Trouble Powering On

The last couple of days I've had a problem powering the phone on. I hit the home button but nothing happens. Usually it takes 3 or 4 tries before I get anywhere. Has anyone else run into this?

If it's turned off (as opposed to sleeping), no number of Home button presses will power it on. You have to press and hold the top right button to turn it on.
If it's sleeping, pressing the home or sleep button (top right) will awaken it.

  • Battery X, trouble powering up...I'm deep in the jungle, please help!

On Jan 14th I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" Retina from MicroCenter.  I am traveling deep in the jungle in a remote part of Costa Rica and I started noticing that it wasn't holding a charge (at first I assumed it had just ran out and I didn't plug in the power cable properly).  Yesterday I had to plug it in to power it up and I notice the battery has an "X" on it and says "No Batteries Available".  I did a quick search online and decided to try a SMC reset so I shutdown the laptop, held Shift+Control+Option+Power, and tried to power it up but the computer would not turn on or do anything at all.
Next morning, comptuer was hot and fans were running high speed (it was not plugged into power overnight so it must have been accessing power somehow).  Sometimes it powered up when clicking power button, sometimes nothing, sometimes the fans would start up.  When it did power up, it wouldn't get past the grey screen before shutting down again.  Then sometimes without even touching anything it would turn on again.
Been trying different keyboard startups but they don't seem to be working properly.  Tried resetting PRAM with Command+Option+P+R but got nothing... holding down Option does nothing.... The only thing that turns the computer on is Command+R, but it only works if I release the buttons quickly...if I hold them down (trying to get it into Recovery mode) nothing happens.  If I do manage to get it on, a few mins later it the window will pop up that say "are you sure you want to shut down?" but even if I click Cancle it shuts down, or just shuts down randomly.
Tried running Disk Utility and it can't complete Verifying Disk, it just instructs me to get into Recovery mode to repair disk which I haven't had any luck doing.
I have insurance through MicroCenter (same coverage as AppleCare + accidental) but I tried calling them and the Tech Support guy was useless... I have a lot of work I need to do here and would be happy enough if I could at least get it to work off of the power cable without the battery (even though that is tricky b/c we are running off of a generator so I would be limited to the hours that the generator is on) but I can't get anything done or do a proper Time Machine backup with it powering off randomly.  There's no chance of getting to a Genius Bar or anything out here so you are my only hope!  Please help me!!

So this is not the computer that the device normally syncs with, iTunes is working exactly as designed.

  • Deleted importain things on disk.. trouble powering up.. HELP?

HI i have a15 inch powerbook and my disk was getting full so i started to delte items i though where uneeded.. turns out i deleted stuff in the system folder that were importain now it just keeps trying to power up then shutss its self down and keeps trying to boot up it only gets to the apple with the loading sign below. please help!!!!!!!

First, never touch any files outside of your Home folder unless you really know what you are doing.
You need to reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Trouble powering computer up after OS X update...

I tried to update my OS X system but now I can't get my computer to boot up completely. A status bar comes on and gets about a third of the way complete and then shuts down. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I got the computer from Apple in 2012. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Did you mean to say insert Boot CD on your original post? -  If so do you have a system disc that you can boot from to see if it boots for one, then from that you can try to run a start up repair
Try removing the hard drive and checking the cable from the hard drive connection to the board, remove and reinsert both and then try.
Replace the hard drive or test it in a desktop or another laptop if possible.

  • Trouble powering ipod touch off

I am trying to turn the power off on my ipod touch but it won't allow me to.  Instead it goes to voice control.  Please help!

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Next try restoring from backup
    - The restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
You are talking about Voice Control when you can give limited voice commandts to play music, right? Not Voice Over when the iPod sppeds what you are try to do.

  • Z77A-G45 trouble - powering on/off repeatedly

This is completely infuriating me.  I can't work out what's wrong.  I'm doing a quick test before I fasten everything down to my case but it's not going well.
I have my CPU and heatsink fastened in correctly, both the 24 pin and 8 pin connectors from my PSU connected and RAM is in the right slots.  When I power on using the 6th and 8th pin of JFP1 it boots up for about 5 seconds then turns off again, then continues to do so indefinitely.  Doesn't even reach BIOS.  Also is there any kind of speaker with this mobo so I can hear POST?  As it stands I've got no clue what's going on.
Specs so far are Intel i5 3570k CPU with stock HS&fan, XFX Pro 550W and 8GB (2 strip) DDR3 RAM.  Anyone know what's wrong.  I've paperclip tested the PSU so it's not that.
Anyone know what to do to troubleshoot?

