Trouble reading some DVDs

I purchased Gibson's Learn and Master the Guitar set.  I inserted the first DVD and nothing!  It drive spins and whirs and eventually spits out the DVD.  Well darn!  I decided to check another DVD.  Everything worked fine.  Strange!!  I continued to check all DVDs in the set and a total of three DVDs would not work.  Oh well.  I contacted the vendor and they immediately rushed a new set of DVDs.  I was so excited to get practicing and placed the first DVD in my MacBook Pro drive.  NOTHING!   Same sounds and eject.  I checked all the DVDs and the EXACT same three DVDs would not initialize or play.
Is it my drive?  How likely is it that the DVD set has the exact same defective DVDs?
Help!

Hi r,
SuperDrives are notorious for being picky about what brand of disc they eat. First, try the disc another few times; some discs will read only periodically. If no luck there, you could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • MacBook Pro not reading some DVD's.

My 18 month old, 15" MacBook Pro refuses to read some DVD's, even a new DVD out of the packet. When I insert the disc I can hear the drive whir up but it doesn't whir up as far as it does when I put a DVD in that it will read. The drive just keeps whirring up and down and if I leave it eventually I get a message saying I have inserted a blank DVD but this usually appears after a good 5 minutes. The only way I can I remove the DVD is by restarting my MacBook whilst holding down the eject button.
    Any ideas?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd

You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

  • Sattelite A30-404: DVD player doesnt read some DVD's

    Hi,
    I have a Sattelite A30-404 and recently I installed a new firmware update for my TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6112. (page can be found [here|http://nl.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_driver_details.jsp?service=NL&selCategory =2&selFamily=2&selSeries=153&selProduct=518&langua ge=33&selOS=10&selType=all&yearupload=&monthupload =&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode=allMachines&search= &action=search&macId=&country=28&selectedLanguage= 33&type=all&page=1&ID=46804&OSID=-1&driverLanguage=42]
Since then i can't read some DVD's I write, mostly DVD of 4gb+, I can, for example, perfectly read a 1,3gb DVD with 3 multisessions.
However, other computers can read the DVD's that I can't.
    Help would be appreciated.

Possibly the new firmware does not contain all informations about all DVDs.
Do you know what firmware is or what informations it contains?
The drive firmware contains single informations about the medium which can be used, which burning/read speed is supported, what medium manufacturer is compatible, etc
Possibly the new firmware contains other info as the old one and therefore the CD/DVD cannot be read correctly.
I think in such case you have to test different CDs/DVDs and try to burn with different speed.

    Hi Yolanda,
the error message is inside a popup: (French trnaslation) "Windows media Player encountered an error and will close." I have the choice beetween "CLOSE" and "HELP ON THE WEB".
Of course the "help" is totally useless....
I don't see any troublshooter related to "media player". The only troubleshooter where I can choose Media player is for the "compatibility mode", so it's not helpful. On the "audio and devices" troubleshooter I see "read
a DVD with Windows Media Player", but that's not my case.
I've already done the last step. I copy the MP3 from my second computer to the "problematic" one, and I can't read my file. But, on the second computer, i can read this MP3 so the issue is ONLY when I try to read this file with my Windows session.
(in the same computer, with the administrator session, I can read all the files).
To put it in a nutshell:
on computer A logged as CEDRIC i can not read the mp3 called SUPERSONG (it's an example lol)
on computer A logged as administrator, I can read the SUPERSONG
on computer B logged as CEDRIC (other local account but same name) I can read the SUPERSONG mp3 that is present in the music Library (that is not the same file, but it's a file with the same name, and of crouse this is the same song). (all my MP3 are copied
from computer A to computer B in case of failure on one of the computers)
on computer A logged as CEDRIC, if I do a
\\computerB\c$\...\SUPERSONG I can not read it.
I know this is complicated to explain, but if I ask to the Microsoft community that is because I don't know what to do ;) ;) ;)

  • New DVD Drive reads some DVD's not all, why?

    Hi,
I recently replaced my old dvd/cd drive in my notebook pavillion 2945se.  It seems to work well except it only reads some store bought dvd's.   It can read Star Trek: voyager, dc movies, disney,  star wars discs, and most other store bought dvds  but doesn't read marvel movies, import movies.
All of these were readable with my old drive.  All other functions such as burning dvd/cd, and even lightscribing work.  I have updated as far as everything that I can including codecs and using microsoft "fix-it" support which actually fixed some burning issues.
My theory is that the drive is more sensitive to flawed or dirtier discs, but considering these were readable before.  Is there a fix for this?
I'm hoping that there is a fix for this since there are not many options for my laptop drive.  Currently it is:
tsst corp cd/dvdw ts-l632m ata device
    Thanks for your help.

Firmware update of DVD drive may solve your problem. But the main problem is to find the correct one. I found this by google.
However, I'm not recommend it, since I dont have real experience updating ts-l632m. I updated my DVD drive of dell notebook a while ago but using the recommended firmware from dell site.
    Pavilion DV2922TX, XP-SP3 32bit, Intel T5750 2.0Ghz, Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS with 128MB, 4GB 667 DDR2, 250GB HDD

  • DVD Drive only reads some DVDs

I can watch most of my DVDs perfectly. However, some DVDs that I put in will spin around awhile before a message pops up saying I inserted a blank DVD and then it will eject. The DVDs are all purchased/rented. There are no problems on other DVD players. There aren't marks on the DVDs. Also, let's say I rent Transformers on DVD and my DVD player won't read it. If I rent a different disc of Transformers, usually it still won't play it.
Do I need to get something repaired/replaced or can I fix it?

