Trouble restarting after firmware update

I bought my 15 in MacBook Pro running OS X Lion 10.7.2 on Oct 6th so it's pretty much still brand new. Prior to this, I had owned a white 2006 MacBook and a 2009 MacBook Pro in addition to working on an iMac at work.
Earlier today I installed 2 firmware updates on the new MacBook Pro and when it restarted it did something I've never seen before on any of the other Macs I've worked on. When it rebooted it let out a low, long beep. Then  I heard the whir noise that signals the MacBook is starting up. I could see the indicator light come on briefly then turn back off and the entire time the screen was black. A few seconds later I heard the whir again and it repeated the cycle. It did this probably 5-6 times before it finally came up with a loading screen. It wasn't the typical startup loading screen and after a few seconds it rebooted itself one last time. When it booted up to the login page, the keyboard and track pad did not appear to be working. I may have been impatient in this but after 5-10 seconds of it being unresponseive, I pressed the power button and restarted the machine manually. Up until this point however, I had not touched the machine at all and was letting it do its thing. When it got to the login screen at first the keyboard and trackpad did not appear to work but after a second or 2 I was able to log in (hence why I say I may have been impatient).
My question is, has anyone ever experienced something like this before? I've never had a Mac unable to boot up and have to try it 6 times. I'm scared to perform any system updates at this point because I use this machine at work and for a few seconds I thought I would be the proud owner of a $2500 paper weight.

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care and let them deal with it or post in the Lion forum area.
Doesn't matter if anyone else had or has this issue.  The important thing is that it happened to you!

  • Unable to restart after software update 10.3.1.1779

I am unable to get  my Z10 to restart after this update.
I have searched endless avenues and have now resorted to deleteing the notifcations for this update when they come in, I have downloaded and installed it, but when asked to restart, my phone stalls on the loading screen forever, the longest I have waited for it to restart is 3 days, with 24 hours of that on 99%.
I am now the but of all phone related jokes as everyone I know has an IPHONE that works perfectly, but I insist on keeping this awful Z10 becuse I dont want to join their rank....too tink I spent £500 on this when it came out (more fool me)
It would seem that the general consensus is, I will have to go to the inconveience of taking my Z10 in to a phone shop, were they will send it off to BB for the update to be installed.
PS; Blacberry's forum is as hard to navigate as the phone is to actually get working proberly.

This has been the worst software update I have ever encountered. My Q10 is completely unreliable and I am going to switch to another device in the morning. I have restored factory settings and have successfully wiped the app to sync my shared Google Calendars, the z and y keys have swapped on my keypad and the Q10 still turns itself off arbitrarily, wipes all text and phone messages and can't recall what network I'm on or what my home wifi settings are.

  • I was updating my ipod touch to iso 6.1 ans when it restarted after the update it froze and i held the lock button and home button down to restart it and it goes to random colour screens

I was updating my ipod touch  to iso 6.1 (i think) and when my ipod restarted after the update it froze on the loading bar so i held the lock and home buttons down to restart my ipod it showed the apple logo for a few seconds then the screen went random colours.  I tried to let the battery drain  then plug it into the computer but it doesen't recognize it when i connect it.
    Please help!!!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I bought my MAC mini in 2011 and I successfully updated to Mavericks with no problems.  I am not sure why my MAC Mini will not restart after I updated to Yosemite. The completion bar gets stuck around 30%.
    Any help or ideas appreciated

Okay, this is strange.  I tried restarting three times yesterday with the same results. In fact I left it go overnight only to find the next morning that the bar was still stuck at 30%.  I did a hard boot a little bit ago and waited a few seconds. I restarted an it booted up fine.

  • Restoring after firmware update - Ways :)

    Hi All,
Nowadays we are receiving quite a few complaints that customers are unable to restore the application after updating their firmware.  I would like all to discuss to come up with some ways to restore their applications after firmware update.
    Before updating firmware
Customer can backup his phone using Nokia PC Suite's Content Copier application.
He can store his Contacts and Messages using Nokia Communication Centre as .csv file or .txt file.
For his Contacts he can sync with pc suite supported sync applications.
Messages he can store in Memory card and he can make a backup of memory card in PC.
If he is using Nokia PC Suite for his Multimedia items he can use Image Store if he is using Nokia PC Suite or Nokia Photos if he is using Nokia OVI Suite.
For Music he can use Nokia Music Manager or Nokia Music.
Once after updating his firmware, if he is unable to restore he can get those from above said applications.
If his calendar entries are not restored(as in case of some of Nokia e 71s and Nokia N 95/95 8 GBs), for God's sake if he has got one more similar device(or device having switch application on phone), he can restore the backup file to another phone having switch application, then he can transfer his data (Contacts, Calenders etc ) to his original phone
Dear Forum members, if you have got any other work around please let me know regarding the same, which will help our customers

    Hi,
If you have issue in Nokia PC Suites, [subject to your phone's compatibility with Nokia OVI Suite 2.0.0.10 ],
you can install Nokia OVI Suite 2.0.0.10 and check if you can take backup and restore it later.
Also i would suggest to use USB for taking backup, since it will be faster than Bluetooth.  Also you can select one category at one time(say backup contacts alone, then Calendar, then messages etc and so on ....)
Its better to skip memory card backup while backup-ing other Phone data for faster backup.  Memory card backup can be done separtely(since it wont be affetcted while updating firmware, users can safely remove memory card while updating firmware)
Nowadays though recent phones has got UDP(User Data Prevention i.e., even if you update your phone's firmware, your data wont get erased ), still it is recommended to backup your phone data.
    Hope this could help
I welcome our experts to add more details related to this topic.