G Skill Dual Channel RAM, before purchasing I asked if it was compatible and apparently it is.  I've just removed and refitted the CPU and no problems on that front.  When I removed my second bit of RAM it now boots up.  I'll quickly attach the HDMI and see if it goes to BIOS.
im not a MSI mod though but i like to help you
so you are stating that on
you have Gskill dual channel ram ... can you be more exact maybe give a type number or something ? and at what speed does it run?
and you removed one of the 2 ram banks and now it works or ?
Just edited the last post.  I'm not really sure what the RAM is, it only says G Skill Dual channel on the box.  As it says in the edit, it's working when I have either RAM inserted in the first slot.  I think this is an error on my end rather than the hardware.

  • Netbook NB305 - Are the USB ports fully powered?

I'm wondering if the USB ports on the NB305 supply enough power to power an external 2.5" hard drive.
    Thanks very much!

It can depend on the external drive.  A friend of mine and I bought our WDC Passports at the same time from the same store and mine works just fine on every laptop we have tried it on and his exact same model (the serial numbers are only about 100 apart) has troubles powering up on some of the same laptops mine runs fine on.  If it doesn't you can normally use a dual usb cable like this one to draw power from two ports to get it going.

  • Problems Powering On

Hi, I purchased my MacBook in 2006 and it is version 10.4.11. A few days ago I started to have issues while attempting to power on this computer. I can hear it turn on but the screen stays blank and the white light blinks rapidly. I have to hold the power button down again to power it off. On the second try it blinks rapidly again and needs to be powered down. Usually on the third try it powers on properly. Does anyone have any idea why I am having trouble powering on or know what this means? I was hoping that since the computer still eventually works, that I could install some new software to help make the problem go away. Please let em know if you have any recommendations. Thanks!

  • My A1208 iMac will no longer power on

I have a iMac core 2 duo model a1208 (late 2006) that has never had any problems whatsoever until last year, it had trouble powering on. It would not respond to the power button for extended periods of time, then would miraculously turn on one day. The last time I shut it down was in November, and it has not been able to power on since. I checked the diagnostic lights, and they come on green when its plugged in. This seems to be a common issue, but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere online. Any suggestions?

The only thing to do it take it in for repair at an AASP, due to it's age I doubt an Apple Store would work on it but an AASP may. We cannot diagose because it could be anything from a main logic board, to a hard drive or even a power supply. Without the correct tools to test it, it's a total guess.

  • Using USB drive between Leopard and Snow Leopard

I have 2 USB drives that were formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on a Leopard Macbook Pro. I have had no troubles when using these drives between Leopard OS machines however when i try to copy files to them from a Snow Leopard machine an error message appears.
Secondly when i tried to copy files from the USB onto the Snow Leopard (Macbook Pro) only the folders were visible and not their content. When I "Got Info" on the USB via Snow Leopard it showed that data space was being used.
Can anyone tell me if Mac OS Extended is the standard Mac format type then why this might occur and hopefully a solution? I would like to upgrade to Snow Leopard but do not want to lose the data on my external drives formatted on Leopard.
    I appreciate the brains trust!!

Was the computer that didn't work logged on to the "owner' of the images own account, or were you using a 'guest" log-in, kicks?
If the different computers were set up in a different fashion for such things then it might explain the different behaviour.
Another thing that could prevent a Mac writing to an external drive would be if the external drive itself is formatted with the NTFS file system (common on many windows drives). Unless the mac concerned has additional software installed then it can't write to an NTFS drive. Perhaps the ones that could write have the necessary patches installed?
A final issue may be power. Was this a self powered drive or a bus powered drive? Computers that follow very closely the official USB specs often have trouble powering a "bus powered" drive effectively from a single port. In this case trying a "Y" cable, letting you connect to two USB ports on the same computer, will usually get things working. Some Macs seem better than others in this situation, and even the actual USB port used may make some difference.
    Cheers

