Trouble printing a gradient in Illustrator CS3

Hi Guys,
I'm having trouble printing a gradient via color seperation on a ecrm MAKO 36 image setter...
I've uploaded a file. The top light blue border(gradient) will not print. If I take the gradient off it will seperate with no problems.
I've tried using the compatible gradient & mesh printer settings but it doesn't make any difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Curtis

I looked at the file and found strange things about it. It has two groups of object that only have one object or path in the group and in each case the object has clipping path that does absolutely nothing I would eliminate the clipping by selecting them in the layers panel and deleting using the trash can in the layers panel.
I would select all the art and in the attributes panel I would make the overprint options for both Fills and strokes set as uncheck, which is what I thin is causing the problem as there is no reason for an overprint.

  • How to create a linocut/printed surface aesthetic in Illustrator CS3?

    Hi,
I'm looking to create a linocut/printed surface look in Illustrator for a project that i'm working on. I'd love to get my hands dirty and make it for real but unfortunately the timescale i'm working to won't allow for such a luxury. Is there a way to do this?
I've included the image below to give an idea of the sort of thing i'm after.
    Cheers!

If you are trying to get a more textured feel to the linework than the normally perfect vectors that Illustrator creates, you might look at the various effects. I'd say "roughen" off the top of my head from the look of the art sample.

  • I can't print to PDF from Illustrator CS3

I have been using CS3 for a while now, but the last two jobs I have attempted to print to PDF with have failed. I get the message, "Can't Print the Illustration" and then the following error message:
    %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
    %%[Page: 1]%%
%%[ Error: invalidrestore; OffendingCommand: restore ]%%
    Stack:
    -save-
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
    Can anyone PLEASE HELP!!!

There's either an offending object or a corrupt font.
    You can try these:
    1. first make a copy of the file.
    2. Select All/Convert text to outlines and make PDF. Does that work?
    3. If not, start a new file. Copy and paste each item individually to the new file and try to make a pdf each time. You will soon work out the offending item.

  • Indesign trouble printing a gradient shadow

    Hello,
I'm fairly new to production in Indesign and I've been having a lot more trouble than I thought I would trying to get this particular graphic to print properly - I know it must be something really simple that I'm not doing.
So the attachment "testimage" is the original artwork in Illustrator - how it is supposed to look. I then put this file into Indesign and exported as a PDF and I got the attachment "tester" - everything looks fine, but no shadow. The shadow prints white. I have tried to do things like overprint, but that does not work, as well as distorts the appearance of the colors in the rest of the file. I have also tried to remake the graphic in various ways, such as use a drop shadow in Indesign instead of using the blur from Illustrator.
Perhaps could any of you please tell me what I am doing wrong? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

In Acrobat 9 on Windows XP I see a shadow in both PDF files, but it is lower resolution in tester.pdf and looks like it has been heavily jpeg compressed.

  • How to print effects/gradients in Illustrator CS5??

I created various pieces for a project in Illustrator and now I want to send the files to the client for printing. My files are currently set to RGB color mode and I have a gradient and a few effects (specifically some textures) added to the different files. I noticed that when I changed the color mode to CMYK (for printing purposes) the effects & gradients were gone and I read up that they only work in RGB. So my question is how do I keep the gradients and effects intact so that I can print them? Don't they have to be in CMYK mode to print properly? I thought of possibly flattening it or converting the objects some how. I don't know what to do I'm at a loss. Oh the client wants the files in jpg format too. If you could also tell me how to set up the file for printing would be great. I'm still new at the printing side of things.
Thanks in advance for the help.

    ashmic,
Generally, if your uses of the artwork includes printing as in a printing house, you should start in CMYK because certain RGB colours cannot be reproduced in CMYK (you may use spot colours).
If your printing is only on non PostScript printers as in most inkjets, you may be better off using RGB, because a non Postscript printer ultimately converts from RGB to CMYK, so CMYK artwork will be converted twice, first to RGB, then back to CMYK.

  • Why am I having troubles printing from both the Illustrator program and the PDF I save?

