Trouble playing a complete .mov or .mpeg file

Hello folks.
I'm having trouble playing some downloaded .mov and .mpeg files.
For example, I've downloaded a 50MB file and it only plays about the first 30 seconds of the file. However if I put the same file into VLC, I can see the whole movie (albeit slightly bumpy along the way) which may be a few minutes long.
It doesn't happen with all my files, just some specific ones (and always the same ones) Is there something embedded in the downloaded movie that let's QT only see the first bit?
I'd like to be able to view the whole file in QT 'cos I store them in iTunes for easy filing.
Thanks in advance...!

Do the MOV file containers also contain MPEG-2 video? If so, then you may simply have a "timecode break" problem. This is very common with files downloaded from the Internet. QT is very particular and unforgiving in this regard. VLC is not. Normally I would recommend using an application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to "fix timecode breaks." Unfortunately, I cannot remember if fixing the timecode break and then using the "Save As..." option changes the file in other ways. (Believe it may change the "Open with" setting which you can easily fix afterwards.) Would have liked to check on this before posting but my copy of the application will be busy for another 5 or 6 hours doing conversions.

  • Server having trouble playing back certain .mv4 or .mp4 files

    Hello folks,
I'm really stumped about why certain .mv4 or .mp4 files do not playback well off of the server for my website www.listenup.org -- a large archive of youth media video.
At first, I had a few files that weren't working because there were non-alphanumeric characters in the names. But even after renaming them on the server and in the database, they still sit on the site longer before opening.
I can't send live to the site the videos that really aren't working at all (which I have mostly solved anyway -- users tacking on the wrong extensions or having non-alphanumerics in name), but here are the real mysteries -- the ones that load for a considerable time longer than the others before displaying the download progress bar quicktime playback tool.
All of these videos do work. And by leaving one or another sitting there for about 30sec - 1 min it should appear (and they are pretty good anyhow). At the end of the downloading process, you can right click and use "Save as Source" (these are all on Creative Commons licenses of various sorts).
Here are a few problem videos:
    http://www.listenup.org/screeningroom/view.php?media=ae9e78f2d591206ab070b699478 8b8c5
    http://www.listenup.org/screeningroom/view.php?media=cbd34b179c2f3e2a758a3d840ef e7d2c
And here are several collections where everything seems to be fine, even with videos with rather hefty datarates, videos that are iPod video 640x426 or 320x240, you name it:
    http://www.listenup.org/screeningroom/cat.php?view=7c599d3bc98f45d2803c3fd5ec737 01b
    http://www.listenup.org/screeningroom/cat.php?view=d9c8ba16e3295518c7f7cc6a4b75c ca9
If there is some processing action that I could do to these to make sure that they load immediately when a visitor clicks on them I will be happy. (Even if the progress is very slow! that's a member's prerogative whether they want to compress video with a larger web visitor community in mind!) I'd rather not rerun these through iTunes or similar to "Convert to iPod" because a) I don't know what I'm doing that is making the files better, and b) it almost always seems to make the files bigger with no perceptible gain in quality. If that is what I should do, though, I can certainly do that and replace these on the server.
Thanks so much for your QT guru-ness. It is times like these that I wish I knew more about quicktime from a developers point of view!
    Thanks,

This is very helpful! How do I create .m4v or .mp4 vidoes that "Fast start"? Just changing the extension doesn't work -- and exporting takes time. I'd love another fast solution like this for opening and "Save As" -- that results in the MPEG-4 extensions that my users are expecting. (Yes, QT is a container format, and yes this .mov has the same media H.264 media streams, but we'd like folks to be able to drag these into itunes or similar and get them quickly on iPods.)
    Thanks!

  • MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files.

Since "upgrading" to Lion my MacBook Pro won't play .mov or .wmv files, all I get is a black screen and the audio.  It's so frustrating!!
I've read many other posts all along the same lines and wherever possible I've tried to follow the advice which has been given but nothing works.    I've updated all the drivers I can and I've even reinstalled Lion, nothing makes a difference.
I'm not really looking for any more advice, all I want is someone from Apple to read these posts, realise there is problem and get working on a fix or update.
I had no problems when running Snow Leopard and it would seem, looking at everyone else's problems, that the common issue is Lion.   Seriously, this is one area where Lion is a backwards step.   It should just work (like most things from Apple), but it doesn't.
Personally I believe there is a problem with Lion but from what I've found out from speaking to friends with other Apple kit, this might be a random issue only affecting some people as some have said they've had no problems while others have had the same issues as me.    One guy reinstalled Lion and it resolved the issue for him, I've not been as lucky.
As I say, I'm not really looking for more advice, simply some sort of update from Apple to fix it.   PLEASE!!!

