Trouble pasting PICT graphic into Illustrator

I used to be able to copy and paste a PICT graphic from Data Desk into Illustrator (version 10) and edit it. However, in version 14 (CS4) it appears as a bitmap image that I cannot edit. I am not sure whether this is related to my recent upgrade to MacOS 10.6 from 10.5 or not. Is there a way to transfer PICT graphics via the clipboard into Illustrator in a way that they can be editted?

Thanks to both Russell and Wade! I "printed" the results to a pdf file, then placed the file in Illustrator and converted it from a linked to an embedded object, and now I can edit it. More steps than simply copying/pasting, but at least still possible.

Can no longer copy and paste from browser into illustrator - get placeholder that says "QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture"

We upgraded our iMacs to Yosemite and lost functionality on Illustrator CS4. We can save a picture to the desktop and then drag or 'place' the image to the Illustrator document, but if we drag directly from the browser or cut/copy/paste, we get a placeholder stating 'QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture'. .png, .psd, and .tiff files give a missing plugin error.

Illustrator CS4 and Yosemite aren't fully compatible. Some folks might have succeeded in getting it to run, but most have not.

Photoshop into Illustrator

Hi all,
I have saved an image as a EPS file from Photoshop CS3, I open Illustrator with my background image I have made. I then load up the EPS file in Illustrator CS3 go to Edit>Copy. But when I paste it over the the background image I get the image and the artbaord.
So how do I just paste the image into Illustrator without any artboards?

It's not a good idea to open raster images using Illustrator. beter to link. If the image has layers in Photoshop, save as PDF. If not, then save as TIF. In a new Illustrator file, go to File > Place and place the file that way. You probably would be better off linking to the PSD or TIF in Illustrator instead of embedding, so turn on Link in the Place dialogue.

Why do I get jumbled text when pasting a graph from Excel (mac 2011) into Illustrator cs6

The Goal: To copy a graph from Excel (mac 2011) and paste it into Illustrator cs6 as a vector graphic.
The graph's vector and layout is okay. Yet, the text / copy is jumbled text:

Do I have to change a preference in either Excel or Illustrator?

In Excel, right click and choose Format Chart Area. In the dialog at the left, choose Fonts. Change the font to Arial or something other than Calibri (Theme Body). Then copy/paste.

The illustrator drawings look fine with the pattern fills and when I bring the drawing into quark 9.1 they are still fine. When I print the quark file to lo res pdf drawing is still fine, but when I print to hi res pdf (press quality for print) the patterns disappear. I cannot figure out what the problem is.
just a note. Other textures and artistic fills work fine. It seems to be just the basic ones. I'm wondering if for some reason they may not be saved completely in my libraries?

Its just a drawing in black and white with some basic graphic texture to show “dirt” The pattern consists of a bunch of small lines. I save the file as an eps. And bring it into quark. When I print from quark I say print to pdf as press quality. I don’t think the problem has to do with acrobat because I’ve never encountered these problems before CS5. These drawings have been around for years and all of a sudden they don’t work.

How do I split a large wall graphic on Illustrator into sections for printing?

I work in marketing and occasionally have to put together graphics on Illustrator.
I am currently putting together a large wall graphic for an exhibition and want to find out how to split it into sections for printing. It has a total length of 5757mm but will need to be split into 6 panels (4x 980mm, 1x 841mm & 1x 996mm)
It would be best for me to design this as one large graphic and then split it, however I'm not sure of the best way to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is just room enough for the whole artwork in 1:1 within the Workspace.
You may create it as one entity, then create Artboards for each panel, but the exact way depends on a few things such as whether you are working with overlaps and whether the printer prints to the edge or has a non printing area.
You may need two sets of the artwork with every second artboard on each so that you end up with overlapping artboards for printing/assembly.

Problems cutting and pasting into illustrator 4 after upgrading to MAC OS 10.6.44

I've been using my copy of CS4 illustrator without a problem until I recently upgraded to a macbookpro running OS10.6.4
When I copy items, any item into illustrator it puts a large black box around where the text is.
When I open up old documents I created on illustrator I can copy and past those text items without a problem. here is an example of what Illustrator is doing to my pastes:

If you have AppleCare, you should have a simplified Tech Tool Pro CD already. It is not part of Mac OS X. Tech Tool Pro is a third party utility package that helps diagnose and repair some problems that might occur with a Mac. Just Google for "Tech Tool Pro" (including the double quotes) and you will find tons of information on it. If you don't have Tech Tool Pro, its available for purchase at any store that sells Mac software.

Can We Paste Photoshop Smart Objects Into Illustrator (as Linked/Embedded)?

Since raster editing is much more limited in Illustrator, is there a way to link or embed an individual Smart Object from Photoshop into Illustrator? I know there is an option to Place a file into Illustrator. But what if I have a larger Photoshop document with many Smart Objects in it, and just want to copy and paste one of those into Illustrator, but also have it update when I update it in Photoshop. Is this possible?

Copy and Paste won't have a link to the original file. Only Place can have that.

I have Adobe Illustrator CS5 and run OSX 10.6.8 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM and my question is this -- when I copy a jpg image from my Adobe Photoshop (Version 8.0) and bring it into Illustrator for a project and try to paste it in, it always fails and says something like "image is too large for clipboard" -- the only way around it is to go to
"image size" in Photoshop and reduce the dpi to 150 or less -- then it works. BUT I want to be able to bring in large 300 dpi images of course. Please Help! Thanks!! Will Tuttle

If you have other apps running in the background they are using part of your ram. The size of the clipboard should equal the amount of free ram available. Odds are your maxing out on ram. {But then I am guessing since I am on windows}

In illustrator CS4 I am trying to cut and paste a picture into a shape. In freehand the shortcut was so easy. I know there is one in Illustrator but cant remember what it is, can anyone tell me?

What Steve said, with the addition that you may get rid of the outlying parts, by:
1) With the mask selected, in the Transparency palette dropdown select anything but Normal,
2) Object>Flatten Transparency, no need to change options,
unless you have withheld information and really want to distort the picture to fit the shape, in which case you should select both shape and picture and Object>Envelope Distort>Make with Top Object.
The procedure 1) - 2) is destructive in case of vector artwork but makes no difference with raster images, and it makes it easier to avoid accidental/unwanted selection outside the Clipping Mask.

Anybody having trouble pasting texture into the opacity masks box in the transparency window?

Very frustrating, works sometimes, sometimes doesn't. When I cut and paste the texture into the "black box" in the transparency window it doesn't copy and appears white on my document.

this is what I should get in the newest illustrator, but this was done in CS5 - I'm familiar with this process... just don't know why it works sometimes in the newest illustrator and sometimes it doesn't, it's frustrating.

Ok, it's quite absurd that there's no other workaround for now. I always used Adobe for webdesign, but I think it's time now to go and use some different applications, like Sketch and Macaw. I'm really curious about the last one.

Trouble Pasting into Photoshop CS3

I have just switched to using Mac OS X ver. 10.54 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Macbook with 4 Gb of ram and am trying a trial version of CS3. I am having trouble pasting images copied (either command c or right clicking) from either Powerpoint or Corel Draw 11.
I can copy the images and paste them withing the respective programs but when I command tab to PS and make a new blank image (with custom dimensions) the dimensions do not correspond to the image I copied and it cannot be pasted either by shortcut or by using drop down menus (greyed out).
To make this more frustrating, I can take the offending powerpoint and/or corel draw files into windows xp (on an old dell) and freely copy and paste using adobe photoshop 7.0. However, when I installed PS 7.0 a using Parallels on my Macbook, the problem arises again.
My guess is that it has something to do with Leopard although a google search revealed that while a few people are having this problem, mostly when they try to printscreen and past into PS, the majority do not have this issue.
Any help or insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I was just using printscreen as the only example I could find of people having a similar problem, usually in Vista.
The file formats in question are either .jpeg and .tif that have been imported and in other instances dragged and dropped into either powerpoint or corel draw.
The only possible theory is that somehow the way Leopard has files on the clipboard/pasteboard and how PS sees that data. Clearing the clipboard/pasteboard in terminal did not fix the problem either.
Just curious if you have a similar set up that is working fine?

Pasting Illustrator native file from InDesign back into Illustrator

I created a logo for a client in Illustrator. The logo was placed into an InDesign file for a collateral piece. The printer made a few changes to my logo per the client's request, but did so directly in the InDesign document instead of the original Illustrator file. So, this is what I need to know:
Since the printer made the changes in the InDesign file instead of my original Illustrator document, I just want to make sure that it is fine to paste the logo back into Illustrator and use that as my logo file moving forward. I wasn't sure if that will cause any issues with the logo and if the proper way and better way would be to go back into my original Illustrator file and make those corrections myself in my native Illustrator file. I don't know if this even matters, but I just want to make sure I do this correctly. Thanks!

I think a lot depends on the nature of the logo. Use of transparency, effects and so on could really mess things up in a round trip.
If the logo was Placed in InDesign (rather than pasted in), I don't think there's much the printer can do to it directly - the changes were probably ID-specific, on top of the linked logo.
In any case, I would export the modified InDesign page to PDF, open the PDF in Illustrator and then try to use whatever I find there to modify my original logo art.