I am also having this problem. My DVDs (all of which are legitimate, bought new etc.) have always worked. I bought one recently from Amazon though and my MacBook Pro keeps reading it as blank. Just to verify it was my computer and not the disk, I took it over to my neighbor's apartment. She tested it in a standard DVD player and her MacBook Pro......it works just like it should. ***? We have the same computer but it won't play on mine?!?!

  • Only reading some DVDs?

We have an old g4 imac that is reading/playing some DVD's but not others. Any idea why?
    Thanks!

A lttle slow with my comeback but reading through this may help solve your issue.
There could be several different issues that cause this problem.
Many of the softwares for CD and DVD burning have different functions and many don't have those functions at all.
Software for burning should have these features.
You have the option to create
    DATA
    AUDIO
    VIDEO-TS
Besides this the software should also give the option to create your project for
    PC ONLY
    MAC ONLY
    PC OR MAC Compatible
    Most good softwares will
    Read the project
    Compress (If need be)
    Write the project
    And last but not least
    VERIFY
Verify closses or finalizes the project.
If the project was burned on PC only that could be the problem,
If the project was burned on entry level software without these options, the settings could have been set wrong.
If the project was not Verfied that could also be the problem.
Lastly if the project was burned on media that your computer is not capable of reading.
I suggest you get a friend with a PC to try it out, and if he or she can play it on a PC then have them reburn the project with good Media, and Good Software.

  • SD-2212 Drive doesnt read some DVDs - Satellite 1410

    Hello every1,
I have Satellite 1410-604 for more than 2 years, with forementioned combo drive...
It serves me well, except that it doesnt read some of the types of dvd-medias, and I use only high quality Verbatim dvds...
It only happens in last few months. It is not my primary computer but it is at use in my home, and it really bugs me that when my sister or father takes the new Sattelite Pro A60 on the road(its battery is better) I cant use latest discs on this one. So if there is some firmware upgrade, cause i cant find it on this site...
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi
I dont think that the firmware update will solve this issue because this driver has recognized this DVDs a few times ago.
Furthermore I dont found any firmware for this drive on the Toshiba website.
But check if the drive removing procedure will solve this problem. So for this please go to device manger and remove the drive. After new booting the OS should recognize the drive again
    Bye

  • Satellite M40-145: CD/DVD drive won't read some DVDs

    Hello!
I own a Satellite M40-145 purchased just over one year ago; the DVD driver worked perfectly until three days ago, but today I discovered something... peculiar. It still reads commercial DVDs and burned DVD+R, but apparently it doesn't read burned DVD-Rs anymore. I have tried with different DVD-Rs I burned through the same DVD player, with no success; trying to access the DVD yields a "insert disk in D: drive" message.
In this case, I'm talking about movies on DVDs. Please tell me there's a way to solve this without sending the computer to customer service...
I'd hate to think it broke down just days after the expiration date of the warranty.

    Hi
Well, you can try to remove the drive form the device manger.
After new reboot the drive should be recognized again. Check then if its possible to read the DVD-R CD.
But the issue sounds as a lens calibration error. If you use different media the lens must be calibrated again. But if this procedure fails, the drive is not able to read or write the DVD for example.
Unfortunately, in such cases only the drive replacement will solve this issue.

  • SONY DVD-RW DW-U10A not reading SOME DVDs, reads ALL CDs and other DVDs

I have a SONY DVD-RW DW-U10A. It reads and writes all CDs, and reads commercial DVDs, like movies. HOWEVER, I am trying to install a new application (Halion Symphony Orchestra) and it won't read the Install DVD, nor will it read an old Data DVD it used to read ALL the time.... is there new firmware after the 2005 update they did? I REALLY don't want to have to replace. I seriously doubt it needs cleaning since the DVDs/CDs it reads are so specific, and I don't really think it needs replacement for the same reason. What's going on?

Is your problem with a Mac Pro, or a MacBook? Your profile says Mac Pro, yet you posted to the MacBook forum.

  • Optical Drive reads some DVD's, but also ejects some - help

I just had a DVD made from an old video tape, put it in my MBP superdrive, it played just fine. I left it in the drive and the next morning when I woke up the computer, the DVD spun and then ejected. Since then it won't load at all. I've tried other DVD's, some work, some don't. The DVD plays just fine in my old iBook. In Disk Utility, I did the repair permissions, that didn't work. I have restarted, shut down and even reset the SMC, the DVD still won't play. My drive info: Model:HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N, Revision: AP09. This sort of thing has happened before with this drive. Any suggestions?

I've had similar problems with my original MBP early 2006's DVD drive, but a good squirt of compressed air in the slot seems to consistently fix the problem. A lot of dust here in AZ where I live
    Hope that's all it is...-Karen-

When I finally get Toshiba's software stopped, I go to Micrsoft Media player and go to the DVD drive vand start the DVD and everything plays perfect. How can I set this thing up so that Media player is the default autostart when I plug in the DVD's

Go to control panel. Switch to classic view on the left. go to autoplay. choose windows media player on DVD movies.

  • My DVD drive reads some DVD's but not all.  Help

I am trying to install all of my graphics programs (Adobe, Quark, Suitcase). It will only read one of my dvd's and not any of the others. The disks show up when I put them in my drive on my other mac. What is going on?
    Thanks.

    Welcome ot Apple Discussions!
Since a Powermac G5 can't run 10.6, we are kind of mystified what your computer consists of. But I will say this much. If these are commercial DVDs, chances are the drive has gotten dirty, and needs a proper head cleaning. Ask a local authorized service technician to recommend one for you.