This is a peer-to-peer user forum. Perhaps you would see more action if you and others would file a formal "Bug" report with Apple QuickTime technical people rather than repeatedly reporting a possible problematic problem which may or may not affect others on a random basis. Since you aren't seeking further advice here is what I have observed. Not being a regular WMV file user, I had to create my own sample file to test—a WMV 9 file containing WMV3 compressed video and WMA2 compressed audio. Since I normally use QT 7 as my primary media player, I also stored the WMV data in its partially decompressed form in an MOV file container to avoid pre-playback delays in "classic" player routines and also provide a secondary playback test of MOV wrapped content. These files play as follows using the Flip4Mac component/player support and uncoded URL uploads:
QT 7.6.6 "Open File" - both files play correctly.
QT 7.6.6 "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
QT X.1 "Open File" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file plays video without audio.
QT X.1 "Open Location" - WMV file appears to open but plays with "black" screen and no audio. MOV file plays video without audio.
VLC "Open File" - WMV plays correctly. MOV file doesn't open,
VLC "Open URL" - WMV file plays correctly. MOV file appears to open but nothing plays.
MPEG Streamclip "Open File" - both files play correctly.
MPEG Streamclip "Open URL" - both files play correctly.
GarageBand - WMV file will not import but MOV file does.
iTunes - WMV file will not import. MOV file container is accepted but as soon as iTuness sees the compression formats, it aborts import.
Safari - WMV file URL auto-downloads and playes in the QT X.1 Player. The MOV file URL opens and plays in Safari.
As you can see from these results the files do play but are subject to many different constrints based on old/new video technology support, independent QT subsets and/or container trapping constraints. In short, individual user results will depend on presence/absence of component support, actual compression formats, file container, application being used, and how the application is being used. Unfortunately, most users here can't or won't provide the prerequisite information or a sample file for independent examination. This makes it next to impossible to give advice in these matters or categorize the specific nature of the problem.

  • Why does the new Quicktime NOT play my old MOV files?

    Hi Folks.
I'm using the lasted updated Yosemite on a 3-year old iMac.
Back in my early iMac days (3 years ago), I imported my camcorder's AVCHD files
into iMove or Final Cut Express and converted them to Quicktime MOV files.
Turns out they were rendered by Apple or Final Cut into MOV files using the
Apple Intermediate codec.  I had no choice over this.
Until I upgraded to Yosemite, I was able to preview any of these movies
very easily in the Finder.  Simply highlight the movie, press the spacebar,
and it opens, in a real-time, real-size screen, with a simple play-pause button
in the progress bar at the bottom.  Never had a problem with any previous
    Mac OS.
Now when I click on the file in the finder, instead of a movie preview, I get a
big, silent QT "Mov" icon that just sits there looking silly.
I double click it to open it up in Quicktime, and it attempts to go through this
lengthy conversion process, taking at least as long as the movie is in minutes,
then asking me if I want to save this new "converted" version.
Fortunately, I have an old version of Quicktime 7 on my Mac, and QT 7 opens it
and plays it no problem.  No "conversion" necessary.  No cumbersome and
space-hogging needs to create a "cloned" copy, just so the new, lame version
    of Quicktime can play it.
What's up, Apple?  AIC was YOUR codec that YOUR SOFTWARE chose to
transcode into.  Now, your new Quicktime does NOT support this codec?
And your old version does?  And why might THAT be?
Really, this is so elementary.  This is not rocket science.  Just like JPG images
not displaying properly in Mac Mail now.  It begs the question "why" ...?
I mean, for the elementary preview abilities that always made Mac such a
friendly computer ... *uh* ... where is that?
And here we go, wasting hours of time, looking for fixes that should not
    have to be "fixed"...
Did I miss something?  Or did you?