I had a large Illustrator file that was made up of AutoCAD linework of an entire university campus.  The file works fine and I can do anything I please. I made a 24" x 36" artboard and scaled an area to fit nicely.  I also deleted a lot of contours and additional linework so the file size was not so large (went from about 40 mb to 6mb).
However, when I go to "save as" and select my artboard and save as a PDF. I open the PDF, which is 2.5mb in size, and it takes about 1 minute because of all the contours going in one by one. After I let it load, I print to my plotter as I do all the time in Adobe Acrobat X and it will bring up the window that says "Flattening" and gives "1%".  After 10 minutes it reches 2%. After patiently waiting 1 hour, something popped up saying Acrobat failed to complete task and needs to close.  Tried several times and it just wont print! I am Beyond frustrated. I even try rasterizing the PDF by opening it in Ps
Something I note is how my computer is working...that is how it is handling its processes via the task manager.  Both times when I try to print from Illustrator and Acrobat it never makes it because it times out. My 8GB RAM desktop computer reaches max capacity in this process and devotes 6GB RAM specifically to Acrobat or Illustrator as it tries to print.
What is the deal here?  I have "Save As"ed PDF's from Illustrator hundreds of times and sent them to our plotter from Acrobat.  Is there something going on with my Illustrator File?  I idn't think it mattered if linework was outside of the artboard when I save PDF of an artboard.  I have a lot of layers in the .Il file, but most of them are off and it is just linework, no images or effects being done.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Agree with what Scott said. It may just look like single lines but due to how CAD programs construct the visual appearance based on drawing primitives rather than "paths" as it is understood in AI, there could be an awful lot of them in the same place even in seemingly simple drawings. I'm sure you'd see the same performance issue if you attempted to manualyl flattening the file in AI... You will have to go in there and clean it up or even better, clean it up in the CAD program and export it differently from there...

  • Print to PDF from illustrator CS3

CS3: In the Print dialog box, with Adobe PDF 8.0, I select the Printer Setup dialog box. Under the Layout pulldown menu I have PDF Options (settings) and Printer Features. Then select the print button to Save to File and name with the option to browse where you want the file.
    The Problem:
Since I installed CS4, the PDF Options is no longer available in CS3 and Save to File does not come up, can not rename and no option to direct file. The pdf file does show up on the desktop. This is happening on 2 machines. Both running Mac OS 10.4.11. One is Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel and the other a Power Mac G5 dual. I have CS2 loaded as well on each of these.
A third PowerMac G5 Dual which is using Adobe PDF 7.0 has the pdf options, renames and can direct, but the files get stopped in the Printer List (CS3). Starting Job again does not work. This happened also after installing CS4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello Zuc,
The problem is the lousy version CS4 that conflicts with the Lousy version CS3. I believe you have to uninstall Lousy version CS3 to make Lousy version CS4 work (or vise-versa).
But you are not alone, PC users have the same experience (they are using the same lousy software):
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7e6db/0
So you have to choose which version is less harmful. Is sad that Adobe is not longer reliable with new technology. Please let me know when CS4 gets an update. Thank you!

  • Printing facing thumbnails in indesign cs3

I seem to be having trouble printing thumbnails with adobe indesign CS3 version 5.0.3.
My document is 72 pages long including covers, mainly consisting of placed raster images, the document size is 173.9 mb. My aim is to print a thumbnail version of my document with facing pages portrait on a3 pages preferably 10-12 spreads per sheet. This would enable me to study my document as an overview, allow me to present it to my colleagues as a hard copy for discussion and give me the opportunity to ***** the flow of the document as a finished piece.
Thumbnail printing under the print - setup option only allows thumbnail printing as page batches of 1x2 2x2 3x3 4x4 5x5 and so on. If anyone has found an alternative solution to my thumbnail printing problem I would appreciate it if they could share it with me.
n.b. My system requirements are, mac osx version 10.5.4, dual 2 ghz power pc G5 with 6gb ram. My printers are xerox workcentre 7335 & xerox workcentre pro C2128.
Also, thanks to Bob - Adobe Writer, for patience and forum user guidance.

I have created a template using a generic pdf that has the thumbnails
arranged how I want them using a generic link called thumbs.pdf. I
replace the thumbs.pdf with a LOW res copy of the document I'm working on.
See attached and then set something up like it, but suited for your needs.