  • Problems after firmware update 52.0.007

    Hi,
I got my phone back after the shop fixed a problem and updated the firmware to the latest version 52.0.007.
But now I have following problems:
I can't get the calendar anymore to show up on the homescreen, even after checking the checkbox to do so
    The Radio app. is gone
Does anyone has a solution for this?
    Iwan

It may sound crazy but sometimes you need to "hard reset" device after firmware update (beware all data erased) by keying in *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself). Sometimes UDP = User Data Prersevation feature of 5800XM can carry over corrupt entries when updating.

  • Is it still recommended to do a restart after and update?

Hello.  Just did an Apple update to my iMac.  Is it recommended to to a restart after the update has downloaded?  By the sounds of the prompt afterwards "The update was done successfully" or something like that, sounds like it is not.  Thanks for any input on this.  Cheers.

Some updates require a restart while others allow you to continue to use the computer while the update is in progress.  The "Update" window will tell you whether or not you have to restart and it will restart when the update is completed.  Just follow the instructions.

    Run Disk Utility   /Applications/Utilities
First, go to your Apple menu then click Software Update...
If no updates are available, check the startup disk using Disk Utility.

  • Loud beep after restart after Safari update

hi all everything is fine. But there was a loud beep when MCP had to restart after Safari update today. Should i be concerned? Like said everything is working fine. And this was the first time i heard such a beep. Its always been the regular chime instead.

Roger: That article applies only to iMacs.
True but I'm willing to bet the same (at least for the tone heard) applies to the MBP too. Let me see if I can find an advice letter that states that. In the link I suggested earlier there is a link that leads to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1557
That advice letter does refer to MBP's so it's feasible the same advice is true for MBP's. At least that's my logic.

  • Ovi Maps 3 don´t start after firmware update (6220...

    Hello!
a few days ago I installed ovi maps 3 on my nokia 6220c and it works well. Later I updated the firmware from version 03.06 to 05.15.
After firmware update ovi maps don´t start-> "Cannot open application. Install latest version from nokia.com/maps."
But Nokia Map Updater says, there are no updates for my maps.
    What´s wrong?
Can I reinstall Ovi Maps 3? Or is it possible to install Ovi Maps 3 new?
    thanks

    Hello!
The Map Updater said: "there is no update for your phone" ...because maps 3 is already installed.
But in the meantime I have found a solution!!
I downloaded maps 2.0 from the German nokia page and installed it. Later I started Map Updater and could update to Maps 3 and now it works!!!
I think the problem was: I first updated to Maps 3 and later updated the firmware. There was any older version of fixes included in the firmware update, so Maps 3 was damaged...
     thanks
    sorry for my bad English

  • Problem restarting after software update

Computer is fine, drive 40% full, no speed problems...
But it just won't restart after software update runs, nor will it restart or shut down from finder.
Problem solving so far: Safe boot, reset pram, ran disk utility, ran disk repair using install disk, ran fsck -y, ran disk warrior.
Is annoying. ANy ideas anyone? If not, what is the procedure for updating using sudate and terminal, as when I use software update, a force shut down will not install.
    ANy ideas folks?

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Trouble after firmware update (iMac Intel)

After I have updated my intelbased iMac I experience some problems I'm unable to resolve:
    1) After each startup the firmware updater starts and tells me that the firmware successfully has been updated.
    2) I'm unable to perfom the disc check in the HD-utility, this application stops examining the disk telling me a) that this program couldn't be performed due to a software error. At the same time the status shows that b) the disk has issues and needs to be repaired which isn't possible due to a).
Obviously I'm anuable to run the same firmware update once again, the program tells me that this update isn't needed. I tried to reset SMC (power off, disconnect everything, wait 15s, turn on again) and PRAM, no effect. I cleaned all caches using Onyx.
    Any clues?
    I appreciate all help.

Use the original Install disk that came with your iMac. Start up holding down the "C" key. Ignore the installation window and instead go to the menu at the top. Click on utilities and try repairing your hard drive with the disk utility program. . You can also in the same menu look at system profiler and verify what firmware version you have. It should say Boot ROM Version:IM41.0055.B03. If it doesn't you need to reinstall the firmware update. Also you can restart your iMac with the same disk holding down the "D" key for a built in hardware test. Make sure you remove all external devices besides your Apple branded keyboard and mouse or this test won't run. One more thing if I remember properly when you run the firmware update the update automatically shuts the Mac down. The instructions say after that to hold the power button down when are starting it up until the power light on the front flashes several times and the you can release it. Hope this helps
