Trouble recognizing the CDRW/DVD drive

ok so i just picked up an MSI K8T Neo2 mobo for my 3500+ (939 socket) and for some reason it refuses to recognize any IDE CD drive i put in there. Aside from errors regarding it not having something to boot from (the boot menu wouldn't let me pick the drive) it also spits out this error: Sec Master Drive - ATAPI Incompatible. I know the drive is ATAPI compatibable, it's a brand new Lite-on SOHC-5232K (52x32x52x16x) CDRW/DVD drive. I connected it to the second IDE plug and set the drive to master, and I know the drive is getting power because when the IDE cable isn't plugged in it will open and close when i hit the button. Any idea what's wrong or suggestions on how i could fix this?

I've tried setting the bios to regognize it as CD/DVD and to auto, i've tried different cables, different drives, and still no luck. Also, the CD drive is the only one hooked up to the cable, and it's at the end. I tried putting it at the middle, and again, no luck. I've also fiddled with the jumper settings on the drive, and none of them seem to work. I thought of calling geeksquad but thought that maybe i could find some help with you guys before calling them. I've put together numerous systems before, altough this is my first RAID 0 system... but this has never happenned to me.
thanks for takin the time to help me out tiresmoke.

  • System recovery on Sattelite M70-204 PSM71E. The CD/DVD drive does not work

    Hello!
Can you please give me some help and advice on the way to resolve the following issues:
I have had over the last three months minor problems with Windows Installer: software updates could not always be performed successfully, an error message was issued by Windows Installer regarding Quick Time when I started the computer. Apart from it, the computer was runing correctly. I had plan to restore the system with the Toshiba CD in the coming weeks to correct the issues.
But since yesterday, I have had a new problem. The CD drive is not recognized anymore under Windows XP.
I have tried to repair the driver from the CD drive following the procedure described by Toshiba. It did not work. I do not know if it is an hardware or a software problem which prevent me to recognize and use the CD and DVD drive under Windows XP and I do not know either if I can still run anymore a Restore process.
_*1/If I launch a Restore process, I believe that, at the start ,the HD will be formatted. How can I be sure that my computer will be able to read the data from the Toshiba Restore CD?*_ ( I have today a computer which still works almost properly. I would not like to be stuck with a completely dead computer, if the Restore process fails due to the CD driver)
_*2/ Is it possible to restore without using the internal CD drive? (use of an external CD drive or external HD)*_
Thank you in advance for your help and advice!

    Hi Chris,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.

  • How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

    Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

    Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
    Cheers mate

  • Broken CDRW/DVD drive

    Hey,
I've got an IBook G4 1.33GHz with a CDRW/DVD drive. Today when I was watching a film it refused to play half way through. Now it doesn't eject properly - takes ages with lots of bad noises :/
It's only 3 months old! How do I go about getting it fixed under warranty?
And has anyone else had a similar experience? It just sounds like it's mincing up my cd/dvds!

Interesting...I had a similar issue last night (interrupting Dr. Strangelove). The DVD just sort of froze, and DVD Player froze with it. I had to force quit DVD Player and the disc wouldn't eject normally. Eventually, Finder locked up. Upon relaunching Finder and essentially holding the eject button, the DVD came out. Popped it back in and it worked fine. Today, my iBook isn't even detecting the disc drive.
UPDATE: Rebooted the iBook and it's working again..odd. Good luck with yours.

  • Firmware for GCC 4240N CDRW/DVD Drive

I tried both the CD image version and the diskette version of the firmware update and neither will update my drive to version 0214.
The update facility recognizes my drive as HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD Drive GCC-4240 Firmware Version 0111, but tells me that no update is necessary.
    Anyone else experience this problem?

You're not limited to the exact optical drive that came in it.
I do not know whether there are incompatibilities with some drives, but I do know that some facilities were upgrading them with drives that would also burn DVDs (not recommended by me, due to the limitations of the slower G3 processors).
For one that is sure to work, check these links:

For one that's cheaper, you could try Googling the model numbers listed on that second link.