  • Snow Leopard prints pdf in other colors than the Illustrator CS3 design

2 days ago I installed Snow Leopard. Yesterday I tried to print an Adobe Illustrator CS3 document that I made into a PDF. My logo which is gradient aqua and yellow prints grey, black and red. It appears fine on the screen and prints fine as an AI document. I emailed the document to my husband as a PDF and he also just installed Snow Leopard. The email pdf shows the proper colors but it prints in the same weird grey, black, red for him as well. All our old documents from years back which have my logo print in this wrong color combo. I spoke to Apple today and I printed a random Safari photo doc ( a zedonk, zebra donkey, check her out)! saved as a PDF in the proper color combo. We installed a graphics update for Illustrator but no resolution. It appears the problem might be the pdf file sent through Snow Leopard can't read the colors. Help!

Try printing the PDF with Adobe Reader

  • LPI/DPI not changing dot size in Illustrator CS3 when printing HELP!

I'm having to us my wife's laptop which is an HP running windows vista. I am using Illustrator CS3 and printing with a Ricoh Aficio AP610N Adobe PostScript3 printer. All this I could do on my laptop before it messed up and it would work fine. Now though on my wife's laptop when I go to print a spot color with any type of halftone or gradient mesh and I change the lpi/dpi in the print dialogue box down to say like 25 or 30 from 106 the dots are still printing out very very tiny. There not printing out 25 or 30 dots per inch. There still at like 106 or 225 lpi/dpi. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! Why wont they change to what I set it to??? Am i over looking something??? Again all this worked fine on my laptop I could change the lpi/dpi to 35 and they would print out big I could actually see them. And now on my wife's laptop they just keep printing out small real fine dots. The only difference between my laptop & hers is mines was a 64bit & hers is only a 32bit. Please help me someone!!!!!!!!!!!

Look for printer settings in the printer's driver dialog that overide document halftone settings. Some HP laser printers, for example, have a so-called "resoution enhancement" setting that is on by default, and that overrides the document halftone rulings. It's quite possible you have turned such a setting off on your machine, but have not done so on your wife's.

  • Illustrator CS3 printing to pdf as grayscale only

    Hi,
I'm pulling my hair out over this one. I'm simply trying to print from Illustrator CS3 to Acrobat 8. It will print colour designs fine, as long as they contain no images. But if I try to print a design with a psd in it, or load a psd into illustrator to print, the whole thing comes out in black and white.
I've just upgraded to Windows 7 64bit but have switched to XP compatability mode for Illustrator, still no luck. I'm not sure Win7 is the issue though as I've had this problem before, in 32bit XP, but can't remember how I resolved it. All the updates are installed.
thanks for any help in advance! Kurt.

Ok the Output pane of the print dialogue pointed me in the right direction. I'd got it working for straight psds with yet another go at updating; but in additions, somehow a Pantone colour was the print output mix in addition to the other 4. I've loaded some completely different client work and it now works fine, so I just need to purge that Pantone and it should all be good.
Thanks very much for the help!

  • Trouble with Crop and Trim Marks in Illustrator CS3

    Hi,
I'm creating a print document (in Illustrator CS3, using Windows Vista) and sending to a professional printer who requires trim marks. I've created my document so that there is 0.125" trim area on all sides to bleed. Here is what I'm doing to create trim marks:
    Artboard is set at desired print size (5.5"x8.5") + 1/8" trim= 5.75"x8.75"
Object>Crop Area>Make This give me crop marks at the edge of my artboard
    then I do
Object>Crop Area>Release This allows me to change my crop marks to my desired, 0.125" size
    Then i do
Filter>Create>Crop Marks This shows me my crop marks exactly where I want them in a red retangle
then I save the file as a PDF and select the following settings:
    Press Quality
Marks and Bleeds: I select the "Trim Marks" box to print the trim marks
If I tell it to show bleeds, it only shows up on the top and bottom, not left and right, even though there is "0.125" in all fields.
(Although these have only showed up for me once, I cannot get it to show up again)
When I select "Save" and then view the file, the trim marks are there, but not were I specified them to be. They show up at the edge of the artboard.
When I change the Artboard to letter size (8.5x11), THEN the crop marks show up where they're supposed to be. Why is this happening???
    Any thoughts?? Thank you!

I can get crop marks by using the "Print" menu and printing to PDF. My question is: How do you handle bleeds when printing crop marks in the "Save" or "Print" stage? Aren't the crop marks placed at the file extents?
