now I have tons of photos that are not easy to group. i feel like every time I move them I wind up with a duplicate copy. my hard drive is bursting.

I am not sure how to rename the actual pictures and sort them they way I want them sorted.
You can add Titles to Pics using the Info Pane (Click on the ‘i’ lower left. The Name, Date and Description fields can be edited). To change the title of groups of pics use the Photos -> Batch Change command.
So, how do you want them sorted?
The most basic way is to create an Album (File -> New Album) and drag the pics to it. You can put Albums into Folders (File -> New Folder). So, you can have a Folder called, say, ‘Travel’ and within it Albums for your Trip to Paris and your Trip to Rome.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.
but iphoto does not allow me to be selective on what photos come in. its all or none and all named to the same description.
When iPhoto sees a card it shows you the contents of the card. Select the pics you want to import (Click on them, Command-click for multiple) add your description and Click on Import Selected.

  • Where exactly are my photos when they are in iPhoto?

I have been using Mac since 1986 and this Photo/iPhoto/Aperture thing is driving me nuts! Where are my Photos? How can I positively save my Photos?

In your User folder there is a Pictures folder, in that folder is your iPhoto Library. It will most likely be named, "{Your Username}'s iPhoto Library." The iPhoto Library appears as a file, but it is actually a package that contains folders and files that contain all of your photos plus data that keeps track of all the info related to the photos (reference léonie's comments).
The easiest way to backup your photos is to just make a copy of your iPhoto Library to an external drive. That way everything about your photos will be backed up.
If you backup your entire partition on a regular basis, something you should consider if you're not currently doing it, your iPhoto Library would be part of that backup.

When they un-upgrade iPhoto email templates? Along with Apple Maps, another software I won't use anymore.

You can go back by restoreing your backup of the iPhoto library from the previous version a installing the previous version for its original source
Of course I use iPhoto - and I have not idea what
Do you use iPhoto? What version are you using and have you sent photos using it from the iPhoto and used the older templates?
    means
one last time if you want help you have to start by being percise and shaing information - for example "older version" is of no help since there are 40 or 50 older versions
    again
Sorry but if you have a question then you need to provide information  - what are you talking about? What version of iPhoto and what OS version do you have? What upgrade are you talking about? what e-mail client are you using?

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

  • I blocked something for pictures on Facebook and now can't see anyones pictures when they download them, how do I get them back ?

I didn't want to see some postings, so I was told to block the pictures on the postings.....after I did that, we now cannot see anyones pictures when they download them on to facebook... it only affects us when on our desk computer not our ipod.

If images are missing then check that you aren't blocking images from some domains.
*Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
*Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
*Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions" (search fbcdn.net)
You can use these steps to check if images are blocked:
    * Open the web page that has the images missing in a browser tab.
    * Click the website favicon ([[Site Identity Button]]) on the left end of the location bar.
    * Click the "More Information" button to open the "Page Info" window with the Security tab selected (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
    * Go to the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Tools > Page Info" window.
    * Select the first image link and scroll down through the list with the Down arrow key.
    * If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?

Why would I want to change JPEG quality of photos when exporting them from iPhoto?  Changing the quality of the print changes the size of the saved file and thus impacts the speed at which it is moved on the internet.  But other than size of the file, what is the advantage of changing the quality?

I have no idea why you would want to do anything
Some people want lower quality to reduce file size for different reasons
It is an option - if you do pot want to do that do not use that option

Sounds more like a problem with your Display Resolution than iPhoto.
Go to: Apple / System Preferences / Displays and in the Resolutions list select,
    1280 x 800 if you have a 13" MacBook Pro
    1400 x 900 if you have a 15" MacBook Pro
    1920 x 1200 if you have a 17" Macbook Pro

Try upgrading your Mac to the newest version of OS X Mavericks, and try upgrading your iPhone and iPad to the newest version of iOS 7.
OS X Mavericks may not be in the Mac App Store by now, but you can find the newest version of Mavericks here at download.com: http://download.cnet.com/Apple-Mac-OS-X-Mavericks/3000-18513_4-76018588.html. Note: Download.com it a safe website to download free software.