  • Satellite M30x + Win7 : DVD's not detected by the CD/DVD drive

    Hi,
    I'm using a M30x since 2004 with its CD/DVD drive Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-831 S.
When I was using Windows XP, I never had problems to read or write on CD, CD-R, DVD, DVD-R or DVD-RW. But recently i have installed windows seven, and since this day the drive doesn't want to recognize DVD's. I still can read and burn CD's and CD-R's. I'm trying to burn the same blank DVD-+/R/RW as before but the drive don't want to detect them. The ones I already have burn aren't detected either.
My computer say that the CD/DVD drive work correctly and that the drivers are updated.
I have tried to clean the lens but nothing have changed. And I wanted to reinstall the drivers but I couldn't found them for windows seven.
    Thanks for the help.

At first I must say that this old notebook is definitely not designed and not supported for Win7 so if Win7 works well you are really lucky guy. Win7 s not supported and drivers dont exist so dont spent your time searching them on the net.
I dont know if described issue has anything to do with Win7 or not but fact is that lens position for CD medias and DVD medias is different and, generally speaking, when there is problem with reading one of these medias it can be problem with lens calibration what means optical disc drive is defective.
You can test it one more time if you install WXP recovery image and check if this will work again.
Other way I don't think there is anything you can do about it.
BTW: which burning application do you use?

  • Problems with the CD/DVD drive on my presario CQ50-108NR

    Hey there.
I picked up the above listed laptop a short time ago, and I have discovered a problem that I can't seem to solve.
The CD/DVD drive reads and plays movies well enough, but it will not read CD's; any CD, be it data, music, images, whathaveyou. When I try to access the CD it keeps telling me that I need to insert a disk into the drive.
Again, it plays DVD movies well enough, not a hitch there. It just won't read CD's.
I'd love to assume that it's a driver issue (which would be the simplest and cheapest to fix), but I hate assuming anything where computers are concerned.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

    Is this a used Notebook?
Use device manager to uninstall the DVD drive, open DM, expand the DVD drive, then right clcik on the dvd drive and select "uninstall" Keep DM open, now right click on any device and select "scan for hardware changes" Windows will reinstall a clean copy of the driver. Reboot the notebook
If this does not fix it, the drive is bad.

    Hi again Hal
Link to your other thread > The slot loading CD/DVD drive in my...: Apple Support Communities
You have also tried resetting the PRAM as I suggestion in your other thread...?
See resetting the PRAM > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • Do macs use the worst dvd drives???

this is just a question because i have noticed that a lot of DVDs that i burn on my mac play in my home DVD player, through my lacie external DVD drive and/or my friends PC work perfectly but they wont play in my iMac G5 or my MacBook Pro DVD player.
PS. the DVDs that i use are verbatim 99% of the time. and a lot of the problems are with dual layer DVDs.
PSS. please dont confuse my question with "macs DO use the worst DVD drives" as a statement. i do not mean it that way at all. thank you.

  • In Trouble with the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.5.0

    Hi !
Without any problems i'm using the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.3.0 to access to the
Oracle database (Oracle Database 10g Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production).
But exchanging the JDBC Driver 10.1.0.3.0 to 10.1.0.5.0 brings up the following problem:
    the statement
         con.prepareStatement(sql, resultSetType, resultSetConcurrency, resultSetHoldability)
         (with parameters resultSetType = 1003, resultSetConcurrency = 1007, resultSetHoldability= 1)
    returns null !
while using the Oracle JDBC Driver version - 10.1.0.3.0 the statement (with same parameters)
    returns a correct PreparedStatement.
Every hint or idea is welcome.
    Best regards,

    Claus,
Pardon me if I am stating the obvious, but why don't you use the 10.2 JDBC driver with your 10.2 database? The driver is part of the database distribution. Otherwise, you can download the driver from the OTN Web site.
    Good Luck,
    Avi.

  • Cleaning the cd/dvd drives dust guard

The fabric/foam/plastic (whatever they are) flaps that protect the slot of the cd/dvd drive on my macbook pro 2012 have become stiff and will not let discs through with ease. I had a liquid (tea) spill the other day, so I have reason to believe that this is a result of that incident. If I clean it with warm water and a q-tip its fine for a time, but eventually reverts to being stiff again. Any tips for cleaning it? would rubbing alcohol work? any help would be appreciated. thanks!

    Hi sarah.p,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that the SuperDrive on your MacBook Pro is no longer accepting discs. Based on the detailed information you have provided, along with the information in the following article, it sounds like your MacBook may need to be serviced:
