Trouble reading Mac SE/30 Floppy, defective old disks or doing something wrong?

I have a 20 year old Sony 3.5" micro floppy, Double-sided, "MFD-2DD" from which I'd like to retrieve some data. I gambled $11 and bought a USB floppy drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FGCUSE/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1) but am unable to read it, it simply spins a bit but won't mount and appear on the iMac or Macbook Pro finder. I don't have a blank disk to try to write and read at this time in order to test the drive. My Mac SE/30 no longer works, is literally a bookend.
Probably defective 20 year old media but this is the same for all disks, am I missing anything else I need to do?
I don't have any critical data, just fun stuff, was going to send to a data recovery service with one of them as a test, if anyone has a suggestion for a good and affordable place for that I'd be interested also.

First, try a system reset although I can't give you any confidence. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

The pinned app tabs work like they're supposed to until I quit Firefox. Then, when I open Firefox again, the pinned app tabs aren't there. Is this just the way the Mac version of Firefox works, or am I doing something wrong?

So are you saying there is a better way or another way to do that? Or are you just telling me that's how it works? Because I know that the includeIn isn't creating the other buttons untill they are needed. I need them created when the button is created. That is my question, how do I get the other states to be created when the button is created so that I don't see the button flash black?

If there is an option to "license this software", and it takes you to a sign-in page with username and password (not a serial number) - then just go ahead and sign in.
If it insists on a serial number you need to uninstall the trial. Then try to download again.

I'm having trouble converting my RAW files to jpegs. Even though my RAW files are 90MB plus, the jpegs when converted are only around 6MB. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, A

HHi Barbara, thanks for replying to my post.
No there's nothing wrong with the Jpegs, but I want to srart uploading images for sale in Alamy, but they say they must be a minimum of 17mb un compressed. Does that mean that at 6mb compressed from 90mb they'd be acceptable?

Trouble sharing iMovie project. Up to 50+ hours left, is something wrong?

I've been trying to export this project to a DVD for weeks and I don't know what else to do. I went out and bought more ram so now my computer has 4GB and the imovie project is still taking forever. The hours keep increasing, now it says over 50, but the Activity Monitor says iMovie isn't responding. Do I shut it down or keep waiting days for it to finish? Is something wrong with it? Please help, I've been trying to finish this project for weeks and I don't know what to do. I'm trying to patient but since the AM says it isn't responding I wonder if I'm just wasting time.

I would suggest making your movie into a series of shorter movies. Try to keep them to 20 minutes or less, but you might get one slightly longer if you need it. An hour and 26 minutes is very long for iMovie. If you really need a movie that long, I would suggest Final Cut Pro X.
To make your movie shorter, go to the Project Library View and select your movie so that it is highlighted. Then click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT and give the duplicate a name, like "Wedding - Reception". Then delete everything except the reception scenes. You can repeat this process for your other short movies. Be sure to keep your original long movie intact, and only work on the duplicates. If you ever decide to get Final Cut Pro X, you can import this project and do the whole thing.

Time machine needs its own partition to operate. So you are not going install a OSx Lion on that volume.
If there is enough room you may be able to partition the drive on the fly with DiskUtility
Are you saying you clean installed Lion and you are trying to move your user Data over with TM via the migration Assistant? Please explain.

Mac Pro, Adobe CS3 and pretty pinwheels: Am I doing something wrong?

I have been a designer happily on PCs for many years but the time had come to migrate the business across to Mac.
On paper, I thought my new rig was the duck's guts. I waited patiently for CS3 (to take advantage of the Intel processor) before I bid the PC a fond farewell but I find the performance om my Mac Pro far from impressive and at least, a minimum, a million miles away from what had been promised by the salesman and advertising.
Forget about the time I spend staring at the little wrist-watch... what is up with that bloody pinwheel?
I am not running dozens of apps at the same time. Just InDesign or Photoshop in less than a minute would keep me happy. Why does it take over 30 seconds for a file to open? Am I expecting too much for a $6k machine to perform at least twice a fast as my 3 year old PC?
I am not very happy. Or is this somehow my fault? I bloody hope so...