  • I lost all my photos when I upgraded from Iphoto to Photos

I lost all my photos when I upgrade from Iphoto to photos, can I get back? please help

You need to provide more details about what happened.  But, here is something you can check.
When you run Photo and it converts your library, it doesn't delete the iPhoto library.  Look in your Pictures folder - you should see two libraries:
iPhoto Library.migratedphotolibrary (this is the original iPhoto library)
Photos Library.photoslibrary (this is the new Photos library)
You should still be able to open the original iPhoto library.  The iPhoto application was not deleted from your computer.  (It was probably removed from your Dock if you had an icon there.)  Look in the Applications folder, find iPhoto, and run it.  It should show your original library with all your original images.
It is always a good idea to back up your photos (and the iPhoto library) before trying these migrations.  Problems do occur...
    Hope this helps.

  • Has anyone had trouble with photo albums after downloading a newer version of iPhoto?

Has anyone had trouble with photo albums and viewing photos after downloading a newer version of iPhoto?

I downloaded mountain lion and then iPhoto '11 in order to tap into iCloud capabilities with all of my devices. (My Mac was outdated in regards to operating platform to do this). After installing iPhoto 11, I had to repair and rebuild my library of photos.  However, after doing this, all of my albums were jumbled and, while I can see the image thumbnail, when I click on the thumbnail, and error that looks like a black triangle and gray exclamation pops up as opposed to the larger hi def image I want to view.

  • How do i get my nikon 3000 to download photos when i connect to iphoto

When I plug in my nikon 3000, nothing happens. How do I get the photos from the camera into iphoto

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    Restart iPhoto and try again.

  • Organizing photos once they're syncing in a Facebook or Flikr album

I have two albums syncing from my iPhoto to the internet: one on facebook, and one on Flikr. Whenever I add new photos to these albums, all of the photos jumble themselves up. Is there anyway to batch organize them by date or something?
Also, now my facebook album has gone completely round the bend and is putting photos in that I did not put in, but it's only showing them when I scroll, so I can't actually click on them and remove them.
I try to go in through facebook and delete them, but they're not actually there...so my problem doesn't seem to really be a problem so much as an in convenience.

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Need help organizing photos when I transfer from PC

I am copying pictures from my PC into iPhoto, and I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to save them when I have a folder within a folder.  In other words, if I have a genealogy folder on my PC and then within that folder I have it broken down into family last names, and then it will be further broken down into pictures, wills, etc.  Would it be worth it to put this type of information under a new event?  I haven't had a hard time with the other pictures.  I just set up a new folder in iPhoto with the year, and then drag my folders of pictures into it.  Thank you for any help!

That is not how events work. They are just buckets of photos    For that type of organization you use albums and folders

  • Why does my screen saver say "no photos" when they are definately there?

I just downloaded the latest OS update and my screen saver no longer works.  When i go into system preferences and set up the folder to use for the picture slide show--it gives me an error that there are "no photos". But I have triple-checked and the photos are in fact there.  Why doesnt screen saver see them??

UPDATE:  I spoke with Apple and there is NO fix.  I've set up my photos in a hierarchy as follows
    Pictures FolderSlide Show Pictures Folder
    Sub folder jpegs
    Sub folder with jpegs
    sub-folder with jpegs
Everytime i have a new batch of photos worthy of the slide show--i add a new sub-folder.  This worked perfectly fine with the old OS but does not work with Mountain Lion.  According to the Apple support tech i spoke with, Mountain Lion does not support going into that level of sub-folder.  Essentially it is seeing the "Slide Show Pictures folder" but all it sees are the next level of sub-fodlers themselves--it cant go into the next level to see the actual photos.  Sounds pretty stupid if you ask me

  • Organizing photos in aperture 4 vs iPhoto 09

Ok editing and all aside, for the sake of organizing is aperture better than iPhoto 09? I know it is expensive and iPhoto is free but I'd just like to know if it organizes or has more options for organizing than iPhoto, is the interface better? Thanks guys.

for the sake of organizing is aperture better than iPhoto 09?
Organising where? In the Application or in the Finder?
Averaged out of the cost of iLIfe, iPhoto is a $16 app. Aperture is somewhat more expensive. Of course it has extra options in just about every area of the workflow.
So what's "better"? Do you need the extra features?
One way to look at it:
Are you a home photographer? Shoot the kids birthday party holidays and vacations? shooting jpegs on a point and shoot or a DSLR on Auto setting? iPhoto is probably what you're looking for.
A pro? A serious hobbyist? Shooting Raw or high volumes of jpeg? Sounds more like someone who'll get value from Aperture to me.
But the best thing: download the trial and see.