Aeclay: here's a couple of ideas.  And an answer to your earlier post.
Basically two options to work with here:
Store the files as native AVCHD files... OR
    Convert the files to Quicktime
I keep two archives of my AVCHD recordings, partly for backup, and partly for Sony's ability to archive nicely in it's own native format on it's PC-friendly utility called "PMB".  (came wtih both my NEX and ALPHA cameras).   I have an old PC that I use for my complete archive; Sony's PMB utility works only on PC's and will do a good job both of archiving, providing a thumbnail database, and re-writing your choice to removable media in it's typical Sony hierarchy.
If you've only got Mac's, you can still archive your AVCHD recordings; copy them to folders named or organized to your own spec's.   AVCHD is a high-quality compression format, and they'll take up way less disk space than converted Quicktime MOV files.   You can open and play all AVCHD movies quite easily with VLC player.
The only extra trick to be aware of here is this.  The only reason you would need to preserve the intact "sony" folders (named "AVCHD" / "BMDV" etc) is is you were using Adobe Premiere as a video editor.  Somehow, it needs the hierarchical folder stuff in place to properly index the files.  Not mandatory, but helpful if  you are a Premiere user.  Otherwise, forget the weird "package" folders; just right-click (ctrl-click) on them, choose "view package contents" and MOVE the MTS files out of the Sony hierarchy for permanent storage.  Use VLC player to open and view them.
From that point on,  you have control over how you manage the files and what intermediate or end-user format you convert them to for your own use.
I'm not clear on your other question about the files that add the word "converted" on.  Of course Mac will convert to Quicktime MOV files.  Not sure what codec they're using now, likely H.264.  Anyway, don't bother converting.  It'll take up a lot of time and waste a lot of disk space.
ps. I just found this free utility on the internet.  It's called "MTS CONVERTER". I have not tried it, but it claims to be able to convert all AVCHD files to various useable formats.
Good luck!  (and happy Valentine's Day!)

  • HELP....AVCHD / MPEG files not playing correctly!

I have been trying to download video that was shot with the new Sony FS100 camera that I'm told are AVCHD or MPEG files to my older Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 timeline, but they are not playing correctly. When I reverse the field dominance, the image plays better but the sound is strange (I was able to speed the sound to 450% and it worked better, but then the balance of the sound from the clip is lost somewhere.).
Any suggestions to make these files play and work correctly? I tried converting them to AVI files but that showed up completely black on the timeline! Anything I've tried either affects the video or audio negatively!  I try either makes the image play or stutterThis was shot in regular SD format, NOT HD, so they should be able to play on  a standard timeline. Can anyone suggest anything to help please? Much appreciated!

Thanks for your reply, I ran it through Media Info. Here are the results:
    Container & general information:
    MPEG-PS: 290 Mib  4min22s
    1 Video stream: MPEG video
    1 Audio stream: AC-3
    First Video Stream:
8833 Kbps, 720*480 (4:3), at 29.970 fps, MPEG video (NTSC) (version 2) (Main@main) (Custom Matrix BVOP)
    First Audio Stream:
    256 Kpbs, 48.0 Khz, 16 bits, 2 channels, AC-3 (DVD-Video)
Please let me know where to go from here. Thanks so much!

  • Quicktime having trouble playing animated movies

I have a few movies I downloaded from DC++ that I want to play, but quicktime says it's unable to play them because it's missing software. I have the newest update of QT, and the movies I have trouble playing are only animated ones, such as corpse bride, team america, and final fantasy. Whats up?

If QuickTime can open the files then go to the Window menu and select Show Movie Info to see the Format: for information on what animation codec may have been used, then try to find a suitable QuickTime component for playback... the link below may help with that.

  • IiMovie 5 won't burn Project files, only completed movie.

    Using iMovie 5.0.2 (111)
CD/DVD drive will burn DVD movie from iDVD , no probs, but of course this is the finished movie which cannot be re-edited.
Will not copy to DVD the project as files that can be re-edited in future. So DVD burner ( HI-dt-st-DVDRAM GSA-H44N) works fine apart from this.
Selecting 'Burn project to Disc' from iMovie menu is followed by 'Saving Project File' and then 'No Disc Burning Drive Found. If you have an Apple-supported disc burner, please check your connections and try again' but iMovie knows it's there because it will burn completed movie via iDVD! Confused!
Any help to save files as project greatly appreciated, thanks.

Do you not get this dialogue box?
This feature creates a duplicate of your project onto a CD or DVD ROM. It does not create a video DVD for playing in a DVD player. Do you want to continue?
It would have to be very short iMovie project (which run at 15GB per hour) to fit on a CD or even a DVD.
Better to store the project on an external hard disk, which of course must be connected by firewire.