There isn't a single diagnostic tool that can test for why your system gets a spinning wheel. Adobe has user forums like this and this is really a PS CS3 issue so you might want to look and ask at http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b362/[email protected]@ . A search on "spinning wheel" leads us to http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ee6b362/[email protected]@ where it suggests my first thought also and that would be to have a secondary hard drive available for a scratch disk. Even with 7gb of RAM PS will regularly use a scratch disk as you work, weird but true. You should have few pageouts with 7GB of RAM, but you might also check your Activity Monitor to see if you are getting many pageouts. With 4GB of RAM PSCS2 was causing a huge number of Pageouts and consequently spinning wheels for me. If you have a lot of stuff kept in RAM it's not impossible to generate pageouts enough to cause the system to need to write to disk often and cause that behaviour. If you are using PS alone it should not be an issue. A few hundred pageouts after rebooting and working for an afternoon would not be unusual. Many thousand would indicate a need for even more RAM. A second hard drive for Scratch is nearly a requirement for PSCS3. I've never even run PS with a single HD so I can't say from experience how bad it is but it's one of the first things suggested in terms of performance. Also, do check and see that all your RAM is actually being "seen" and recognized. If you have PS set in its prefs to use 100% of memory you might try backing that off to 80% to free up more memory for the system. It's quite easy for PS to use all 7GB of RAM, starving your Mac. In fact I'd back it off to 70% and if that helps, bring it up (restart) 10% at a time to play around to find the highest setting you can use that doesn't cause a spinning wheel. Some searching at the above (first) URL under the terms optimize or memory usage or beachball etc etc and some of your own posts there should turn up some information that may be more directly helpful. I had the same issue with CS2 and in my case it was a lack of RAM and a need to update to CS3. I doubt that is your issue, but your Pageouts will tell you if you need more RAM, and you definitely can use a second HD for Scratch disk usage.

I have 2 Macs, connected to the same Wifi network. But sometimes, the shared computers does not appear on the left hand menu of the toolbar for me to access shared folders between the computers. Am I doing something wrong?

I recently bought a MacBook Air for work. Whilst at home, both my Macbooks are connected to the same Wifi network. Sometimes, the 2 Macbooks are connected and I can access the shared folders, which is great. However, every now and again, the connection seems to be lost. Is there something I need to set up so that every time both Macbooks are switched on and connected to my Wifi, it will automatically be linked?

I have found with AppleTV that it is the IPV6 on the computer you want to access is the problem. The issue is that Homegroup on Win 7 or Win 8 requires IPV6 to work, but AppleTV won't work with IPV6. (So maybe double check you have IPV6 turned off)
So you have to make a choice - Homegroup or AppleTV.... but you can't have both, until Apple brings ATV up to date. (crazy that it does not recognise IPV6 - c'mon Apple!)
You can set up sharing individually in Win 7 or 8 and have the ATV access files that way.
Having said that, there is always the exception.. I have an old HP home server running Win8 and it services ATV - but is part of the Homegroup... have no idea why it works on both, but no other machine on the home network will talk to both ATV and Homegroup at the same time!

I have a new Mac Book Pro. When I try logging into face time I get an error message saying there is a server problem. Am I doing something wrong?

My new 13' retina mac book always fails about the keyboard! Is something wrong with the hardware?

I have bought the newest 13' retina mac book. But the keyboard failed 3 times the first day!! I was really upset about that. Some discussions on the website show chrome may be the problem. But after I unstall the chrome, the problem still exists. And it has failed about 6 times till now.
What should I do?

You should return it for a full refund until Apple fixes this issue. It could be a week or a month before apple has a fix.

Trouble gifting a music video. Am I doing something wrong?

I tried gifting a music video to a friend's email, but on the final screen just before the transaction is complete, I click on 'Buy Gift' and a small pop-up window appears that reads 'Your request is temporarily unable to be processed. Please try again later' I've double-checked my account information and everything is correct. In fact, I have no issues buying/ downloading songs for myself. I used to be able to mirror my Mac Book Pro screen to my LCD tv. It seems like when I updated to Lion it no longer works. Am I right, or Am I doing something wrong?

I used to be able to watch movies from my laptop on my LCD TV, and it seems to me that eversince I upgraded to the Lion operating system the mirroring does not work. I have researched previous questions and I have checked the FAQ section on the Apple website and I am told to click on the mirroring icon but the icon has dissapeared from my task bar. When I plug the adaptor from thunder to HDMI the laptop screen flickers, turns blue and then goes back to the desktop but nothing shows on the LCD. I have also tried with a Thunder to VGA adaptor and the same thing happens. Any clues?