  • Unsure PSU compability

My old MSI board has failed and I purchased a new 945P Platinum.
I had to buy new RAM and processor to go with this board.
I didn't know that this board can't fit an AGP display card, so I had to go get a new PCI-Express display card
And now, I found out that my PSU possibly not compatible with this motherboard.
    It's a Coolermaster Real Power 450 (RS-450-ACLY).
I read the manual and it seems that 945P Platinum mainboard needs 3 power connectors connected to the board to ensure stable operation.
    1. ATX 24-Pin Power Connector: ATX1 (I believe my PSU has it)
    2. ATX 12V Power Connector: JPW1 (8 Pin, I can't find an 8 pin connector on my PSU)
    3. ATX2 (4 Pin, do I use the 4 Pin molex connector that I normally use to connect my PATA hard drives to connect it to the board?)
Below questions is for point number 2 above regarding the ATX 12V Power Connector.
Can I use a convertor to convert my current 4-pin ATX 12V to the required 8-pin EPS 12V?
http://www.antron.com/accessories/pstomb.html (Look at the 4th picture)
    Thanks in advanced.

yes, you need the 6-pin PCI Express connector but usually PCI Express display card will provide the 1x4 molex pin to 6-pin convertor for you to make the card compatible with all power supplies.
2x10 ATX cable is compatible with 2x12 ATX1 onboard. Must plug to board
2x2 ATX12V cable is compatible with the JPW1 2x4 on board. Must plug to board.
ATX2, the 4-pin molex. It's for peripherals like your display card. This is optional. In case the board cannot power on, then only you plug this in.
You may not need 2x2 to 2x4 convertor unless you run into trouble powering on your board.

  • Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing

My Portege A100 has suddenly started freezing for no good reason.
It also has trouble powering on sometimes in that the blue light comes on the harddrive spins up but not a lot happens and the screen remains blank.
Other times it will get into windows and allow me to use it then all of a sudden stop responding completely.
It does this in safe mode as well ad from a cold boot.
The odd thing is that it seems to be triggered physically sometimes but I couldn't swear to this and it may just be a coincidence.
    any ideas?

    Hi
You description sounds very strange because the issue what you have described happens sometimes. Possibly its only a software malfunction???
How long does the OS runs on the notebook???
What do you think about the reinstallation by using the Recovery CD?
Such reinstallation and fresh OS could sometimes solve the frizzing issues.
But if the notebook will not power up so you should test other suggestion.
You should remove power pack and ac adaptor from the notebook. Then wait several time (10-15min). Put the power pack into the notebook and connect the AC adaptor.
    Then start the notebook.

I recently moved my MacPro to a new building. Almost immediately it started taking a long time to boot. Twice it hung on the blue screen for approximately 10 minutes before continuing to the login screen. Problems were intermittent, sometimes it would boot fine. Then it started having trouble powering on at all. It would click and the light would turn on and off in less than 5 seconds. I took it to a different building: no powering on. I took it twice to the Apple store for the same problem, it turned on both times so I had to take it back with no help. Back at the original building, the computer turns on sometimes after leaving it unplugged overnight. I suspected an issue with the power in the building so I plugged it into a UPS. Initially it was only on a Surge Protector. On one recent occasion I accidentally nudged it with my knee and it powered down and back up. On another occasion I was sitting still watching a video and it powered down and back up with no intervention.
This will not reproduce at the Apple store. Each time it is there it has booted up perfectly using both my power cord and Apple’s power cord. Don’t know what to do next.
Any thoughts on what to try before replacing power supply and power cable? Is it possible this is not a power-related issue?

make sure to use something in 1000VA or better for your UPS and that it can support your system. May seem like $200 is a lot but then they work and give you adequate shutdown or to ride out a 5 minute power issue.

you don't need to nor is it that effective to leave unplugged over night or something.
hit the power on for 10 seconds while every cord and device is unplugged though.

  • Imac running 10.7.3 won't shut down

    Hi,
I have a new imac 3.4ghz - i7 with 16gbs ram that won't shut down unless I hold in the power button. Any idea what may be causing the issue. I checked the Console logs but that did not give me any indication of what might be hanging it up. I also, have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and it has no trouble powering down.
I am running AVID Symphony which is not qualified for 10.7.4 yet so I am not going to do the update yet.
